South Africa v India, 5th ODI, Centurion January 23, 2011

South Africa take series despite Yusuf blitz

South Africa 250 for 9 (Amla 116*, van Wyk 56, Munaf 3-50) beat India 234 (Yusuf 105, Morkel 4-52) by 33 runs by the D/L method
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Yusuf Pathan launched the sort of assault that has made him a rich man to ensure it wasn't all one-way traffic in Centurion but it wasn't enough to prevent South Africa from snatching the series with a 33-run victory. After a tough tour over the past month-and-a-half, the last day of the series seemed set to be an anti-climactic non-scrap courtesy yet another Hashim Amla century and a slew of reckless strokes from the Indians.

Yusuf, though, blasted a century of utter violence when all looked lost at 119 for 8, and after an hour of Yusuf, the South African bowling was looking clueless and India were 49 short, dreaming of a miraculous win. Yusuf clubbed a 68-ball century but holed out soon after, much to the relief of the Sunday crowd at Supersport Park.

The tour had begun with South Africa's crushing Test victory in Centurion and ends with another defeat for the visitors at the same venue. One reason India's bowlers will be thrilled to be heading back home will be that there will be less sparring with Amla, who has plundered more than 1100 runs in the past 11 months against India in Tests and one-dayers. He collected another 116 on Sunday to push South Africa to a tall total in a rain-hit match.

MS Dhoni had chosen to bowl on winning the toss, perhaps swayed by Supersport Park's reputation of being a ground where it is easy to chase in day games. No matter what the past record, it is unlikely any team can win when its top order combusts so spectacularly and heedlessly as India's did. Barring Virat Kohli, the rest of the top six were dismissed not by unplayable deliveries but by attempts at extravagant strokes.

Rohit Sharma's horror series ended as he was bowled by Lonwabo Tsotsobe going for a loose drive through the line; Dhoni's imperious cut ended as an edge to first slip; Yuvraj Singh edged two boundaries to third man before giving catching practice to JP Duminy at point; Suresh Raina smashed a couple of fours before an upper cut sailed to third man; Parthiv Patel was the only one in the top order to inspire confidence, middling nearly every ball for the second innings in a row before falling to a debatable diving catch by Faf du Plessis at cover. India were 74 for 6 in the 14th over, and their only hope of saving the series seemed to be if the ominous clouds circling the stadium brought a massive downpour which washed away the match before the 20th over.

Enter Yusuf. He fell over reverse-sweeping Robin Peterson for a six early in his innings, but the wickets kept tumbling at the other end. With Zaheer Khan adopting a blithe step-away-and-swing approach, the end seemed minutes away, but he knuckled down after some initial scares and kept turning the strike over to Yusuf.

Indian fans would have nursed little hopes even when intermittent bursts of hitting took Yusuf to 66 off 58, and India climbed to 175 for 8 in the 33rd over. All that changed as Yusuf pounded four sixes and three fours in the next three overs to reach his century - so quickly that few realised he had reached the milestone till he raised his bat. That frenzy, through which Yusuf remained completely calm, ended with a 21-run over from Tsotsobe that brought the required-rate below five. Yusuf skied another attempted blast down the ground soon after, which du Plessis clasped to settle South African nerves.

Yusuf's ton was in absolute contrast to Amla's in the morning, when the South African chose patience over pyrotechnics to coolly compile his runs - he reached his half-century on the back of 30 consecutive singles. After Graeme Smith's troubles against Zaheer Khan continued, Amla let No. 3 Morne van Wyk be the aggressor. van Wyk grew in confidence as his innings progressed, unleashing a series of powerful cuts whenever he was given width, and even pulled off an audacious lap-shot off Munaf Patel for four.

India went in with only two quick bowlers, and their armada of spinners didn't pose too many questions to the South African batsmen. South Africa glided to 113 for 1 before Yuvraj plucked a spectacular caught-and-bowled to send back van Wyk, and had AB de Villiers stumped with a sharply turning delivery.

Amla and Duminy, the home side's two form batsmen this series, both had lives - Duminy surviving a close lbw shout and Amla dropped at square leg - and revived South Africa with a 102-run stand. The standout shot in Amla's innings was the dab to third man, perfectly timing the ball as he opened the face to pick up several boundaries, one of which brought up his century.

In the four overs that remained after an 80-minute stoppage, South Africa lost their heads and plenty of wickets as panicky running, smart bowling and attempted slogging combined to result in a collapse of 6 for 24. Amla played only two deliveries in those last four overs. India went in to lunch on a high, but there was little joy for them after the break barring Yusuf's heroics, and their dreams of a maiden series win in South Africa were shattered.

@Aina Maria Waseem Well the Shiv Sena didn't dug up the turfs when India hosted the Pakistani Hockey team in the WC Hockey and CWG in 2010.But yeah you never know with the rhetoric mongers. But as Indian fans we will be always wary of any Pakistani team as they pick themselves up for a fight from hopeless situations and they still have a better win-loss ratio. So I will never consider a Pakistani team "lowly".Perhaps you should have more faith in your team.On the oneupmanship issue, you can't help it.Some people will refuse to see reason.

And maybe that pakistani fan wrote that as a neutral and not as a pakistani? Think about it. Afterall, an intelligent person is he who can entertain a thought without believing it... As for an india-pakistan final, you're right, we all relish the contest despite fear of defeat. We will have some fun inshaAllah! :)

Dhoni's tactical failures : 1. If Dhoni was not happy with Murali Vijay, he should have called Abhinav Mukund who is the best left-hand opener in Indian domestic cricket today, along with Parthiv Patel who was SRT's replacement to open the innings. Instead, Dhoni chose to open with a make-shift opener Rohit Sharma, who already has been given way too many chances already. Secondly, Nehra should not have been dropped, this wicket was NOT suited for spinners. Dhoni used as many as 6 bowlers (4 of them were spinners) within the first 15 overs and got one wicket. Smith used only 3 (no spinners), and got 6 wickets. I know that SA have a much better bowling attack, but still you have to give your bowlers enough time to settle into their rhythm, which is most important thing for the bowlers. Dhoni is not a good captain, he is pure gambler, like one of those guys whose are siting in a casino in Las Vegas hoping to hit a jackpot.

The best point to note about Yousuf's innings was to see how he responded to the Short-pitched stuff offerred from Steyn and Morkel..arguably the best Fast-bowling pair. Hitting the spinners out of the park is anyday 'walk-in-the-park' stuff for him but it was really exciting and confidence boosting to see him taking on the taking blows and then giving it back in his own way. There is no shame (at least now, looking at the final scorecard after Yousuf's innings) for India in losing the series without so many key players but in the World Cup with pitches having not too-much bounce to offer, Indian batters should make merry of any given boling attack..Lets see..Keeping fingers crossed!!

It could be worth picking Yusuf Pathan in the test team also. Remember in a first class domestic match, he chased down a fourth innings target of more than 500 runs. It was literally a "tiring" experience seeing India draw the 3rd Test match in the recent series while trying to chase 340 odd runs. If the selectors are worth their mettle, then they can think whom to drop from the test team in case they want to consider Yusuf :-)

I don't know why people are jealous about csk!Rain can SPIN!Kohli can't!Kohli is a number 3 batsmen,we have sachin at that position.Rain comes in at around 40 overs,U have to score at that time,Not try to settle urself! I accept kohli is the best batsmen but raina cn spin, and can hit huge shots in subcontinent conditions.Remember 11 sachin or dravid cant win us the match,It's the mixture which will do us big!

  • polls on January 24, 2011, 15:31 GMT

@Indian_Rules: Dont be a frustrated by CSK wins. To your info. M Vijay is not in the WC team and so he cant play the WC matches. Every one now knows, how capable YP is and will definitly play all WC matches. Also don't under estimate Ashwin, as he is going tobe one of the finest spinners of the country. Stop talking on region wise.

@Aina Maria Waseem Cool down!A Pakistani fan talked of wiping off the Indian team in the comments section so it was natural that an Indian fan will have something to say.No matter where both the teams are placed on the points table the game of oneupmanship will go on between the fans.So there is nothing to be fret about.Pakistan is a good team but seems to be off the boil after Inzamam's retirement.I for one disliked the way the PCB coaxed ICC to have their WC matches in Srilanka rather than India.Good luck to both the teams.A India-Pakistan final in the WC will be ultimate.

  • sundarc9 on January 24, 2011, 14:39 GMT

YP played a blinder after the top order surrendered meekly, it was gr8 to see YP change the game from near hopeless situation to 50 runs of 68 balls, no doubt it was a gr8 knock one could see under pressure. In hindsight one gets the feeling YP should have changed gears and resorted back to sensible batting mode from his hammer and tongs innings at that stage. Hopefully YP will mature to earn more wins for us than so near but so far losses. Well done YP hats off to you.

I want India to win the world cup for just 1 man... Sachin Tendulkar... HE deserves it.. not for some d graded CSK fools who are getting into the team because of Mr Tamil Nadu and the cement guy

  • Indian_Rules on January 24, 2011, 13:36 GMT

India's loss was really disheartening... But now is the bigger picture and a bigger question... Will Mr Tamil Nadu ( Shrikanth ) and cement guy ( Srinivas ) use thier influence and dhoni's presence to push in CSK players into the playing 11 in the WC... well it does look a certainty.. They will play Raina ahead of Kohli and Ashwin ahead of Yusuf... If there is any injury to the batsmen they will replace him with useless vijay... All in all they will make sure that CSK wins the world cup rather than Indian team... later they can boast, IPL trophy, Chamions LEague trophy, World Cup trophy.. all belong to CSK and then use this to get more money out of sponsors... But mark my words friends... with these useless bunch of CSK players will make sure another Indian disaster in the WC campaign

  • on January 24, 2011, 12:21 GMT

Please leave pakistan alone. We pakistanis have the right to comment here as neutrals without you dragging our team into it. If a 7th ranked team beat us, we ourselves are 6th ranked so its no big deal. Its easy for everyone to say the pak-sa series happened in uae which helped us, but at that time everybody was nonetheless predicting clean sweeps. Anyway, if you people have no respect for your team and you insist on comparing them with a lowly minnow like Pakistan we are no one to stop you :P By the way, there is so much talk of tendulkar and co missing. I suppose if these guys fail to play in the worldcup and you lose, then also you people will say the same thing? Would it look good?

  • diri on January 24, 2011, 12:00 GMT

SuperSharky please dont compare Yusuf to Lance Klusner. Klusner was in a class of his own and won many many matches for SA on his own. If that was klusner batting yesterday he would have taken India to victory and not just close.....remember Lance klusner played in an era before t20 cricket yet you could say he was the reason t20 and Ipl even came came about....because he was devestating and a great entertainer and thats what people want to see

one man bcoz of whom we lost the decider n with it the series is dhoni.he said in first odi's post match presentation dat he will try make the series 'interesting'.and he did that by opting to bowl aftr losing the 4th odi due to (stupid)D/L.what sense did he make by promoting himself up?thankfully he got out soon.or else he wud hav wasted a lot of balls leaving too much to get off too little fr the tail..but for yusuf's excellent batting esterday's match was a dampener fr India.and yusuf,he dint play the 1st 2 one dayers, thanx to dhoni again for picking rohit ahead of yusuf..can anyone tell me one innings of dhoni in odis where he rescued India in circumstances such as yesterday's?he wud block, block and get out making a 50 odd from 90 balls, thereby retaining his spot in top 5.a change in the attitude of dhoni can only do good for India...let me hope India wins the WC fr one man-SACHIN...

  • on January 24, 2011, 11:51 GMT

This series should be an eye-opener to both selectors and Dhoni. Dhoni's gambling and his batting has not much paid off for the past months.Rohit,Raina,Yuvraj should be left out to play domestic matches.. Selectors are reluctant to drop these players even they fail for as many matches but these rules arenot appllicable for many others .. TIME FOR AN SEAMING ALLROUNDER TO COME FORWARD.Hope Irfan Pathan regain his fitness and form. There were doubts that Dhoni might not include Kohli in the WC final XI but he is the one who should make it first along with SRT,Sehwag,Zaheer,Bhajji,Yusuf,Gambhir.

Yusuf Pathan innings reminded me of the Great Legend Lance (Zulu) Klusener. He also use to fire under pressure with positive results for Hansie and the boys. If only Yusuf just pushed Morne Morkel around for singles and smashed all the other bowlers. Morne Morkel spoke to Graeme Smith just before the over he dismissed Pathan. The South Africans knew that Yusuf struggles with Morne's bounce or fast yorkers. But still a Great innings from Yusuf Pathan. He almost did the unthinkable, like Klusener use to do.

All those who are complaining about the D/L method revising the Indian target to +18 runs should remember the 4th Eng vs Ind ODI,2008-09 where India scored 160-something from 22 overs and England scored 178 also in 22 overs.Yet India won due to D/L method as revised target was 198.Why didn't you people criticize the method back then? When this method favors India,it's good and when it don't,it's bad! Please don't show this kind of attitude.

Such hypocrisy, from my own countrymen,it's really disgraceful. At least learn to accept defeat. Can't we just accept that SA was the better of the teams, and be done wih it?

  • U.A.1985 on January 24, 2011, 10:21 GMT

Just cannot understand a lot of indian fans here who are saying "3-2 is good, it was indian B-team, it was foreign conditions blah blah and lot of other excuses for the defeat". First of all the point to note is SA have won their matches with larger margins and India have only managed to somehow win key moments from a careless SA. The pitches have been low and slow and we have hardly seen any real green seaming pitch. In fact it is to SAs credit that they have prepared such low and slow pitches for one days because they wanted to ensure they were in good shape for the world cup.

  • Silverbails on January 24, 2011, 9:55 GMT

Oh dear, oh dear! What a shambles India were, apart from Partiv and Yusuf! And, this is what some people reckon is a WC winning team! What a joke!! Are they ever going to WIN a Test OR ODI series in SA?? Once again, we'll have to wait for maiden series' triumphs in both formats of the game in SA, IF EVER!!! And, why is India still persisting with Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj, as both have repeatedly shown complete uselessness in overseas conditions!! The more worrying problem seems to be the complete lack of anyone following the greats Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman when they eventually do retire from the Test arena.

  • Prince_Mul on January 24, 2011, 9:41 GMT

I was really waiting for Pathan to pull off a miracle, which he didn't unfortunately. No worries though..Pathan is coming into form for the world cup which augers well for India. I am not sure about the others. Some awful batting performances and poor captaincy has seen India handing over the series to SA after leading 2-1. This series is best forgotten.. lets all concentrate on the world cup... All the best India..

  • murali_knair on January 24, 2011, 9:07 GMT

I can't understand why Ashwin is in the world cup squad. He is responsible for India's defeat in the Centurion. After being with the Indian team for such a long time if he can't hold a simple catch, what is his worth in the Indian team ? Similarly selectors have to think about Suresh Raina also. He cannot be called as a new comer. He has played plenty of cricket and even after if he shows no responsibility, then he doesn"t deserve a place in the Indian team. We need responsbile middle order batsmen not once in a while performers. Mr. Srikanth is a respectable person but inclusion of Ashwin and Chawla and omission of Irfan raises some question against him.

  • on January 24, 2011, 9:01 GMT

SA bowling was too good. india will bowl better only on a few selected days. Good bowlers need to bowl consistently even when conditions don't exactly suit them, like steyn, mc grath, murali and warne

  • on January 24, 2011, 8:43 GMT

There are few things that needs to be taken into consideration ... 1. Dhoni's he in the team just for his captaincy??? 2. If this is the kind of form that Raina and Yuvi is having...why they have been selected in the WC squad.??? 3. What is this D/L method? 4. What did Dhoni try to prove by coming up the order....?????

its time for the selectors to make it in mind that if they just keep on saying that they need a young brigade to play....they have to see if the players they are selecting are good enough to play in the highest level or not...atleast Dhoni, Raina and Yuvi needs to get back to basic and play if possible 1 or 2 domestic matches to get the feeling of the ball....the way they played the entire series...did not show that they have so much runs at their back....if their past records are taken into Dada, Dravid. Dada is the best captain and Dravid is gr8 with the bat and can keep the wickets as well....

  • on January 24, 2011, 8:41 GMT

Some one rightly said, what more can you expect from the over-stuffed (monetarily) commercial actors? There was no hunger evident from the Indians in both the last two games. Rohit Sharma played as if he couldn't give a damn. He flashed at every delivery, till he got the edge. The shot selection led the Indians to their doom. Raina seemed lost. Dhoni was clueless. Yuvraj was pathetic. He, more than anyone else needs those Revital capsules. The saving grace was Pathan, and I thought with a little more application, he and Khan could have taken India to victory. They were within striking distance and could have covered the distance by merely rotating the strike. But it was not to be be. The bowling has been found wanting. Nehra was a shocker. Khan was brilliant, while Patel was steady. Harbhajan disappointed. The part-timers played their part, but were over used, at times. Dhoni kept well, but his captaincy waivered under pressure.

  • on January 24, 2011, 8:21 GMT

Some others should have followed Yusuf's policy of hanging around till he reached 20 before doing anything extravagant. Dhoni came as if he has premeditated a policy. Rohit was psyched even before he entered and didnt learn from Parthiv at other end. Perhaps we should haven taken Laxman, Dravid and Pujara for ODIs in SA instead of Raina, Yuvi and Rohit.

Once again Yousuf Pathan proof his performance, he is elgible for India will win every match if give chance to 2nd or 3rd batsman down to bring Indian run rate high then other experienced batsman play sigles and go to win a match. so need one more batsman after he bat for the support.

He also proof his performance not only in India but also other subcontinent.

For the selection commitee information we need alrounder like Kabil Dev. Now the best choice is Irfan Pathan.

It is nice to know that all is not lost even if 6 to 7 wickets fall in a heap. This effort should keep the confidence level high but all of them have to knuckle down and contribute and not ride on fantasy stuff like this, always.

If all the batsmen contribute we can look at 300 level scores in the world cup. Since in the sub-continent pitches even the 300 plus scores cannot be defended . We shlould strategise keeping this in mind always.

The bowlers too should start setting their minds in bowling in our dust bowls and shrug out of the S.A type pitches and start adapting quickly.

This tour had brought about team play to a large extent and would do a world of good if that kind of responsible approach is practised and implemented.

  • bsnand on January 24, 2011, 7:46 GMT

Dhoni's performance has been very bad with bat & keeping for quite sometime. I feel parthive patel is much better. Every one knows, he doesn't like most of the seniors players particulerly sehwag. He has been successful in keeping him away from ODI. He never allowed sehwag to bowl a single over in the test serious.

  • Indiaiancrickinfo on January 24, 2011, 7:45 GMT

........And No words of appreciation STILL from MS Dhoni yet for Yusuf....In his last knock against NZ when he won the match, MS Dhoni Praised Harbajan but not Yusuf. After that knock, Yusuf was left out of the initial two one dayers in SA!!! No one asked why?Yesterday he went overboard and said that "if India would have won the match out of Yusuf's Knock, that would have been a BIT TOO MUCH" (each and every match won by the country is never too much Mr Dhoni)...Which again raises questions about his "personal Grudge against the Pathan Brothers" At the Cost of Our Country.. Clearly one feels MS Dhoni is a Dictator in Indian Cricket and BCCI is his Puppet. Poor Yusuf!!

  • crazyoldchap on January 24, 2011, 7:44 GMT

the SA / IND series is over with a lot of questions that are left to be answered. Is either team capable of winning the world cup? NO!!! India continues to be carried by individual performances and is not going to be a serious threat at the WC. Their only saving grace is that they are playing at home. SA will remain the eternal chokers and when push comes to shove they will choke. They showed that in a couple of games in this series and the only thing that saved them today was the D&L calculation. The D&L is mind does a target increase by 18 runs from what a team has scored in their allotted overs? Scrap the D&L and just call it a dead game.....will make everyone so much happier.

  • navyaprakash on January 24, 2011, 7:38 GMT

  • damodhar on January 24, 2011, 7:35 GMT

It was one of the best knocks I ve ever seen. Yousuf Pathan was simply brilliant. He showed how guts and will power play a key role in any success. I would say, even Sachin Tendulkar, whom I regard the most, may not be able bat in such a situation where the team has only a wicket or two at disposal. This should be a learning lesson for the selectors who had not been consistent and shoved him off.Hats off to Yousuf and I am happy that he's in good nick right in time for the World Cup.- Damodhar(Sharjah)

It is utter nonsense that a specialist opener Vijay is dropped to accomodate rohit sharma who is also a failure this season. Afterall, vijay never had the trouble in facing the seamers like rohit or raina. it was a good catch by steyn that saw him off in the 3rd ODI and even in the second ODI vijay got out trying to accelrate the run rate in the powerplay. If he cannot be sustained for one series even in the absence of main openers why the hell should he be included in the team. why cant Dhoni or the think tank show the same patience they showed on raina, rohit, yuvraj etc to vijay. really unfortunate.

  • BULTY on January 24, 2011, 6:26 GMT

The 5th ODI was a drama of sorts. First the SA batsmen dominate; rain intervenes, SA crash out in pursuit of hot runs. The joker D/L comes into the picture. He tells India, "hey man, you chase more in less Ha! Ha! Ha! What a paradox. It's time D/L is dumped to the dust bins. Just as India is opposing the UDRS, India should oppose D/L method. I remember our Anil Kumble gave a more reasonable & workable solution, which was not accepted. Coming to the match, it's a shame that India did not play the mind game well. What was the asking rate at the beginning of their innings? Just about 6, then where was the need to panic. But for Yusuf's heroic innings, India must have ended the match, series etal shamelessly. The match would have turned differently had Duminy been given out LBW to Yuvraj? Horrible umpiring decisions despite two good umpires.

  • changez_malik on January 24, 2011, 6:22 GMT

Well played Yusuf, a game to watch infact, as a Pakistani i must say indian team in the recent past has been performing better, but have lost the concentration while the grand cup is around. Their batting is much much dependent on big 2-3 names, if they are no more there, the result is obvious as today.

  • on January 24, 2011, 6:20 GMT

Well .. the better team won but it was well evident they r better in these conditions only. Yusuf gave us wat only can dream of.i dont have words 2 praise him.this was expected of him but no in d conditions & opposition. he turned his weekness in to his strength.this time short ball was a fear not to him but to bowlers. A GREAT INN UNDER PRESSURE, AGST QUALITY BOWLING. HATS OFF TO HIM. on the other hand MOM was given to Hashim was not a gud decision. it sud have been shared bcas of YUSUF inn was incredible. you r deny him the reward just bcas other teammates not play gud ckt. Wat sort if justice is this ? Hashim is a gud player but not a gud sports-person. he sud have straight way refused to take the MOM alone. Too selfish for a sports-person. on to the series back : SA were favrate for this . but poor ckt on their part let INA with a chance to it which was spoiled by poor dencive captaincy by MS. India sud look 4 some other player as captain. after coming so clos u let it go so esily

  • SaneAnalyst on January 24, 2011, 6:19 GMT

Despite Yousuf' s performance I would say this was a forgetful ODI series for India. Their batting just doesnt look good at all.Always Seemed like its a bangladesh playing against SAF. They struggled even reaching 200 in every match when SAF looked at ease reaching total. Dhoni always cribbed about the pitch's behavior but look at the guys who have stood up even in these pitches and against Steyn and Morkel. As a fan i have been very disappointed with this performance and dont have any hopes for the world cup as well. India is good with fab 3 in tests but in ODIs they dont look threatening at all.

  • diri on January 24, 2011, 6:13 GMT

I have to agree with Saira Butt. Sa were the better team in the ODI and tests. It could so easily have been 3-0 and 5-0 if the umpiring was good. But i dont want to go on and on about that i want to congradulate India for the fight they showed this whole series. This is the best Indian team to come to SA and they have gained alot of new fans including me....they are my second favourite team now. well done India and goodluck for the WC

  • vkkossery on January 24, 2011, 6:12 GMT

The performance of the Indian team is nothing to be ashamed of as they were without some of their star batsmen. However the batting display was not up to the mark barring a few performances from Kohli, Pathan and to some extend from Parthiv Patel. While Indias inability to get on top of real pace on a bouncy wicket was exposed to some extend in this series the SA teams vulnerability against pressure situations was really pathetic in the 2nd one dayer. To be a world Champion both teams need to sit and introspect on their handing of situations and lack of ability in their respective chinks in the armour.

  • cricfan_india23 on January 24, 2011, 6:10 GMT

Its time for MS to check his own perfomance. I dont think he is good batsmen or a wicketkeeper and he is in the team only because of captainship.

  • DonkieHoed on January 24, 2011, 6:07 GMT

Well, end of a fantastic series, with great performances from both sides. Test series ended shared, which was BLOODY well done by India considering their previous performances. Showed a ton of grit and fight, often outfighting us! The ODI's, clearly won by SA, no arguing about luck et al. Only irritating thing about this whole tour? Indian supporters on Cricinfo giving ZERO credit to SA for anything. Disgusting.

And well done to Pathan, that guy is scary! If the top order hang around, he's going to be a matchwinner pretty much most ofl the time - Wish SA had someone like that!

  • vish57 on January 24, 2011, 6:05 GMT

The reality is the selection of team on reputation; We still select team on reputation and on the opinion of selectors; Raina has crossed 50 once in last 20, Yuvaraj is neither a match winner now or able to play 10 overs in an ODI innings; Dravid and Laxman would have definitely performed better than Raina, Yuvaraj, Rohit, Vijay; players are selected because of IPL connection and performance in IPL rather than in ODI. While it is an open secret that middle order is a big whole for world cup, we also lack batsmen who can bowl medium pace like Mohinder Amarnath or Robin Singh or Ganguly; so also a medium pacer who can bat like Ifran Pathan. Every one of us emotionally wants India to win, the reality is we can reach quarter finals only, and some extra ordinary performance from some player or extremely poor performance from the opposition like the just concluded 2nd ODI where SA lost rather India won may take us through. Australia, SA, England are better teams than India, let us accept.

  • pjain05 on January 24, 2011, 6:04 GMT

again they lost series on the SA soil. what i think team india is heavily depend on tendulkar and sehwag. if they peform indian win otherwise they lost 8 out of10 matches. The most disappointing and worst batesmen of indian team is MS dhoni. ya he is a good captain but not a good player except the luck going on in his way. he is not a leader who lead the team by his performance rather by luck. but despiate of this series lost india should win the world cup. but there win is totally depend on tendulkar performance if he play well indian should win and if not ...then we all know the result. .

Can someone please realise that SA needs a new wicketkeeper. Leave AB to focus on his batting. Sure if cricinfo does a article on his batting stats as wicketkeeper vs not wicketkeeper there will be a big difference. And also you would never have put Jonty behind the stumps, why put the only fielder in the world that can match him behind the stumps.

*****If this innings doesn't prompt guys Yui, Raina & Sewagh to buckle up for the coming up matches then nothing will. This shows that Intensity will take you all long long way not necessary that you have the techiniques to play impact innings like this one*****

  • mithunkrish on January 24, 2011, 5:19 GMT

Sumeet! It shows only your bench strength. Raina is a joke other than sub continental pitches. But when you are wearing India colors you are expected to perform all over. I will play only my backyard is okay if he is staying for his home state in Ranji. Gambhir - How many matches he would play continuously is a big question. In every third match he is injured and you bring One Murali Vijay and forget him when Gambhir is back from injury. There again, Murali Vijay batting performance is atrocius in S.A.

  • mithunkrish on January 24, 2011, 5:11 GMT

Result only shows that our bench strength for openers is zero. Equally, middle order is failing with Dhoni contributing nil to the team cause.

I had maintained that as far Indian Selectors are concerned that Dhoni is a lucky mascot which had benefited India at many a times. Law of averages will catch up. In some of the matches Dhoni's captaincy has left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, whenever we win matches irrespective of blunders on the field and or inadequate captaincy, media hype it so much that all the shortcomings swept under the carpet.

Virat Kohli and Yusuf Pathan are the only solace at the moment.

A question? Is Dhoni's wicket keeping world class???? Less said is better about his batting in one dayers. A cool head much touted about media is the only qualification for captaincy??? I would prefer a Ricky Pontings aggression than this cool business!!!!!

Consistently poor performance of top order in south Africa. Please don't see dreams to win this world cup by having such bogus players in your team. India has only best batsmen on papers not on crease. lol. Its better to open your innings by sending Yousaf Pathan with Zaheer or Munaf Patel... • SRIDWI on January 24, 2011, 4:46 GMT

Guys! it is not the media hype that pathan's innings overpowered Amla's innings. Amla's was the match setter given the fact that he was ably supported by vanwyk and duminy. Pathan did it single handedly that too after 8 wkts were down for just 100 odd runs. It is remarkable in any form of cricket and people who have played cricket would understand the significance. But for his innings, it was a one sided match, thanks to some erroneous decisions of dhoni in team selection and strategies

  • on January 24, 2011, 4:43 GMT

indian cricket fans are always unpredictable as the indian team when the team looses a match they start questioning the credentials of the team and after that one win will change their opinion. ON the whole they will start telling india couldnot be beaten by anybody. We have STRS SHEWAGS DHONIS PATHANS AND GHAMBIRS even all these are there I would say india is the no.1 chokers in world cricket now and my strong opinion is that india wont be able to hold the world cup this time also.Hope for the best iam not saying this because india lost the series yesterday. Take the case of Aus they even after defeated in tests they came back strongly in ONEDAYS against strong England team .there comes the difference Take the case of SL they are real fighters they are also from the subcontinent but they never fear the fast bowlers of SA and AUS. All these are proven facts in the past .I dont think it will change in the near future .I think SL or Aus might hold the next world cup.

  • boopathi.raj on January 24, 2011, 4:04 GMT

A Fantastic knock by yusuf pathan and contraz to him. First of all indian batsman's to learn how to stay in the ground and to make singles instead of playing big shots. Dhoni changing down is order and playing the same shots again and got out and think is giving some catch pratice to SA fielder's and he is not performing for the past series and raina too. Yuvi is surviving in the team because of his blowing and fielding not for batting. They are all trying to play T20 matches even if you have enough overs. If someone stayed with yusuf india would win the match. This is shame to say we were leading in starting and end of with series loss. India would work some strategy before going to WC especially for the batman's Dhoni,Raina and yuvi.

  • on January 24, 2011, 3:51 GMT

judging a team just by a series is not the way to go. India had lost to Bangladesh n srilanka to get knocked out of even super six just before they went on to clinch t20 world cup. its all about luck, skill, handling pressures and many more. they still got a chance and i being an Indian do believe in them. i that was a completely different pitch, location and scenario than the upcoming world cup. but yes its not just done like that. experienced must use their skills and young ones must use their talent to max. Dhoni has created records as captain flipping india from 7th rank to 2nd and he can do it still but needs to work in his bat. yuvraj, yusuf, raina, sehwag, gambhir, kohli etc can be match winners but need to work hard. india do lack sheer pace attack but have enough for asian pitches. good luck to my team.

  • harshthakor on January 24, 2011, 3:47 GMT

Yusuf Pathan played one of the greatest one day International innings ever in cricket history. His batting reminded you of an executioner beheading a convict or a bomber destroying an airbase. At one stage it looked as though all was lost but Pathan 's thunder took India to a brink of a highly improbable victory.

India's middle-order form of Yuvraj,Raina anad Dhoni is of major concern. It is creditable that India came so close and even made the fist of a losing case after having dramatically won 2 matches in the series.India missed the services of Tendulkar,Gambhir and Sehwag which was crucial.

To be justifies these series shud belong to SA for all standards, they bowled well compared to india, they batted well, being despite india huge fan, this series was sure belong to SA. I liked dhoni captaincy and the decission he make but suddenly this series idk if he is trying jus different options to prepare for worldcup they were absurd and stupid to be frank. Also the main thing itch after todays match, he didnt even praise YUSUF marvelous innings which he shoud hav to boost his cinfidence. He managed to overcum his weakness of shortball and played in SA pitches where he didnt able to score a bit. He should get serious with his decissions now hopefully with 3 batsman which india miss today. Also we cant say its india B team cuz its not, we didnt wanted to play this team we forced too cuz of injury, also SA had a team B if u think like that without their best middle order Kallis. So that was a stupid excuse. Also it wud be wise decission if dravid wud hav given chance in odi again.

  • I_AM_INDIA_SUPPORTER on January 24, 2011, 1:53 GMT

India fans cool...we have seen this many times. All the best to RSA.forget the match past is India should concentrate on batting performances.A world best batting lineup shouldn't fell for (74-6).ok,it's all in the game but when quick wickets fall the middle order batsmen should lift a game.why India not showing confidence when losing wickets(except yousuf).think, yusuf only plays better when India in a critical position.(is only a yusuf batsmen????).this mentality of Indian batsmen should be changed...if yusuf can shine in south africa pitches played only 3 odi's..then other batsmen played more odi's than him why not get a big scores.if one man gets fifty yesterday the match would have changed...

I am again and again saying "team should be selected only based on performance than seniority"

well, first of all,its appeal to this raising urself above ur caste and region.I have following points to make 1)majority of the matches india has won last year, have either been die to good bowling, or some individual batting like yousuf,laxman.etc. team effort ,in batting , is mostly missing. when u hav 7 batsman, atleast 5 are expcetd to fire. 2)IPL has ruined these guys. murli vijay, raina ,rohit sharma are IPL guys, and yuvraj is out of form. how many chances will they get. dhoni takes side of yuvi and raina, as they are his frnds..pathetic..he hinself hasn't scored in past 6 months. 3)many of matches india lost, were due to all out, when there were overs, we need atleast somebody to drop anchor, like dravid. agreed, dravid is test player, but he changed a lot earlier for one day.even, pujara and parthiv patel should get more chances, as they can block, and block. raina, murli and other just cant block, they just know how to slog.

  • KiwiRocker- on January 23, 2011, 23:12 GMT

Pathan's inning is a smoky mirror that is distracting from the fact that Indian much famed batting line up failed in match after match against SA without the best ever cricketer to play the game J Kallis. India actually should be considered to have lost the series by 4-1 as India's win by one run was thanks to a poor decision by umpire against Botha. This series has exposed India's lack of quality bowling and more importantly it shows that India will be relying on its openers to win matches in WC. Pathan sure did well but he was fed by SA second string bowlers as he did not face Steyn or scored against him. Pathan has been tried and failed against other teams and he has been fount out. India's weakest link is their middle order batting and bowling. Matches in WC will be won by quality 5-8 batsmen.Indian needs match winners like AFridi and Razzaq. India has selcted players based on reputation in WC instead of form. Raina and Yuvraj do not deserve a place based on their current form!

We won 2 matches. some may say, its luck.... but according to me, We India kept cool in pressure.IN THE SECOND ODI - MUNAF WAS COOL WHILE SA INDIVIDUALS WENT FOR GLORY! We are not chokers. BUT YOU DID CHOKE - YOU LOST THE TWO CRUCIAL GAMES VS A LOWER RANKED TEAM WITH ONLY 5 BATSMEN 3. World cup is in Indian subcontinent. I respect the talent of Steyn, Morkel and totsobe. But, here 2 of 3 will get beaten for more than 6 per over. TIME WILL TELL - I SUSPECT YOU MAY BE RIGHT BUT THEY HAVE OTHER OPTIONS 4. Apart from fast bowling, South africa had nothing special. BOTHA BOWLED WELL TODAY AND PETERSON LOOKS LIKE HE'LL DO A YUVI-TYPE JOB, THEY HAVE OTHER SLOW OPTIONS AND HAVE A REASONABLE RECORD IN THE SUB-CONTINENT 5. India will play with main 11 in world cup.SO, HOPEFULLY, WILL SA (KALLIS PROVIDES BALANCE AND ALTERNATIVES) 6. We are waiting. WE ALL ARE

  • mahjut on January 23, 2011, 22:48 GMT

the other fact mentioned is how well India did despite their bowling attack. SA targeted that too by picking only six people who have any batting creedence but with Smith struggling vs Zak (only got out to him 1 of 5 times but was struggling) it was effectively 5 batsmen and with Bhajji and Zak bowling well - the experiment stumbled. but in the crucial games, despite the LOONG tail, the decision to replace Parnell with Peterson worked. Batting second with a tail that long and an opener not doing his job, the pressure will be selector-inflicted. on the other hand, if the 5 are functioning, in a 50 over match it may work ... but SA now have the added burden of believable myth hung round their necks I think they'll desperately want Kallis back ... and bowling ... in the WC (rather than Parnell or Peterson). mybe Tahir for Botha - at least in the warm up games, and give Faf a few overs in those games too. Looking forward to the WC - SL or India DO seem most likely,

  • Nampally on January 23, 2011, 22:27 GMT

Dhoni's tactics need to be reviewed by the Selectors. He dropped Vijay, a regular opener in favour of Sharma who is not an opener.Secondly he decided to go with with 6 different bowlers in the first 15 overs not giving chance for his bowlers to settle down to any length. Thirdly he consistently dropped the most likely wicket taker, Ashwin, in all 5 ODI's. Today India were in the danger of being shot out in <20 overs till Pathan & Zaheer saved India from a utter humiliation. Pathan was a solo batsman who had guts to stand there and bat as bravely as he did. He literally slaughtered the SA boeling. The same bowling where Sharma, Dhoni, Raina, Kohli fell like nine pins. India's performance both in bowling & batting was totally non existent except from Pathan, Zaheer in batting and Zaheer, Munaf & Yuvraj in bowling. This is a 11 man team game. Fortunately half this team will be replaced by others. Congratulations to SA for a fine win. Kudos top Pathan for a most dazzling century.

  • mahjut on January 23, 2011, 22:04 GMT

I notice that somehow this Pathan innings has distracted from the fact that INDIA CHOKED. Still, posts here say that SA would've if X and Y. NO! India choked - the teams were not equal; of 5 games, India won two - neither vital - but the worst thing for India (#2 ODI team) is that they let go a 2:1 lead to SA (#4 ) on pitches intended to simulate subcontinent pitches. Dhoni said after the fourth match "the 5th game will be about who handles the pressure best" it was a smart thing to say with this chokers tag branded on SA - but the fact is, SA handled the pressure best. Not just that, the two crucial matches in this series: game 4 and 5 were BOTH won by SA!! Not that it will matter one iota (and the below posts back me up), I know that the next article that mentions "choking" will be referring to SA. India choke!? no, let's focus on the fact that Yusuf - with NOTHING to lose vs an attack that had already done their job - scored a some sweet boundaries ... Good luck both in the WC

India will win world cup, if other teams withdraw from tournament. why ? Sachin is great. but now, he is not a match winner. he always choke in world cup deciders. he is old and he needs a lot of rest between matches. Sehwag plays too much risk shots. Looks like opposite team will give 10 runs in one over and get his wicket in the same. Gambir is injured. Better than Sachin as opener. but fail to convert starts. Yuvaraj is not confident . he lost his form. Dhoni strugles against every bowler. Kohli cant control his innings.. going for all balls. Raina is cool headed, butl restricted by short ball. Yousuf fires or misfires.

Bowling Zaheer shines with his mental ability , but he can be measured. Harbajan is a failure in india or anywhere. Ashwin wont be given chance. Chawla ????? poor selection Nehra.... why India still allow him in team... He didn't shine even in Fast bowler's paradise. Sreesanth .... before getting proper line...half of match will be over. Munaf isn't skilled.

  • willmot on January 23, 2011, 21:35 GMT

@Saira ,Correct. Why (quite typically) does the headline in this very article refer to Pathan and not Amla when it was Amla's innings that won the game, something Pathan couldn't do? The answer , more Indian hype from it's commercial powerbase (due mainly to a population of almost 1.5 billion individuals rather than any cricketing talent)

This augurs really well for India in WC2011. When the hell will Dhoni start performing like a matchwinner...........

Mr. u look on ur team defeat and dont talk about Pakistan. Pak loss ODI series by 3-2 in which one match was only 1 run win. While ur team has one run win and 3 defeats that means only won ONE match.

If u r very keen to talk about Pakistan then check Pak and Ind ODI history??? How many times Pak has beaten and who has more wins.

U will see Pak will crush ind in Semifinal. Remember this day and date.

Incompetent captaincy from MSD, his batting was critical and he too was a big flop inthe odi series.Hope we gave seen the last of Rohit sharma inspite of the talent he has, Uthappa would have done definitely better. It is clear MSD has a problem with Sreesanth which is unfortunate, despite his antics, Sreesanth had helped this team to achieve the # 1 in tests,he could have made the difference in the finals too, yet Dhoni replaced (hide) Nehra with Chawla so that Sreesanth cannot expose what India was missing. Honestly MSD only deserve to be test captain/player, IndI need to breed a new ODI /T20 captain with Virat or Raina.

  • Amar_bw on January 23, 2011, 19:57 GMT

I think both teams were equal. But on this wicket and situation, India should have batted first. They could have played slow till 25-30 overs and then increased the run rate to score about 250 runs. This is because of the fact that SA has the tendency to choke while batting second.

we played really brilliantly on this tour and a fighting spirit shown by our players. All were saying Styen and Morkel troubled our batsmen , yes they did...but we pulled out close games with our limited and not so effective bowling lineup. What if we had a bowler like Styen and Morkel??? we would have crushed SA in test as well as ODI. I would Dhoni ( nowadays he acts like an old man) to play his natural game rather than telling Yusuf to play his natural game.

3 tips to India to win world cup....u may say foolish...but this team will not win if not for these changes

    1. Dhoni should be dropped as captain and Ghambir be the captain 2. Sachin should bat at no. 4 3.Yousuf shud bat at no. 6

To "ratedstfu44" and "Sumit Agrahari".....have some optimism guys. Simply looking at the negative side, rather than considering the fact that this was India's best performance ever in SA, who have got the best bowling attach in the world and the conditions suited them too. Indian bowlers were rocking, just the batting youngsters struggled. But the veterans were missing, if they would have been there, their presence not only as players would have enhanced performance, but their presence in the team and their experience would have made a lot of difference. God, learn to watch the game properly!

  • on January 23, 2011, 19:34 GMT

I really don't understand what dhoni is up to. why is he in the team? He doesn't deserve to be in the team specially when we have a lot of good youngsters waiting for the chance. He has just pure luck with wins in recent years with some good players in the team. BUT HE IS ZERO. no contribution from him lately.

well played S.A. well for India no worries. World Cup is in Sub-continent so on flat tracks India will SMACK everyone. Honestly Sri Lanka Looks the Best team by Far from the rest. Good batting, decent Bowling attack, Great Fielding unit, Good Captain plus Playing at their home ground. As far as India is concerned Great Batting strength specially in subcontinent, decent fielding but poor bowling attack. they are much dependent on zaheer Khan and Bhajji. let say if any of these two bowler has a bad day, India look very mediocre. moreover, there are two many part timers in the team and good teams like England S.A or Australia will capitalize on part timers.usually Zaheer and Bhajji struggle against good sides on batting friendly tracks so India can only win if they bat first in every game and set massive target to chase. my four Semi-finalist srilanka, England, S.A and Australia or India

Very nice to see Yusuf doing well and cementrating his place in Indian side for the WC. A tournament that would be a lot poorer for the exclusion of the most explosive and exciting limited overs batsman of his generation.

  • BICHU77 on January 23, 2011, 19:24 GMT

none of the indian batsment got out on a deserving body tried to make a partnership...result of the series is a right one as india's two win were SA know why dhoni is in the team now because he is the captain of the side.....otherwise i dont think he deserve a chance to be there with his recent performance with bat weather batting first or second....can any one including cricinfo people can break this point with your data...he is shadow of what he was earlier.....and his strike rate diminished to below average in all formats of the game(he was struggling to hit ball cleanly even in t20 and ipl matches....) and his average already started to as well........ i hope selectors are happy enough with rohit and vijay to give other talents in the country a break.....we are lucky that WC in India....god bless indian team in WC..

  • cricket_for_all on January 23, 2011, 19:22 GMT

SA deserves this victory. Hats off to Yusuf. I disagree with some people's comment that Yusuf should be cautious after run rate is under control. He was not playing with recognize batsmen but rather He was simply playing with bowlers (Zahir) with luck. Zahir can get out anytime and SA can take the rest in a single over. The only option Yusuf had was to continue the attack and finish off the game. Unfortunately it didn't work. I think India should send Yusuf at #5 the situation like this. I really really impressed with Yusuf but unfortunately India is using him properly(His bowling is even comparable to a full time bowler).

  • Mitcher on January 23, 2011, 19:19 GMT

Didn't India win the toss?!? I'd been led to believe by these forums that only reason India have lost a match on this tour has been because of losing the toss (seems I have been grossly misled).

  • cric7 on January 23, 2011, 19:18 GMT

few questions: 1)why dhoni chose to field? 2) why he allowed easy singles in last few games. 3) when will he start scoring some runs 4)why there was no top order support to y.pathan? 5)why benefit of doubt did not favor Parthiv? 6)why Simon said not out when JP Duminy was plumb? 6)why 18 runs added to SA's total when only one batsman left? 7)why did D/L really think last wicket stand would yield 18 runs? 8)why Dhoni promoted himself to #4? 9)why Chawla was included while pitch needed a pacer? 10) above all, why Dhoni has issues with game changers? Why he did not appreciate y.pathan's effort? anybody can hit the ball out of park. It needs a batsman of y.pathan's caliber to crack meaningful speedy 100. Hello Captain?

  • bharat1121 on January 23, 2011, 19:17 GMT

dhoni made india losing the chance to win both odi and test series .this time indian were knowing the condition better as they have been playing in sa for IPL.perhaps dey were casual in their approach especially the batsma. look at youraaj,he behaves as if he has got the permanant seat in de team.rohit is wasting his talent and plays like t20 everytime. dont why dey did not called pujara who is much better batsman in terms of technique. today even they have shown the willingness to stay over the wicket, india would have been on winning side.bth the matches were won by the bowlers.india failes in sa series from the batsman perspective. in tests we draw de series as we has sachin and laxman dere. but in odi we were always looking for de infom bastman kohli. dhoni should be sacked as a player.

  • djdrastic on January 23, 2011, 19:13 GMT

Fantastic series . India made us fight hard till the bitter end.

This is certainly not the India of old ,that get steamrolled when playing away from home. If Pathan keeps his form going , he will be an absolutely unstoppable matchwinner come World Cup.

I'm a bit worried about our own form going into the WC . We seem to be losing games from virtually unloseable positions.

On a side node Parnell and Pieterson were absolutely dreadul . Both of them will have to up their games a whole lot.

  • on January 23, 2011, 19:08 GMT

3-2 is a pretty fair result. Indian batsmen failed - more of them, more often than the SA batters. Indian bowling exceeded expectations thru the series but cd have been tighter at times. I like this result because it will not make India complacent and take the WC for granted. The 'formidable' batting line up carries big ifs: the top three need to recover in good time and are not hampered by the injuries; the out of form Yuvraj and Dhoni must find form at the right time in the WC. Kohli and Yusuf shd maintain their form. Zaheer and Bhajji must replicate their deeds on sub continenetal soil.

  • shrastogi on January 23, 2011, 19:04 GMT

Just to add to my previous comment. Present D/L system - does it distinguish between quality of resources left while chasing ? Even if you dont play all 11 batters suppose in the present setup a team startegically withdraws two of top batters as no 10 & 11 while chasing as its main bowlers are good hitters and have batted at top. Now are the resources same as 8 wickets down with tailenders ? Surely not :-). Off course this set of series of 9 matches was 4-4-1 not 3-3-3 :-).

  • ratedstfu44 on January 23, 2011, 18:58 GMT

The better team won. INdia have nothing to cheer. The score 3-2 looks competitive...but it wasnt. SA dominated everyhere.

  • on January 23, 2011, 18:55 GMT

@Night-Watchman--- I think you mean Yusuf Pathan and not Irfan! And, as an Indian...we were beaten fair and square after a hard fought series. We need out top order to fire and with Gambhir, Sachin and Viru back...on OUR tracks, I think we are alright! dhoni baba...Runs..Please~!

  • on January 23, 2011, 18:52 GMT

@SamRoy: Thanks for agreeing with me on some of the points. However, the ball has to have a chance of hitting the stumps. Hawkeye showed it going over the top, if only just. If the UDRS was in place, the out call would have been overturned since it wasn't clipping the bails. The umpires' call [ of out] stands only when the ball is hitting the stumps or clipping . Thats all I am saying. And just because a batsman does not play a ball, does not mean he should be given out as compared to a batsman who plays [ and misses and gets hit on the pads ] and has a similar appeal against him. Eg: Strauss 2nd innings, 3rd ball, Gabba. No Shot offered, too high, rightly given not out. And Hawkeye is 99% accurate for all practical purposes. It clearly takes the variable bounce into account. And lastly, I have followed this great game for the past 15 years, so i hope i know the laws of cricket :)

  • on January 23, 2011, 18:51 GMT

@Saira: Send the Pakistan team to south Africa with full bench strength and see result. The only possible outcome is white wash in all format. Remember Australia tour in 2009-10. They lost every match that too playing with first choice players. India managed to draw the test series, won T20 and lost the ODI by close margin. I think your down because your team has been thrashed by 7th ranked team with more than 200 odd balls and nine wickets remaining. Stop worrying about India and lok after your own team

  • on January 23, 2011, 18:51 GMT

I dont see how can we compare India with SA. Though the score line reads 3-2, but there more to it. India were completely outclassed in 3 matches they lost. And the 2 matches we won, we shud consider ourselves lucky. Also the test match we won was largely because of the miracle by Laxman. So there's nothing special abt Indian teams performance. from statistics point of view see our our primiere batsman like raina, vijay, dhoni, yuvraj fared in the odis. Even sachin was miserable in the 2 matches he had played. Good decision by him to leave SA, rather than being counted among the non performers. Zaheer, harbhajan have shown more mettle in bating than the top order. i dont see much prospect either for the future. We have stopped selecting batsman based on merit or technique. We now selct more more of a utility player. The selection is based upon IPL performance.

  • corporaterock on January 23, 2011, 18:41 GMT

Wow, India lost 1 series and everybody wants Dhoni out of the team. Do you expect him to pull a Steve Waugh win 20 matches in a row? Gosh you people can never be satisfactory even if its a 5-0 win.

  • Ra.. on January 23, 2011, 18:37 GMT

It seems, T20 format has ruined the young Indian brigade of cricketers in ODI series. Through out the series, the batting line up lacked any sensible batting. Everybody was always trying to hit bigger ones even if they could have managed with traditional ODI flow. The youngsters should have understood that they have got time to settle down in the middle, overs to manage the runs and only thing they need to control is fall of wickets. Dhoni and Yuvi, who are experienced players in the team, also lacked self control.. India really missing Gambhir and SRT. After 8down at 119, it was obviously lost match, but YP and ZK gave hope until YP lost his control over mind. It is really not advisable to keep on trying for bigger ones even if situation is under control. India needed 5runs per over wen YP tried to attacked Steyn, really foolish. YP also had no control over many of his shots, as he was lossing his balance to fall on the pitch, only pure lluck to get him till that score!!

  • RameshSubramaniam on January 23, 2011, 18:36 GMT

Being an SA cricket fan, I am scared about their chances in the world cup. Cape town is the most similar ground to the sub continent. Though Morkel is spot on in the series, I am afraid whether his length will suit in Indian pitches(he is not going to get the same bounce as SA pitches). I am not sure either about Tsosobe either. I can see he will go for 60 runs in every match. Hope Kallis can bowl, otherwise I cannot rate SA ahead of India, Aus and SL in subcontinent conditions.

  • AeyKay on January 23, 2011, 18:31 GMT

South Africa never deserved the series.... it was gifted by India's experimental top and middle batting order. This gift was further decorated by media's hobby to garland South African bowlers unnecessarily.... South Africa wont even qualify for semi-finals.... Remember it was like India's B team with respect to top order batting line...

  • Umair_umair on January 23, 2011, 18:31 GMT

For all those talking about duckworth and umpiring decisions. This is a useless debate. Come to the issue. Focus on the way top order batting has failed since 2010 in tests and ODI . How many matches Indian team saved, won or made respectable totals because of Laxman, Harbachan, Pathan, Zaheer, even Ishant Sharma. If remove the contributions of these players, what would have been the results?

Secondly, who is to be balmes for not using referral system? In all those series, Indian team was the one refusing the review system and we supported that stance. Who is to be blamed for that? kis sey complain kerein ?

For duck worth system, it takes into account the match situation. SA was 226 or 3 and with 7 wickets remaining and power play in hand; Amla and Duminy set to launch. They were abviously looking to get a score of 285. Then came the rain and disturbed all their plans and rytham. They should have been compensated for that. By the way, wht 98/7 has to do with D/L system.

  • willmot on January 23, 2011, 18:27 GMT

@Saira. Spot on.Indians are unable to and have never taken a loss with a modicum of dignity. Crying foul and quite absurdly elevating the losing players to greater heights is the normal response.

In the 23rd over scores for both teams was 119 at that stage of their respective innings. But, India had lost 8 wickets while SA only 2 wickets. For the next 18 overs SA were clueless about how to get the last 2 wickets. Once again they showed that they have problems finishing off a match. On the other hand Yusuf Pathan was in the zone today an maybe SA just had to ride him out...

  • on January 23, 2011, 18:23 GMT

Even though India lost we can take a few positives from the series and prepare the out of form players beforehand Dhoni should check his batting form and lead the team from the front while batting himself. He should come little up the order to stabilize the innings and keep the momentum going.

  • Night-Watchman on January 23, 2011, 18:23 GMT

Irfan Pathan is very good. He will be come truly great when he plays the game out in his mind. He had done very well to bring the run rate to below 5 with another 3 overs to go in the Power Play. Now, when they bring on Morne, he MUST have the presence of mind to play him out for singles and twos. His powerful hitting had sent panic waves in the SA camp, if they exhaust Morne and Steyn, then you have the whole cake for carving up. That is what separates winning habitually to the usual valiant effort but... story MIND OVER MATTER.

I had some not so laudatory remarks about the 4th ODI bulletin by Sid Ravindran. Cricinfo didnt publish it!!! There are only 9 comments for the 4th ODI bulletin and comments were closed early. Why??? Dont you people want feedback?

Let me inform everybody, Yousuf is not a part time bowler, look at his bowling in IPL and more importantly in domestic cricket. He bowls regularly and has taken lots of wickets.Part timers are Yuvi, Raina and Rohit. MS has not only failed to perform but also failed in ruining a talented all-rounder's career. Now we need to look at Irfan and I really would like to explore possibilities of having him WC squad.I think MS days are numbered and WC in India will be his last chance and we should be ready to welcome new captain Virender Sehwag. God bless India

Raina and Yuvraj will be fighting the spot for final eleven in the world cup. I think kohli has proved that he is a deserved candidate for the world cup from past one year. From New Zealand and SA series Pathan has booked his berth. Now only one spot i.e for batsman either yuvraj or raina? I feel yuvraj will make it to final eleven for his experience. But cant say till the world cup begins. I would like to trash dhoni if pathan is left out like he did for first one day in SA. Dhoni should put more effort into his batting. Batting: tendulkar, Sehwag, Gambir, Kohli, yuvaraj, Dhoni, Pathan Bowling: Munaf, Zaheer, Praveen and Harbhajan singh

Right on Saira Butt! cricinfo & it's staff are all biased Indians & cannot be taken seriously. ICC is also very negatively influenced by these d@mn indians, hence Umpires as well. Hands down SA, was far better team throughout this series except for the 2nd ODI. Make a note Indian fans, the indian pathetic below par, semi-fast bowling didn't take the 2nd ODI away, SA batters just gave it away on a platter. There's huge difference b/w take away & give away!!

  • nofx on January 23, 2011, 18:11 GMT

Hi everyone, after reading all your comments... i am surprised, did everyone watch the ODI series..? Most of them commented that yuvraj and raina did not perform.. In the 2nd odi Yuvraj played a crucial knock of 53 and he also has 5 wkts in this series, Raina played a key role in a patnership with Yusuf which helped india to chase down the target in the 3rd odi.As the world cup is played in india, India are still the favourites. Steyn and morkel can bowl well only if they get bounce in pitch, while zaheer and harbajan can bowl well in any dead pitches. India where 3 main batsmen short but even then SA struggled at Home. I think Dhoni handles pressure very well compared to any other captain in the world, dont forget his 90 in the 1 st test v/s S.A, He still averages nearly 50 in odis...And he is the best man to lead because he is calml and relaxed in pressure situations. India is still No.1 contender for the World cup. Lets hope they win the WC this time.. All the best INDIA...

i always seem to pick the wrong players as future prospects...

rohit sharma and ishant sharma had seemed like the next big things when they had hit the scene......and they have been huge disappointments.... very, very frustrating disappointments

virat kohli and yusuf pathan had never inspired much confidence in me when they first came in.....i had thought they'ld find the going tough against the quicks....

    but it's completely the opposite......

it happened earlier as well with yuvraj and dhoni...yuvraj looked like the more talented bat but dhoni went on to become skipper and with good reason too..

Oh comments from the pakistan fans are an eyesore. Was an intresting series though.

  • NP_NY on January 23, 2011, 18:06 GMT

Great series and congrats to SA. I think today's key turning points were Taufel's decision to not judge Duminy lbw when he was plumb in front and the dropped catch by Ashwin. But these things happen as India also got lucky when Botha was adjudged LBW in the second ODI when the ball had clearly hit the bat. I am proud of India's performance without four of their first choice players (Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir and Praveen) whereas SA was full strength except Kallis. I think India came away with a lot of certainities from the series which is great - Kohli and Pathan (bye bye Jadeja) have cemented their places and Yuvraj showed he can bowl 10 overs. I like the never-say-die attitude especialy from Pathan but also the bowlers in the second ODI.

  • Deenesh on January 23, 2011, 18:06 GMT

India should've won but thier batting was extremely dissapointing. But if India deserved to win this game, then SA deserved to win this series. Without the 3 batsmen who went home, SA are a better side in these conditions. In the end the better team won. In the subcontinent, India will be much better given their players are all fit. Still, I back SA to reach the finals. :D

  • on January 23, 2011, 18:05 GMT

CAPTAIN DHONI - Look at what Smith commented at last in the presentation stage, he thinks he can win very well in Indian conditions. Undoubtedly this Indian team will have a feeling as though they had rotten eggs & tomatoes on their face if they only lose anywhere before finals of the world cup. With all the crores of money being earned & spent on this sport in India, guys be dignified however you play.

  • Guruprasad.S on January 23, 2011, 18:02 GMT

Congrats to SA for making a comeback in the series and win it 3-2. It is never easy coming back from two heart-breaking losses. But SA should be concerned that even at home, they huffed and puffed to beat an Indian team which was missing four first-choice players. For India, the positives are the batting of Kohli, Yusuf and the spirit of Bhajji. But Rohit, Raina, Yuvraj and Dhoni did not perform when it mattered. These four lack proper technique to play good quality fast bowling as well as spin bowling. They will do well in subcontinent, but will struggle elsewhere. Pathetic shot selection and zero sense by Raina and Yuvraj. Kohli should start ahead of Raina in WC 2011. For SA, the concern in WC 2011 will be the form of their middle order batsmen. Also, Steyn, Morkel and Tsotsobe will be much less effective on those pitches, where batsmen will hit through the line of front foot. Also, SA spinners are unlikely to trouble anyone, much less the Indian batsmen in India.

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:59 GMT

@the_predator: Well, the series was tied 1-1 in tests. But you say SA was not the better team. So by your logic, Aus were clearly the better team when they won the test series 2-1 in 2008? Just be impartial mate. If India lose, then it all comes down to umpiring decisions. When the same decisions go against their opponents, well, "fortune favors the brave", isnt it? The end result does not reflect who the better team is. Fact of the matter is SA should have won the test series 2-0 or even 3-0 had it not been for ridiculous umpiring decisions. If the UDRS was used , thats what the result should have been.

  • Prats6 on January 23, 2011, 17:59 GMT

Goodness me Yusuf was absolutely incredible ! SA are the deserving winners.Indian batsmen have failed hopelessly to really really bad shots in the whole series. But lets not all despair, the WC is in India and with Sachin & Gambhir back, this Indian team will be good,.

But again, Yusuf's innings was a slap on the face of all the selectors who played 3rd rate players like Jadeja ahead of him. Well done bro !

  • nicetunes on January 23, 2011, 17:57 GMT

Is Yousuf not included in playing 11 in first 2 one days due to the fact that, Raina, Vijay, Dhoni can hit the short balls better than Yosuf? A valid reason indeed...

  • faisalmdvm on January 23, 2011, 17:52 GMT

Yousuf Pathan has adapted so well and has always performed well when he got atleast 10 overs. What he lacks is good backing from our mr cool captain dhoni. For some reason he has not earned the confidence of Dhoni were as guyz like Raina, rohit, jadeja., murali vijay got way too many opportunities than they actually deserved. Atleast today he should have been sent ahead of yuvaraj. When the big three returns I don't see Yusuf in the playing 11 were as raina might still play.

  • a1234s on January 23, 2011, 17:52 GMT

Shame on the indian people commenting on how lucky SA were on this tour, and how India should have won, and all the pathetic excuses about being bias. As a south african I am dissappointed that the groundsmen made the tracks as sporting as they did. If anything I think we were too kind to India by producing tracks that turned at all. I believe that the reason for producing tracks that allowed turn was to see how SA could handle the indian spinners, and they didn't do too badly. Any real cricket fan would appreciate that this was a brilliant series in all formats. Over all a brilliant test of the make up of both teams, and revealed where each team needs to brush up before the world cup. What I would say is that SA is going into the world cup with no major expectations, we have a lot of weaknesses. India on the other hand also have a lot of faults, however they have huge expectations and pressure on their shoulders, and by the sounds of these comments, you need to find a decent captain

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:47 GMT

@test_cricket_best_cricket: because SA did not know at the start they had only 46 overs to bat. They played as if they had full 50 overs. Obviously it is assumed that if they were aware , they would have taken a much more positive approach and would have gone full throttle because they had 7 wickets in hand prior to rain break.India _knew_ they had 46 overs, so obviously, their approach would have bene different.

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:47 GMT

Well we just witnessed a speechless ininngs from YUSUF, really amazaing to watch, Today before the match started I read few comments from our friends sayin YUSUF should be dropped as he doest performs conisistently. My answer to them is no player in our team is consistent. We donot have players who show intent to stay on the crease, all the players in this series were more or less playin with the same mode. We need players like Dravid, Laxman who can hold on end and others can score around them.Nevertheless Lets hope and pray YUSUF plays for long withe same form..

  • Cruizin on January 23, 2011, 17:45 GMT

  • Gupta.Ankur on January 23, 2011, 17:44 GMT

This series once again proves that Dhoni, yuvraj,Sehwag and the younger brigade are only good in the sub-continent.

Sehwag was billed as" the" batsman for test-series.................after his brilliant in the why didn't he score in the tests?

You don't want likes of Dravid,Laxman in ODI's because they are slow in the field and not attacking batsman like yuvraj,dhoni.............but the fact is you will hit sixes only if you can stay at the wicket.....

India's future looks far as batting overseas go.

  • AbAdvani on January 23, 2011, 17:43 GMT

Disappointed with Dhoni's captaincy -probably think he was thinking more about testing fringe players before world cup and not winning the series -chawla for nehra did not make much sense (it implies dhoni has more faith in chawla than ashwin and ashwin seems to be in only because the chief of selectors was keen to get atleast one player from his state -his drop of Hashim Amla shows that he is pretty much a one dimensonal player from whom you cannot expect much in batting or fielding and hence does not fit in Dhoni's scheme of having utility all rounders) -second when none of your batsmen are in form, it doesn't make sense to chase, third -SA are chokers and a reasonable totat by Indian in the first innings and a couple of early wickets of SA would have choked them under pressure -Dhoni's luck had to come to an end -SA deserved to be the winners -I hope the indian middle order learn to value their wickets just as Sachin/Dravid/Gambhir have all along done in their career -

Razzaq did not have much partner too at the other end. Unfortunately yousuf could not finish like Razzaq but what a great inning from him. I m sure Smith would have remember that Razzaq's inning too. Posted by Test_Cricket_Best_Cricket on (January 23 2011, 16:48 PM GMT) I am dumb founded by the duckworth-lewis again... how come 250 for 9 becomes 268 in the same 46 overs !!! i hav learnt all these years that keeping wickets in hand increases the final score in d/l.. But SA lost 9 out of 10 and still can manage to get 18 extra(precious) runs...

It is unfortunate that the DL rule is misunderstood after so many years...I would not blame the followers as much as the ICC for not trying to communicate this to the fans. What matter is the resources in hand (wickets in hand) at the time of the rain interruption, not at the end of the inning. During the SA inning, SA was 226/3 during the rain interruption. So, they actually had 7 wickets in hand, not 1. This is the reason why 18 extra runs were added. Hope this clarification helps.

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:37 GMT

Absolutely a dreadful show by Indian team. No chance to even make it to the knock round in WC Need to replace Yuvraj,Dhoni and and perhaps Raina. We should bring in Laxman at least to stem the flow of wickets. Yuvraj and Dhoni are two of the most useless memebrs of the team.

Dont know why but i feel very confident with Indian team as we hav done this much with a full strength SA in their home with our top order resting, If we get the full strength back with our Sehwag,Gambhir,Sachin,Kohli,Yuvi,Raina,Yusuf,Dhoni, Harbajan,Zaheer,Nehra r Patel a devastating team with even part time bowlers at their best can hav much better show in home conditions, as the others who didnt perform well in SA r better in home conditions...

  • SamRoy on January 23, 2011, 17:33 GMT

@Paramjit Das You have got blurred knowledge of cricketing laws mate. The LAW states that if a batsman makes no attempt to play a ball (e.g. hiding his bat behind his pad) and the ball has some chance of hitting the stumps (if it hadn't pitched outside leg stump) he should be given out. De Villiers in the 2nd innings of Durban test hid his bat behind his pad (no attempt to play a shot). The ball pitched on middle and straightened (was certainly going in line of the stumps). We cannot conclusively tell whether the ball would have gone over the stumps or hit the stumps as AB met the ball almost 3.5 metres in front of the stumps(it might have dipped and hit the bail). Hawkeye is flawed for cricket (unlike tennis where it reproduces the image) it is impossible to gauge a ball's trajectory; it's different for different pitches and for Durban which had uneven bounce no one can tell for sure. So in this case benefit of doubt goes to bowler, i.e. Harbhajan. I agree Boucher's was a howler.

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:32 GMT

Very good fight back by INDIAN TEAM on the whole YA They won the series but with out sportsman spirit......................In their home pitches and home crowd gain the benefit In this couple of bad decision and bad bowling too .we should appreciate good work by Pathan and khan at least they try hard to get one good partnership but very poor performance by others.Dhoni is good captain but they also should hold the same responsibility as the other good player. Any way good luck for world cup

  • SachinIsTheGreatest on January 23, 2011, 17:31 GMT

It is surprising how the likes of Yuvraj and Raina are not able to keep their nerve. In the third and fourth games, with a partnership flourishing Raina tried one hoick too many and got out. Today he hit a boundary and tried another mindless swat. Yuvraj lost it nerve in the fourth game when Botha spun a couple past his bat while today he panicked after 5 dot balls(against Steyn - no harm really in surviving an over of Steyn). One might feel they have enough experience at the highest level now to be able to play out the tough phases especially in ODIs.

However, as a fan of the game this has been a great series. The fear of having to sit through a long, arduous, and one-sides series was very much there after the first test but the way India has come back from every tough situation has been thrilling to watch and has given us some wonderful batting, bowling and catching.

  • Harry0009 on January 23, 2011, 17:30 GMT

Well played series but with such poor form hitting this Indian team, I won't give them a chance this WC. The entire middle order barring few innings is in apathy. They lost the plot in both the games especially when it came to batting. Overall disappointed with the Indian performance but well done SA.

Yogesh Sawant, add SEHWAG(he's also a useful offspinner- not used by DHONI politics?!?) to the GAMBHIR,SACHIN,KOHLI,YUSUF,HARBHAJAN,ZAHEER and remove DHONI, this captain simply comes in for a pitch inspection during the 50 overs. GOD knows how the Chennai Super Kings retained Dhoni. As someone commented before, just one more top-order batsmen had to just go through his regular responsibilities to with this match & sereis, look who took us to a respectable finish in the last three matches!!!!!!!!!!

  • PROTEAFAN on January 23, 2011, 17:25 GMT

van Wyk, Amla, Smith, Kallis, Duminy, de Villiers, Peterson, Botha, Morkel, Steyn, Tstsobe. This is my team to win the World Cup, based on what we saw in this series. van Wyk is a regular opener, and with Smith's form, a stint at 3 would do him good. de Villiers provides more power hitting down the order, something we lack without a player like Albie Morkel in the side. Death bowling is a worry, or rather, wicket-taking with the old ball. I am hoping that Kallis will be at his best with the ball, since conditions won't be as helpful as those we just saw and his ability to swing the ball will be useful. I don't believe we need two spinners (SA has done well in the sub-continent with good seam attacks in the past, why change now?), though in Peterson and Duminy we have two good lieutenants to Botha. Smith will hopefully wake up and use Duminy more in situations when seam doesn't do the trick.

This is the time for dhoni to wake up and come down to earth. He better concentrate in playing his game rather than team planning. Its enough for an indian cricket fan. We dont need television commerical stars, we need dedicated players who give everything for the country. Take off that stupid rohit sharma, never NEVER include him in the team..

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:23 GMT

well the series is over finally.india lost the series becaouse of some stupidity shown by the top order specially by rohit, msd, yuvi and raina.i dont know what they were trying to do?sending rohit as an opner was the worst decision, virat should have been given the chance.and it would have been great if yusuf sent at 6 instea of raina.but all is useless now. looking at the world cup we can hope that all our batsmen would be able to score runs on subcontinent tracks and bowlers would be able to perform the way they did in this series because ultimatly we lost because of batting not bowling.dhoni and yuvi need to shine if india has to do well.and yusuf will have to play such knocks on regular basis so that he can proove that his attempts till now wasnt just a magic of few innings. my world cup xi would be sachin,sehwag,gambhir,virat,yuvi(allrounder),yusuf(allrounder),dhoni(wk/cap) bhajji,jaheer,praveen,nehra/munaf raina & ashwin will have to wait now, while piyush is a wastage of a player.

  • cricketlover80 on January 23, 2011, 17:23 GMT

What an innings by Yusuf. He was the lonely warrior in the final ODI. If he would have just stayed in the crease for another 5 overs, we would have witnessed a miracle. Yusuf and Kohli were great in this tournament and the players to watch out in the world cup. Given the fact that Sehwag, Tendulkar and Gambhir will be returning to the squad it will be hard for Yusuf and Kohli to be in the playing 11 because of Dhoni. Dhoni prefers Raina and Yuvraj and i have seen him appreciating them in the post match presentation whenever they perform but i dont see him appreciating Yusuf or Kohli whenever they perform. Just when Ravi Shastri asks about their performance he replies or else he never talks about it. I hope Dhoni chooses his squad for the WC matches based on performance more than experience to win the world cup.

  • CCC-Man on January 23, 2011, 17:22 GMT

Yusuf Pathan should come to bat at around 15-20th over when spinners would start operating. He came at today match & the Nz's bangalore match at 12th / 20 th and results are now part of history. Yusuf coming to bat in 35th to 45 th over is waste of resources.

  • Saffalicious on January 23, 2011, 17:21 GMT

I find it sad that the Indian supporters lambaste their team so. This squad came much closer than any of their predecessors. Give them credit for making it a very competitive series. You must understand that a par score is not the same as on the subcontinent where top order averages have the benefit of flat tracks. South african conditions mean that a batsman that averages mid 40's, is a leading batsman. India have done very well and I commend them on more fighting spirit and guts than I have ever seen from an Indian team. Keep this up and your side will be true world dominators. good luck to both sides in the World Cup, and I hope India come second to the Proteas. A fina with these 2 teams would be the ideal finale.

Team India, is Not Diserve to win ODI series against Proteas.Middle order of India is pathetic, always tumbled throught the series against Quality Seamer like Steyn,Morkel & Tsotsobe. I suggest dhoni to take currier as Modeling & do commercial adds.!,instead of leading the Team India as skipper. Its horrible to see his current form. And Yuvraj shown character like he is a left arm spinner who can bat a little bit..!. Raina is big chokker ,when side needs him most to build partnership,he just walk away as he can not handle the pressure. India is NOT FAVOURITE to win WC-11 B'coz of 2 reasons.. 1) India has to win 3 knockout games against top teams in WC-11 but looking at their frontline paceless seamers & their middle order collapsing batsmen its Impossible. 2) Team India is playing as a host in WC,So enormous pressure will be there to perform well. SA are most strongest side to win Wc-11, They are NO more Chokers,as they won here last final desiding match against India convinsingly.

    (1) We dont need captains who are just decision makers. Horrible Dhoni !! (2) Yuvi has never cared to win for India. All he wants to do was, play for India..Ensure that he gets a seat (3) Rohit Sharma - This guys knows to play only IPL..And esp in matches again CSK (4) Sehwag and Gambhir - Missed Veterans (5) Sachin - Good ..He left half way. Else he would have made one more hundred, but not have played for a win. (6) We Guys - Wasted and wasting time abt these fellows. Not sure if we can continue to bet on this bunch

Dhoni = A Stupid Lucky Gambler, Over Rated by Indian Media Rohit Sharma = Should be "NoHit" Sharma and a wasted talent, due to IPL. Raina = A Lil dude who thinks, playing for chennai Superkings means everything. Yuvraj = Fatboy Going wild for parties!

Yusuf Pathan, Zaheer Khan & Bhajji = True Indians, Plays for India. You guys Rock! We are proud of you.

Dhoni please where the heck "Halicopter Shot" Gone man? WHere?

Well sad , India lost; but see this is what I meant - when they are winning every single Indian is jumping up and down with joy, but the moment they lose - well all the swords are out!!! Come on this is sports, wakey wakey! Anyway from here it seems too early to predict the finals or winners of WC! But maybe it will be Pakistan after all!! Anyway bye bye, have a good day or ?night!!

  • justk on January 23, 2011, 17:15 GMT

infact, sa was trying to save this one day series instead of fielding or experimenting the team..this is interesting. and they did not even test their bowlers by making a surface which would suite the indian least, we have some bench strength with the likes of yusuf, and can drop yuvi or dhoni also if required...

  • sonjjay on January 23, 2011, 17:12 GMT

@ Donovan Bolton Thank you for your comments and congratulations to south africa for the series. It was an exciting tour on the whole. Now from India's point of view we seriously need to worry about yuvraj, dhoni and raina's batting. Had they been able to to preserve wickets at crucial points and build partnerships it could have been better. Anyway looking forward to the ODI worldcup should be good.

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:09 GMT

Given the Indian team & captain's current state, this team does not even deserve to cross the first round of world cup. Too much is being hyped about the talent in this team. It is as useless as anything if the talent does not overcome its weakness & performs consistently. As an example in a private office, one cannot say it is a bad month in my employment tenure, it will get right next month, we'll be kicked-out with a termination letter in hand. This team simply does not understand its responsibilities. While a victory is not expected always, defeats should at least be graceful and there should be some dignity left after a defeat. GOD when will these guys become responsible?

  • Devd007 on January 23, 2011, 17:09 GMT

Shouldn't we have NEUTRAL Third umpires as well. What is ICC stand on this. The issue becomes even more importatnt when UDRS is brought into the game.

  • Sreelal_SS on January 23, 2011, 17:08 GMT

It is high time tat our middle order becomes solid particularly Dhoni....!!.. Hope the return of Sehwag,SRT n Gambhir ll strengthen the team in WC. .

  • CCC-Man on January 23, 2011, 17:07 GMT

Cricket is a team sport, it is the result that all it matters! mostly everyone is trying to foucs the traditional areas, ie specialized batting and bowling. Change the focus to other area and u will find why India lost only by 3-2, bearing Kohli all their specialist batsman failed. Just because their tail batting was much better than SA's and their specialist batsman turned bowlers where much better than SAs. If a team wins its ranking would automaticaly get better. Why worry Steyn best bowler, Sachin best batter or Umpire errors, it has been part and parcel of game, even with TV referral today Parthiv got out to a grounded catch. Dont be stupid to say because of it India lost. SA got psychological advantage when they bowled terrificlly and Pathan got the advantage back to him by hoisting some sixes.

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:06 GMT

@Test_Cricket_Best_Cricket. Well, South Africa would have won even without the d/l.

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:05 GMT

Harbhajan Singh is the biggest worry for India, in 5 matches he has picked only 4 wickets. His eco is also more than 4.5, Yuvi was better than him. In the middle overs when teams try to consolidate after a start, it is the responsibility of the leading spinner to pick wickets, the wickets did help a bit for spin but Harbhajan is not picking the wickets putting the onus on the pace bowlers and the part time spinners. In Indian conditions it will become more tough for the team if he doesn't pick wickets. I don't remember when it was, he won ODI games with his bowling. Piyush is another one who doesn't pick wickets. Ashwin was shaping well but the team managment is not grooming him. The 4th match was a good example of how India can fritter away winning situations when SA tailenders used the middle overs to put a fighting target which help them to comeback in the series.

  • justk on January 23, 2011, 17:05 GMT

and also, yusuf pathan..boy he has improved his wonder..ok against moving ball,. even the best batsman struggle..but still, he can handle the short pitch stuff..

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:05 GMT

Excellent performance by yusuf....One point when zaheer was out and later found it was NO ball..then he playes very sensibly..really good cricket from Zaheer as well...Parthiv really appriciated...WE MISS U SEHWAG ..

  • shankyyy on January 23, 2011, 17:03 GMT

parthiv the most underrated.. i hve seen him facing akthar so comfortably in test cricket tat too opening the innings.. if he had made his debut bit later(after gettin bit more experience under his belt), he wud hve been our permenant opener in all the formats and wud b our first choice wicketkeeper too.. prematurish debut has spoiled him.. it happens so often in asia, mainly in pak.. lots of players imran nazir umar akmal irfan pathan ishant sharma.. theyy come as the future stars.. and fadin away so quickly.. i think v r not allowin them to b a finished product before givin them debut

  • justk on January 23, 2011, 17:02 GMT

nothing to worry even if india did not win the one day series..test cricket is important..and also, 33.33% of this team was composed to substitutions..parthiv patel, murali vijay, rohit or nohit sharma, ashish nehra, all were replacing the main players..praveen kumar was missed was gambhir, sehwag,,cannot trust him in one dayers..and the little master, who has a very good record in centurion...remember his blasting of shoaib akhtar in 2003 world cup at the same venue..though yuvraj, dhoni needs to hit form..kohli did a tremendous job, i guess raina, rohit sharma must be shown the exit route they have benefitted a lot from the generosity just on the name of youngster..and really, RSA is not a gr8 team..there bowlers can only bowl in african conditions..

  • on January 23, 2011, 17:01 GMT

Well done boys!!! series well deserved boooom

  • gooey_kablooie on January 23, 2011, 16:59 GMT

Lots of ifs and buts. Loads of them by everyone... If this if that etc. etc. Duminy was out LBW today to and seeing the trend SA would have collapsed and wouldn't have reached that score. Same applies in the previous one-day when Botha and Duminy were lucky. And in the third test Kallis was lucky twice (A player like Kallis being lucky is doom). And it should be made clear that India were without their top three (Sehwag, Sachin and Gambhir please match that) and most of their batting woes is because of the lack of the starts. If both teams had played full strength teams the result would have been entirely different (I am not going to state any results else I will be virtually murdered). So everyone stop ifing and buting and relish an extremely well played series. Its hard to predict a WC winner now if all teams rectify their mistakes before coming to the sub-continent. I for now would say - Watch out for the dark horse(s).

  • LazloWoodbine on January 23, 2011, 16:59 GMT

What a great tour! Rivetting to the very end, and even though we won the ODI series 3-2, overall I think SA have been left with more to think about than India. There were umpiring errors, of course, but every cricket match ever played has those. If India opted for the UDRS it'd be ironed out. That aside, it was a privilege to see such fight and talent from the Indian side, and we wish you all the best at the WC. For us SAns, I think we can look to Steyn, Morkel and Tsotsobe as having gelled really nicely, but our batsmen and the ol' mental attidude (we have the opposition at 98/7 and we take our foot off the gas???) need a kick in the pants. I was at the game today and can tell you that Pathan's innings won the country over and symbolised more than anything the steel that India have injected into their side. Now, SA need to get "Gazza" back so that he can do the same for us!

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:59 GMT

Right said, Indian tema should have new cap instead of Dhoni...I would agree with Gambhir, he is good with bat also when he captain india...not many matched though he has in his pocket...but far far better than Dhoni...I wont complaint Piyush as he is playing after more than two years in an ODI. And on a pitch where seemers makes fortune though our bowlers didnt.(Final over colapse of SA) is not into Indian Credit.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:59 GMT

It is another big shame that not a single other batsmen(including Sehwag) in this Indian team never stood out even 1/2 foot outside the crease to negate Morkel's bounce. Rohit should, by now, be clearly convinced why he's been left out of the world cup squad. Guys, if you were humbled in South Africa, you're in for an even bigger shock from them, this time at your own backyard(spin & Indian pitches) during the world cup. Gather yourself now and get your act right or you'd never even have an opportunity to rethink later during the world cup. I, like most other who would agree with me, feel that you guys are complacent at the moment without any remorse.

  • J.Mohan on January 23, 2011, 16:58 GMT

parthiv patel was wrongly given out by III umpire as the ball appears to have hit the ground after the fielder took the catch ; This is the turning point of the match and India has to lodge a protest; III umpire should not have given parthiv patel out as replay shows clearly the ball is touching the ground .

Apart from this, yuvraj singh plays casually and carelessly and we all wonder how a 200 odd one day played batsman can hit the ball straight into the hands of the fieldsman without finding the gap.

Dhoni can pushing himself down the order to number 7

We should not include any bowlers who are very weak in batting as the present and future scenario demands bowling allrounders as on many occasions nowadays the final 30 odd runs have to be scored by the tail enders

  • bhaloniaz on January 23, 2011, 16:57 GMT

I cannot deny batting talents india have,I still have to agree with Saira. I grew up supporting India. With india's new found money power, India has become the first sign of unfairness in cricket. Cricket is still a fair sports[compared to other sports]. Cricket was the ultimate sports of fairness and gentleman-ship. England got three worldcup played in their land and did not win one. A weak Indian team beat the mighty WI team in 1983 world cup. India's continual denial of using referral system is outrageous and all the other teams should speak up. We should maintain a statistics of wrong decisions to find out whether Indian team is benefited from the wrong decisions from the umpires.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:54 GMT

When was the last time CAPTAIN DHONI played . For world cup only players whom we can have hopes are GAMBHIR,SACHIN,KOHLI,YUSUF,HARBHAJAN,ZAHEER DHONI - useless as his dedicated job is only leadership remaining everything is supposed to be done my team members YUVRAJ - useless RAINA - lottery

  • grcricket on January 23, 2011, 16:54 GMT

Just needed one other batsman to perform. Top order went for stupid shots when you need to keep wickets until we reached atleast 200 runs. Parthive was unlucky given out the ball was clearly picked after it was dropped from the first attempt. Third umpire can't make these mistakes. the south african commentators are biased and looked like they influenced the decision of the third umpire.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:50 GMT

SHAME on you young brigade. You salvaged the test sereis because of the presence of veterens and come a cropper with all young legs in one-dayers. The old had it in them to bring us as close as 2003 world-cup finals, let us see how much is there in you & how far you'd go. This young Indian team never deserved to win this sereis as they have never been convincing, barring the performances of Pathan & Kholi. CAPTAIN DHONI, no point in appearing in ads demonstrating the helicopter shot, you must score runs for once and prove - if you're really worthy enough.

  • Test_Cricket_Best_Cricket on January 23, 2011, 16:48 GMT

I am dumb founded by the duckworth-lewis again... how come 250 for 9 becomes 268 in the same 46 overs !!! i hav learnt all these years that keeping wickets in hand increases the final score in d/l.. But SA lost 9 out of 10 and still can manage to get 18 extra(precious) runs...

  • shrastogi on January 23, 2011, 16:46 GMT

Its ironic that series of 9 matches is 3-3-3. May be for India to win one dayers they should have lost t20 :-). Well tried Yusuf this one was just too stiff but still if you keep working on your shot selection and keep your head you would go a long way. crciinfo please explain D/L. Suppose a team plays 11 batters 5 of whom are good part time bowlers and lose 8 wickets while chasing is their resources same as any team losing 8 wickets with two tailenders left? Shouldnt all 22 players in a match should be variables which I think they arent at present? ICC should give them weights based on their stats and match ref can update the software before start of game. Wouldnt that be more realistic. Some thought isnt it :-).

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:46 GMT

Highly disappointing as a hardcore Indian fan. But SA deserved to win the series. Poor and senseless batting led to the failures. Esp dhoni and raini are in very poor form. Given this state of form i doubt India's chances in the world cup. Heartbroken. Only positive was the batting of yusuf bhai. hats off !!

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:46 GMT

Its only Yusuf who played cricket from Indian batting side

  • bhaloniaz on January 23, 2011, 16:46 GMT

Yousuf is a decent bowler and he is really great as a ODI batsman. India should play Yousuf at #5 and Irfan at #7.Having two all rounders would give them so much flexibilities. Watson and MJ give aussies that edge. Too bad SA did not select Albie [they hv Kallis]. When Oram and Vettori plays together NZ looks decent. In 1983 World cup India had Kapil. Bini, Madanlal did have their moments with bat.Amarnath did ok as a bowler. If you have bowlers like Marshall,Garner, Croft and Holding, you donot need allrounders, because those 4 bowlers create enough havocs that batsmen would be happy survive Viv Richard's spin. All rounders these days are different. Kallis, Watson, Yousuf, Bravo could survive as a batsman. Sakib, Vettori, MJ can get in as a bowler. Irfan was selected only for his bowling. They are not bits and pieces cricketer. May be all of them are not as great as Imran, bt still adding an Oram, an Irfan, a Pollard adds flexibility and firepower.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:46 GMT

Haha, seeing here lots of Anti-indian team comments, proving SA on top. Bloody hell, it seems you never ever can make (commentators) satisfy. They want India to go out of the cricket world, not imagining if India is the only team can keep alive the game of cricket and I can't really understand why they are more hatred or worried about Indian performance. We Indian never criticize Pak team or any team, because we know our team is much more capable of ruling over any team in the world, they are not paper champion like others, they have shown that SA can only win the match (1st test, admitted by Smith himself) by winning toss and after being half strength, we won 2 ODIs and in this final decider too, if Yusuf (humara muslim bhai) would have stayed for another 4 or 5 overs, it was all finish for SA, but we dont have any regret, we love our indian team and one simple sentence for you all "Mar gaye mitane wale". Go India Go.

wrong decession by dhoni to choose field first....but not worries.....india will rock in WORLD CUP

  • Cpt.Meanster on January 23, 2011, 16:44 GMT

@Saira Butt: Saira, please speak with some common sense. You are either a die hard fan of the South Africans or you must be incredibly cross with the Indian teams. The fact remains that India have given the South Africans a run for their money. India are easily a very good team nowadays touring overseas. India have genuine match winners whereas South Africans rely too much on wickets that assist bounce. The South Africans indeed HAVE to be concerned more so than India simply because their record in the sub-continent has been poor. Their fast bowlers Steyn, Morkel and Tsotsobe will be ineffective in India. South Africa can only dream about winning the world cup. Sure their batsmen might play decently enough but in those slow and low surfaces, they will be tested. India on the other hand have nothing to fear. In fact they are firm favorites to lift the trophy followed by Sri Lanka. India are easily the BEST Asian side in world cricket so they deserve every appreciation. Cheers.

as for bowlers Praveen should come back in side ,so who would then be the fifth bowler --Munaf,Nehra,Chawla,Ashwin ? .

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:31 GMT

Yusuf''s efforts went vain but his innings cannot be forgotten for sometime, such an awesome innings but our frontliners would have contributed equally it was our game but why and what happened to our world class batsmen? are they not wary of world cup approaches fast and to be performed well? why don't they realize this at this level where the count down started. If our beloved Dhoni doesn't contribute significantly in batting we can't always rely on Yusuf and other tail enders. of course Yusuf will be there always for our rescue since he groomed himself as a world class batsman and play according to the situation with cricketing knocks not like other pinch hitters so he is 100% reliable along with his efforts our batsmen concentrate more then only India can have confident to bring back the memories of Kapildev's 1983 triumph.

Raina should go back and practice for next one year even before he should be considered for the national team. Dhoni and Raina are huge concerns. Rohit is not in the team for right reasons. If dhoni and raina and yuvraj continue playing like this, we have no chance at all in the world cup. Absolutely useless fellows! Cant praise pathan enough, same about zaheer. The support he provided was really amazing. Virat is definitely here for some time. Dhoni, be scared of Virat. Dhoni should try to better his performance and lead from the front rather than taking the credit for his "cool " for the victory the other boys gain for India.

  • the_predator on January 23, 2011, 16:30 GMT

@paramjit. on third test sachin was not out. The ball dropped short offboucher. Also go and tell your favorite SA barsmen to use bat and not pad to play the ball. If you do not offer shot, you are going to given out even if it is 50-50.

  • J.Mohan on January 23, 2011, 16:30 GMT

india has to be very serious about middle order which is failing once again; As Srikanth justifies the non inclusion of rohit sharma for the world cup , there is no justification around the selection of yuvraj singh; As he is taking couple of wickets regularly , he has to be considered as a full time bowler for the world cup; Also he can score some 10-15 important runs (this move will be pretty useful when india needs 40 runs in 6 overs with 2 wickets in hand type of situation) if he comes at number 8 or 9.What India needs that all their lower order batsmen have to be allrounders

  • maddy20 on January 23, 2011, 16:29 GMT

@Saira Butt SA did not even come close in the ODI series in India. Every team is bound to perform better in home conditions especially when the opposition is not fielding a full strength team. I can understand your frustration though the cause of which seems to be a 9-wicket loss to a team ranked No.7!

@Saira Butt - Are you day dreaming? how many teams have come to SA and completed the series so closely. See the form of other teams. They have been white washed whenever they played in SA. India has always played better cricket throughout.....

  • Newkid on January 23, 2011, 16:28 GMT

@Saira Butt- India got roasted by SAF in last ODI? Really? Did you not see Yusuf's 100? India got close enough that SAF should have never let them after half of the team threw away their wickets. Stop making fuss about BCCI not wanting to use the referral system. It works out just okay in the end. Both not given out in last game, Duminy not given out today and Parthiv given out today worked out against India just like other decisions favored India. Stop being so jealous of team India. Let them be, win or lose.

@Paramjit Das-Can't believe there are still some idiots who talk about Sachin getting out at 49 in 2nd test when Boucher had picked up the catch after the ball hit the ground. How ignorant can you guys be?

  • ilovecricket1234 on January 23, 2011, 16:27 GMT

If Yusuf Pathan and Irfan Pathan were of a different religion, they would have been national heroes. It's sad how they are held back because of obvious reasons.

  • Eyal on January 23, 2011, 16:27 GMT

No one here should forget that India played without there 1st choice top order ! Tandulkar, Sehwag, Gambir. I want to see SA playing without Smith, Amla in addition to missing kalis. India has done trremendously well under the circumstances. Yes, Dhoni looks tired and out of sort but he will recover and lead India to the world cup. The real disapointments are Yuvraj, raina, who real should have done better to take the responsibility when the seniors are absent. Yusuf should bat up the order no 5. Kohli is better than Raina. Sehwag and Gambir should open. Tandulkar no 3. Kohli no 4 , Yusuf no 5, yuvraj no 6 and Dhoni no 7., Irfan no 8, Bhaji no 9, Zahir no 10 and Pravin no 11. Imagine what a batting order

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:27 GMT

Its very easy to be critical about some performances but wen u dance to the tunes of fast bowlers on foreign pitches... trust me mate its tough... India did well.. they are not the best but they fought well and showed character........ u cant slander just coz they din win 1 match..... decrease ur expectations folks...... Yusuf and amla were standouts along with morkel... super performances :)

First of all, I would congratulate the Indian team for playing fearless and competitive throughout the series. This was the best series for India in SA so far. I've read all the comments throughout the series. One thing I notice is that most of the readers who are not sportive enough. C'mon guys, it's just a game of cricket between two top nations. Embrace the game and don't be bashful towards the cricketers(and to any other sportsmen for that matter). In my opinion, both sides played well and SA were slightly better than India. I'm happy that India lost in this ODI series. Otherwise they would've been too complacent(Before the 2007 WC India won 2 series and then won convincingly in the warm-up match before being thrashed by Ban and SL). We should also realize that this team played pretty ok in the ODI series without Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir and Praveen. So don't discount India in the WC. If the players fight against complacency and be fit and the openers fire, India will lift the cup.

  • AshishNandi on January 23, 2011, 16:25 GMT

Ok, never mind India losing, after all they did put on a good fight with all these young inexperienced players. The worrying thing is that Mr Dhoni seems to have lost the plot, not sure what he thinks of himself, Zhaeer has done a much better job both with ball and bat.

  • VAS4 on January 23, 2011, 16:24 GMT

Totally agree with sen11. Get dhoni, yuvraj and raina out of the team. Totally useless trio. Get parthiv to keep. Pathan at no5 purely because he is in good form. My order of players - Gambhir, Sehwag, sachin, virat, pathan, parthiv, uthappa, harbhajan, zaheer, chawla, Sreesanth. dhoni and yuvraj are big names, but what is the use if their maxximum score is 5 per inning? Raina could go and play some domestic games for next one year and come back. What can one say! Like the t20 world cup, we already lost the world cup on the day of team selection! If dhoni was not the captain, would you as a selector give him another run? I have no idea why no one is talking about his poor poor run! Get dhoni out! let us hope he will get injured and get out of the world cup team!

  • betbes on January 23, 2011, 16:24 GMT

Dhoni should quit from captancy and give to Gautam. Dhoni & Srikanth still playing with politics, this series Dhonis batting and captancy was BIG ZERO.

  • maddy20 on January 23, 2011, 16:23 GMT

Man of the match :Duckworth(less) Lewis method. Team batting first scores 250 for the loss of 9 wickets but team batting second should score 268? I wonder if they would have scored that much in 50 overs with one wicket in hand. What should have been 30 runs in the last 10 overs was 48 instead. Its a shame that contests were being killed by this method. Having said that, Dhoni is to be blamed for choosing to bowl first when there is a chance of rain!

I don't understand why Dhoni is sooo over rated???? He hasn't contributed anything to the national team other than being captain... Parthiv Patel bats better than him. I think its time for people to stop praising him and really look into in his performances...the IPL money has gone into his head and I can't find any new tactics from him to lead the side. People what do you think???????

  • kumarcoolbuddy on January 23, 2011, 16:22 GMT

Congrats!!! Its great news today Dhoni learnt that he needs to have wickets for last 10 overs to win a game. I donno when he learns to play atleast one game when needed. I know captaincy is not easy but I donno what he did in this series. I think he forgot the importance of captain's batting. By the way Congrats to SA for a good comeback from 1-2 to 3-2 series win...Happy to see good fight from both the teams.

Great news guys Dhoni, Raina & Yuvraj has won the series for SA, this happens only in India Indian players playing for other team. Without Sachin, Sehwag & Gauti at the top these 3 are useless, only good this series we had is Kohli & Pathan in batting and Zaheer & Munaf in bowling specially death bowling, sometimes bhajji also. It seemed like these 5 were playing against team of 11. If 5 players can bring series upto 3-2 then if all had played properly then definatily we could have won quite comfortably. Truly undeservable series win for SA. Let see how chokers will perform on Indian subcontinent.

  • Hseehtar on January 23, 2011, 16:15 GMT

Dear Mr. MS DHONI, now we all know why you give rest to Sreesanth and, the reason behind excluding him from WC2011 squad. now you can pray to all gods for the fitness of all Big Small masters... or you have to watch all matches... :) on live or in TV

  • cricdick on January 23, 2011, 16:14 GMT

Hats off to players like Yusuf,Amla,Zaheer,Kwaja from countries lke INDIA,SA.AUS that is in the service of World Cricket. Dhonis is no longer we saw in Pakistan. If Bhajji,Yuvraz, raina, sihwag, sachin & of course Yusuf, cant spin the opposition, then also not chawla. Instead, they can include a specilist batsman.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:13 GMT

Well very encouraging effort from Yusuf but a very disappointing effort from Dhoni, Rphit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh. I don't understand why is Piyush Chawla in the world cup squad. Has Srikanth been bribed to take him in the A player who hasn't played an ODI since more than 2 years suddenly get the call for World cup...that is really funny... And Mr. Dhoni should start concentrating on his Batting rather than talking.... What a waste of talent... Rohit sharma, he is better to serve th dinks on the ground till he finds his form...I cannnot see him batting anymore...

Hope Sachin. Sehwag and Gambhir creates the difference in World cup...Good Luck India!!!!!!

  • VAS4 on January 23, 2011, 16:12 GMT

Rohit sharma proved Srikanth right by his poor performance. I think it is time for dhoni to take a break from international cricket. He is been called the most successful captain, but how many matches has he won with his performace? Can someone remember an innings he played under pressure to rescue the team? When has he contributed to the team with some runs that was really useful for the team? Why is no one talking about dhoni's form? Please if anyone is interested in India's chance in the world cup, get parthiv to keep, and get dhoni out. What is yuvraj and raina doing? Why should they bother such millionaires they are. I have given up on our team now itself. Sorry for the loyal fans!!!!!

  • dinom on January 23, 2011, 16:12 GMT

As a neutral cricket fan, I am quite disappointed with MS Doni captaincy. RG Sharma has failed again and again as opener, and yet he is still the opener for a very important decider. Nevertheless, South Africa deserved to win the series.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:11 GMT

This is the worst captaincy ever by dhoni.Worst batting. If we go on this way we should never think of winning the world cup

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:11 GMT

even if duminy was out earlier, someone would have knuckled down a similar sore for SA. they had plenty of batting to come [with lots of overs remaining before the rain delay. They obviously lost some momentum during that rain break after which they got out courtesy of some frenzied slogging and running b/w wickets]. And the Parthiv decision hardly changed the game anyways. I thought it was a fair catch. Gutsy move by the umpire to give it out. In fact, many umpires over the world would have given it not out, when you could see his two fingers were clearly under the ball. SA won fair and square

  • kumarcoolbuddy on January 23, 2011, 16:11 GMT

@cricandi, though it looks lil bit exaggerated but it is good one. After seeing his batting your mimic statements of Dhoni seems to be correct. Hopeless batting in this series. Hope he understands at somepoint.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:10 GMT

I donot remember when Dhoni played a match winning knock last time. He has been below par in last several series. It is an awakening call for him and need to concentrate. Congrats to Pathan for his fearless performance, I hope that the others will learn some lesson from his attitude. Train hard and good luck for world cup.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:09 GMT

Dear indian fans !! do not be so harsh on your team.. they did well to come so close and to decide the series on the final match. they were just out played by a better team this is simple logic.....

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:08 GMT

Keep Dhoni out of world cup , Give the captaincy to Gambhir , lets play with Viru, Sachin, Gauty,Kohli,Pathan, Yuvraj, Raina, Bhaji,Zaheer, Piyush . Let captain enjoy his honeymoon , the rest can focus on World cup ...

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:04 GMT

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:03 GMT

Ok, I know Im supposed to be happy we won the series, but there is a lot to leave me skeptical. The choking was there for all to see. Today's bowling and fielding was exposed by Yusuf. In fact, in almost all of the 5 games, we failed to kill the game off. There was always that one person who kept India alive, and for some reasons we allowed it to either get too close, or for India to survive. We need to be more worried than the Indian team.

  • on January 23, 2011, 16:03 GMT

@gauravn81: goes some way to counter the howlers Sa got, eh? Boucher,Devilliers, in the 2nd test match [given lbw to ball missing the stumps], sachin not given caught behind on 49 in the 3rd test match, zaheer not given out lbw in 2nd test match , sachin having a couple of other lbw decisions in his favor, botha being given out bat before wicket in the 2nd odi....all in all , Sa still have been on the receiving end of howlers. Like some indian fans said, fortune favors the brave. Is it only when some decisions go against India, that fortune does not favor the brave any more? Once again brilliant performance by SA and I have to agree that 3-2 is a much luckier result for india. It should have been 4-1 in favor of SA

I think P.Patel is a good wk and batsman. Given the situation, Gambhir can captain WC team and I heard he has good captaincy records and plays great when he captains!!! Otherwise, India has poor hopes....

In regards to Sreesanth, though everyone knows he is a big dramatist, but he keeps the opposing team in control as opposed to P.Chawla.

Why are Cricinfo so contradictory towards the India we see on TV, which transpires in the bravado comments given out on the net, as if they have an obligation to make it look as if India are on par with SA, just as this article which starts with 'can someone separate the two teams' . There is a clear difference in the teams, with SA dominating bat, ball and aggression. In the test matches, SA were clearly the better team, maybe they would have thumped India if they (India) agreed to using the Umpire referral systems, rather than crying about the 0.01% unreliability issues, hoping the pressure of big commercial names and the position of BCCI in the ICC is embedded in umpires minds. Now to make night clear from day, India have just been roasted in the last ODI, after SA gifted them two matches. But what do you see? You see the in-match commentators stating India did so well without their main team line-up, crying yet again. Today, if there were any doubts, they are now clear SA on top

  • on January 23, 2011, 15:59 GMT

  • Naveen888 on January 23, 2011, 15:55 GMT

What were India's top order batsmen doing!? No need to such aggressive shots when they were keeping up with the run-rate. Y Pathans fantastic innings covers up the mistakes of India's top order. India's tail seem like they want to win the match more than the batsmen. Still, the real difference between the sides is in Sehwag, Gambhir and Tendulkar. No doubt India would beat SA in the world cup, on the flat Indian wickets, and the return of the full-strength team.

  • on January 23, 2011, 14:19 GMT

Captain's Blunder. Reminds me of 2003 World Cup final when Ganguly handed off winning toss to allow them to bat first. We keep asking for winning toss and then here we go how the decisions are made. This series there are no good batting performances and then the bowling is not on par with SA in some areas. How can they think that we can win batting second and that to the decider. I am not sure if it was the forecast which made them decide but end of the the its a horrible decision.

Looks like the time has come to think of Dhoni's spot in the team at least after the World Cup if he doesn't perform.

  • Sandeep_mv on January 23, 2011, 14:18 GMT

India is totally outplayed by South Africa. Dhoni & Raina are good for nothing in this series. It's clearly shows that Indian batsmen are like lambs infront of South African Fast Bowlers. Very dissapointed with India's batting performance.

  • ArFenom_999 on January 23, 2011, 14:12 GMT

What's the exact formula for D/L method. Last match, the commentators said India were 50 runs behind D/L method (at some stage), at that time India has lost 6 wickets. And even said, had they lost 2 wickets at that stage, India would've been 5 runs ahead and had they lost 4 wickets, they would've been 4 runs behind??? So, I'm getting all this curiosity as to how's the exact formula calculated.

  • anoopsaras on January 23, 2011, 14:05 GMT

Please....Is there a chance for making Dhoni India's non-playing captian?? I have never seen such an irresponsible shot to get out from the captain of a team in such a situation. Dhoni is the most overrated cricketer in Indian cricket history.I cant remember him scoring even a half century in the last year. Why should we have a captain who can't score some runs? Add to it his so called "tactics". During the second one dayer he has given the ball to a part timer Suresh Raina(instead of Munaf who was bowling superbly) in such a tight situation with S A needing only 11 runs to win. That over almost cost India the match. Where is Sreesanth? Is he so bad(He cannot be worse since P Chawla proved today who deserves that tag) that he is not given a chance to play a single game in ODI series?? One humble request to all those who venerates Dhoni...dont feel bad..this team with this captain is going to put up another flop show in the world be prepared for the worst..

  • Saffalicious on January 23, 2011, 14:04 GMT

samavb, I really dont think the extra 18 runs are going to matter to the result of this game. Even 250 is VERY competitive. SA to win by 100 odd. What is more concerning is SA record in the last 10 overs in recent times. We have construed to dismantle the hard work done by the top order by regarding the last 10 overs like a Fawlty Towers episode! Cmon guys, get a grip and have a game plan out there.

If SA win this match, it would be purely because of that PLUMB LBW that Duminy survived first ball..All those SA fans crying foul over bad decisions, wonder what they have to say?? That apart, it is unbelievable how Dhoni keeps letting off pressure match after match , through defensive tactics!

  • GullyBully on January 23, 2011, 12:56 GMT

India can easily strategize to win even given the prospetl of D/L comin up again. For one thing, you know what your target is, what the par score will be, and can pace the innings to stay ahead at all times. Now, given that SA batted first and went about piling up runs unabated, it is perhaps in India's favour that D/L has come into play in SA's innings. The reduction of overs to 46 upset the rhythm of SA batting: as they aspired to pile up runs after the rains, they ended up losing 6 wickets for just 26 runs. Now, the fact that SA lost nine wickets works hugely in India's favour, should D/L come into play again when India bats. (In short, if it rains again, it is good for India that it rained before!!) India will definitely strive to keep scoring briskly and stay ahead of par. (They are idiots if they don't do that). In doing so, India may lose more wickets than if it doesn't rain. Given that, it is better for India that SA has lost nine wickets as opposed to three.

  • maninthewoods on January 23, 2011, 12:56 GMT

Two mistakes in this match report. 1. Last line says "18 overs of powerplay". It should 18 runs in powerplay 2. "Amla faced only 2 balls in last 4 fours" He faced more than that. Anyway it was a good batting display by Amla.

@Yaseen: Jadeja would be extremely happy that he got at least one follower out of a billion Indians..... :D

  • hellraiser9 on January 23, 2011, 12:52 GMT

someone already said SA will make 300+ but look what happened.. they were 250/9 thanks to some idiotic LUCK for smith those valuable 18 runs are added. And in overcast conditions obviously you expect the ball to swing and do a bit in the intial overs so it was thoughtful of dhoni to take bowling first.. they were 226/3 in 42 and look how india came back into the match.. it is SA WHO IS LUCKY..not india.. there is nothing wrong with bowling first on this wicket.. What can dhoni do if bowlers spray the ball over the place? how can you blame dhoni for everything?? it is ridiculous and mindless of some people who just think bashing dhoni is fashion..being indian I will always support our indian team ..the only weakness in dhoni is sticking with R sharma thats it..other than that he is doing absolutely fine.. and batsman ? Top order is simply not performing.. R sharma -disgusting, vijay -same disgusting , raina , yuvi all are supposed to perform they are pure batsman ..blame them ..

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:50 GMT

    what about other 10 players

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:48 GMT

Why should India be chasing 268 in 46 Overs when SA have only scored 250... DWL is not proper..

  • AnshulGarg on January 23, 2011, 12:47 GMT

Why is Your Information So wrong? or are u blindly Praising AMLA.. He played 8 deliveries in those last 4 overs.. please correct ur bulletin

  • rcbdoll on January 23, 2011, 12:47 GMT

India's target 268, unbelievable, it will take a miracle to win this one, WHAT WAS DHONI THINKING, BATTING 2ND AGAINST STEYN

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:47 GMT

Definitely. Rohit sharma must haved been disappointed. But, he will be successful if he is sent in the same batting position consistantly. Don't change his batting order every now and then. Rohit is a telanted player than many members of WC team. Many are saying Rohit has failed. Has only Rohit failed? What about Raina, Yuvi, Dhoni, Vijay, Parthiv etc..? Why Rohit's failure is being highlighted?

  • lazyplayers on January 23, 2011, 12:47 GMT

Mr. Prediction, Ashwin is a very very bad fielder if you have not yet noticed, When u have b hajji u don't need ashwin. in fact he shud not have been in wc xi too. he is there only bcoz either vijay or he has to be there till srikanth is there.

  • jsamuel on January 23, 2011, 12:45 GMT

Chawla didnt play since 2008 but he is in world cup team but Sreesanth not in the team too !!! What a selection by captain Dhoni??

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:42 GMT

    Nice recovery by India !!!

  • Timson on January 23, 2011, 12:36 GMT

Clearly visible the politics back in the team. A crucial match like today's India's best bowler in SA - Sreesanth is left out. I never liked his character, but if we wanted to win he should have played. Why bowl first without proper bowlers. It was Dhoni who was against selecting sree in the WC squad and if he shines today lot of questions will be asked. I even doubt Dhoni lost the 4th ODI purposely to avoid any opportunity for reserve players.

  • thisisashish on January 23, 2011, 12:36 GMT

Choosing 2 seamers only when batting first on an overcast day - seems to be a blunder to exclude Sreesanth (or Nehra when he seemed to be improving).

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:32 GMT

Guys India need 251 to win not 268 as posted in Cricinfo site..

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:31 GMT

I am not able to understand this D/L method, how come we have to make more runs than SA scored, sheer stupidity...

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:27 GMT

By letting our batsmen just throw away 6 wickets thereby helping india's revised target shows us that Smith is a useless captain, not to mention his being the ugliest style of batting. Maybe he should step aside for the WC

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:26 GMT

The D/L method is stupid. They ought to do what ever score-changing before the team starts off again. They do so for the chasing team, then why not do it for the team setting the target. The batsmen just can't suddenly come in after setting up a platform for 40 overs and then be give some 5 odd overs to do what they can and then modify the score with wickets in hand. RIDICULOUS!!!

  • VIKIRAFF on January 23, 2011, 12:11 GMT

If Kholi Stays for 25 overs i think will have a bright chance for victory..

  • on January 23, 2011, 12:03 GMT

what a stupid decision to bowl first in this overcast situation, SA will score 300+; batting second we will succumb to D/L rule.

  • on January 23, 2011, 11:40 GMT

I am certain Dhoni is losing his magical touch. He is a pure gambler and his tactics are purely a chance that he takes. When it works its tactical brilliance, if it doesnt then its the oppositions excellence. This has gone a bit overboard and now there is no place for common sense. Winning the toss and putting the chokers to bat, knowing it would rain and opting spinners in centurion...utter rubbish

  • Kev75 on January 23, 2011, 11:34 GMT

No use complaining about the Duminy decision, South Africa wanted the review system and India declined. And Dhoni choosing to bat first with rain clouds lurking ... please lets not hear the duckworth lewis excuses when the Proteas take the series.

  • faisalmdvm on January 23, 2011, 11:29 GMT

With Dhonis biased decision making and personnel choice over team priority we can only pray and hope that this team wins the world cup for us. Why was y. Pathan given only 2 overs today and underbowled in last match? Why wasnt r aswin given a chance or rather sreesanth ahead of near? Why persist with rohit sharma the same way he persisted with jadeja and murali vijay? These are not just tactical errors but it's the over confidence he has got in himself. Once the captaincy is removed he will have to go back to his old ways in order to find a place in the team. But the irony is that no one at the moment is good enough to lead India probably till gambler show some maturity. And that's dhoni's advantage and our fate.

I cannot under why sreesanth left out for all the ODI Matches against SA despite his name already in Indian ODI squad for the series against SA. I feel its not a wise decision to under estimate him since his effort is 100% always.

  • sunil_just_loves_test_cricket on January 23, 2011, 9:48 GMT

Batsman like Duminy can only score if they are given not out at least 3 times in a span of 50 runs. He was out on first ball plumb Where is Sidharth saying Duminy is the real thing yeah he is plays after getting out 2-3 times in a mtach got to be a real thing!!! Why Mr. Cool once again so wise to take ball first in series decider I dont understand why you want any sort of pressure in crucial match just go bat first whatever will be the result if batting clicks you r on safe side otherwise defend whatever you got simple it is!!!

  • CricketPrediction on January 23, 2011, 9:37 GMT

They should have gone with R Ashwin if they were not happy with Nehra. Hope they dont make similar tactical mistakes in the World Cup. If India is to win R Ashwin an attacking bowler should play who can also bat a bit. Also Virat kohli should play.

  • avani on January 23, 2011, 8:59 GMT

Since R Sharma knows that he is not in WC squad, it seems he had made up his mind not to apply himself in the game. I doubt about his performance today also. Only question is why Dhoni himself is not performing? Where is the captain's knock? Yuvi & Raina not in good nick too. So can we make it today?

Dhoni is biased. Why Chawla in WC squad? That place should have gone to a specialist batsman. To justify his action, he has now carved out a place for Chawla in today's game.It is really irritating that some one not played @ intl level for 2 years getting a place in WC squad and in a decider like this. If Nehra not considered, Ashwin should have been given the chance.
