  • It was the 217th ODI for South Africa and 337th for Sri Lanka.
  • It was the 20th ODI between the two sides. The record now reads: South Africa 10, Sri Lanka 9, abandoned one.
  • It was the 15th ODI between these two sides in South Africa. The record now reads: South Africa 7, Sri Lanka 7, abandoned one
  • Umpires Rudi Koertzen and Wiliam Diedricks officiated in their 67th and 29th match respectively.
  • Kumara Sangakkara's innings (84) is the second highest by a keeper for Sri Lanka against South Africa in all matches-home or away. Interestingly the previous highest was also Sangakkara's 85 at Galle on 06-07-2000.
  • Sangakkara's innings is also the second highest by a keeper against South Africa in South Africa after New Zealander Adam Parore's 108 at Centurion on 11-12-1994. Interestingly none other keeper has managed to go beyond 60.
  • The sixth wicket stand of 47 runs between Kumara Sangakkara and Tillekeratne Dilshan is Sri Lanka's best for this wicket against South Africa in all matches. This obliterates the previous record stand of 37 between Russel Arnold and Chaminda Vaas at Colombo RP on 14-07-2000.
  • Shaun Pollock became only the second bowler to capture a four wicket haul against Sri Lanka while captaining his side. Pakistan's Wasim Akram is the only other to do so. Akram, infact, has done so on three separate occasions.
  • Pollock has now taken 20 wickets in 10 matches against Sri Lanka which makes him the most successful South African against Sri Lanka. Pollock surpassed Allan Donald's tally of 17 wickets from 10 matches.
  • The seventh wicket unbroken stand of 80 runs between Jonty Rhodes and Lance Klusener is South Africa's best for this wicket against Sri Lanka. This obliterates the previous record stand of 54 between this same pair at Colombo RP on 14-07-2000.
  • Klusener has now aggregated 652 runs in 28 matches at number 8 which takes him ahead of Sri Lanka's Kumara Dharmasena's tally of 619 runs (from 56 matches). Now only Pakistan's Wasim Akram has scored more runs in ODIs at number 8 than Klusener-1060 in 104 matches.
  • Gary Kirsten has now scored 1037 runs (ave.38.40) in 32 day-night ODI matches while batting second. He became the second South African after Hansie Cronje and only the ninth batsman in ODI history to do so. The record is in the name of India's Sachin Tendulkar who has aggregated 2058 runs in 45 day-night matches so far. The details:

  • The defeat was Sri Lanka's first in six matches and its only fourth defeat in 20 matches it has played in the year 2000.
  • Jonty Rhodes won the Man of the Match award for the tenth time in his career. He became the fifth South African after Hansie Cronje (18), Lance Klusener (18), Jacques Kallis (15) and Gary Kirsten (13) to do so.
  • The last time Rhodes had won the award was way back in 1996 - v Australia at Cape Town on 02-04-1997. Rhodes was playing his 106th match then.
