Quinton de Kock in SA Composite squad

  shares 16

South Africa's limited-overs wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock has been named in the South Africa Composite XI to play the Test squad in a three-day practice match. The fixture, scheduled after Zimbabwe turned down an offer to play a one-off Test at the Wanderers this week because of their player strike, will be used as a warm-up for Graeme Smith's men ahead of their three Test series against Australia.

De Kock was the most eye-catching name in the list of players that will compete with and against South Africa's Test players. Left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks and offspinner Simon Harmer, who are training with the Test squad ahead of the first match, are also involved in the match.

Graeme Smith said South Africa will probably not play their likely Test XI in one team against the reserves and the seven additional players below, and the teams will be more of a mix and match. The major selection discussion ahead of the series against Australia is which of Ryan McLaren or Wayne Parnell fills the allrounder's spot and the two allrounders could be pitted against each other in this match.

South Africa remain hopeful of getting on the park, despite days of rain which forced the cancellation of Australia's tour match in Potchefstroom. The Wanderers pitch is in good condition and ready for the game but the outfield remains a concern. Barring no more rain, it should be dry in time for the start but should overnight showers make an appearance, there is a strong chance play will be called off.

Additional players: Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Simon Harmer, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Rilee Rossouw, Stiaan van Zyl

Hi Quinton de Kock should play in the test matches against Australia he's a very good batsmen and young talent for South Africa. Good wicket keeper also and the future for South Africa why wait when he's in form. Give him a chance at Test Cricket. He's earned it and can only strengthen the batting. Give AB a rest at wicket-keeping which he needs so he can focus on his batting.

This is a very strong 'composite team' and is quite exciting for saffa supporters. Duminy, petersen etc are done for. Morkel needs a wake up call too. Time to see Hendricks (x2), de Kock, van Zyl/Rossouw getting test spots .. not necessarily all at once though. Elgar and du Plessis are also questionable ... I'm not sure how Faf could be considered #4 with a first class average of only 40 ... there should be no place in top six for test ave <47

I think you those that believe Kleinveldt shouldnt be there probably raised their eyebrows when Vern was selected a few years ago and look now. Kleinveldt has been a leading wicket taker in Supersport Series for years. Give him his chance... he deserves in on merit. Just because he is a player of colour doesnt mean he didnt get there on merit.

De kock played m.irfan pretty well,he would probaly take the attack to johnson.

Eish... I would love to see Quinton De Kock vs Mitchell Johnson. Hopefully they meet in the one dayers or T20.

Great to see Rilee Rossouw there. Thought he would have had a call up to the Proteas ODI and T20 squads by now. Hope this game goes ahead and De Kock, Rossouw and Van Zyl shows Duminy and Elgar how it is done.

There is one thing that all the SA supporters agree on: the selectors are heeltemaal vol kak! They could not get it together to have a pub crawl in a brewery. I would really like to see a full on, proper, Proteas against The Best of the Rest match. I reckon the Rest will give them a damn good run for their money.

JP would score his usual 10 or so runs, Robbie would get carted all over the park, Parnell/McLaren would score nothing and take no wickets, and lord help the Proteas if Rory is bowling or Thami keeping.

Man, I'd fly all the way from the USA just to see that match!

About 3 of the composite players are better than the starting 11 players.

Guys don't worry about Kleinveldt, he is a very good net bowler. I heard the only pick him in the squad because of the confidence SA batsmen get from playing him.

If the original test squad had been selected on merit, de Kock, van Zyl and Abbott would have been selected. Tsolekile and Kleinveldt's selection are not based on the quality as players.

South Africa won't play their Test XI for fear of it being embarrassed by the composites. That's what happens when criteria other than merit come into the equation.

  • Biohazard7279 on February 3, 2014, 18:55 GMT

On paper, the composite squad isn't far behind the Test Squad at all! Let's be honest, Tsolekile and Kleinveldt shouldn't even be in the composite squad, nevermind the test squad

  • creebo777 on February 3, 2014, 18:46 GMT

I think they should play stiaan van zyl as opener, thats a strong squad, simon harmeer better impress we need a spinner asap, hope bevuma and zondo plays for the proteas one day but on merit, great talent
