Stats editor Every week the Numbers Game takes a look at the story behind the stats, with an original slant on facts and figures. The column is edited by S Rajesh, ESPNcricinfo's stats editor in Bangalore. He did an MBA in marketing, and then worked for a year in advertising, before deciding to chuck it in favour of a job which would combine the pleasures of watching cricket and writing about it. The intense office cricket matches were an added bonus.

And it could so easily have been much worse - if we hadn't recieved the gift of four overthrows when Guptill took a leg-bye it would have been the 7th lowest innings score of all time. Furthermore, most of the scores lower than this effort of ours were made in the days of uncovered pitches. In defence of our 26 all out, as a freind just pointed out to me, it should also be acknowledged that the NZ team of those days (1955) was basically a bunch of Saturday arvo players up against one of the strongest sides ever to leave England, and who had just very thoroughly cleaned up Australia. The present side is supposed to consist of professional cricketers!
This is an utter catastrophe, and I fear the bright light in the tunnel really is the second innings train coming towards us . . .
In terms of balls, Steyn was second fastest in terms of balls, just 3 behind Waqar. Mohandas Menon tweeted on this site the totals are (balls to 300): Waqar: 12602, Steyn: 12605, Donald: 13690, Marshall 13755, Trueman 14599, Lillee 14942. Amazing.
@udenra, he did the same in England taking 2 x 5fers and 2 x 7 wicket hauls. He also scored a 71 and a 35 with the bat to help SA take the No 1 Test spot.
Posted by Udendra on (January 3, 2013, 4:47 GMT)Agree that Philander is a good bowler, but only in South Africa. He hasn't been effective elsewhere.
Posted by ygkd on (January 3, 2013, 4:34 GMT)A complete debacle by NZ. Australia's batting would never capitulate like that. No, never.... What? It did last year? Really? Oh well, we'd thrash them on the return leg, on proper Ozzie pitches. What? Lost that series last month? Well, I guess then people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
Posted byPhilanders numbers: Five wickets fo(u)r seven runs off six overs with three maidens.
Posted by savageboy on (January 2, 2013, 16:14 GMT)Steyn took 300 wickets by bowling a 1000 less balls in test cricket then the next fastest bowler!!!
Posted by R_U_4_REAL_NICK on (January 2, 2013, 14:36 GMT)The title is very misleading... I don't think the toss would matter a jot in this test. If SA had batted first, we'd simply be reading "steady, but dominant start by SA's batsmen..."
Posted by gjcj on (January 2, 2013, 14:22 GMT)but edwards didn't get a wicket in his first over - his first was a maiden over.
Posted by Plz_Dont_Get_Whitewashed on (January 2, 2013, 13:17 GMT)New Zealand are so pathetic in Tests, they should be removed from the list of Test playing nations!! .... I am sure Ireland would do a better job if given the chance to play Test cricket !!!
Posted by ravikb on (January 2, 2013, 12:51 GMT)Mr. Rajesh, Philander has not taken a wicket in his second over. So your point "Vernon Philander took a wicket in each of his first five overs" is incorrect.
Posted by Voorblad on (January 2, 2013, 12:45 GMT)Philander got 5 wickets in his first 5 overs, but didnt get a wicket in each over. His second over was wicketless.
