India in South Africa ODI Series - 5th ODI

South Africa v India

South Africa won by 33 runs (D/L method)

Right, game time! What's new - Zaheer has the ball and Smith takes guard. Two slips. This is Nitin Sundar bringing you the action today.

Prem: "I think if Parthiv keeps the wicket, India will have one more bowling option as Dhoni. As we are already one bowler short in medium pace bowling options." He may be onto something here. India can do with an extra seam-up option.

Srini: "One big benefit from this tour is Dhoni learned the art of winning toss, which might com handy in World cup." Well, he's getting there slowly.

Apologies. Australia have clearly won too many World Cups on the trot, I've lost count. They have 1987, 99, 2003 and 2007 already. 2011, if they win, will be the fourth successive win, and fifth overall.

9.40am Elsewhere, England are struggling to get going in the one-dayers, where Australia continue to remain a force. Fancy their chances for a fourth successive World Cup? Head over to our Facebook page and let us know. Checked out our Twitter feed at @ESPNcricinfo yet? High time you did.

Toss:

MS Dhoni gets into the World Cup with encouraging toss momentum. He calls right and India will field. He is hoping to capitalise on the movement early in the morning. Even as the toss happens, we get another update on the weather front - the clouds are building up again.

Now for the squad news. India have replaced Ashish Nehra with Piyush Chawla, so two spinners and two seamers for them. And a shorter tail. One lesser fast bowler in the side, which goes against India's 'bowl first on a fresh track' strategy. South Africa are unchaged, so Imran Tahir sits out again.

Updates are flowing in - First, the weather: There was rain in the morning, but it has cleared now. Craig Mathews says there could be more later in the day. Mike Haysman reckons the team winning the toss should field because there will be sideways movement early in the morning.

9.18am A warm welcome to the denouement of what's been an absolute cracker of a tour between two of the top sides in the world. The Test series was drawn, the one-off T20 went to India, and going into the fifth ODI, the series remains tied. The impending World Cup makes things more interesting for both sides? Will Imran Tahir get a game before the big event? Will Suresh Raina stand up and be counted, with his World Cup spot under threat from the impressive Virat Kohli? Here is Sriram Veera's preview to Centurion, fittingly the venue where it all began with the first Test. And like the last time, we again have a rain threat. Updates are awaited.

This is the only day game in the series, and that can alter the dynamics considerably. Late-evening swing and seam will not be a factor today. There might instead be early morning juice on offer, especially with all the recent rain in Centurion, and a track that must have sweated under the covers.

0.1

Khan to Smith, no run, over-pitched to the extent of being a yorker, on middle and leg. Smith defends solidly

Left arm over the wicket.

0.2

Khan to Smith, no run, back of a length on off stump, Smith as always displays positive footwork, moves forward and defends

0.3

Khan to Smith, 1 run, holds its line and comes into Smith from back of a length, outside off. He tucks it behind square on the leg side and opens his account

0.4

Khan to Amla, 1 run, first hint of swing, straightens into Amla from off stump and he nudges into midwicket for one

0.5

Khan to Smith, 1 run, a not so threatening away swinger, startes well outside off but Smith has a flash at it and gets an outside edge that quickly runs away backward of point. Chawla runs across from third man to field it

0.6

Khan to Amla, no run, dangled outside off and it holds its line as it carries through nicely. Amla leaves

End of over 1 (3 runs) South Africa 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
HM Amla    1* (2b)      Z Khan    1-0-3-0
GC Smith    2* (4b)

Munaf begins over the wicket to Smith, with two slips.

1.1

MM Patel to Smith, FOUR, he begins with a very poor ball. Friendly pace, short and wide outside off, no movement. Smith bangs it away through the covers emphatically.

One slip disappears. Short cover comes in.

1.2

MM Patel to Smith, no run, nice comeback from Munaf. Adjusts the line, lands this just outside off, and he gets it to nip away. Smith pokes at it from the crease and misses.

1.3

MM Patel to Smith, no run, back of a length outside off and defended into the covers off the back foot

1.4

MM Patel to Smith, 1 run, onto the pads this time, at 132 kph and Smith works it behind square for a single

1.5

MM Patel to Amla, FOUR, and here is a scene we have seen so many times in this series. A seamer over-pitches on off stump, with several men inside the circle on the off side. And Hashim Amla unfurls the perfect cover drive that has fielders tumbling everywhere, but gives no one the chance to stop it. Four through the covers

1.6

MM Patel to Amla, 4 leg byes, horror start from Munaf. This one is on the pads, bonus runs for South Africa as Amla gets inside the line and gets something on it, down to fine leg for four

End of over 2 (13 runs) South Africa 16/0 (RR: 8.00)
HM Amla    5* (4b 1x4)      MM Patel    1-0-9-0
GC Smith    7* (8b 1x4)      Z Khan    1-0-3-0

2.1

Khan to Smith, no run, good line and length from Zaheer, at 130.6 kph, angles in from outside off towards Smith, who defends off the front foot. No seam movement.

2.2

Khan to Smith, no run, Smith walks down the track as Zaheer delivers, gets across to middle and off and works a length ball towards wide mid-on

2.3

Khan to Smith, OUT, Yawn. Zaheer gets Smith. On a length outside off, perfect length from Zaheer. Smith - as has been the case so many times this summer - is not sure whether he should play back, or play forward. Or even play at it. He ends up hanging the bat outside the off stump without much conviction after getting half forward and gets a healthy edge that is heading to first slip. Until Yusuf at second slip moves quickly to his right and pouches it almost in front of Rohit's face at first.

GC Smith c Pathan b Khan 7 (10m 11b 1x4 0x6) SR: 63.63

Morne van Wyk comes out now.

2.4

Khan to van Wyk, no run, angles across the right-hander who stays in the crease and sees it through

2.5

Khan to van Wyk, 1 leg bye, on the pads this time, a leg bye as van Wyk misses the nudge to the leg side

2.6

Khan to Amla, no run, over-pitched outside off, Amla sets himself up for the flowing cover drive and mistimes it

End of over 3 (1 run, wicket maiden) South Africa 17/1 (RR: 5.66)
HM Amla    5* (5b 1x4)      Z Khan    2-1-3-1
MN van Wyk    0* (2b)      MM Patel    1-0-9-0

3.1

MM Patel to van Wyk, FOUR, tentative start from van Wyk. This was a good delivery from Munaf, getting it to gently nip back in from outside off. van Wyk fends off the backfoot and the ball nearly slips in through the bat-pad gap before taking the inside edge, down to fine leg for four.

3.2

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, this time he gets behind the line nicely and defends

3.3

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, and again, Munaf cuts him in half with inward seam movement. Misses the inside edge this time, and too high to hit the stumps

3.4

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, van Wyk is conscious to get forward this time and defend from the line of off stump

3.5

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, lets this one go through outside off stump, through to Dhoni. Good carry for Munaf.

3.6

MM Patel to van Wyk, 2 runs, fractionally short, just outside off stump and van Wyk manages to force it away square off the back foot. A couple of runs towards third man

End of over 4 (6 runs) South Africa 23/1 (RR: 5.75)
MN van Wyk    6* (8b 1x4)      MM Patel    2-0-15-0
HM Amla    5* (5b 1x4)      Z Khan    2-1-3-1

4.1

Khan to Amla, no run, full length from Zaheer on off stump, Amla drives crisply but straight to cover

4.2

Khan to Amla, no run, extra bounce on this one, it was on a length around off stump and holding its line. Amla came forward into a defensive shot before being taken by surprise as it jumped up on him. Still keeps it out safely

4.3

Khan to Amla, no run, another very full delivery on middle and off, Amla reads the length nicely and drives to mid off

4.4

Khan to Amla, FOUR, not the most controlled shot. Zaheer gives Amla the width, tempting him into the square drive and Amla goes for it though it's too wide for him to play along the ground. It flew away to the left of a completely horizontal Kohli at point and went for four

4.5

Khan to Amla, FOUR, completely in control this time. Drop in pace from Zaheer, slower ball gone awry. 117 kph, overpitched on off and Amla reads the length and pace well in time to move the front foot across and cream it along the ground through the covers

4.6

Khan to Amla, 1 run, shorter outside off from round the wicket for the final delivery, Amla steers it backward of point and this time Kohli tumbles and cuts it off

End of over 5 (9 runs) South Africa 32/1 (RR: 6.40)
HM Amla    14* (11b 3x4)      Z Khan    3-1-12-1
MN van Wyk    6* (8b 1x4)      MM Patel    2-0-15-0

5.1

MM Patel to Amla, no run, more nip from Munaf, gets one to go away this time from the right hander. Amla watches closely and lets it go

5.2

MM Patel to Amla, no run, on a length around off stump, Amla check-drives compactly into the covers

Azeem: "I'm not sure if India has got their combination right for this match. If Munaf is taken to the cleaners India doesn't have another seaming option. Sree would have relished these conditions."

5.3

MM Patel to Amla, 2 runs, drops this one on the pads and Amla cashes in with an efficient nudge behind square leg for a couple

5.4

MM Patel to Amla, no run, 134 kph, just short of good length, but Amla is looking ominous now. Drives nicely on the up, but straught to Kohli at point

5.5

MM Patel to Amla, no run, a fuller length this time, Amla comes forward and defends into the off side

5.6

MM Patel to Amla, no run, good line, very close to off stump and short of a length. Amla goes back in the crease and defends it when it is beside him.

End of over 6 (2 runs) South Africa 34/1 (RR: 5.66)
HM Amla    16* (17b 3x4)      MM Patel    3-0-17-0
MN van Wyk    6* (8b 1x4)      Z Khan    3-1-12-1

6.1

Khan to van Wyk, 1 run, Zaheer lets van Wyk rotate the strike with a ball on the pads which is calmly dropped past short midwicket for a single

6.2

Khan to Amla, FOUR, too much width here. Amla would have hit that away even if it wasn't this wide outside off. Gets forward and across, and then cuts it away square between point and third man

6.3

Khan to Amla, no run, better line from Zaheer, again returning to round the wicket, Amla doesn't have the room to work with and forces it into the on side

6.4

Khan to Amla, no run, 135 kph, back of a length outside off, Amla is at least a yard down the track and outside off when he makes contact with it. Defended into the off side, eventually, it wasn't there for the drive

6.5

Khan to Amla, no run, stays back this time does Amla, keeps Zaheer guessing about the footwork, and punches into the covers.

6.6

Khan to Amla, no run, comes in from wide of the crease, Amla works it off the pads but straight to midwicket

End of over 7 (5 runs) South Africa 39/1 (RR: 5.57)
HM Amla    20* (22b 4x4)      Z Khan    4-1-17-1
MN van Wyk    7* (9b 1x4)      MM Patel    3-0-17-0

7.1

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, electric from Kohli. Poor ball from Munaf, short, wide and asking to be smashed square. van Wyk has enough time to play it in front of point. Kohli was quick, dived across to his right and cut it off

7.2

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, better line this time, no room for van Wyk to set himself up for the horizontal bat shot. He defends quietly to the off side

7.3

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, far better delivery from Munaf. Short of a length outside off and it gets big on van Wyk who looks to force a cut shot off a delivery too close to the body. Misses the outside edge, though not by much

7.4

MM Patel to van Wyk, 1 run, van Wyk camps on the back foot and steers a delivery outside off through square for a single

No slips, there is a short point and a short cover, in addition to the cordon on the circle. What are the odds on Amla still cover driving for four?

7.5

MM Patel to Amla, no run, back of a length on off stump, Amla gives it the respect it deserves with compact defence into the off side

7.6

MM Patel to Amla, no run, and now he plays the flourishy on-the-up cover drive and times it perfectly. Rohit moved quickly at short cover to stop it

End of over 8 (1 run) South Africa 40/1 (RR: 5.00)
HM Amla    20* (24b 4x4)      MM Patel    4-0-18-0
MN van Wyk    8* (13b 1x4)      Z Khan    4-1-17-1

And spin inside the first ten overs. Piyush Chawla, the leggie, comes on. has a quickish googly, but used to be guilty of over-doing it.

8.1

Chawla to van Wyk, FOUR, a harsh return to ODI cricket for Chawla, and he has himself to blame. No sweeper cover in place and he drops one short, van Wyk rocks back and it cuts away with the spin.

Slip and a shortish point in place.

8.2

Chawla to van Wyk, no run, short again, but not so wide. van Wyk's cut goes straight to cover

8.3

Chawla to van Wyk, no run, the wrong 'un, wraps him on the pad in front of leg stump as he looks to nudge it square. Polite appeal, turned down

8.4

Chawla to van Wyk, no run, short of a length again, close to off stump and he has some turn going here. van Wyk looks to cut again, but it zips past the outside edge

8.5

Chawla to van Wyk, no run, on the pads this time, van Wyk looks to nudge it round the corner, but short fine leg stops it

8.6

Chawla to van Wyk, 1 run, again on the pads, this time it is worked through midwicket for a single

End of over 9 (5 runs) South Africa 45/1 (RR: 5.00)
MN van Wyk    13* (19b 2x4)      PP Chawla    1-0-5-0
HM Amla    20* (24b 4x4)      MM Patel    4-0-18-0

Rohit: "Amla has been getting starts but not converting it into big ones. Come the WC, if Amla can start converting those starts, SA chances of posting good totals will go up dramatically."

Munaf continues with a widish slip.

9.1

MM Patel to van Wyk, FOUR, brave shot from van Wyk and he executes perfectly. This was well outside off, not the ideal line for the lap shot, but van Wky set himself up well, moving the front foot across and lapping him almost all the way over square leg

9.2

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, well bowled, Munaf replies with an effort ball, 135.5 kph and lifting extra from back of a length. van Wyk looks to force the cut shot away, and it whizzes past the outside edge. van Wyk and Munaf share a thought!

9.3

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, connects with the cut this time, but there are three men very square on the off side. He can't find the gap

9.4

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, closer to the stumps, van Wyk plays with a strraight bat this time. Defends it towards cover point

9.5

MM Patel to van Wyk, FOUR, that's another rare shot from van Wyk's repertoire and again, mighty effective. Short again from Munaf, not much width and the conventional cut would have taken it straight to the cordon. So he intentionally angles the bat at the point of contact, with the face of the bat facing upwards as he cracks it over the infield and in front of square.

9.6

MM Patel to van Wyk, no run, finishes with a defensive shot towards the covers again. Eventful over that.

End of over 10 (8 runs) South Africa 53/1 (RR: 5.30)
MN van Wyk    21* (25b 4x4)      MM Patel    5-0-26-0

10.3

Chawla to Amla, 1 run, Amla goes back in the crease and dabs a short ball turning away towards point for one

10.4

Chawla to van Wyk, FOUR, van Wyk means business here. Full ball on off stump, turning away, van Wyk doesn't give it any respect, and just drop-kicks it over the bowler's head for four down the ground. Solid and comprehensive.

10.5

Chawla to van Wyk, no run, tossed up again on off, van Wyk drives straight to cover

10.6

Chawla to van Wyk, no run, finishes with a sharp wrong 'un that zips in quickly. van Wyk did not pick it, but it was turning well down the leg side when it hit the pad

End of over 11 (7 runs) South Africa 60/1 (RR: 5.45)
MN van Wyk    26* (29b 5x4)      PP Chawla    2-0-12-0
HM Amla    22* (26b 4x4)      MM Patel    5-0-26-0

Harbhajan Singh to van Wyk, no run, back of a length on off stump and turning in, van Wyk defends down the track

HM Amla    25* (29b 4x4)      Harbhajan Singh    1-0-5-0

12.6

Pathan to van Wyk, no run, short and wide enough outside off for the cut, but van Wyk fails to connect

Ramesh: "India is playing this match in future, 3 spinners at Centurion for a 1 day, you must be kidding. Appears the Indian team managment already selected the squad as if the match were at the Eden Gardens. Plus the negative impact on the morale of Nehra can not be overlooked. If the untested Chawla was to be exposed, it would have been better to sit Rohit out who is not contiributing in any case in SA. "

End of over 13 (4 runs) South Africa 69/1 (RR: 5.30)
MN van Wyk    29* (35b 5x4)      YK Pathan    1-0-4-0

End of over 14 (5 runs) South Africa 74/1 (RR: 5.28)
MN van Wyk    32* (37b 5x4)      Harbhajan Singh    2-0-10-0

14.2

Pathan to Amla, 1 run, works this one with the spin behind square for a single

14.3

Pathan to van Wyk, FOUR, more innovation from van Wyk, he's been really enterprising today. Short of a length around off stump, van Wyk knows there are gaps deep on the off side, so he cuts it away in the air, over the covers for four. Could have easily slog swept that, but he knows where the gaps are.

14.4

Pathan to van Wyk, 1 run, chips this one in the air on purpose, lofting down to long on for one more

Drinks being taken. The only things that India can brag about in this game so far are the toss and the over-rate.

22.2

Yuvraj Singh to van Wyk, OUT, Yuvraj plucks an apple out of nowhere! The best part of the catch was how easy he made it look. Tossed up on off stump, van Wyk packs a punch in his straight drive, and thinks he can get it easily down the ground. Yuvraj seemed to say, "Talk to the hand". Left hand to be specific. He just puts the left hand out and holds a ball that was traveling at some pace. Easy does it.

26.1

Yuvraj Singh to de Villiers, OUT, Yuvraj has made AB look rather ordinary with a lovely bit of spin. It's the same thing that happened in the previous game, though then, AB was wrongly given caught behind as he lunged out. This time he is comprehensively stumped,. Slow through the air, dipping on middle and leg, and breaking away menacingly. AB was lulled into skipping down the track, fooled by the flight, and was then groping in hope as it turned past him. Dhoni had a year to break the stumps.

26.3

Yuvraj Singh to Duminy, no run, huge appeal and JP gets away with it. Very full on middle and straightening into JP who looks to sweep. He misses and it would have hit off stump. Umpire Taufel said no. Agonisingly long appeal from Yuvraj and Dhoni goes waste.

Yuvraj has brought India back into the game here. Lots of debate about his WC spot - his bowling, for me, clinches his spot in the XI. India need a solid fifth bowler in the event, and Yuvraj seems almost good enough for 10 overs.

Rahul Oak: "Ok seriously. After what happened in the last game, Dhoni should not allow Duminy to just hit balls to long-off and get a single that easily. The spinners need to try and string some dots together. Why can't he think SA have taken a batting powerplay or something?"

Raina to Amla, 1 run, works this one with the spin to long on for one

39.3

Raina to Duminy, 1 run, JP turns it around with another streer through point for one

39.4

Raina to Amla, no run

39.5

Raina to Amla, 1 wide, slips down the leg side and is called wide

39.5

Raina to Amla, 1 run, Amla stays back in the crease and guides square for another single

39.6

Raina to Duminy, 1 run, short on off stump to end the over, and JP slaps it past the bowler to his left for another single

End of over 40 (9 runs) South Africa 212/3 (RR: 5.30)
JP Duminy    27* (38b)      SK Raina    2-0-13-0
HM Amla    102* (116b 9x4)      Z Khan    6-1-34-1

That was the 1st 100 of the series. And Amla has 6 tons and 6 fifties in 11 heady months. Munaf is back now.

40.1

MM Patel to Duminy, 1 run, back of a length outside off, JP steers through third man for one more

40.2

MM Patel to Amla, 1 run, over-pitched on middle and leg, Amla clips it off the pads for yet another single

40.3

MM Patel to Duminy, 1 run, full outside off, JP drives to Zaheer at long off for another single. SA will be thinking of that batting PP now. With some trepidation - it has not been kingf to them so far this series.

40.4

MM Patel to Amla, 1 run, full on Amla's off stump and he drives past extra cover for one more

40.5

MM Patel to Duminy, 1 run, over-pitched outside off and driven fluently towards deep cover for one more

40.6

MM Patel to Amla, 1 run, single to third man off a slower ball to end the over

End of over 41 (6 runs) South Africa 218/3 (RR: 5.31)
HM Amla    105* (119b 9x4)      MM Patel    6-0-32-0
JP Duminy    30* (41b)      SK Raina    2-0-13-0

Change of ends for Zaheer. The batting PP has been taken.

41.1

Khan to Amla, 1 run, back of a length anf coming into Amla who slips it square for one

41.2

Khan to Duminy, 1 wide, huge wide down the leg side as Zaheer bowls from over the wicket

41.2

Khan to Duminy, 1 run, this time on the pads, JP works it square for one

41.3

Khan to Amla, 2 runs, short ball on middle, Amla sets himself for the pull but mistimes the shot. Still gets a couple towards midwicket

41.4

Khan to Amla, 2 runs, Amla moves across outside off and clips this through midwicket for two more.

41.5

Khan to Amla, no run, over-pitched on off and Amla cracks another cover drive. This time, Raina is in the way

Umbrellas are out. There might be some rain in the air.

41.6

Khan to Amla, 1 run, angled into the pads from wide of the crease, Amla somehow gets it out to mid off for one

13.46 Rain has stopped. Play will resume at 14.00, in 14 minutes from now, and will be reduced to 46-overs-a-side. SA will have 4 more overs (of which, we understand, only two more will be Powerplay overs) after which the players will troop out for an innings break that will last 30 minutes. Personally, I find this inexplicably strange - we have poor weather in the air, and the aim must be to get as much action as possible when there is no rain. Won't look very smart if the rains stay off when the players are off and then promptly resumes at some point during India's chase, will it? For the record, India will have to bat at least 20 overs for us to have a game.

13.34 Meanwhile, the covers are playing musical chairs in Centurion. Coming on, going off, and back on. That's the latest.

Here's a stat that underlines South Africa's almost inevitable invincibility in bilateral ODI series at home - They have lost just one since 2002 - last year, against England.

Firdose Moonda sends in this interesting rain update - "It's an odd rain this - coming from cloud around and not directly above the field. And it's getting harder." The pictures do seem to have blue skies, but the rains keep coming down.

Syed: "I reckon SA opted for batting power play, not rain shower play!" Neither did they opt for such word play!

Adam: "RAIN! why oh why? seems to be the theme at the moment. Flooding in Aussie, Rain here at the cricket and flooding outside my house in little old NZ. Where did summer go?"

13.02 Ok, this is frustrating. The rain picks up again and covers come back on.

12.55 Rains stop. Covers come off. Meanwhile, Australia ease to a 3-0 lead against England. Some strife early in the chase, but an easy win in the end. For me the highlight of the game was Brett Lee's spell. 3-27 in eight overs - Binga's gonna be a force in the World Cup. Andy Zaltzman is back with his wit, in his blog as he assesses the action around the world.

12.42 Rain halts play with South Africa well on top. It is spitting heavier now. This could be a substantial break in play. Stay tuned for more.

The Hennops river outside the ground is overflowing! The car park is in grave danger of a deluge, with a couple of cars on the edge. It's pouring down somewhere. And on the ground, it is now heavy enough for the game to be halted.

End of over 42 (8 runs) South Africa 226/3 (RR: 5.38)
HM Amla    111* (124b 9x4)      Z Khan    7-1-42-1
JP Duminy    31* (42b)      MM Patel    6-0-32-0

Munaf resumes.

42.1

MM Patel to Amla, 1 run, full on off stump, Amla opens the face and picks a single through cover point

42.2

MM Patel to Duminy, FOUR, and JP has a boundary at long last. Nothing half-volley outside off, JP steers it nicely through the covers for four. SA on the offensive

42.3

MM Patel to Duminy, OUT, and gone. Munaf hits back. He holds the length back and keeps it on off stump, JP looks to pull and skies a top edge. Munaf recovers well on his follow through, moves to the left of the pitch around the non-striker's end and takes the catch.

JP Duminy c & b MM Patel 35 (65m 44b 1x4 0x6) SR: 79.54

du Plessis is the new man in. Faf, is how I shall refer to him.

42.4

MM Patel to Amla, no run, nice tight line, on middle and leg, Amla can't do much with it

42.5

MM Patel to Amla, 1 run, and now a smart legcutter from Munaf, it stops, grips and goes away from Amla who does well to dab it to the off side for one

42.6

MM Patel to du Plessis, 1 run, Faf is away, tapping a ball on his pads towards mid on for a single

End of over 43 (7 runs) South Africa 233/4 (RR: 5.41)
F du Plessis    1* (1b)      MM Patel    7-0-39-1
HM Amla    113* (127b 9x4)      Z Khan    7-1-42-1

India's PPs will be of 9, 5 and 4 overs each. SA's - 10, 5 and now 3. Here comes the last over of their PP. Zaheer is on.

43.1

Khan to du Plessis, 1 run, angles in from wide of the crease, on the pads and Faf tucks it through midwicket for one more

43.2

Khan to Amla, no run, SA losing crucial momentum here. Zaheer keeps it on a length and it comes into Amla who looks to pull and doesn't connect.

Mind you, there will be a D/L adjustment to India's target. They will chase more than SA's score + 1.

43.3

Khan to Amla, 1 leg bye, slower ball from Zaheer, comes into Amla from outside off and cuts him in half as he tries to play to the leg side. Gets it away for a single to the off side

43.4

Khan to du Plessis, 1 run, Faf jumps out of the crease, it is back of a length outside off and he manages to under-edge it behind point for one

43.5

Khan to Amla, 1 run, 136.6 kph, tight line coming into Amla again, and he misses to time the drive. Another single to the off side

43.6

Khan to du Plessis, 1 run, Faf charges out and gets a ball tailing into his pads. He looks to heave it away, but under-edges it to midwicket for a quick single. Powerplays are done.

End of over 44 (5 runs) South Africa 238/4 (RR: 5.40)
F du Plessis    4* (4b)      Z Khan    8-1-46-1
HM Amla    114* (130b 9x4)      MM Patel    7-0-39-1

44.1

MM Patel to du Plessis, FOUR, and a four off the first ball after the batting PP. There is no third man in place, and Faf manages to get a thick edge to a decentish delivery on off stump that was not there for the drive. Four more.

44.2

MM Patel to du Plessis, OUT, Faf has been Munaf-ed. Adjusts his line, knowing that Faf will look for the off side again, ramrod straight, without drifting on to the pads. Faf charged out, but could not have played any proper shot to that one. He's tried to work it to the off side, but the ball slips past at 135.5 kph and middle stump is out of the ground.

F du Plessis b MM Patel 8 (7m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 133.33

Botha comes in.

44.3

MM Patel to Botha, 2 runs, and gets a double to start off. Another good delivery from Munaf, no room outside off for the cut and not full enough for the drive. and Botha steered it past point and got two.

44.4

MM Patel to Botha, OUT, Munaf is throwing a humongous spanner in South Africa's works here. Another wicket goes down and this is exceptionally smart bowling. Barring the one ball that JP drove through the covers, there's been nothing to drive. This was another delivery back of a length in line with the stumps and Botha had to manufacture a shot. He looked to get forward, and then tried to force the pull, despite not having the room or the length for the shot. He got a top-edge, and Dhoni ran back to collect it.

J Botha c †Dhoni b MM Patel 2 (2m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

44.5

MM Patel to Amla, 1 run, Amla gets another one on the off stump and quietly drops it to the off side for one.

44.6

MM Patel to Peterson, FOUR, Nice shot from Petersen, he's slammed one through the covers as Munaf bowls it full and wide and it is four more.

End of over 45 (11 runs) South Africa 249/6 (RR: 5.53)
RJ Peterson    4* (1b 1x4)      MM Patel    8-0-50-3
HM Amla    115* (131b 9x4)      Z Khan    8-1-46-1

45.1

Khan to Amla, 1 run, Amla takes SA past 250 with an off drive to a very full ball outside off.

45.2

Khan to Peterson, OUT, and India have another one in the end overs. Zaheer delivers the inch-perfect yorker from over the stumps. It was always headed for the base of off stump. Robin backed away, made room and looked to squeeze it away through the off side, but there was no stopping this one. Off stump goes for a walk.

RJ Peterson b Khan 4 (4m 2b 1x4 0x6) SR: 200.00

Steyn walks out. Four to go. SA need to stop losing wickets.

45.3

Khan to Steyn, OUT, Steyn is run out. He chips out of the crease, making room on the off side as he does. Zaheer sees him and follows him, leaving Steyn with no room to play it to the off side. It is through him and Dhoni collects. Steyn tries to steal a single and turn the strike over to Amla, before realising there is no chance for a run. Dhoni runs towards the stumps and throws them down. Five down since resumption.

DW Steyn run out 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

45.4

Khan to Morkel, no run, another yorker, this one is just outside off as the batsman backs away again to the leg side. He ends up leaving it.

45.5

Khan to Morkel, OUT, South Africa have lost the plot. And don't even seem to know it. Morne misses another yorker outside off, and then runs out of his crease mindlessly. Dhoni collects again and throws the stumps down. You miss, you run, I hit - seems to be the routine.

M Morkel run out 0 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

After 42 overs of unimaginative bowling from India, we have four overs of unimaginative batting from SA. One ball to go. Another wicket?

45.6

Khan to Tsotsobe, no run, No! Lopsy plays it out, as he would if he were the nightwatchman playing for stumps. Not a bad idea, its better than throwing your wicket away. Full toss on off stump, he gets behind it and defends to the off side. Zaheer stops the ball. Amla played only two balls in the last four overs!

14.27 Resumption in around 20 minutes. It will be me, Nitin Sundar, bringing you India's chase as well. In the meantime, do check out the ESPNcricinfo toolbar and our Chrome extension.

India will chase 268 in 46 overs. - a tough ask all the same. Steyn and Morkel will be pretty good on this pitch, not to mention Tsotsobe. Half an hour to resumption, time to reflect on a special innings from Amla - cover-driving and late-cutting at their very best through that effort. Sid Ravindran's bulletin, that's getting updated as we speak, captures the essence of the effort.

End of over 46 (1 run) South Africa 250/9
LL Tsotsobe    0* (1b)      Z Khan    9-1-47-2
HM Amla    116* (132b 9x4)      MM Patel    8-0-50-3
