South Africa 23/1   HM Amla 2* (14b)

11.1

Sharma to Amla, no run, Ishant continues to bowl well outside off. Dhoni earns his salary as a wicketkeeper.

11.2

Sharma to Amla, FOUR, Stylish flick. Juicy full toss on the pads and Amla wrists it to the backward square-leg boundary.

12.6

South Africa 34/1   HM Amla 6* (23b 1x4)

14.1

Khan to Amla, no run, Zaheer starts from round the stumps. This is a really full delivery outside off, Amla tries to dig it out but the ball rushes through to Dhoni

14.2

Khan to Amla, FOUR, edged past the stumps! That angle is causing some problems for Amla. This one came in from round the stumps angle and Amla stabbed outside the line. The ball flew of the edge to fine-leg boundary

14.3

Khan to Amla, no run, Fine delivery. This one lands on a good length outside off and moves away. Amla was ready though and allowed it to pass through without any drama

14.4

Khan to Amla, no run, fuller, on the off and middle line, eased to mid-on

14.5

Khan to Amla, 2 runs, More trouble for Amla, this time from over the stumps. It was on a full length on the middle and leg and Amla tried to flick it to the on side. Mistake. He got a leading edge and popped up wide of cover fielder.

14.6

Khan to Amla, 1 run, lands on the middle and leg stump line and straightens a touch, Amla tucks it behind square-leg

South Africa 41/2   HM Amla 13* (29b 2x4)

15.1

Sharma to Amla, 1 run, moves in from outside off, from a good length, Amla goes forward in search of it and the ball darts in to hit the inside edge ... it rolls away to the leg side

South Africa 42/2   HM Amla 14* (30b 2x4)

16.1

Khan to Amla, no run, slants one in from wide of the crease, full on off stump and Amla pushes it out to the off side

16.2

Khan to Amla, no run, similar ball, comes in even more sharply and Amla seemed to be falling over as he played it out to the off side again

16.3

Khan to Amla, no run, holds the length back, but gets the prodigious inward movement going again from wide of off stump. Amla must know the location of his off stump like the back of his hand, as he chooses to leave

16.4

Khan to Amla, 1 run, this one strays onto Amla's pads and he works it away behind square for one

16.6

Khan to Amla, 1 run, plays the last ball straight down the ground for a single

South Africa 45/2   HM Amla 16* (35b 2x4)

17.1

Sharma to Amla, no run, full from Ishant, Amla is moving well now, getting nicely forward and punching into the covers

17.2

Sharma to Amla, no run, drives another full ball on off stump a trifle uppishly towards cover-point. Ishant's not getting the ball to deviate much sideways

17.3

Sharma to Amla, no run, this time he does. Lands a foot outside off back of a length and nips away. Nice movement, but he can do with moving the line closer to off stump

17.4

Sharma to Amla, no run, Amla is looking better by the minute. Presses into a crisp check drive to a length ball on off, but can't beat cover.

17.5

Sharma to Amla, no run, early and slightly exaggerated shuffle across from Amla, but Ishant doesn't make him play. Well wide outside off and an easy leave

17.6

Sharma to Amla, FOUR, edged and safe. Ishant gets a touch of away seam movement and a little extra bounce outside off. Amla was playing back to a back of good length ball and went at it with hard hands. The deviation ensured it took the edge, but it flew through the gully area, safely for four

South Africa 49/2   HM Amla 20* (41b 3x4)

19.1

Sharma to Amla, no run, back of a length from Ishant and good carry, Amla shoulders arms outside off

19.2

Sharma to Amla, no run, full and wide outside off, Amla leaves another one as it moves away off the seam

19.3

Sharma to Amla, 1 run, this time he gets one to nip in, lovely variation from Ishant and Amla is nearly caught napping as he stays back and looks to defend. The ball hit the inside half and went away to the leg side. It wasn't away from the bat-pad gap

South Africa 58/2   HM Amla 21* (44b 3x4)

20.1

Sreesanth to Amla, no run, Sree delivers a loopy full toss on off stump that surprised everybody and Amla, who tamely patted it into the covers

20.2

Sreesanth to Amla, no run, good line, just fuller than good length on off stump and moving away as Amla defends from the crease. It goes off the outside half towards cover point

20.3

Sreesanth to Amla, no run, more of the away movement from Sree, but this begins from a foot outside off and Amla leaves it easily

20.4

Sreesanth to Amla, 1 run, attacks the stumps with a full delivery and Amla gets a thick inside edge as he falls across, attemting to play a whip to the on side. Single to long leg

South Africa 61/2   HM Amla 22* (48b 3x4)

21.1

Khan to Amla, FOUR, Amla welcomes him with an easy boundary. Zaheer floats in a rather stiff and slow half volley on off stump. Amla did not have much to do, but what little he had to, he did in style. Leans out and crisply square drives it for four

21.2

Khan to Amla, 1 no ball, and this time Zak over-steps. Lands outside leg and raps the pads.

21.2

Khan to Amla, FOUR, Tendulkar dives over it at mid-on. Don't think India were really ready for such a quick resumption. Zak gets this one to nip into Amla, who adjusts well and on-drives. Sachin puts in a languid dive over the ball and lets it through

21.3

Khan to Amla, FOUR, all intent from South Africa. This time, no help from thre bowler or fielders, Amla makes it happen. Over-pitched on middle and leg, and he clips it away to the right of Tendulkar who did not have a chance to stop it this time.

21.4

Khan to Amla, no run, better delivery, 13 runs have gone since resumption and we finally have a dot ball. Zak gets one to straighten from off stump and Amla defends carefully down the track

21.5

Khan to Amla, no run, some more inward movement from Zak, Amla works it off the inside half towards square leg

21.6

Khan to Amla, no run, slants one across Amla who leaves. That brings an end to Zaheer's most forgettable over so far on this tour

South Africa 74/2   HM Amla 34* (55b 6x4)

23.1

Khan to Amla, no run, and just like that, he produces a beauty. Lands one on off and gets it to curve away from Amla after angling across him. The in-form batsman reaches out and looks completely befuddled as it eludes his edge and goes through.

23.2

Khan to Amla, no run, full again, on middle and leg, this time Amla covers the line and defends back to the bowler

23.3

Khan to Amla, 1 run, over-pitched on off, Amla digs it out from the crease into the covers for one

South Africa 78/2   HM Amla 35* (58b 6x4)

24.1

Sreesanth to Amla, no run, Sree nearly sucks Amla into a fish outside off with one just back of a length and moving away late from outside off. Amla pulls out of the drive at the last moment

24.2

Sreesanth to Amla, no run, classic shape from Sree, homes in on a full length around off stump and gets that curve away again, but this time Amla covers it well and defends to the off side

24.3

Sreesanth to Amla, 2 runs, slants this one into the body and Amla tucks it away off the backfoot through midwicket

24.4

Sreesanth to Amla, FOUR, that shot is a crash-course in the art of cover driving. Sree lands this on the driving length outside off, and despite the away swing, Amla's feet were in place for the shot early. But there was a packed cover cordon to be eluded. What does Amla do? Instead of driving through the line, he opens the face and with a late flourish of the wrists guides it squarer between cover and point. Classy.

24.5

Sreesanth to Amla, no run, Sree responds with a loopy bouncer angling down the leg side. Amla thinks of going through with the pull before pulling out.

24.6

Sreesanth to Amla, FOUR, part two in the crash-course. Another over-pitched offerinf from Sree, this time on middle and over and curving away. Amla reaches across, but doesn't overdo the forward and across movement. He stays beside the line and opens the face to drill it through the covers. More textbook, just as awesome to watch.

South Africa 88/2   HM Amla 45* (64b 8x4)

25.3

Khan to Amla, no run, Amla is beginning to look ominous now. Full from Zaheer and slanting across the right hander, who isw hardly bothered by the angle and times the off drive perfectly. Mid off hurries across to save the boundary. Zaheer shifts round the wicket

25.4

Khan to Amla, no run, lands one a foot outside off, Amla has a look at it and lets it go

25.5

Khan to Amla, 1 run, another one floated across Amla who mistimes the cover-drive and Ishant at mid off does well to run to his right and effect a sliding save to prevent more than one

South Africa 92/2   HM Amla 46* (67b 8x4)

26.1

Sreesanth to Amla, no run, a very tardy bouncer from Sree to begin his over, banged very short and going well down the leg side. Easy leave for Amla

26.2

Sreesanth to Amla, SIX, "Catch it!" is the yell from the bowler, but Amla has slammed Sree over the boundary to bring up a fluent half-century. Short ball, got Amla into the pull and Sree reckoned it was top-edged and that Zaheer at fine leg was in business. He ran across to his left only to see it sail over, backward of square leg. There was another fielder squarer for the shot, but he's bisected them perfectly

26.3

Sreesanth to Amla, 2 runs, a leading edge this time, but things are going SA's way now. Sree opens up Amla whose drive runs off the edge behind point for a couple more

26.4

Sreesanth to Amla, no run, another bouncer going down the leg, another duck from Amla

26.5

Sreesanth to Amla, FOUR, edged and just wide of Laxman at second slip. Sree gets the away movement going, very subtle and god enough to get the outside edge as Amla drives without moving forward and across. But the edge flies through safe.

26.6

Sreesanth to Amla, 1 run, finishes with another completely-in-control pull as Sree bangs it in. Straight to deep square leg this time for one, but that shot was loaded with intent. India need to start afresh here.

South Africa 105/2   HM Amla 59* (73b 9x4 1x6)

27.1

Khan to Amla, no run, floated wide of the stumps and Amla leaves the first ball

27.2

Khan to Amla, no run, over-pitched, no movement now for Zaheer and Amla punches it off the front foot towards mid on

27.3

Khan to Amla, no run, huge appeal for caught behind. Zaheer gets one to move away from Amla out of nowhere and he has a feel for it. No contact with ball, and the bat thuds into the pad to cause a noise that creates some interest. Good call from the umpire, it's not out

27.4

Khan to Amla, no run, this one straigthtens a touch from well outside off and Amla leaves easily

27.5

Khan to Amla, no run, Zaheer gets this to angle across Amla and hold its line. Arms are shouldered again

27.6

Khan to Amla, no run, another peach from Zaheer, boy South Africa are surviving the good ones and killing the bad ones! This one nips away from Amla too, who does everything except edge it through to Dhoni.

South Africa 105/2   HM Amla 59* (79b 9x4 1x6)

28.3

Sreesanth to Amla, OUT, Amla has played one shot too many and Sree has struck with the short ball. We have had a few comments, asking whether Amla thought this was the Twenty20 match for which he's been picked.. Well, he was in T20 mode since the rain resumption, wasn't he? Sree gets this bouncer to end on off and middle, which meant Amla had to pull it all the way across. He went for the challenge, and tried to clear the two men in the deep, but this was onto him faster than he'd have though. The top-edge loops up and lands in deep midwicket's hands. India have a big wicket here. Sree gives him a bit of a send-off
