India in South Africa ODI Series - 1st ODI

South Africa v India

South Africa won by 135 runs

I am Nitin Sundar taking you through this game. Sanjay Murari is on scoring. One slip, a widish gully close in, and a decent crowd watching from a distance. Zaheer has the ball. Smith is on strike.

Dan can't understand much with regards the SA team selection for today. He says, "Why play 2 left armers? why play 4 seamers when you have 4 possible spinners in your squad for a reason? Why play only 6 batsmen with 1 sort of allrounder in Botha? Where are the lower order hitters - how do we expect to make runs in the last 10 overs if we are a few wickets down? How exactly does Tahir excite Smith if he cant even play at his home ground where he has taken TONS of wickets this season?? BIZARRE?!"

14.17 Another 13 minutes to the start. Time then to head over to our other delights like the YouTube channel, and our Twitter feed. Feel Munaf's presence beefs up India's bowling? Or think he's going to be more than a liability in the field? Head over to our Facebook page and let us know.

Everyone is confused about, and by, the line-ups, which is only to be expected given the proximity to the World Cup. Both South Africa and India have fringe players who have a lot riding on these five games.

Toss: No surprises there - Smith has won, Dhoni has lost. Cape Town was an aberration. No surprises in Smith's call either - South Africa will bat.

Smith says his wrist is holding up well. Imran Tahir, Faf du Plessis and Robin Petersen are not playing, so it is just Botha on spin duty.

Dhoni reiterates that batting will be tough initially while chasing. He wants his young side to "confuse the selectors a bit" leading up to the World Cup. "Piyush, Ashwin, Sreesanth and one more guy is not playing," he says with a sheepish smile. Captains, these days!

Ok, there seems to be some confusion over the Indian combination. It now emerges that they are playing three seamers - Zaheer, Nehra and Munaf. Harbhajan is the specialist spinner, while Yuvraj, Raina and co. will turn their arm over as well. Rohit Sharma gets a game, while Yusuf Pathan sits out. There are batsmen everywhere in their line-up, with Dhoni, who averages 50.28 in the format, at No. 7. Yusuf Pathan is in at 8. And Umesh Yadav is probably Dhoni's "one more guy". Or Yusuf.

South Africa are playing four seamers and Botha. Parnell and Tsotsobe get a game, while Steyn and Morne are in there too. Those guys will be more than a handful under lights.

Pitch report in Durban: Mike Haysman reckons there will be good bounce. Shaun Pollock adds that there may be moisture under the surface, and there is some dry brownish grass. The few cracks won't affect this hard track at all. The team batting second will have some concerns though, with the dew coming out. Ashish Nehra, who snaked a few past a befuddled English line-up here in the 2003 World Cup, will know.

13.55 local time Sunny skies in Durban to usher in the one-dayers. Welcome all! The pleasant weather is a break from the gloom in which each of the three Tests began. That, however, did not deter from a cracker of a Test series. If we have half that entertainment in the five ODIs, we should be pleased. Here's Sid Talya's preview to the first game. Toss in five minutes.

Meanwhile, England have managed to squeak past Australia in a cracking Adelaide Twenty20. The last pair managed to hit the winning runs off the last ball. Here's all the action from Adelaide.

0.1

Khan to Smith, 2 wides, slides the first one down the leg from over the wicket, Dhoni fluffs it and South Africa are gifted two

0.1

Khan to Amla, no run, back of a length and on the stumps to Amla, Zaheer bustles in at 127 kph which is actually an improvement on his Test pace. Amla defends from the crease

0.2

Khan to Amla, no run, exaggerated shuffle across and an attempt to drive on the up. Zaheer's angled delivery across Amla holds its line and carries to Dhoni

0.3

Khan to Amla, 1 run, back of a length again, Amla tries to force it off the backfoot to the leg side and ends up getting a thick leading edge towards mid on for a quick single

0.4

Khan to Smith, no run, on the corridor outside off and holding its line again. Not much movement yet, with the white ball for Zaheer. Smith leaves

0.5

Khan to Smith, no run, here comes the movement. Zaheer gets one to nip away beautifully from a length and Smith is drawn into a fish outside off. That was close to the outside edge, but missed

0.6

Khan to Smith, no run, Smith's concerned by the previous delivery and jumps across the crease, but Zaheer holds the length back. Smith defends in the end to the off side

End of over 1 (3 runs) South Africa 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
GC Smith    0* (3b)      Z Khan    1-0-3-0
HM Amla    1* (3b)

Ajay believes in strength by numbers. "India have a good bowling unit.. everyone except Vijay can bowl!" Nehra to bowl now.

1.1

Nehra to Amla, FOUR, Amla has creamed him through the covers. Gentle delivery from Nehra angling across and sitting up for Amla to drive it through the line. He opens the wrists and dispatches it off the front foot

1.2

Nehra to Amla, 1 wide, that's a monster wide. Nehra has to rebowl that

1.2

Nehra to Amla, 1 run, tight singe to an alert Raina running in from cover and looking for the under-arm throw, but he fails to collect cleanly

1.3

Nehra to Smith, FOUR, Nehra begins in generous fashion, bowling a perfect delivery for the right hander, to Smith. It drifts harmlessly onto the pads and Smith helps it on its way to the fine leg fence with a neat clip

1.4

Nehra to Smith, no run, better line, moves over to off stump and Smith defends to the off side

1.5

Nehra to Smith, FOUR, that's unlucky for Nehra. Smith chips out, can't get to the length of a ball that was dropped shorter on off stump, and he opens the face in an attempt to guide it square. Ends up guiding it much finer than he'd have wanted, and beats the lone slip, for four more

1.6

Nehra to Smith, no run, fuller delivery angling into the stumps and Smith is obdurate in defence.

End of over 2 (14 runs) South Africa 17/0 (RR: 8.50)
GC Smith    8* (7b 2x4)      A Nehra    1-0-14-0
HM Amla    6* (5b 1x4)      Z Khan    1-0-3-0

2.1

Khan to Amla, 1 run, Amla shuffles across, and gets inside the line of a short ball and whips it behind square for one

2.2

Khan to Smith, no run, and again. Zaheer gets another one to dart away off the seam. Smith is concerned, this time he is reluctant to come forward and reaches out half-heartedly for a defesive shot, and misses

2.3

Khan to Smith, no run, better from Smith, gets forward and looks to drive on the up, but can't time it. Plays it towards the covers

2.4

Khan to Smith, 1 run, Smith skips out of the crease again, and opens the face to steer a back of length delivery behind point for a single

2.5

Khan to Amla, no run, regulation delivery, angling across Amla from over the wicket and he leaves

2.6

Khan to Amla, no run, back of a length again, Amla tries to force it off the backfoot through the off side, but can't time it.

End of over 3 (2 runs) South Africa 19/0 (RR: 6.33)
HM Amla    7* (8b 1x4)      Z Khan    2-0-5-0
GC Smith    9* (10b 2x4)      A Nehra    1-0-14-0

3.1

Nehra to Smith, 2 runs, well played by Smith. Nehra targets the pads with a length ball coming in from wide of the crease, Smith presses the front foot across and works it with the angle through midwicket for a couple

3.2

Nehra to Smith, no run, crisply drives a length ball on off stump towards mid off

3.3

Nehra to Smith, no run, back of a length on middle and Zaheer gets behind the line to defend to the leg side

3.4

Nehra to Smith, no run, drifts into the pads, Smith glances it square, but can't find the gap

3.5

Nehra to Smith, OUT, Kamikaze from Smith. That's a horror shot. A horrendous shot. He was caught at slip, but that was not an outside edge. Smith charges down the track and across, and gets a delivery that was not there for the drive, around off stump. He tries to hoick it across the line, without being in any position to play the shot. He gets a top edge that loops high and nestles in Rohit Sharma's hands as he backpedals from the lone slip. Smith is not Zaheer's bunny today. He has ended up being his own bunny for a change. Smith c Smith b Smith.

GC Smith c Sharma b Nehra 11 (16m 15b 2x4 0x6) SR: 73.33

Colin Ingram is the new man in, but Amla faces.

3.6

Nehra to Amla, 1 run, back of a length again, Amla forces it off the backfoot, against the angle, towards midwicket for a single

End of over 4 (3 runs) South Africa 22/1 (RR: 5.50)
HM Amla    8* (9b 1x4)      A Nehra    2-0-17-1
CA Ingram    0* (0b)      Z Khan    2-0-5-0

4.1

Khan to Amla, no run, back of a length, Amla stays in the crease and opens the face to defend to the off side

4.2

Khan to Amla, no run, another one on a decent length. Amla again presses back and looks to play him square, but can't make good connection

4.3

Khan to Amla, FOUR, edged but safe. That will be classified as a drop in some parts of the world. Zaheer gets one to angle across Amla who goes at it hard without feet. A thick outside edge results and it flies past Rohit, diving away to his right from the lone slip.

4.4

Khan to Amla, 3 runs, shot. Amla moves nicely into a check drive through the off side, and picks up three for his effortless push. That was agakin short of driving length, but Amla's magic took the length out of the equation.

Two slips for Ingram.

4.5

Khan to Ingram, no run, back of a length and coming into Ingram who defends from the crease

4.6

Khan to Ingram, no run, Ingram attempts an ambitious cut to a short ball, too close to the body and fails to make connection. Though to Dhoni

End of over 5 (7 runs) South Africa 29/1 (RR: 5.80)
CA Ingram    0* (2b)      Z Khan    3-0-12-0
HM Amla    15* (13b 2x4)      A Nehra    2-0-17-1

5.1

Nehra to Amla, FOUR, boy, Amla's smashed that one. Nehra lands a short delivery at a very comfortable line for the pull and Amla obliges. In position in a flash and he goes over the top on purpose.

5.2

Nehra to Amla, FOUR, even better! Amla is going after Nehra here, and I mean literally. He scurries down the pitch and it atleast a foot and a half down the track when he makes contact with what would have been a back of length delivery. He then creams it through the covers with a flourish.

5.3

Nehra to Amla, FOUR, another one spanked on the up through the covers. The boundary at Castle corner is being peppered and Harbhajan at mid off is a tired man. This one was slightly fuller from Nehra and angling across without deviation. Amla reaches across and pounds it in imperious style.

5.4

Nehra to Amla, no run, Nehra angles one across and Amla looks to tickle it square, but can't make contact.

5.5

Nehra to Amla, 3 runs, timing with a capital T. Nehra over-pitches this time on the stumps and Amla didn't do much really. Just showed it the face of the bat. The next moment, you had Harbhajan running after it down the ground. He manages to slide and save the fourth run

5.6

Nehra to Ingram, no run, Ingram works a length ball towards square leg, can't get it away for runs

End of over 6 (15 runs) South Africa 44/1 (RR: 7.33)
CA Ingram    0* (3b)      A Nehra    3-0-32-1
HM Amla    30* (18b 5x4)      Z Khan    3-0-12-0

6.1

Khan to Amla, 4 leg byes, Amla is charging all over the crease. Gets inside the line of a short ball on middle and leg and gets it away off his thighs past Dhoni diving to his left for four leg-byes

6.2

Khan to Amla, no run, fuller delivery this time, Amla times it like a dream, but Harbhajan will be pleased this one came straight to him

6.3

Khan to Amla, no run

6.4

Khan to Amla, FOUR, Amla skips across yet again, Zaheer feeds him on the pads again and Amla glances it fine for another four. India are bleeding boundaries

6.5

Khan to Amla, no run, holds the length back this time and gets it to angle across, outsicde off. Amla opens the face and defends to the off side

6.6

Khan to Amla, no run, better lines to end the over, back of a length on off stump and Amla forces it back towards Zaheer

End of over 7 (8 runs) South Africa 52/1 (RR: 7.42)
HM Amla    34* (24b 6x4)      Z Khan    4-0-16-0
CA Ingram    0* (3b)      A Nehra    3-0-32-1

Bowling change. Munaf Patel, right arm over. One slip and a short cover, and a widish gully in place.

7.1

Patel to Ingram, no run, tight line, not much movement from back of a length and Ingram defends towards the off side

7.2

Patel to Ingram, no run, slightly fuller, but not there for the drive yet. Ingram presses forward and defends compactly

7.3

Patel to Ingram, no run, this one is on the driving length on off stump and Ingram punches it off the front foot back down the track. Munaf fields on his follow through. Not much of a follow through for this man - I think Kumble had a more exaggerated one.

7.4

Patel to Ingram, no run, another one there and there abouts - Ingram is not going after everything, like Amla. Defends another one to the covers

7.5

Patel to Ingram, no run, gets this one to grip on a length and angle across Ingram who leaves

7.6

Patel to Ingram, no run, MM Patel - Munaf Maiden Patel. Length ball on off stump, Ingram plays out the over with another defensive push down the track

End of over 8 (maiden) South Africa 52/1 (RR: 6.50)

Saroj: "Amla now crosses ODI avg of 60. Only next to Ryan ten Doeschate"

ten Doeschate, the Bradman of ODIs.

8.1

Khan to Amla, 1 run, width for Amla, Zaheer is trying to consciously avoid giving him deliveries on the pads. Amla stays in the crease and flays it without much feet movement and gets it out to the man in the deep backward of point

8.2

Khan to Ingram, no run, Ingram tries another forcing shot to a short ball that isn't wide enough for the cut. And misses. On an unrelated note, Ingram's stance and style reminds me of Mark Butcher.

8.3

Khan to Ingram, no run, this one angles into Ingram from off towards leg and he works it towards mid of

8.4

Khan to Ingram, no run, looks to work one towards the leg side off the off stump line and gets a thick inside edge into the pads. He's still on 0.

8.5

Khan to Ingram, 1 run, Ingram finally opens his account. Short ball without much room and he opens the face to force it through point for one

8.6

Khan to Amla, no run, Amla presses back in the crease, and late. No one knows what he's upto with the footwork. Can't get this one away though - length ball on the stumps, played back down the track

End of over 9 (2 runs) South Africa 54/1 (RR: 6.00)

CA Ingram    1* (13b)      MM Patel    1-1-0-0

9.1

Patel to Ingram, 1 run, Ingram gets off strike immediately, eases one on the pads behind square on the leg side for a single

Amla now has a silly mid off staring down at him.

9.2

Patel to Amla, 3 runs, that doesn't stop him from skipping out to his first ball from Munaf and looking to launch him over the covers. He doesn't time the shot and it dribbles over and a languid Nehra gives it a distinct 80s style chase. A third run is stolen.

9.3

Patel to Ingram, no run, Ingram takes a leaf from Amla's book and chips out of the crease. Can't quite execute the shot though and plays it back to the bowler

9.4

Patel to Ingram, 1 run, on the pads this time and Ingram whips it behind square for another single

9.5

Patel to Amla, no run, slower ball of sorts from Munaf. Not very drastic, the drop in pace, but it had Amla in a little trouble as he lined him up for the expansive drive. Pulled out of the shot at the last moment and guided it to cover-point

9.6

Patel to Amla, FOUR, no problems this time. Gentle length ball, doing nothing off the pitch and Amla reads the pace early. He lifts it through the line, on the up, over the covers and it is a comfortable boundary

End of over 10 (9 runs) South Africa 63/1 (RR: 6.30)
HM Amla    42* (29b 7x4)      MM Patel    2-1-9-0

Bowling Powerplay taken.

10.1

Khan to Ingram, no run, back of a length on off stump, Ingram is out of the crease, but can't get to the length and defends back down the track

10.2

Khan to Ingram, 1 run, back of a length on off stump and forced away with a flourish to Kohli, sweeping at the cover fence

10.3

Khan to Amla, no run, huge appeal turned down. And the right decision too. That landed outside leg and trapped him in front of leg as he shuffled across.

10.4

Khan to Amla, 1 run, full delivery on off stump, Amla drives it softly towards mid off and pinches another single

10.5

Khan to Ingram, no run, on off stump, Ingram stays in the crease and works it to the off side

10.6

Khan to Ingram, no run, Ingram's shot selection is a touch awry today. Goes for a pull shot, to a delivery that wasn't all that short. Can't time it as it hurries into him. Dribbles away towards mid-on

End of over 11 (2 runs) South Africa 65/1 (RR: 5.90)
CA Ingram    4* (20b)      Z Khan    6-0-20-0

India have tried a short cover and a silly mid-off to Amla. Now they have a man, standing betwee both positions.

11.1

Patel to Amla, 1 run, length delivery a touch outside off, Amla glides it off an open face towards third man

11.2

Patel to Ingram, no run, another slower delivery from Munaf, Ingram is early on the drive and then checks his shot and gets it out towards point

11.3

Patel to Ingram, 1 run, and an effort ball this time. Back of a length and good rise across Ingram, who works it towards third man

11.4

Patel to Amla, FOUR, ho ho, slower ball to Amla, he saw it coming even before Munaf decided to bowl a slower ball. Goes back in the crease and then reaches out to get to the length and loft it straight over the bowler's head. Lands just short of the boundary.

11.5

Patel to Amla, 1 run, back of a length, wise decision, and Amla steers it square for a single

11.6

Patel to Ingram, OUT, Ingram's scratchy innings has ended in a manner that typified his stay out there. Poor shot selection, and poor execution. Short ball, he goes for the pull and is really late on the shot. He ends up skying a top edge towards mid-on. That's that then from Ingram - he never got going today. Munaf has a wicket.

AB de Villiers comes out now. Amla and AB - not too many pairs I'd rather be watching.

12.1

Nehra to de Villiers, FOUR, and that's why. He's just walked out. You'd expect him to take time to get his bearings. You'd be wrong. AB walks into a length ball angling across him and eases it off the meat of the bat through the covers. Smooth.

12.2

Nehra to de Villiers, no run, holds the length back this time and AB stays back in the crease and lets it go

12.3

Nehra to de Villiers, no run, fuller ball on the stumps and AB pushes it towards mid on

12.4

Nehra to de Villiers, no run, length ball angling across again, AB refrains from driving and plays defensively to the off side

12.5

Nehra to de Villiers, FOUR, Arun Lal on air terms this a forgettable delivery. Nehra lands it a foot and a half outside leg stump. And it does nothing off the pitch. It is going harmlessly down the track and AB would have got a wide if he'd let it go. He didn't. Instead, he tapped it on its way to fine leg

12.6

Nehra to de Villiers, no run, ends the over with a dot ball

End of over 13 (8 runs) South Africa 80/2 (RR: 6.15)

13.1

Patel to Amla, 1 run, Amla has raced to fifty. Munaf delivers an off cutter on off stump and Amla clips it towards midwicket with the deviation for a single

13.2

Patel to de Villiers, 1 run, good line, on the corridor outside off and AB stays beside the line to defend down the track

13.3

Patel to Amla, OUT, Harbhajan's taken a crucial and difficult catch, making it look easier than it was. Amla was on the attack, looking to hit India's seamers out of the attack, but for once, he has mistimed one of those shots. Munaf benefits from keeping it short of a driving length. Amla walks down the track, and goes through with a swat-loft over mid-on despite not getting to the pitch. He doesn't middle it and it loops high over mid-on. Harbhajan runs back and takes it as it comes down over his left shoulder. Good take and end of a sparkling inningss.

13.4

Patel to de Villiers, no run, full and wide outside the off, AB can't time the drive through the off side

Duminy is the new man in. Miller is the next man in the line-up, ahead of Botha. SA are a little light on batting today. Can India make that count?

13.5

Patel to de Villiers, no run, holds the length back, AB gets beside the line and defends to the off side

13.6

Patel to de Villiers, no run, another good delivery to end the over, Munaf lands it on the McGrath area of uncertainty outside off and gets it to bounce extra. AB is looking to pull out of the shot but ends up steering it to the off side

Round the wicket with a slip to AB.

14.2

Harbhajan Singh to de Villiers, no run, tossed up and straightening into AB who defends with a straight bat. A touch of over spin for Harbhajan there.

14.3

Harbhajan Singh to de Villiers, no run, wider outside off this time and turning in, AB presses forward and drives into the covers

14.4

Harbhajan Singh to de Villiers, 1 run, this time he works it with the spin towards the leg side for a single

14.5

Harbhajan Singh to Duminy, no run, JP stays well back to a back of length delivery. Turn and bounce for Harbhajan, JP covers it well and plays to the off side

14.6

15.2

Patel to de Villiers, 1 run, fuller outside off and AB steers it behind point for a cheeky single. AB responded late, but made it in time before Rohit's throw came in. It wasn't the sharpest, and missed the stumps

15.3

Patel to Duminy, no run, short ball, tucking JP up in the crease and he hops on the back foot to defend down the track

15.4

Patel to Duminy, no run, slightly fuller, but not driving length yet. JP defends as he moves forward, into the off side

15.5

Patel to Duminy, 2 runs, sprays this one on the pads and JP works it off the pads for a couple

Widish leg slip in place now.

15.6

Patel to Duminy, 1 run, Munaf gets this one to nip away from middle and off, JP forces it square off the back foot for a single

Drinks being taken. Intersting start to this game - neither team has brought it's A game to the fore. Barring Amla, no one really impressed. Munaf has got into a good rhythm now.

The action has left Varun so unimpressed that he's still cribbing about the selection. "If Murali Vijay is not a sure starter for the world cup, why play him as an opener? India could rather give chance to Yusuf in place of Vijay and open with Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma.."

16.1

Harbhajan Singh to Duminy, no run, tossed up on off and turning away, JP comes forward and defends with the spin

16.2

Harbhajan Singh to Duminy, no run, holds the length back, on off stump and straightening as JP goes back to defend to the off side

16.6

17.2

Patel to de Villiers, no run, rare short and wide ball from Munaf, and AB latches on with a powerful cut in front of square. Yuvraj at cover does well, tumbling away to his right to prevent runs

17.3

Patel to de Villiers, 2 runs, this one is on the pads, AB works it with the angle through midwicket for a couple

17.4

Patel to de Villiers, 1 run, another cracking cut to a short ball outside off, but now there is a sweeper on the square boundary to keep it to a single

17.5

Patel to Duminy, 2 runs, nice piece of timing from JP. Eases a length ball on off stump past Harbhajan at mid off for a couple.

25.5

Harbhajan Singh to de Villiers, SIX, AB! Looked like he sliced that one. But it carried easily over the straight boundary. If he'd timed it, it would have landed in Jo'burg. Tossed up on off, AB prances out, gets close to the pitch, but doesn't quite middle the tee-off down the ground. It didn't matter. It just kept going!

25.6

Harbhajan Singh to de Villiers, no run, Bhaj holds the length back and AB stays in the crease to pat it back to the bowler

End of over 26 (9 runs) South Africa 138/3 (RR: 5.30)

26.3

Yuvraj Singh to de Villiers, 1 run, AB drives him easily into the covers for another single

26.4

Yuvraj Singh to Duminy, SIX, SA are taking control here. Lovely hit from JP. He's down the track again, gets to the length of a flighted ball on the stumps and slams it with the spin over midwicket.

26.5

Yuvraj Singh to Duminy, 1 run, and now the single, works him off the pads in front of square and hands it to AB

26.6

Yuvraj Singh to de Villiers, 1 run, faster ans flatter on AB's stumps, he deflects it behind square for another single. They think of two and then decide against it

End of over 27 (10 runs) South Africa 148/3 (RR: 5.48)
AB de Villiers    39* (43b 2x4 1x6)      Yuvraj Singh    4-0-21-0
JP Duminy    35* (45b 1x6)      Harbhajan Singh    6-0-30-0

Fasten your seatbelts. SA have taken the Batting Powerplay. Munaf is promptly given the ball.

27.1

Patel to de Villiers, 1 run, back of a length coming in, AB works it off the pads towards midwicket for a single

27.2

Patel to Duminy, 1 run, holds the length back again, and JP steers him behind square for the 150th run

27.3

Patel to de Villiers, FOUR, you can bowl all the line and length you want, but when the field is in, you could do with pace and movement. Or yorkers. Not a length ball outside off, says AB who rocks on the backfoot and slams the pull shot with disdain, in the air. It lands a couple of metres inside the ropes.

Patel to de Villiers, 1 run, AB looks to open up the off side and carve him over cover-point, but can't elude the field. Picks a single

End of over 28 (8 runs) South Africa 156/3 (RR: 5.57)

AB de Villiers    45* (46b 3x4 1x6)      Yuvraj Singh    4-0-21-0

Zaheer comes on now. Midwicket standing back.

28.1

Khan to Duminy, 2 runs, length ball on off, not much pace and JP comes forward and across to work it across towards midwicket. He played it soft and ran hard. The result is two more.

28.2

Khan to Duminy, 1 leg bye, this one slides onto the pads, JP manages to get a single away off the pads towards the leg side

28.3

Khan to de Villiers, 1 run, mid-off is standing deep in the circle and really straight. That allows him to run across and stop an improperly timed straight drive from AB

28.4

Khan to Duminy, FOUR, Munaf at gully. Yes, you read right. And yes, you predicted right too. He dives clumsily over a steer from outside off stump and gifts Duminy four. Munaf at gully. Don't think a worse fielder has ever manned that position.

28.5

Khan to Duminy, 2 runs, JP is running them crazy here. There is no one inside the circle on the leg side. JP gets across to off stump and tickes another one square towards the leg side and hares across for a couple

28.6

Khan to Duminy, 1 run, full delivery on the pads and this time, JP times the nurdle too well for a couple. SA are assuming control here.

Avi: "Zaheer is bowling to his ex- IPL teammate (Duminy) and on the non striker, it's his future IPL teammate (AB)"

End of over 29 (11 runs) South Africa 167/3 (RR: 5.75)

Here's Harbhajan to his ex-MI team-mate, JP.

29.1

Harbhajan Singh to Duminy, no run, tight line outside off, straightens as JP looks to cut it away. Can't get the gap

29.2

Harbhajan Singh to Duminy, 1 run, this time he bolts for a tight single to Yuvraj at point. Yuvraj fired in the throw, but missed. JP was diving in though.

29.3

Harbhajan Singh to de Villiers, FOUR, AB has played the shot of the day. Full ball on middle and off, AB switches his stance and plays a sort of reverse flick, past the packed in-field in the covers for four. Fifty, comes up with a gorgeous shot

29.4

Harbhajan Singh to de Villiers, no run

29.5

Harbhajan Singh to de Villiers, 1 run, AB drives him into the covers and takes another single

29.6

Harbhajan Singh to Duminy, no run, JP tries to drive with the spin, but plays it straight to the covers. 25 off the first three PP overs.

AB de Villiers    51* (50b 4x4 1x6)      Z Khan    7-0-30-0

30.1

Khan to de Villiers, 1 leg bye, full ball, angling in after landing on leg stump and AB plays all over it as he looks to ship across the line. No appeal as they take a leg bye

Fine leg standing back. There is protection now inside the circle on the leg side

30.2

Khan to Duminy, 1 run, back of a length outside off and JP chops it behind square for a single

30.3

Khan to de Villiers, 1 run, full ball on off stump and AB goes down on a knee and mows across the line for a single to deep midwicket

30.4

Khan to Duminy, 1 leg bye, huge lbw appeal, turned down. Zaheer gets reverse swing this time, it tails in drastically into JP moving across his stumps and hits his back leg in front of leg stump, but it may have strayed down

30.5

Khan to de Villiers, no run, perfect yorker, AB can't do much with it and digs it back to the bowler from middle and leg

30.6

Khan to de Villiers, 2 runs, a good delivery followed by an ordinary one. Back of a length ball sliding down the leg and he gets it away towards fine leg for a couple.

End of over 31 (6 runs) South Africa 179/3 (RR: 5.77)
AB de Villiers    54* (54b 4x4 1x6)      Z Khan    8-0-34-0

The fourth bowler to be tried in the PP. Nehra comes on.

31.1

Nehra to Duminy, 1 bye, short ball, JP goes for a wild pull and misses. His shot selection confused Dhoni too and they take a bye

31.2

Nehra to de Villiers, FOUR, take that Nehra, says AB. Short lengths in the Powerplay, not very imaginative from Nehra. AB swivels back and brutalises it with a horizontal bat through midwicket for four

31.3

Nehra to de Villiers, FOUR, oh boy, he follows up violence with poetry. Nehra wants to cramp him for room and keeps it on leg stump as AB moves to the leg side. AB didn't have room for the cut, so he just drove him inside out, smooth as a Rolls Royce, over the covers.

31.4

Nehra to de Villiers, FOUR, and another hat-trick of fours for Nehra, who is having a shoddy day here. Full and wide outside off, enough room for the cut this time and AB happily carves it square for four more

31.5

Nehra to de Villiers, no run, appeal for lbw turned down, appeal for run out turned down. AB was walking across and looking to nurdle him across the line. That may have landed outside leg. AB started running when Dhoni collected and fired a throw at the striker's end, but he was back in time.

31.6

Nehra to de Villiers, 1 run, after five forgettable deliveries, Nehra gets the perfect PP length. The horse, however, has already bolted. 45 runs in the PP as AB digs it out to the covers for one

End of over 32 (14 runs) South Africa 193/3 (RR: 6.03)
AB de Villiers    67* (59b 7x4 1x6)      A Nehra    5-0-53-1

Yuvraj Singh to de Villiers, 1 run, tossed up on off, AB drives down the ground for another single

32.4

Yuvraj Singh to Duminy, 1 run, JP goes back in the crease and punches towards long on to bring up a fine fifty

Yuvraj Singh to de Villiers, 1 run, singles for the taking. AB works this with the spin straight to backward point standing on his heels and ambles across

32.6

Yuvraj Singh to Duminy, no run, JP stays in the crease and looks to whip off the pads as Yuvraj's delivery stays low in line with leg stump. Can't get it past the fielder though

End of over 33 (6 runs) South Africa 199/3 (RR: 6.03)
JP Duminy    50* (62b 1x4 1x6)      Yuvraj Singh    5-0-27-0

Nehra to de Villiers, 1 run, on the pads from Nehra, easily worked off the pads towards deep backward square leg for a single. SA reach 200

33.2

Nehra to Duminy, 1 run, Nehra gets some reverse now, tails into JP who spots it and manages to on-drive for one

33.3

Nehra to de Villiers, 1 run, back of a length on the pads and AB clips him off the backfoot, behind square for one more

33.4

Nehra to Duminy, 2 runs, JP gets one on the pads and glances it fine, some quick movement from the fine leg fielder keeps it down to one

33.5

Nehra to Duminy, 1 run, back of a length outside off and steered square for a single

33.6

Nehra to de Villiers, 2 runs, short ball, no pace on it and AB slaps it like an errant child for a couple towards midwicket. Drinks break, India won't mind the interval at all.

Arnie: "After having match figures of 6/23 and 2/11, Nehra seems to be 3rd time unlucky to unleash his signature streched-arm run on this ground."

Rohit comes on now. Round the wicket.

35.1

Sharma to Duminy, 1 run, speared into the pads, JP stays in the crease and forces him through midwicket for one

35.2

Sharma to de Villiers, OUT, It's been a day replete with bad balls, and Rohit had picked a wicket with one of them. Rank bad delivery, the longest of long hops, turning in and asking to be sent out of the ground as it turns into AB. He sets himself up for the pull, and must have been wondering whether he wanted to hit this to the moon or merely into the stands. Somehow, he managed to get it straight to Harbhajan at deep midwicket. Rohit celebrates in Brett Lee, Kevin Pieterseneque fashion.

AB de Villiers c Harbhajan Singh b Sharma 76 (94m 69b 7x4 1x6) SR: 110.14

36.2

Raina to Miller, OUT, finally a wicket to a good delivery. Raina slips one through Miller's defences. It landed on off stump and hurried through as Miller shaped to guide it square. He missed and leather crashed into timber. That delivery actually pressed back off stump. Raina is pleased. India have a chance to tie things up here - barring Duminy, SA are out of batsmen. 39.2

Sharma to Botha, no run, and this one squeezes down the leg side. Dhoni's appeal is turned down, and wide is not signalled. Did that hit anything? Replays awaited.

40.1

Raina to Duminy, 1 run, JP taps into the covers and they steal a tight single. A direct hit from Kohli would have caught Botha short. Dhoni could not collect cleanly, in any case.

40.2

Raina to Botha, 1 run, short and turning in from outside off, Botha stays back and cuts for a single

40.3

Raina to Duminy, 1 run, JP picks one of his innumerable singles to long on

Raina to Botha, 1 run, short ball turning in, Botha essays the forehand cross court with a touch of top spin, to long on for one

40.5

Raina to Duminy, 2 runs, another short ball, JP pulls now and Harbhajan gets into a tangle as he looks to slide on the rough area around deep midwicket. Hit foot got stuck in the turf and he seems to have hurt his knee a bit. Boundary saved, though.

40.6

Raina to Duminy, 1 run, full toss on leg stump, JP bunts to wide long on for another single

End of over 41 (7 runs) South Africa 240/5 (RR: 5.85)

41.2

Sharma to Duminy, 1 run, JP flicks away in front of square, and gets a single

41.4

Sharma to Duminy, 1 run, Botha cuts this time and takes a single through square

41.5

Sharma to Botha, 1 run, Botha's pre-meditated reverse sweep goes awry as the ball lands outside off. Somehow manages to get a single behind square on what was off side when he took guard.

41.6

Sharma to Duminy, OUT, Oh no, JP has reverse-swept himself back to the pavilion. Full and on middle from Rohit, JP quickly shifted stance and looked to get it between point and third man, but he missed. That looked plumb. Umpire Erasmus took his time, though, but eventually ruled in Rohit's favour. Huge scalp for India.

Sarfin: "Here the demerits of two extreme situations (having too much bowlers or batsmen). SA maintained a good scoring rate but out of batsmen. Ind took wickets but leaked too many runs." Well put - battle of attrition out there today. Could reap dividends for either team in the second innings.

Tiru: "why are they allowing so many singles and why cant they stop those balls just passing by them so that they can restrict the score?" If only things were so easy.

Harbhajan comes back on.

44.1

Harbhajan Singh to Botha, no run, Botha comes forward and looks to work to the leg side, but can't get it away. Some excitement from Dhoni behind the stumps.

44.2

Harbhajan Singh to Botha, no run, tossed up on off stump, Botha drives it back towards Harbhajan

44.3

Harbhajan Singh to Botha, 2 runs, rare sighting. Munaf and Nehra come together to save a boundary in the deep. Tossed up and turning down the leg, Botha goes for the sweep and gets some top edge, but it lands safe. Munaf trots across from fine leg and taps it into the field just as it was bouncing out. Nehra teams up with him to throw it back in.

44.4

Harbhajan Singh to Botha, no run, lovely bowling, Botha gets the quicker one on middle and off and plays it back to the bowler

44.5

Harbhajan Singh to Botha, 1 run, speared into the pads, Botha works it away behind square for one

Dhoni has forgotten that he has seamers in his side. Not a bad thing to forget, considering how the spinners have done.

45.1

Sharma to Botha, 1 run, turning down the leg, worked along with the spin to short fine leg for one

45.2

Sharma to Parnell, 1 run, on the pads, Parnell stays in the crease and works it through midwicket for one

45.3

Sharma to Botha, 1 run, full and fast on the toes, Botha swishes it away through square leg for a single

45.4

Sharma to Parnell, no run, on Parnell's pads, he looks for the glance, but can't get it away

45.5

Sharma to Parnell, 1 run, turning away from back of a length on middle stump, Parnell comes down the track and slaps against the turn to long on

45.6

Sharma to Botha, 1 run, full on leg stump, laboured down the ground to long on for one.

These death overs are turning out to be quite anti-climactic. SA playing it safe and India pleased to give them the singles.

46.3

Harbhajan Singh to Botha, OUT, The revenge of the offspinner. Harbhajan delivers a full delivery turning in from around off stump. Botha looks to mow him to the leg side and misses. Stumps are down. Harbhajan has the look that seems to say, "Gotcha, my man."

Surprise surprise. Seamer to bowl. Zak is back.

47.1

Khan to Steyn, 1 run, back of a length, angling across Steyn who opens the face and guides it towards point

47.2

Khan to Parnell, 1 run, mistimes a drive to Yuvraj at covers who swoops on the ball and then chooses to not throw. A scrambled single is taken.

47.3

Khan to Steyn, no run, slower ball, Steyn is foxed by it and is early into the shot as he looks to whack across the line. A stiff breeze is set up by his swing, but the ball heads to Dhoni.

Khan to Steyn, 1 run, short ball just outside off, Steyn opens the face and guides towards third man for one

47.5

Khan to Parnell, 1 run, full ball, Parnell drives down the ground for one

Gendy: "Looking at the economy rate of bowlers today - Nehra leaked like a broken pipe! Hope this series doesn't undo the hard work he has put in over the past 3 years after a long phase of oblivion!"

48.1

Harbhajan Singh to Steyn, no run, golly, Harbhajan breaks the 100kph barrier. Fired in at 105 kph according to the broadcast, that medium-pacer did not turn and Steyn did not even get close to making contact as it whizzed past

48.2

Harbhajan Singh to Steyn, 1 run, another fast one, this time on the stumps and Steyn gets a single to long on

48.3

Harbhajan Singh to Parnell, 2 runs, mowed away, this one was on middle and leg and Parnell could not quite get the elevation, so two to cow corner

48.4

Harbhajan Singh to Parnell, SIX, this time he rocket launches it over the ropes. Another full ball on middle and leg, asking to be slog swept and Parnell obliged in comprehensive style

48.5

Harbhajan Singh to Parnell, 1 run, short and fast, Parnell stays put in the crease and dinks it to short third man for a single

48.6

Harbhajan Singh to Steyn, 2 runs, drives another flat and full delivery down the ground for a single. Harbhajan's spell ends with an expensive over.

Kamal: "@Gendy: I guess you are an Anti-Indian fan... I seriously wonder what he did in last year to justify his place.. He may be the leading wicket taking bowler, that is because he played more matches than other bowlers.. Any day Sree is better than nehra in terms of bowling , batting, fielding as well as entertaining..."

I agree with the last of those attributes. Nehra is not the most entertaining.

49.1

Khan to Parnell, 1 run, short ball, angled into the body and Parnell is surprised by the length and his hand comes off, as he looks to steer it square

49.2

Khan to Steyn, OUT, Zaheer gets Steyn again. Another short ball, from round the wicket. Steyn goes for the pull, but has no room to pull it off. Loops the top edge towards mid on and it is easily taken.

49.3

Khan to Parnell, 1 run, a rare perfect yorker. I can recall exactly one more in this innings, also from Zaheer. Reverse swing into the left hander who digs it out to long off for a single

49.4

Khan to Morkel, OUT, another yorker, another wicket. Zaheer gets one to snake through Morkel's defense. He stays in the crease and looks to somehow keep the reverse swinging delivery away from his pads, but he could not save the furniture. Leg stump is hit.

M Morkel b Khan 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

49.5

Khan to Tsotsobe, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Tsotso steers behind point for a single. Can India bowl SA out? Counts for nothing.

49.6

Khan to Parnell, 2 runs, no they can't. Attempted yorker, this time tails into the pads on the full and Parnell whips it away square for a couple in front of square

18.06 I'll be back to bring you the chase in about half an hour. Meanwhile, head across to our Facebook page and share your thoughts on how this could pan out under the Durban lights. Added @ESPNcricinfo to your twitter feed yet? Check it out and do the needful.

Elaborator makes a rare observation: "So, Tsotsobe, after 15 matches, still have an average of infinity."

"AB and JP take SA to 289" would be an apt headline for that innings. They came together in dodgy circumstances and showed a lot of enterprise in adding 131 quickly enough to take SA ahead of the game, with the slog overs to come. Their stand allowed SA's thin lower middle order to play it safe and just carry on the momentum, to run up a strong score. This has not been a typical Durban track, but India's medium-pacers did little to test the bounce on offer. We will only know the real colour of the pitch when Steyn and Morkel have bowled, and if there is dew under lights, they could make it tough for India's batsmen. Sriram Veera's bulletin is getting updated here.
