New Zealand allrounder Grant Elliott has been named as a replacement for Corey Anderson, who has sustained a fracture to his left thumb, for the ODI series against South Africa.
Anderson was struck on his hand while bowling during practice. He will be in a cast for the next two weeks, thus ending his chances of making his ODI debut on this tour. Anderson played in all three T20s against South Africa last month, scoring 17 runs in two innings and failing to take a wicket.
Elliott, who grew up in Johannesburg, has played five Tests, 37 ODIs and a single T20 for New Zealand but hasn't featured in an international game since December 2010. He has scored four fifties and a century in his ODI career. He has played only once before against South Africa, in the 2009 Champions Trophy.
New Zealand will play three ODIs against South Africa, between January 19 and 25.

Andrew Ellis is out injured, I think he would be first choice for the batting all-rounder slot. Problem at the moment is that in NZ its all T20 - so its hard to pick just who is the in form players. Not sure who else would qualify as a batting all rounder --- maybe they could have gone for Neesham, but i wonder if personality and experience have come in here. By all I've read and heard Elliot is a good guy, with a great work ethic and having him around with his experience may be very useful to this inexperienced squad and a great help for McCullum.
Suddenly Elliot into the mix out of nowhere?! Hope he does justice to his selection.

Considering they are obviously after an allrounder (although it must be said I'm not exactly sure of this current fascination with "bits and pieces" players - they are basically being used at lower order batsmen). Anyway, I would rather Elliot than Franklin, at least you will get some passion and heart, although admittedly his form hasn't been great. Good luck to him if he gets a go.

Elliott did very well during his time with the NZ ODI team, but is no longer half the player he was two or three years ago. This selection is completely at odds with Kim Littlejohn's stated policy of picking on form.

It's makes a mockery of the domestic comp that he can get a look ahead of some of the youngsters who are actually in form. Maybe the selectors don't want to shatter anybody's confidence by throwing them against Steyn & Morkel...
