Mohammad Irfan, Ehsan Adil in Test squad

Fast bowlers Mohammad Irfan and Ehsan Adil are among five players who have been called up to the Pakistan Test squad for the tour of South Africa, which begins at the end of the month. Batsmen Nasir Jamshed and Haris Sohail, and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed were the other inclusions who were not on the Test tour of Sri Lanka in June and July 2012.

The players left out were wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal, fast bowlers Aizaz Cheema and Mohammad Sami, batsman Mohammad Ayub and Afaq Raheem.

Asad Shafiq, who had missed the limited-overs tour to India due to a finger injury, has recovered and is back in the national team. Left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman, who was banned by the ECB during last year's county season for failing a dope Test, also returns to the squad.

Irfan and Jamshed performed impressively in the ODI series in India. Irfan made an impact because of his height, using his seven-foot frame to generate pace and bounce, Jamshed scored two hundreds in three matches and was the Player of the Series. Haris Sohail was part of the ODI squad to India but did not get a game.

Adnan, who has been Pakistan's specialist wicketkeeper and has played 16 Test matches between 2010 and 2012, was reportedly dropped for being unfit. However, Adnan is currently playing the ongoing first-class tournament and has scored 243 runs at 121.50. Interestingly, none of the Akmal brothers - Kamran, Umar and Adnan - feature in the squad.

Adil was part of Pakistan's Under-19 team at the 2012 World Cup Australia, where they made the quarterfinals. Sarfraz last played a Test for Pakistan in 2010, in Hobart. His last ODI was in Colombo in June 2012. He was out of action due to finger injury, but in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy he is the leading wicketkeeper with 13 dismissals.

Pakistan play three Tests in South Africa, in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Centurion. The first Test begins on February 1.

Test squad: Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Azhar Ali, Umar Gul, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, Ehsan Adil, Saeed Ajmal, Adbur Rehman, Haris Sohail, Faisal Iqbal, Taufeeq Umar, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk).

@Sports4Youth firstly don't compare first class stats with international especially test have you seen sarfarazs international stats he has an average of 19 in odis with 4 not outs and a highest score of 46 and in tests he has 6 runs in two innings. The problem is that he will be a disaster because he is not playing on Pakistani pitches he is playing in south Africa against the best pace battery in the world right now

perfect squad but with a little stain of faisal iqbal, but with a squad like that im willing to give him yet another try, good job pakistani selectors

  • on January 14, 2013, 8:03 GMT

Good Selection! Although one pacer is short for three test of South African soil. Good to see no Akmal in the squad. Regarding Adnan Akmal I am totally agreed with @Sports4Youth (Sarfraz-Adnan I compleately dis-agree with you. Please see the first class records of both the players and you will know why. Sarfraz definately deserves a fair opportuninty at the test level. Adnan was given easier assignments on UAE & SRi Lankan pitches. Now Sarfraz has got a difficult assignment on SA pitches, but I am sure he will perform better than Adnan). In Middle order Faisal Iqbal/Haris Sohail one of them should be selected and 5th pacer should be given chance in place of above two.

its good to see akmal brothers

It looks like very unbalanced squad. 1.> Just 4 pacers that also with doubts on fitness of Irfan. 2.> No second wicket keeper. Moreover first choice wicket keeper Adnan Akmal has been dropped out. 3.> 9 batsmen included with no justifying reason behind Taufeeq Umar's and Faisal Iqbal's selection.

It would be too much of ask from Misbah and this team to perform well in SA conditions. Still I wish them best of luck.

Once again Fawad Alam is ignored although he is best cricses player. Pakistan team need specialist and stop experementing with all rounders or a wicket-keeper who can also bat. remember Kamran Akmal lost ius the World Cup in India. Faisal Iqbal is going as a tourist as he will never gets a chance to play. Akmal brothers will be back in the ODI and t-20 teams.

Lets me tell you few guys who dont have any worth in international cricket but still they are getiing chance again and again.. they are Faisal Iqbal, Yasir Arfat, Sohail Tanvir, Aizaz cheemz, Umar Amin and Imran Farhat.. there are few are quaiclky falling in this side are Umar Gul, Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Imran Nazir and Kamran Akmal. I am really happy that selction panel has selected some very talented guys like Nasir Jamshed, Haris Soshail, Junaid Khan, Ehsan Adil and Muhammad Irfan. Azhar, Shafeeq, anwar ali, raza hassan and Umar Akmal are among the one to replace old guns in future. If Ahmad Shahzad can work on his technique he can be among them as well.

Taufeeq umar will most probably falter on high bounce pitches, getting bold of inside edges may be what will happen to Taufeeq, Nasir is the way forward for Pakistan, they need to also go in with three pacers , hold their catches behind the stumps, the gully area will be the key. another selection worry could be Irfan, there is always going to be question mark on his fitness, if he would be able to survive five days of rigorous cricket. the bounce will help Ajmal too and he could he a real threat. Batting is the main area of concern , Misbah, Younis , Asad and Azhar will have to come to the party. In case of a collapse; Sarfaraz's batting would be the key, leaf out of Matt Prior's book. Best of luck to the boys!

    @ ahassan :

Regardig Faisal Iqbal you are right. He is in the team because he is the nephew of Javed Miandad who is the present director, PCB.

@ Khawaja Fahad : Sorry, I dont agree with your comment regarding Adnan-Sarfraz. Please see the batting averages of both the players in the first class matches. Also in the recently concluded tournament Sarfraz was the best wicket keeper with the most number of dissmissals.

Sarfraz has a batting average of 42 in first class matches.

Adnan has a batting average of 24 in first class matches. How can Adnan be a better player than Sarfraz. Sarfraz is getting his first opportunity in Test matches. I am sure he will perform better than Adnan.

  • Sports4Youth on January 13, 2013, 16:37 GMT

@ LillianThomson : Totally agreed with you. Just by using recreational drugs does not make a player tainted. Also he has served the ban imposed on him, now he is clear. Also the other players caught with recreational drugs have got away with light punishment , then why not Abdur Rehman.

After all these are not performance enhancing drugs or banned drugs.

First of all in which universe in sarfaraz ahmed a better keeper or batsman than adnan akmal.Adnan showed real promise with the gloves in all the previous games he played for Pakistan. He showed courage and bravery to walk out and play with a broken hand against srilanka. Sarfaraz has no technique i would be surprised if he manages to have a total of more than 100 runs from these 6 innings.Pakistan has a good bowling attack but i would say the result would be 1-0 in South Africa favor. If they want to win the series they need to play Hafeez(1)Jamsheed(2)Azhar(3)younis(4)Misbah(5)Umer akmal(6)adnan akmal(7)Gull(8)junaid(9)Tanvir ahmed(10)Ajmal(11)

  • ahassan on January 13, 2013, 16:17 GMT

This squad is OK except for two players. One of them is Faisal Iqbal who is a tried and tested failure. Many youngsters have performed better than him in recent President's trophy. Even Imran Farhat who is another tried and tested failure was a better performer than Faisal Iqbal. Umar Amin, the highest scorer of President's Trophy should have been there instead of Faisal Iqbal. Ali Waqas is another youngster whose performance was far better than Faisal. The other player is Sarfraz Ahmed. I have nothing against him but Adnan Akmal should not have been dropped without any reason. His only crime is that he is one of the Akmal brothers. Sad to see Zulfiqar Babar missing out. He was the best bowler of the President's Trophy. He is not there because Abdur Rehman is back and dropping Rehman without any reason would have been injustice to him as is the case with Adnan Akmal. I have a strong feeling that this selections has an element of quota system in it.

@ Alizaali Abdur Rehman is tainted?

Have you forgotten that Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Mushtaq Ahmed were arrested for marijuana possession in Grenada in 1993?

Or that Mohammad Asif continued to be selected by Pakistan after he was deported from the UAE for possession of opium?

Many, many players have a history of marijuana use, from Ian Botham to Stephen Fleming.

to be very honest, you cannot expect something extraordinary from men in green in SAFFIS conditions..but something is for sure that pak bowlerz will enjoy conditions.they will prove to be very handy..batting will struggle surely..pak bowlerz will win many sessions..batting will lead them down..junaid is much improved bowler..Edil is great inclusion..ajmal will be handy.pak will dominate in bowling departmant, saf will dominate in batting department, and simply, result would be in saf favour..

  • ejsiddiqui on January 13, 2013, 8:27 GMT

Don't right off Pakistan, its too early. Pakistan may not have big names but what the have is TEMPERAMENT not to throw their wickets away. Thats the reason we won against the previous No 1 test side. As far as Ajmal is concern, quality bowler is always effective no matter what type of surface is. Pakistan may not have a very good record against SA but this Pak team is a very improved team, So I would not give too much weight to records.

  • on January 13, 2013, 8:22 GMT

Bad selection!Failure Faisal Iqbal would be replaced by talented and President Trophy highest scorer Umer Amin and why Adnan Akmal has been ruled out as calling injured as he made 3 fifties in the last 3 first class matches and why Wahab Riaz has been ruled out?once again Iqbal Qasim has selected mostly Karachi players.

  • on January 13, 2013, 7:54 GMT

its war b/w pak bowling vs saffers batting.saffers batting is formidable never let them down in any test last year or so.pak batsmen can score more or less 200 in every innings of the test match.can Pakistani bowling department have enough power to restrict the saffers batting line which include amla kallis AB du pluesis to a score of 200 or so .this thing will decide the result of the test series in either way 2-1.

    i personally feel this is the best team that Pakistan could select ..... kudos to the selection committee ..... MY team : 1-Hafeez 2-Jamshed 3-azhar 4-younus 5-misbah 6-shafiq 7-sarfaraz 8-umar gul 9-saeed ajmal 10-junaid khan 11-ehsan adil

just vary of irfan fitness for the longer format.....ehsan would be a superhit in the bowling might be the next big thing along with junaid ....he is tall around 6.5 .can get the ball to bounce ..also he can move it well with decent pace ....and very young 19 years

There is news of rift among the selectors and the captain of the Pakistan cricket team over the selection of Sarfaraz Ahmed and Faisal Iqbal. Faisal was selected on recomendation by Javed miandad as he is the director of PCB. But Sarfaraz seledction is justified as he gave excellent performance in domestic cricket. When will a team will be selected simply on merit. Every chairman, selector, captain and coach say the same thing but there is always interference. The selectors didn't select Irfan and shoaib for the ODI but they were late inclusion because of their performance in t-20.

I am from Bangladesh, but I support Pakistan cricket team. i try not to miss any match of Pakistan. since Pak is traveling to South Africa, in my opinion the best Test Squad is: Hafeez, Jamshed, Azhar Ali, Mibah, O or K akmal, shafiq, Junaid, Irfan, Anwar ali, ehsan adil, gul. maybe we can skip adil and bring ajmal. but south africa is a fast paced pitch, so spinners wont make diff. we can take out shafiq and put shoaib malik since he is an all rounder. but pakistan needs to keep junaid and irfan no matter what. they have to be well trained before world cup. if Bangladesh dont win the world cup, i want Pakistan to win. i hope Amir gets back, then pakistan is the strongest team. pakistan needs Amir and mohammed yousuf. one of the best batsmen. i dont like younus khan. anyway for SA, we need a lot of fast bowlers, maybe this will be Gul's type pitch. Good Luck to Pakistan team. please Bat well, and bowlers will do their job. may Allah bless your team and makes it more stronger.

I found it funny that people are already writing Pak off even Pak fans, oh well keep underestimating Pak many have in the past and they always end up looking like fools. Yes i know SA is a great team they are fav to win and i also know that our batting lineup is our weak link but still we in top 4, and the so called great batting line at 5 who couldn't score runs to save they lives in Eng, Aus and at home. Anyway i want the fans from both sides to respect each other during the series and let the players do their job, even if Pak lose at least we'll go down to the best team in the world and same goes for SA even if they lose they don't have to b ashamed bcoz they will go down to the most talented team in the world. I think faisal Iqbal doesnt deserve to be in the many chances is he gonna get???....and Ehsan adil is still hasnt played enough cricket to be the part of the squad..Although Its a pretty good selection overall..thanks Allah they have get rid of kamran akmal!!

  • wakaPAK on January 12, 2013, 17:57 GMT

South Africa is the best team, I agree, Amla, Smith, Kallis, DeVilliers, Faf everyone is the best and it's SA where we are playing but still I'd back my team; I believe in my team. Inshallah, we will win!

  • Sports4Youth on January 12, 2013, 17:41 GMT

Regarding the questions being raised about Ajmal performing in foreign conditions, I think Ajmal had already proved himself touring the 2010 tour or England. Since then he has performed well in WI etc. I think he will do well.

  • avmd on January 12, 2013, 16:55 GMT

Adnan Akmal, the best WK in Pak has been performing exceptionally well with gloves and has been contributing well with bat also, dropped ??? Faisal Iqbal is in the team for the same reason, as was Imran Farhat, family conections. Team is a fit and pacy fast bowler short, Wahab should have been in the team. Just 4 FBs, two uncapped, one under 19 and other's testmatch fitness doubtfull. If batsmen had to be picked, Umar Amin or Salahuddin ( lahore) should have been picked ahead of Faisal. Good opportunity for Junaid and Jamshed to raise their status, as world class. With Irfan's fitness in doubt, Ehsan will make debut in 2nd or 3rd test. Harrris Sohail wil also debut in 3rd test, as by then many of the other batsmen would have been failed.

  • SamRoy on January 12, 2013, 16:48 GMT

Younis Khan will definitely fail. I think Hafeez, Jamshed, Azhar and Shafiq can average 25+. Whether they will or will not, I don't know. Pakistan's bowling doesn't have a good fast bowling partner for Junaid. That might be a problem. If there was Amir and Asif I would have predicted 2-1 for SA or may be even 1-1; now I am not sure. I think SA will win comfortably. If that tall fellow can bowl well Pakistan might win a test.

  • warneneverchuck on January 12, 2013, 16:48 GMT

no more cricket for misbah because he is old & recently form is not good...versus india he was super flop.

  • on January 12, 2013, 16:40 GMT

  • on January 12, 2013, 16:37 GMT

combination would be 6 batsmen 1 wk 1 spinner and 3 fast bowlers...misbah younis azhar and hafeez are probably gng to play all the 3 test matches which means 2 out of jamshed, taufiq, asad, faisal and haris will play alongwith the 4 who are sure to play...that makes 5 batsmen for 2 spots .. ridiculous !!!

  • on January 12, 2013, 16:37 GMT

pak will apply safety first in the 1st test and play 6 batsmen, 1 allrounder (hafiz) 1 wk & 3 bowlers and they will get burned. so this will be pak side : taufeeq, jamshed. azhar, younus, misbah, asad, hafiz, sarfraj, gul, ajmal & junaid. if sa wins the toss & bat, pak might get few wkts early on but because of thin bowling not much help for spinners on day 1, sa will score around 350 for 3/4. because of heavy workload one of the fast bowlers will break down and sa will score 500+ and declare and win by innings. if pak win and bat first they will be all out by tea with less than 200, sa 500+ and innings defeat. for the 2nd & 3rd test because of them being scared in the 1st test they would have lost one of their premium bowlers, so no chance of making a comeback.

  • Sports4Youth on January 12, 2013, 16:34 GMT

Pakistan drew the series agaist SA in UAE late of 2010. Beat England 3-0 in UAE. Since then two things will be different this time. One against them & one in their favor.

    1. Now they will be playing in foreign conditions. Some of the Pakistani younsters will be seing the South African conditions and pitches for the first time.

    2. Now Pakistan is a much more improved side. The batting looks is little more stable. Bowling is more effective. The Only thing that unlike the UAE, this time Pakistan will have to play with 3 fast bowlers and one specialist spinner. So their Pace attack will be tested. Junaid has improved. Much is expected of Irfan & Gul better performs this time or else he may become one more Umar to be shown the door.

A few of my indian friends here are arguing against pakistani fragile batting line up and there over rated batting. mates, there bowling for sure is awesome as they troubled and knocked out the best batting sides in the world recently. there batting has become good and getting better because they are having green tops in there domestic circuit these seasons and are therefore getting good new batters. like jamshed look out for harris sohail...he i s a compact and awesome player. this present pakistanis team has the ability to beat SA at there out! cric info please publish

9 batsmen 2 spinners 1 wk and jst 4 fast bowlers. 2 of the 4 are uncapped in test cricket (irfan & ehsanl)...also irfan cannot sustain the pressure of long spells in test cricket ... if he gets injured (there are all the chances that he would) and therz an out of form fast bowler (umar gul has been out of form for most part of the last 2 years) then wat we do? play 2 spinners and 2 fast bowlers on bouncy and seaming tracks?this bowling attack can be gud for pitches in UAE but we definitely need another fast bowler to replace 1 of the 9 batsmen...wat abt anwar ali and asad ali???both hav done v well in domestic this year !! y not 1 of them to replace faisal iqbal...selection committee really has some problems...1st they selected a wrong combination for odis against india then they had to change it and now again we r gng to SA with just 3 fast bowlers bcz irfan with his fitness surely is not a test material to test the technically sound batsmen who are used to playing on bouncy tracks !

  • Stark62 on January 12, 2013, 16:11 GMT

@ the fans slating Pak's batting line up; you guys are MASSIVELY underrating the current Pak batting line up.

Remember, Pak won a match in Eng and drew a series against Aus in Eng. During those series', the batting line up was composed of mere kids and an out of form Yousuf but yet they still won matches.

Pak don't need all six of the batsmen to click, we just need 5 out of the 6 to make 30's or one gets a hundred and the rest chip in because Pak's bowling line up will be a real handful for SA.

  • Cric_info_pak on January 12, 2013, 16:00 GMT

@saadrock pakistan beat england by 3-0 which sa even can't do it in own country ... and same pakistan draw the series agaisnt SA as well .... so it is even i think pakistan will not lose by 3-0 may be 2-0 or 2-1 but not 3-0.. or may be they wil beat SA so far they did not face quality attack for some time...... ( england and Austriala attack is not as strong like pakistan) got both spin and fast bowler....

Adnan didn't do anything wrong in his keeping that they've dropped him...How many more chances will Sarfraz get ? -_____________-

  • dontlikecricket on January 12, 2013, 15:26 GMT

Come on people, dont worry about Faisal Iqbal, he is not even going to make in playing 11. With regards to Adnan Akmal, it may have to do with Akmal brothers politics. Also Sarfraz first class average is much better than Adnan and he is taller so will be able to keep better on the bouncy wickets. Misbah will need to protect Irfan by giving him max of 4/5 over spells. As Pak have got Ajmal and also Hafeez, it will assist in fast bowlers being kept fresh as they both will take the bowling pressure off the others. Ajmal is a legend he can bowl 30 plus overs in a day without loosing control / quality of his bowling!!!!

  • SaadRocx on January 12, 2013, 15:20 GMT

My Prediction is...3-0 in Tests ,in favor of SA and 3-2 in ODI'S again in favour of SA...Even England and Australia cant handle SA at their home soils..and it would be a joke if you think of even drawing the series in SA...Pak batting line up is soooo weak and vulnerable....There is a possibility for Pak to win the ODI series...but in Tests....NO CHANCE!!!!!!

congratulation Team Pakistan for not having Akmal Brothers in team..... i do feel for Adnan.... But Akmal brother are more good politicians then Players if any one is dropped other brother will not perform automatically.... Umar Akmal is not performing from quite a while and always got out playing silly shot. So he is well dropped for test series.... Kamran Akmal is also well dropped because one catch dropped of Amla or De villers you dropped match.....

  • Zahidsaltin on January 12, 2013, 14:46 GMT

In the bowling department, people are forgetting presence of Ajmal and Hafiz. I think Hafiz will be very handy in those conditions. Pakistan's biggest worry is being to see of the new ball and no. 6 batsman is going to be the main factor. Asad Shafiq is to weak on a batting spot which has to score a bulk of runs. It is on this batting spot that south Africa bowling pressure eases a bit. May be Faisal Iqbal will be a better choice now as we have him in the squad but I had surely prefered Ayub Dogar. Philander is a more refind make of B. kumar whome we saw destroying the pak batting line in a match where the ball was swinging. Azhar Mahmood irrespective of score will need to occupy it for 20 overs or so.

  • Kak-mal_Khan on January 12, 2013, 14:15 GMT

@ Umar Riaz - seems like you want to play one-day cricket in Test Match Arena. Truth is that Pak line-up need to have solid players like Misbah (do not discount him for Test cricket) in this series, Umar Akmal would be easy picking for Steyn & Philander - I would have loved for Umar Akmal to have flourished since his impressive start in the Test game, but he himself must realise his performances have been mediocre since, when was his last Test century? I do however not understand the exclusion of Adnan Akmal, consistently good behind the stumps and good temprement for Test match batting, was definately progressing well, unfortunately for him the Akmal name has been tarnished by his gremlin sibblings - Sarfraz is not as bad as some posts seem to suggest, but defnately the Test experience of Adnan over Sarfraz combined with Adnan's recent form behind the stumps, should NOT have displaced him for this very tough series!

  • on January 12, 2013, 14:03 GMT

First Akmal-free team in a decade........However South Africa will be a tough opposition and may win the test series 3-0 , I am expecting the bowlers specially Junaid to perform............but cant be said about the batsman except for Younis and maybe Azhar...............

  • on January 12, 2013, 13:55 GMT

Only four seamers in the squad and two of them are uncapped and juniad has only played few tests...this is the biggest worry pak may face in front of smith, almla, kallis, du plessis, devilliers etc...

  • on January 12, 2013, 13:48 GMT

They should have picked Anwer Ali insteadd of faisal Iqbal,I don't think Rehman was a need for this tour as Hafeez and Ajmal are good enough to fulfill spiners job so WAHAB/SAMI could have been a batter opption,Not sure about Sarfraz as i think Adnan did well as wk and he is charactor witch is fun to be around.Tufeeq Umer has been tried before bu failed and am sure result ll be the same this time too.We are 2 pacers short Irfan's fitness ll be an issue too.I hope it ll be a good seriouse as all eyes on AJMAL vs AMLA encounter but i predict an easy win for SA.

  • venkatesh018 on January 12, 2013, 13:13 GMT

I don't know much about the new comers who did not play in this India ODI series and have been picked for S Africa. But they have dropped the right people. Especially Mohammad Sami is uselss for Internatioanl cricket.

Faisal Iqbal again, O yes, Javed Miandad"s nephew, right? Should been kind to those who did not get any chance before. Will the big man bowler remain fit for all tests?

  • on January 12, 2013, 12:44 GMT

@Asad Kamran Shaikh : After-all Faisal Iqbal's uncle Javed Miandad is DG PCB.

    Fresh Faces. Young Blood.

Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Younis Khan,Abdur Rehman, Faisal Iqbal, Taufeeq Umar, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk).

Where is Umar Akmal? He deserved a place far more than any of the above expired players.

Sarfaraz Ahmad is a pathetic player. Adnan Akmal should have been preferred, if the management had any brain cells.

  • on January 12, 2013, 11:48 GMT

This time south africa going to whitewash the pakistan team due to the poor and very average batting lineup of pak. So the prediction for the series 3-0 in test series and 4-1 in favour of rsa . Mark my words only junaid and may be jamshed will perform

  • sanjhype on January 12, 2013, 11:20 GMT

Just the bowlers team, adnan akmal , afaq raheem, also deserves a chance. Why faisal iqbal because his uncle is director of cricket board.batting is very weak they will not perform in south african conditions.

why is fawad alam being constantly overlooked... hope the selectors get some sense, however overall its a good squad they have selected

  • cooldxve on January 12, 2013, 10:13 GMT

What is the reason for picking new players if you are afraid to try them? Even after taking an unassailable lead in a series they don't give chance to the new players in the remaining matches. Recently we saw that in the ODI series against India. After taking a 2-0 lead in the series they could have easily rested the senior players and could have played many new ones. This is a serious problem because they drop players who has not even played.

  • on January 12, 2013, 9:53 GMT

faisal Iqbal should not be included he has been given many chances but nothing came from it

  • on January 12, 2013, 9:49 GMT

Any team is better without Akmal brothers. They are good for ODI and T20 not for a test match. There were many hopes from Umar Akmal but he has had too many chances to prove but he has failed. He is a good player but irresponsible and inconsistant. Also troublemaker in the dressing room.

  • matchfixerpkn on January 12, 2013, 9:42 GMT

good for Ehsan Adil .will get perfect pitch to start career.. and mohammed irfan will not succeed in s afrca..i feel s african batmas will love playing aganst irfan... there is not to worry on bowling bcos ajmal is the one will decide bowling unit capability..not the fast bolwers.. but biggest worry is batting..... and ofcouse marathon man amla kallis...

  • on January 12, 2013, 9:37 GMT

i think faisal iqbal doesnt deserve a chance. He has been tried many times and didnt do that much well. Wahab riaz should be in the squad as we need more fast bowlers on south africian tracks. Inclusion of Adil , nasir and harris sohail is encouraging. Adana Akmal has been dropped. Dont kow why. He was good with gloves , may be because of his batting.!!

  • Tamimfan on January 12, 2013, 9:09 GMT

  • FRRR on January 12, 2013, 9:08 GMT

  • Professor.Biscuit.Khan on January 12, 2013, 9:08 GMT

@ Born2WatchCricket - LOL. Nice comment regarding Pak's batting. But its not as weak as you think. Except Misbah and Azhar Ali, I don't see any batsman even crossing 50. And the over-hyped Jamshed might have scored tons against Ind recently but he was clearly uncomfortable against B. Kumar who was swinging the ball both ways. SO thinking that, he would do the same against Steyn, Philander, Kallis and Morkel who consistently swing the ball with pace, is nothing but deceiving yourself. Now comes Younis Khan, he too was uncomfortable against Swing bowling in India. Lets see if rises to the occasion, I doubt though. As I said before, only Misbah and Azhar can give some fight. And where's that guy who puts green cream on his lips and looks ugly ... yes Umar AKmal, he didn't even get selected lol. some of the pak fans were calling him the 'World's Best Young Batsman' and even comparing him with Kohli lol. good one PCB, these guys shld learn discipline first. 3-0 or 2-1 in favour of SA.

  • JustTalkCricket on January 12, 2013, 9:07 GMT

Team does'nt look sloid on paper to give sllepless night to SA. If these guys can manage to put up reasonable total on the board bowlers are good enough to make a match out of it though SA favourite all the way.

  • Pathan.777 on January 12, 2013, 8:58 GMT

good squad.. just one error i think.. there should have been saddaf hussain for faisal iqbal.. other wise a balanced side. no need ov 2 extra middle oder batters.. and also i dnt thnk there will be need of 2 spinners in SA conditions.. Any how good job by selectors..

  • on January 12, 2013, 8:57 GMT

I think its a great opportunity for Sarfaraz as he has no pressure of the Akmal Brothers in this series, he should perform well. Faisal Iqbal and Muhammad Irfan are the only weak links in this squad and Wahab Riaz should have been given a chance. Have heard alot about Ehsan Adil good luck to him!

  • Sharjeel77 on January 12, 2013, 8:38 GMT

Very glad that umar and kamran are left out. Why adnan as well? The most shocking inclusion is faisal iqbal. It seems that if the selection team does something good they have to balance it out with a cock-up!

  • wnwn on January 12, 2013, 8:36 GMT

Still no proper wicket batsman in the test team which is a major disadvantage for Pakistan. I can't see anything other than a clean sweep for SA but i would pick this team: Jamshed, Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Younis, Misbah, Shafiq, Sarfraz, Gul, Ajmal, Junaid, Ehsan Adil.

  • on January 12, 2013, 8:29 GMT

This is a very un balanced team with a very less experienced fast bowling attack. Umar Gul Only is the experienced bowler who is not as good in tests as he is in the shorter version of the game. The selectors have missed wahab riaz, aizaz cheema..there are only four semaers in squad and irfan fitness is always doubtful for tests.

sarfraz may be a good option but why faisal iqbal is given a chance again and again...what he has done ???? Best of Luck..

  • on January 12, 2013, 8:28 GMT

I thin k it is arguably the best selection one could do for SA Test Series. But it can be even better if they would have included one more fast bowler (Wahab Riaz or Tanveer Ahmed) either in place of Faisal or they could select 17 members as it'll be a long tour and MoIrfan can be injury-prone as he's not the fittest one in the side. Good to see the new talent Ehsan Adil as he performed really well on flat tracks in President's Trophy and also he got the experience of bowling on SA tracks because he toured there with U-19's. Pak bowling-outfit is looking really great and I'm very much hopeful for MoIrfan that he will get through the rigors of test cricket. So first test match will really be a treat and perhaps it will also decide where the series is heading towards. Good Luck Team Pak ! ! ! May ALMIGHTY bless us with first test-series-win in SA !

  • remnant on January 12, 2013, 8:27 GMT

Akmal's have suspect dedication to the team objectives. They always fall short at those big moments, when a hand needs to be raised up. Anyone remembers the last time an Akmal raised his hand to win a match, or even got a MoM award. I think not. Its good that none of them is there in the squad as dropping one and leaving another only leads to further sabotage and injury intrigues from these characters. They are a bad case for siblings playing cricket, and their legacy would mean that future sibling prospects would be judged through their antics! During this time away, they should try becoming the players who can be counted when its needed!

  • Zakzingzang on January 12, 2013, 8:27 GMT

The exclusion of Akmal Brothers is to save their International careers. They will have enough time to plan their future matches BALL BY BALL so in whichever match they play would have maximum HIGHS & LOWS!!!

  • shahzadparacha on January 12, 2013, 8:21 GMT

Adnan Akmal is fit and performing very well.

Looks like Lahore players are being deliberately not selected and ordinary players like Faisal Iqbal who averges 26 after 27 test matches played over last 10 years is preferred. His domestic performances have been very ordinary for the last 2 years and has been selected as Government wants to please MQM.

  • qaser on January 12, 2013, 8:10 GMT

  • Syed_imran_abbas on January 12, 2013, 8:08 GMT

  • on January 12, 2013, 7:48 GMT

Akmal, the punjabi brothers are out, what a relief for Pakistan, as they only perform for PUNJAB not PAKISTAN. Faisal Iqbal should be banned because he constantly makes his place because of his famous uncle, Javed Miandad. Fawad Alam or someone better than Faisal Iqbal should be selected. We should protest against PCB selection committee too.

  • on January 12, 2013, 7:35 GMT

A perfect team. Only one change required. Mohammad Yousuf should be there in place of Faisal Iqbal. @@ Umar Riaz@@ Umar Akmal is not in great form. He doesn't deserved for the test team either.

  • Nadeem1976 on January 12, 2013, 7:04 GMT

good test team but we will not be able to perform in SA due to fast bouncy pitches. Our bowlers may be able to get some wickets but we are playing against #1 team in the world who are in great form. no hopes.

I hope pakistan able to draw this series some how. it will be great.

  • Solid_Snake on January 12, 2013, 6:45 GMT

I dont understand why is everybody asking to let Adnan play instead of Sarfaraz.. Have you seen the FC Avg of both?Sarfaraz looks amazing with a double Century in his bag & a whopping Avg of 42..Adnan comes no where near..Adnan played test matches but his Avg is bad..Sarfaraz always was a better choice

  • wakaPAK on January 12, 2013, 6:38 GMT

If Irfan plays, I'm sure he must have been tested; this guy should have bowled in FC in difficult conditions at home; we should trust him and put our faith in his abilities and back him up for the big occasion. I think his inclusion is very vital to the team to unsettle the batsmen making it easy for an accurate bowler to take the wickets at the other end. Even if he does not take wickets, he should be there in the squad as long as he keeps up baffling the batsmen. I'd have liked a right arm bowler to open on the other end with Irfan instead of Junaid to test the batsmen from two different angles but given the class of Junaid, I'd not worry too much about it. PS @ Kiwirocker : it's always a treat to read your comments, you rock brother!

  • Solid_Snake on January 12, 2013, 6:36 GMT

@Aina Maria Waseem->Totally Agree with you.. Our batsmen did well in last tour to SA..Lost the series but at least we won a test match.Similarly we did well in last tour of NZ..Their Pace attack might not be as good as the Proteas but still considering the Alien conditions,we played Great :) InshaAllah our batsmen would make their country proud..

  • Last_ride on January 12, 2013, 6:21 GMT

As a Saffer and not knowing a lot about Pakistan team i sincerely hope this series could go down to the wire. However despite the so called greatness of Pakistans Bowling attack. South Africas batting is more then well equipped to deal with that. But for Pakistan to have any chance there batting has to click. With there batting line up i really dont think they will even cross 200 in any of the Innings. As i see it Sa 3 pakistan 0

  • mazdonal on January 12, 2013, 6:09 GMT

The first sensible thing that they have done is to leave Kamran Akmal out. his stunning catch to dismiss Kohli is not enough to keep him in the side, considering his abysmal batting. His nice guy image is belied by his actions. Moreover he was born with the smile.

  • krshah on January 12, 2013, 6:02 GMT

I am not surprised by the announcements made for the test tour to SA. As usual the players who were with the squad from the india tour shouold have had first preference. In particular i am referring to fast bowler Anwar Ali. Jus like Eshan Adil coming from the under 19 squad with a better pedigree and record. Isnt experince what pakistan have been relying on for the past few years. South Africa is not forgiving for these young bowlers or batsmen. Why give up on Adnan Akmal? He has been pretty decent with the gloves and nothing stands out in Sararaza's batting to say he is abetter choice. The selectors have missed the trick, continuity and following a set pattern is what was needed. Best of luck to them

  • ishrat1971 on January 12, 2013, 6:00 GMT

I Agree with Pak_Tigers that Irfan may not be a great choice for fast bowling as a test bowler you wil need him to bowl closer to twenty overs a day over a longer period of time.... The better choice would have been to play Wahab Riaz or try one of the rookies

  • Akhter786 on January 12, 2013, 5:54 GMT

    @sir pak78

Amla does not make centuries against petty bowling attacks he makes them against the best bowling sides against four express bowlers at perth at a strikerate of 95. Surely he will torment pakistan, he is the best and there is no doubt

  • Tmalik on January 12, 2013, 3:57 GMT

Shame to Pak Selectors, PCB specially Zaka and Iqbal Qasim for once again ignoring Muhammad Yousuf, the legend... they are proving that they will continue disrespecting the experienced players and their services to the country. Yousuf deserved to be picked up for this series. Younus did nothing special in India yet in the team. Yousuf is legend and holds good record against SA as well as for Pak. PCB seems to not learn from other boards who handle their experienced players so well... i dont see this battling line up has any consistency, we saw it in India, Misbah, Azhar, Younis all in poor form yet given to hold the middle order. this is Rubbish,... I hope Yousuf continues playing domestic cricket and performs which would be slap on selectors and PCB, we are with you Mohammad Yousuf.......

  • Atifkhan3489 on January 12, 2013, 3:54 GMT

I would prefer ihsan adil to mohammad irfan.both are tall but irfan has not stemna of playing 5 day game so pace attack should b gul ,junaid and ihsan adil other team is unchanged only replacement is sarfraz with adnan but adnan hadn't done wrong.

faisal iqbal again? how many chances will he get?

  • cricpolitics on January 12, 2013, 0:53 GMT

As usual I smell politics again. There was no reason to drop Adnan Akmal from the test team since he has been performing consistently and look at his performance in the local competition. I am not surprised why Sarfaraz is being picked since Iqbal Qasim is playing his biased role here. Sarfaraz has been given chances before and he did not show much promise.

  • boomboomrazzaq on January 12, 2013, 0:31 GMT

I think it is very good that Pakistan have decided to bring many fresh faces into the squad at last. I feel that whilst Irfan does have the pace and height, his fitness certainly does need some considerable improvement. However, the inclusion of Haris Sohail is very encouraging as well as Jamshed within this squad. Both are very talented and I think it important that they are integrated into the team, especially in relation to the 2015 World Cup as well. Ehsan Adil finally getting a call up is also very encouraging as ever since I saw him in the U-19 WC I thought highly of him and I think his hard work and effort will, INSHALLAH, pay off. Sarfraz Ahmed being included is also very good considering he has a very good FC batting average (40 odd I believe) and I think he might finally provide some backbone to a brittle lower order. INSHALLAH Pakistan will win this forthcoming series and show that it is a strong outfit away from home against the worlds best team on paper.

  • PAKCOP on January 12, 2013, 0:03 GMT

So happy to see some tough calls made by selectors. No Akmals is such a relief for me as they all play for each other not for their county. Great selection. Go Team Green, lets beat SA in their home.

droping kamran akmal seems to be a wise dicision... his performance in india was below par... but it seems strange that for such an important and demanding tour selectors have picked only four fast bowlers and out of these four there are question marks over the durability of irfan and ihsan adil has no experience... i think better choices would have been tanvir ahmad and izaz cheema...

  • mikey76 on January 11, 2013, 23:18 GMT

They might give SA the odd scare here and there, but with only Younis Khan of any pedigree in the top 6 it might be a struggle to get runs on the board. Should be an interesting series, nice to see how Ajmal does on bouncy surfaces and if Rehman can trouble the saffers like he did England. 2-0 South Africa.

  • on January 11, 2013, 23:08 GMT

What has Adnan Akmal done wrong ? I think he was really good. I think whenever KAkmal does not perform , people start thinking bad about all the brothers which is unfair. good to see Asad back .He deserves a spot in Tests and Tests only. But is he doesn't perform upto the mark too I think the selectors should give Harris sohail or Umar Amin a long go as they are far more talented. The biggest question of them all what is Faisal Iqbal doing in the squad ? I just checked the record so there are alot of others who have done FAR better than him but I guess their uncle is not DG PCB.

  • on January 11, 2013, 23:05 GMT

This team will be doomed. Very biased selection. Adnan, Umar Akmal and Wahab should have been included in the squad. Adnan is much better batsman and keeper than sarfraz. Recent recod proves that. There is no place for Faisal Iqbal, Taufeeq Umar, Younas Khan and Misbah. Their recent record is very poor and they will flop on bouncy tracks. Asad Shafiq is a good batsman but he also has issues with short balls. Umar Akrmal is the best player on bouncy tracks. His record in NZ and Aus proves that. Irfan is a bad choice as well. He is very unfit and can barely bowl 10 overs in ODIs. THIS TEAM IS DOOMED. I'll support SA

  • david44 on January 11, 2013, 22:37 GMT

hasan raza is missing i think like england is poor against spin he has shown lot of promise and bowels with confidence@ aaqib ali i agree with your test selection a mixture of experience and young talent specially batting dept.Jamshed, azher, asad will learn a lot from this tour.

  • likeintcricket on January 11, 2013, 22:23 GMT

Umer Akmal is a better player of fast bowling than many and he could be a very handy player. But he is unreliable and maybe there are other issues with the Akmal brothers too as all of them are dropped. Pakistan could loose to South Africa as most of the Indian friends are suggesting but they will go down fighting. It is true that Pakistan does not possess quality batsman but the selected players are technically better players of fast bowling than Indians and they can handle the bouncers. They might loose some Test matches against the #1 side of the world but they certainly cannot loose 8 Test matches in a row and break Indians record.

Generally the team combination is good. With no bench strenght available the selectors have ensured that Gul gets to play in Every match. Ideally I would have preferred Sadaf or Rahat in Place of young Adil. We dont expect a 19 yr old to be given an opportunity in such a tough series. So Gul is most likely to play all games. Ideally I would also like to see Haris Sohail get some opportunities in the XI. But presently it appears that he will get an opportunity only if any batsmen gets injured.

I agree with people who say that faisel iqbal is in only becase of jawad. other then that it looks oke. i feel for adnan as he has not done anything wrong. but i like the way sarfarz play.

Pakistan's selection commitee is showing what Indian toothless selectors can not do! They are making some tough calls. I am unsure if Irfan's fitness but even he could bowl short spells of 4-6 overs, Pakistan will be well served as he is an impact player. Sarfraz is Pakistans best wicket keeper by miles. The problem has been his batting. He needs to show he is a better batsman. Adnan Akmal is not bad and actually out of all Akmals. he is the sensible one. I am looking forward to see Ehsan Adil.Pakistan has all sorts of bowling options now,e.g Fast, swing, tall, mystery spinner and a left arm spinner. The real key is Pakistani batting. I am pleased to see Harris Sohail being retained by feel bit sorry for Ayuf and Afaq as they should have been given chance to play. There is one player that should have been in the team.Khurram Manzoor is Pakistan's technically correct batsman and I feel he is being wasted like Asim Kamal.Faisal Iqbal is not bad but Khurram Scored a superb 77 against OZ!

  • on January 11, 2013, 21:55 GMT

i am very happy with our team combinations and balance....we have openers with a solid technique and can get pakistan to good solid starts in the tests...then we have a solid looking middle order with azhar, younis, misbah and asad shafiq...i feel adnan akmal had done well with the keeping gloves but sarfraz isnt a bad choice either...then we have the worlds best spinner ajmal in our ranks...who is followed by gul as the experienced fast bowler..irfan the tall ,fiery fast bowler and the young talented, express fast bowler junaid....this should be the starting eleven for the test series...with adil, taufeeq, and other talented players waiting in the wings...great team...lets make history team pakistan...

  • FRRR on January 11, 2013, 21:53 GMT

  • Surajdon9 on January 11, 2013, 21:49 GMT

  • pak78 on January 11, 2013, 21:42 GMT

good team selection go greenz cant wait............... at last south africa will face a world class bowling attack so sir amla make most of your centuries against petty bowling attacks get ready for the real test.

  • on January 11, 2013, 21:39 GMT

Irfan being handle-with-care and the pace-friendly wickets that are likely, Ehsaan might end up playing. @Solid_Snake: Wait for the series to end, by when, Insha Allah, Azhar, Younis, Misbah and Asad will have done Pakistan proud. Don't waste time arguing with those who so seriously lack in cricketing knowledge as to cast aspersions over the best batsmen in the side, the very people who allowed our bowlers to cleansweep England. @Umar Akmal fans: I was obviously watching a different series, one in which he couldn't chase down 160 odd, with less than run a ball required till almost the end. I'm sure we would have won if Azhar hadn't been rested.

  • on January 11, 2013, 21:38 GMT

Adnan Akmal should have been included in the squad, its a complete failure on the selectors part. He is clearly the best glove man in the country and in test matches at least you need a pure keeper who is capable of taking all chances, even more so when the team you are facing is hands down the best team in the world. Anyways here's my playing xi: Hafeez, Taufiq, Azhar, Younis, Misbah, Harris/Asad, Sarfaraz, Gul, Ajmal, Junaid, Irfan.

  • khurramsch on January 11, 2013, 21:30 GMT

Overall good team. Adnan akmal hasn't done anything bad but ok to test sarfraz. Only 1 thing they have selected 9 batsmen, 1 keeper 2 spinners, and only 4 fast bowlers. Its sa, & I think only ajmal will be ok, there is no place for rehman in playing 11 if ajmal is fit. Best will be to play with 3 fast bowlers. I am not sure about irfan's test fitness. In odi's his 2nd spells lack I think haris sohail & nasir should get any chance in olaying 11.

  • PAK_TIGERS on January 11, 2013, 21:29 GMT

Irfan can barely do 10 overs. I think its a wrong call to let him play in TEST, dont get me wrong he did a fine job in limited overs BUT he is NOT fully fit. They will lose a good talent by letting him play in test. I ca bet on this. Just check his second and third ODI he was dragging his feet after 4 overs. Good that they got rid of Akmal brothers . umar and kamran only good for T20. Azhar ali and asad shafiq good call. Nasir good but need to be careful not to get a big head and have ego problem since he is young and I dont think he got a mentor yet.

  • on January 11, 2013, 21:29 GMT

This is a very balanced Squad, the only week link is the wicket keeping department as Adnan Akmal is far more superior as far as technique and usefulness is concerned...

Irfan will be the most likely debutant as Junaid, Ajmal, GUl will be the other 3 bowlers.... Hafeez,Azhar,Misbah,Younis,Asad,Junaid,Ajmal,Gul,Sarfaraz are confirm picks....Irfan will be the 10th person for sure and Out of Taufeeq and Jamshed, Taufeeq will get the chance team for the first test will be "HAFEEZ, TAUFEEQ, AZHAR,YOUNIS,MISBAH,ASAD,SARFARAZ,GUL,AJMAL,JUNAID,IRFAN""

If irfan and Asad didn't performed, they won't be replaced, but if taufeeq failed, Jamshed will get the chance in next match... So its more likely, that EHSAN ADIL, Abdur Rehman,Haris Sohail and Faisal Iqbal wont get a match...unless injuries ...

  • on January 11, 2013, 21:23 GMT

First Akmal free team. Basit Ali was right. This selection committee indeed has some spine. Congratulations to Pakistan for first ever merit-based team.

  • aarifboy on January 11, 2013, 21:21 GMT

  • on January 11, 2013, 21:06 GMT

Good team apart from faisal iqbal i think he had manhy chances there was a choice between rahat ali and ehsan adil rahat was quike than ehsan but as there r other two left armers junaid and irfan right hand fast was rightly prefered

  • a.syed81 on January 11, 2013, 20:57 GMT

Misbah Should and must give chance of Nasir, Haris and Ehsan because it's 3 test series. Atleast in one test, I'll prefer the last test so these young kids will not be under pressure. For God Sake Misbah don't repeat the same mistake which you did in last ODI in India. If you had to loose then why not loose with your young blood. Atleast they will get a chance to learn.

Happy News is to read that the Akmals are dropped. But the inclusion of faisal Iqbal is a Mystery case! Fawad alam has a Lot of experience and Patient to Play Test Matches! What about Abdur Rehman? He has taken Drugs, but is still in the national squad. Is that what we want to Show our youth in Pakistan? Shame Shame! Zulfiqar babar should be in the Team! Wahab and sadaf should be also in the Team, becaue Umar gul and Irfan dont fit in the Test Format! Good Luck Pakistan!!!!

  • dontlikecricket on January 11, 2013, 20:53 GMT

I can not believe some so called "cricket experts" want Azhar Ali out of the test team!! Which planet they are own??Look at his statistcis and number of 50 plus scores in his short carrer so far. He has performed really well especially against England. His century along with Younis was a pure class!! Misbah is a great captian and Pak needs him until things settle down. There is no clear replacement for him yet. Pak has tried Younis and Hafeez is not yet ready to be a test captian. Days of "flashy" test players in Pak are gone now. Overall good selection, I know there are many talented players but not everyone can get into playing 11!!!

  • on January 11, 2013, 20:42 GMT

Someone said that Azhar Ali should be dropped. Must be joking..right? His avg is +45 and all outside Pakistan. Majid, Zaheer, Asif, Mushtaq, Saleem Malik none had that average outside Pakistan. Also in his last test innings he scored 136. puzzled !!!

  • on January 11, 2013, 20:39 GMT

This was the best time to test. mohammad rizwan who is in reserve. an excellent keeper and an awsum batsmen aswell. i think pakistan shud have went in with 5 pacers. faisal iqbal has just averaged 25 tilll nw and thts very less while u seek him in 4 or 5 batting number. and a pure middle order batsmen. sadaf hussain, rahat ali could have been better options.

  • on January 11, 2013, 20:38 GMT

Happy that nasir jamshed is being rewarded for his good performances, Also the fact that haris sohail and Ehsan Adil have been selected must encourage domestic performers as it shows that a good domestic performance will give you a chance to be in contention for the national team squad. However there seems to be a common absence of a genuine all rounder in the national team obviusly if no one is good enough than fair enough but maybe someone like umar amin instead of sohail who can provide that extra alternative with the ball could have been a decent option? Overall a satisfying team but maybe another bowler could have added instead of faisal iqbal who just doesn't seem to cut it at international level. Perhaps Wahab Riaz.

I am so glad that Nasir Jamshed, Haris Sohail, and Ehsan Adil are in squad.. Faisal iqbal and gul are waste of space. They should have rather taken Umar Akmal and Wahab Riaz. Gul is such a diappointment. After playing so many years of internationl cricket he has learnt nothing, no development.

very well balanced and good team selection, nice to see more youngsters coming in, and THANK GOD they have dropped both KAMRAN and UMER AKMAL who don't deserve a place. Adnan's exclusion could be due to his finger operation and he might not be fully fit, but yes he could have been the first choice wicket-keeper for me at least. Excited to see Ehsan Adil, if given a chance he might prove effective on SA pitches!

Umar Gul has been below par in tests for a while now..i would drop him after this series unless he takes atleast 15 wickets & bring in the best fomestic bowler (Saddaf) in

  • on January 11, 2013, 20:04 GMT

Selection bold decision to discard some players who are not taking interest for national duty rather there own . Akmal bathers should re-considered there positions why even one of them was considered to be the Test side. The thing is that Faisal Iqbal was never performed in the test side and also he was out since 2010, if some other experience player like Mohammad yousef or Shouib Malik who is in good touch now a days given a chance would be better.

    @ Salmanb :

I totally agree with the summation of your feelings. I also agree that Umar Gul's place in the team is under serious threat. He has been underforming since a long time now. He better pull up his socks and do the hard yards otherwise like Umar Akmal he will be one more Umar gone from the Test team.

  • HawksEyeFocused on January 11, 2013, 19:22 GMT

There are some desperate Indians who just vent out their frustration here over the Pak team's selection and the SA tour. I just want to advise them to enjoy their another series defeat at the hands of England. Pakistan is still in that jubilant and ecstatic mood after thrashing and humiliating team India in their own backyard. Pakistan has superbly exposed the world's much over-hyped Indian batting in the last series. Now Indians can't digest Pakistan's renaissance and revival of their past glory and dominance over India. Just wait for BD, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan to beat you there at your own backyard!!! Plz publish

  • Sports4Youth on January 11, 2013, 19:21 GMT

  • Sports4Youth on January 11, 2013, 19:07 GMT

For those of you who are fighting over Umar Amin or Faisal, don't bother yourselves because in anycase either of them would be left out of the eleven. Let us see what the eleven may look like.

    1.Hafeez, 2.Jamshed, 3.Azhar Ali, 4.Y.Khan, 5.Misbah, 6.Asad Shafiq, 7.Sarfraz Ahmed, 8.U.Gul / Ehsan Adil, 9.Junaid, 10.M.Irfan, 11.Ajmal.

In my XI I am leaving Abdur Rehman out because I think in South Africa you can play only one spinner with Hafeez doing the part-time duties.

  • on January 11, 2013, 19:06 GMT

@hamza1982, cant agree more! All your points are good. But selectors must have hidden plannings. Perhaps they would play all four seamers in first test, then realise Irfan has been injured by bowling 40 odd overs, and call Wahab/Asad Ali for back-up. Remember, I read somewhere on Twitter that all three, Dav/Misbah/Selectors were divided on what players to be selected, and they might have given in to some demands of Dav/Misbah with the idea of replacements

  • Sports4Youth on January 11, 2013, 19:00 GMT

The greatest News in this article is that after a long time none of the Akmals are there in this team. First time common sense has prevailed in the selection.

It is great to hear that Sarfraz Ahmed is selected in the Test team. He averages 45 with the bat in the first classes matches. This is the format that suits him most. Glad that he finally got an apportunity in the corerect form

Nasir Jamshed was a no brainer. Now I think with Jamshed in the team Taufieeq Umar may have to sit out on the bench. Haris Sohail is a good choice but I can't see how he will make it into the eleven, unless someone is injured.

Selection of Mohammed Irfan is a good news. He along with Junaid can form a great pair. Also I hope this new boy Ehsan Adil is good, but looking at his age I think most probably he may be left warming the bench, unless someone gets injured.

Good selection..... Taufiq, hafeez, azhar, younis, misbah, asad, sarfraz, gul, junaid, irfan and ajmal should be the 11 for first test ..... our pacers will give tough time to the best in the game even i mean amla, kallis, AB and Smith .... our batsmen will have to work hard on technique and temperament to survive ....

This is insane!! The following have no place in my Pakistan team: Misbah, Azhar Ali, Faisal Iqbal, and Taufiq Umar. Misbah can only block like a tailender, Azhar Ali lacks technique, and I don't know how many chances Faisal Iqbal needs to get to prove he is really a nephew of Miandad. He might be his nephew but he is no Miandad so drop him for good PLEASE!!! Taufiq Umar, same category as Faisal Iqbal, tried, failed, tried again, etc... I think all of these four guys are holding spots away from other deserving cricketers. Out of the four, I would only include Azhar Ali if Younis Khan was replaced.

Team is looking good, players should prepare themselves for this tough tour, infact the toughest since 2010 England tour. Good to see some fresh faces and exclusion of akmals though adnan looked settled in the last 12 months but lets move on without over rated akmals. Irfan needs huge improvements to meet test standards but more important thing is that how pak batsmen will counter steyn, morkel and philander.

Umer Akmal acts like a brainless batsmen following the footstep of Afridi, Kamran Akmal, osrry dude, your prime time is over, on foreign land your wicket keeping is quite pathetic, and Adnan Akmal is too a rookie. In this team we are searching for another Moieen Akhtar, Rashid Lateef, and we are yet to find them. God help us.

  • um44rr on January 11, 2013, 17:27 GMT

.looking at most teams and their boards, you can understand why no team will dominate like Australia did in their era, it was simple pick players on their form and ability, when Australia decided to get political in their selection(like most other boards) they lost their invincible tag... india/england may have got to no.1 but frankly their average at best, the bcci can put as much money as they want into the icc's back pocket and the icc and can give england a cushy fixture list but when push comes to shove talent always prevails, hence why india/england lasted for as long as they did as the no.1 ranked team.. pakistan will not get to the no1 test team spot cuz of the players they pick...whose faisal iqbal when hes at home, pure waste of space, about time the akmal brothers was taken out of the equation,

  • hamza1982 on January 11, 2013, 17:27 GMT

  • NasserAliKhan on January 11, 2013, 17:14 GMT

At last the selectors got the hint from the 2 Akmal brothers' performance in the recent series in India. In total they batted in 5 innings; scored 3 nots, and scored 49 in total. They are both out; good riddance. The 3rd brother Adnan does deserve to be in the team as he is a decent enough wicketkeeper, can bat a bit, and doesn't give away his wicket without a fight. Being out as a result of not being fit explains it.

Pak bowling is arguably the best in the world and I expect a good performance against arguably the best batting line up. However, the feeble batting which struggles in docile pitches will get a hammering, as we have only 3 real test batsmen in Misbah, Azhar, and Asad. Nasir has been performing very well but he is new and may struggle although in time he will become another solid batsman for Pakistan. Younis Khan is a spent force and should not have been selected. His performance against the best teams of Australians and SA has always been poor. Our fielding????????????

  • on January 11, 2013, 17:12 GMT

The key player for pak is Saeed Ajmal, i don't think the other players like Nasir Jamshid and Irfan would have a good series. don't forget that Nasir Jamshid was struggling against an experience Indians pace bowlers earlier on when the ball was moving around but luck for him was that the Indian bowlers were not balled in consistent line and lend when the ball was new. This time you are right there against the NO.1 Test side in the World...have good luck for both teams.

  • on January 11, 2013, 17:10 GMT

I dont uderstand why the people hate akmal bros in pakistan. After the loss in third odi against india everyone blamming umar akmal who was playing his first game and scored 20 odd runs which was ok in low scoring match . He was better than the so called legends like younis, mishbah and shaoib malik. No one critisize azhar ali and co .

  • rehanahmeds on January 11, 2013, 17:08 GMT

what thing i like most about this squad is that akmal brothers are not in it... it is quite refreshing and good thing to do, in-fact i always thought they have a mafia set-up in board and no matter what there would be a akmal in a team atleast one of them in any kind of format .. so indeed it is a good selection .. other than that i'm desperately waiting for this series .. it would be first big test for pakistan and misbah abroad after a very good two years and it'll show us the strength of new pakistani team for the first time ... pakistan won against england (not taking anything from good cricket they played against them) but it was more to do with england's weakness against spin which help us to white wash them rather than pakistan's strength ... so bring it on win or lost but please fight and give us good cricket to watch <3 BEST OF LUCK TEAM PAKISTAN

  • on January 11, 2013, 17:07 GMT

Where is Raza Hasan???????????????? He was in perfect form against SL??

  • ReverseSwingMaster on January 11, 2013, 17:07 GMT

@Born2WatchCricket: PAK batting is weak but not that too weak which you think. If NZ can make 250 against your so called mighty bowlers, you can add 200 more in it. Based on this batting PAK can make easily 300 and the rest, bowlers will do a job. KALLIS will be the hurdle, I remember his performance against PAK in 2007 series, he is the only batsmen who always stood against PAK victory. Players SHAFIQ, AZHAR, MISBAH will be the key. Would be a great contest.

  • on January 11, 2013, 17:05 GMT

@borntowatchcricket: since you see pakistan been whitewashed, why dont we just wait and see how SouthAfrica plays with the likes of ajmal and rehman. If they didn't get whitewashed I would be very disappointment that you dont know shit about cricket.

  • Jawad.Shaikh on January 11, 2013, 17:01 GMT

They should pick Wahab riaz like every one keep saying Irfan can not play all 3 test matches.. Adil is rookie he wont get chance to play, we are one pacer short atm in this sqaud..

  • Anwar-Lara on January 11, 2013, 16:57 GMT

@ Majid ali , mate i dun think you watch enough cricket.. Azhar ,Misbah and Younis are in top 5 of Pakistan's best batsmen since 2011, kindly read this article which published on cricinfo today.

Now you cant ask your best batsmen to sit out on a tough tour , can you??

  • atharshah on January 11, 2013, 16:55 GMT

faisal iqbal have not done any wonders for pakistan... he hasnt perform as well that he can be in this squad... many more youngster are performing better then him like umer amin and more... its a case of javed miandaads source....come on javed bhai..he is not a talent like u.... adnal akmal in doing gr8 job in domestic circuit and also in tests... i dont know reason why he is not there.... i think instead of faisal we need a backup quick bowler... so far a well balanced squad

  • siddiqi on January 11, 2013, 16:47 GMT

Why Adnan Akmal is out?? He has been really good as a keeper and batted well under pressure. Obviously Iqbal Qasim is trying to please a pressure group by including a favourite of that pressure group.

  • Superstar_Salman_Khan on January 11, 2013, 16:46 GMT

Well Pak have always produced some quality fast bowlers. Be it new sensation Junaid ('Next Akram as some of the Pak fans are claiming')or any 30+ club level bowler. On fact and Bouncy pitches of SA that assists fast bowlers fully, Bowling has never been a problem ! It is the batting that always lets Pak down. Even against Ind, except Jamshed no one was able to play Ind seamers, then how can you expect Pak sloggers to even stand in front of likes of Steyn, Morkel, Philander and Kallis ? I can see Pak team losing all the matches and getting white-washed. 3-0. truth is Pak batsmen don't even deserve to be in any club level team let alone national.

  • Cricket_Man on January 11, 2013, 16:45 GMT

@CricIndia208: While it is understandable that you are obviously frustrated with your own teams performance, you can do much better than calling the Pakistani bowling lineup over rated which made your INDIAN batsmen forget how to bat. As far as Pakistani batting is concerned at least it was way ahead than the Indian lineup. Lastly, you better start praying because i see an inevitable whitewash by the English. Please publish!

  • on January 11, 2013, 16:45 GMT

Mr Salobalay......wait for SA tour you will see the profile of these three useless players....Look at Indian team they have excellent profile but they fail even in their own country wait and see these three so called batsmen failure in SA.

  • Solid_Snake on January 11, 2013, 16:43 GMT

@Majid Ali->Think before what you say..Majority Pak fans would disagree what you just said about Younis,Azhar & Misbah.Pak team is nothing if you take out all 3 of them. How are you going to win without them.I am waiting for you to tell us what you think about their replacement players..I would like to hear it out..

  • bonobo on January 11, 2013, 16:41 GMT

Also feel a little sorry for Adnan, I dont think he is a test class batsman (although obviously in good form), but he was great behind the stumps against England, chivvying away and full of energy, and more importantly in a spin lead attack, not giving anything away . Also impressed by Jamshed, although it was ODI, his composure bodes well for test matches and the ball was actually nipping about a fiar bit, when he made those runs...and fine batsman though he is, I am a little sceptical about Taufeeq on quicker seaming pitches, so i think we may have chance to see him in Saf.

  • on January 11, 2013, 16:41 GMT

Finally Afridi and both Umer and Kamran Akmal gone but why poor Adnan Akmal has been dropped? He was alright with the gloves, his batting needed a bit of confidence.

If Pakistan has to win in South Africa in Tests and ODIs then batsmen have to perform without which their good bowlers appear toothless. But they will take 20 wickets even of this magnificent south african line up.

Ideal batting line up for me would include,N.Jamshed,A.ALI,Y.Khan,A.Shafiq and Misbah as long as he can score runs. Hafeez should be kept away from Afridi only then he performs better.

  • Solid_Snake on January 11, 2013, 16:40 GMT

@CricIndia208->3-0 or whatever mate..But we wont be going down without a fight...Will not get humiliated like what happened to India in England & Australia..Indian team went down without any resistance at all which was shameful. Our bowling attack is not that pathetic. We will go down but will take SA batsmen down as well. Our bowlers wont sit back & watch their batsmen going down.

  • Solid_Snake on January 11, 2013, 16:35 GMT

@Majid Ali->24 Avg of 45...4 Centuries & 13 Fifties already..You calling that guy as useless..Seriously..If Azhar Ali is useless then who you think should be included in Tests? Younis Khan with over 6000 runs an Avg of 51 in tests looks like useless to you? Misbah ul Haq the captain of Pakistan with an Avg of 46 looks like useless to you? Out of these 3 only Younis has played in SA..Played 5 matches & he was superb in those matches. If these 3 players are useless than who should have been included in the team..Shahid Afridi,Umer Akmal,Ahmad Shehzad?

PS->& were going to play in Alien Conditions. So nobody knows what would happen. At least we should have some players to trust on.& these 3 are those players with Asad Shafiq included..

too many batsmen they should include one more seamer

  • ejsiddiqui on January 11, 2013, 16:33 GMT

I am feeling for Adnan. We should isolate his performance from his brothers. 243 runs in 3 innings at 121+ avg and safest hands behind the stumps. What else you want from a wicketkeeper.

  • on January 11, 2013, 16:32 GMT

But what a relief ,...that akmal brothers.....has been kicked out from team, i am so happy today,.. Who can forget that fateful day in sydney ,...test when akmal dropped 15 ,..catchs in single test, and lose single handedly ,winning test, for pak. He should be dumped forever...and pak should strengthen their batting ,otherwise bowiling is worldclass , i am eagerly waitng for this tour, as somd tearaway pace bowlers are on display. There would be a lot of chin music,ah what a sight,..Cheers from J & K...

Will be interesting to see who gets to play alongside Hafeez in the first test... Taufeeq Umar or the new rising star Nasir Jamshed. I wish PCB had arranged another 3/4-day game prior to the test series. Maybe they can still send the team a week earlier and request the hosts to arrange another warm-up game.

  • on January 11, 2013, 16:15 GMT

This seems good squad, i personally think jamshed should focused on limited overs cricket till then toufiq is not performs well as jamshed fitness is also question mark, can he runs in five days cricket? Ayub Dogar should have been given one more chance he is technically better batsmen than faisal and others.Plz include Imran Nazir atleast in T20 squad, he is the most popular and most crowd lover player in Pak team.

  • on January 11, 2013, 16:12 GMT

I believe that Pakistan always had been a top bowling side and if the young guys in the side keep their head and batters support a little bit, Pakistan should be able to create a flutter. Exciting fast bowlers they have and all their batters need to do is to ride a few fiery spells of Steyn and co and Pakistan should be on way to create history.

  • Imrizvi on January 11, 2013, 16:11 GMT

how can people compare Adnan with Sarfraz, Adnan have an average or 25 in first class and Sarfraz have average of 43.. is there any comparision? Sarfraz records show that he is much better batsman than so called highly talented Umar Akmal. But its true that Sarfraz made all his runs on subcontinent pitches, and he might get failed in SA. this is why they protect Adnan from getting failed, and through away Sarfraz there, to get their desired results (failure of sarfraz and confirmation for Akmal brothers in nex series... what a shame PCB... please give karachi boys a fair chance. (sarfraz only get one test and it was also in Australia...

CricIndia208: Pak bowling defeated ENG 3-0, and there were wins agaisnt SL, Kiwi etc. What has Indian bowling done recently?? Everyone knows how IND bowling has been performingo!!! Overall good selection. Yes there are more players who should be given chance but in the end not every one can get into 16 people squad. SA will win the series, I have no doubt about it. It will be good to see how Pak performs and I am sure their bowling will give SA a hard time. Batting is weak. And why people are complaining about Azhar Ali? He is a very good test player and has a great future ahead. As long as Pak play good cricket in SA, fans should be happy. You can't expect Pak to demolish SA, be realisitc!!!! So happy Pak has given Umar Akmal a boot, may be this will improve his attitude. He should go and play first class cricket and make few big centuries.

  • Stark62 on January 11, 2013, 16:04 GMT

NO SADAF HUSSAIN?!?! This has to be a JOKE!!

Irfan can't swing the ball, whilst Ehsan is just fast but with no skills attached.

Lastly, why has Adnan been dropped? He is the best pure keeper Pak have available and that's what we need in SA with the amount of movement the bowlers will extract, plus Sarfraz is very, very shaky behind the stumps and we saw that in the ODI's.

  • Dannymania on January 11, 2013, 16:01 GMT

people who are against rehman are people who have no idea about what test cricket is.

  • swingstowin on January 11, 2013, 15:58 GMT

@CricIndia208 why dont you go to Cricinfo's home page, maybe you'll see an over rated batting line up who couldn't chase a target on flat surface against a 2nd line English attack. Now thats a joke.

  • djdrastic on January 11, 2013, 15:56 GMT

Hoping for a a great series . Squad looks competitive and will hopefully produce some good test cricket.

  • Dhanvanth on January 11, 2013, 15:55 GMT

Winning a test match in south Africa mainly depends on the pitches we play! Generally touring countries win matches in durban and port Elizabeth because they support spin to a great extent! Whereas the ones in cape town, centurion and wanderers are fast paced which becomes hostile for SA! For Pakistan, the venues are wanderers, centurion and cape town so unless pak players put up great fight both with bat and ball they ll return home 3-0. But good selection on the possible line-up: taufeeq, hafeez, azhar ali, younis khan, asad shafiq, misbah, safraz, junaid, ajmal, gul, irfan/ehsaan.

  • on January 11, 2013, 15:53 GMT

@CricIndia208... yeah we can see that already in ur home ground, the world class batting against world class young side bowling.

  • on January 11, 2013, 15:53 GMT

@CricketIndia208 - dude take a chill pill, will ya? If you think Pak bowling is over rated then explain what happened in last 3 matches? Pak batting has always been a concern but I see they have strengthen it. Looking forward to see Haris Sohail and Ehsan Adil,if they get chance!

For me the team will be: (1st preference on the left where included multiple)

Nasir, Hafeez, Azhar/ Taufeeq, Younus, Misbah, Asad/ Haris/ Faisal, Sarfraz, Gul/ Ehsan/ Rahman, Saeed, Junaid, Irfan

Since we already have 2 spinners in Saeed and Hafeez - Rahman might not be played in SA conditions. Best option will be to go with 3 pacers. I don't see Ehsan playing first test even though I would love to see him play first test.

Looks a balanced squad - considering the conditions maybe a fast bowler short especially given Irfan's fitness ... Best of luck Team Pakistan!

  • on January 11, 2013, 15:47 GMT

A Complete WK is better than a half batsman, half WK. Good choice having Sarfaraz in the line. My only concern is Abdur Rehman's selection, why not Raza Hassan? he is young, talented.

  • on January 11, 2013, 15:46 GMT

  • AndyZaltzmannsHair on January 11, 2013, 15:42 GMT

@LillianThomson: do you really think Asif will be brought back into the Test team, potentially a few days after possibly being acquitted of his charges? That too after having played no cricket for well over 2 years. Oh and let's not forget, replacements can only be flown in if someone gets injured, and is a like for like replacement. Enough with the conspiracies.

  • Navaidzuberi on January 11, 2013, 15:39 GMT

@Mueen Ud Din Hammed; you r right about Misbah but what about Akmals??? They were total failure in India, Kamran totally failed with bat and also dropped catches as usual. Umer played shockingly (big stumping) to get out at that crucial stage (only 43 runs required from 11 overs). He should be dropped for one full series to give him a lesson that he is not INDISPENSABLE even in ODIs and T20s. He has talent but no brain. Everybody in Pak knows that AKMALS are the most favored bros in Pak cricket. Kamran is the worst keeper who played test for so long, never deserved to play for Pak. What Kamran has done since his come back, simply nothing.

  • on January 11, 2013, 15:37 GMT

Cheema and adnan akmal should have been there . Cheema would have provided support to junaid and Gul plus u need an experienced third seamer in SA . Irfan would not last a test series in SA . Sarfraz has a poor technique especially against fast bowlers . He can only score runs against first class teams loaded with spinners and wtf is faisal iqbal doing in the squad . U only need 1 resreve middle order batsman in the squad not 2

  • on January 11, 2013, 15:29 GMT

  • abdulsamad14 on January 11, 2013, 15:24 GMT

@Majid Ali Azhar ali is one of our best batsmen... hes made the most runs by a pakistani in tests since his debue :) Agreed hes not a one day batter, but its a better test squad with him :) Dont like sarfraz Ahmed at Adnans expence... we need a bit of stability at 7, and adnan was looking ok. Problem is judging by the one day games, dont realy see his having a better chance of making a 50 than Adnan... Lastly think they need to keep the top 6 the same (mabye jamshed for taufeeq),no debues yet... its a tough series stick to the experience.

  • AndyZaltzmannsHair on January 11, 2013, 15:23 GMT

Sarfraz was picked over Adnan because in part he's taller. Could you imagine little Adnan trying to keep to Irfan on those bouncy wickets. The ball would go over his head. He'd have to stand further back which means more chance of soft edges not carrying. Sarfraz is taller, and is also a better batsman. Good Squad, but don't understand Faisal Iqbals inclusion. As long as no batsman gets injured, he won't play.

  • on January 11, 2013, 15:18 GMT

ideally would have gone for an extra qukie (talah coz of his high arm action, wahab is more round arm) at cost of faisal i think they tried to give cusion to batting..........surfarz and adnan are equal in talent so no issue.

  • LillianThomson on January 11, 2013, 15:18 GMT

There is an awful possible explanation for why the squad is blatantly one fast bowler short.

The first Test is 1-5 February. There is then a week's gap before back-to-back Tests start on 14 and 22 February, and that is when at least one fast bowling reinforcement will be required.

I scratched my head as to why they have gone with less fast bowlers than even Sri Lanka took 13 months ago. And then it hit me.

Mohammed Asif's appeal will be held before the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 5-7 February. He was represented in the court case by UK Prime Minister Cameron's brother, who after the guilty verdict made clear that regardless of whether Asif was or wasn't guilty, he believed that the specific evidence v Asif was flimsy and that the client was disadvantaged by his case being held before a judge who already knew that Amir had pleaded guilty.

Asif may well have his ban ended on 7 February. Is he the intended extra fast bowler for the last 2 Tests? I hope not.

The Selection committee is doing a commendable job investing on the most valuable players of Pakistan cricket. Junaid Khan, inspite of being left in the T20 Worldcup, has made an impacting return and has proved his potential as a swing bowler, living upto the standards of the quicks produced by Pakistan. Nasir Jamshed is young yet highly talented and exposure to the skilled and highly talented team like South Africa will further enhance his batting abilities. Also, the selection of Sarfaraz Ahmed is brilliant because even though he possess batting abilities apart from being a decent wicketkeeper, he was being ignored. We will be hoping for another good show now!

  • cric4world on January 11, 2013, 15:08 GMT

they should have picked another fast bowler instead of faisal iqbal. already too many batsmen in side and they all deserve long run, jamshed n hafeez in good form, azhar n asad upcoming talent in test, misbah n younis gona play every match i think so its 6 batsmen right there.taufeeq umar and haris sohail r enough for reserve. in SA u need 3 fast bowlers with one spinner that obviously is saeed ajmal (rehman only back up) n hafeez is a useful 5 bowler. so squad is short of one fast bowler. and adnan akmal is left out without any reason. he has done good keeping in tests and provides useful lower order partnerships. not fair to adnan akmal. but good thing is other two akmals r left out they took international cricket way too easy

  • Solid_Snake on January 11, 2013, 15:06 GMT

What's the criteria of PCB selecting players for a tour? This guy is talented no doubt..he was great in U19 WC..But he has played only 11 first class matches & yet he got selected..There are so many other players who are taking wickets one after another in First class yet they are never given a chance in Pak team. This guy comes in,plays 11 matches & gets himself into the team..But this guy wont even get a chance with Gull & Junaid already there.Pak should go in with 3 pacers..What's the use of Rehman on SA pitches..We already got Ajmal & Hafeez there..This team is so unbalanced. Also what is Faisal doing in the team..He was given soooooooo many chances yet he failed every time.Yet he is given chance again..

  • on January 11, 2013, 15:00 GMT

hard on adnan akmal... he has done so well for us in the test for the last 2 years... if anything they should not select umar akmal and kamran akmal for the one day series. otherwise this is a decent squad... i highly doubt that the batting will be able to hold against steyn, philander and morkel on bouncy and seaming wickets but the bowling looks pretty good. would like to see ehsaan adil get a match he has been consistent in the domestic season this year.

  • doctorace on January 11, 2013, 14:59 GMT

Ehsan Adil may still prove to be a good choice but I would have liked to see Sadaf Hussain unless they were concerned about fitness with him just coming back from injury. Sarfraz is a better batsman than adnan akmal and we need all the batting firepower we can get on SA pitches so it might not be a bad pick. Adnan akmal did well but the question is --did he cement his place with a breathtaking display of batting--probably not.

Faisal Iqbal-- really? I understand that he has not gotten a consistent run but he is not the highest run scorer in domestics for a while now.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:59 GMT

Thanks finally Akmal brothers are out. I do not understand why Azhar Ali is still there ... he must have good friendship with Misbah. Even Misbah is struggling for his performance.

  • LillianThomson on January 11, 2013, 14:55 GMT

The omissions of Cheema and Sami should be particularly applauded.

Cheema's done little wrong for Pakistan, but the main characteristic of these 3 Test venues (compared with Durban and Port Elizabeth) is that the pitches have extreme bounce, and favour bowlers taller than 6 foot 2 who pitch the ball up and get steepling bounce.

Short, skiddy bowlers do nothing there, and neither will Rehman.

The only imbalance is the lack of a quick-bowling all-rounder to bat at number eight. It may be that Ehsan Adil is intended to bat 8, with Gul at 9, Ajmal at 10 and Junaid at 11.

Which would be a shame - NZ's lefties Wagner and Boult have done okay today v SA, and of course Mitchell Johnson has twice broken Graeme Smith's hand. Irfan could be very, very useful in South African conditions, but only if he bowls a full-enough length.

  • TauseefGee on January 11, 2013, 14:54 GMT

    Why not Adnan Akmal?????????????

  • sohailus on January 11, 2013, 14:54 GMT

Really good selection. It's going to b really tuff competition between the two nation.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:52 GMT

@Hina Saleem they picked Faisal coz of Javed Miandad... shameful selection.. I dont know about Muhammad Irfan if he can play for five days...

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:51 GMT

I do not like this squad. Adnan Akmal is the best keeper we have had in my opinion since the days of 2003-2005 Kamran or the days of Moin. Adnan can also stay and score fighting half centuries with like he did in Sri Lanka. We need him. I think that we should give a chance for all the players to play in the first 2 tests, with Misbah and Hafeez in both teams. Then in the third test, we will make our squad based on player's performance in first two tests.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:51 GMT

I would rather preferred Adnan Akmal instead of Sarfaraz Ahmed..........

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:49 GMT

Its a good team, but still there are some question marks.Inclusion of Faisal Iqbal and exclusion of Kamran Akmal. Good to see Haris Sohail in the squad. He should be given a chance now.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:49 GMT

Sadaf Hussain, he looks better than others.. he has a great record. he should have been selected.. anyway a good team

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:47 GMT

I'm suprised they dropped adnan akmal as he kept well in the test he played. His batting was spirited and scored some useful runs. Definately the best keeper out if the akmal brothers. Good to see Mohammed irfan in the squad as with his height and pace he could cause all sorts of problems against Amla, kallis and co provided his discipline and fitness stays with him.

  • QingdaoXI on January 11, 2013, 14:46 GMT

Dear Pakistani Selctors M.irfan was successful in Short Series in India becuase he was fresh and keep him only for t-20 and ODis. Tests will make him iinjury prone and spoil his carrier.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:46 GMT

i think they should have included umar akmal in place of adnan akmal if kamran is with the team then what is the purpose of adnan akmal in the team well it iz a good selection

  • kamsys007 on January 11, 2013, 14:45 GMT

get out faisal iqbal and sarfraz ahmed and bring back adnan akmal n hammad azam also umar akmal

  • MianMoosa on January 11, 2013, 14:44 GMT

thats very strange selection by selector,s..... u r going to RSA with 4 fast bowlers,,, and that also with gamble like irfan of his fitness & inexperience of ehsan adil,,, i think wahab riaz should have been there in place of rehman...adnan akmal have nothing wrong to be get out... jamshed should must open with hafeez....

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:44 GMT

I dont know why some people are against Akmal brothers....jealous... Umar did not perform badly in Indian tour but he is unlucky because he is not "BHANJA" of Javed Mian instead of Umar Akmal ..Bhanja Faisal Iqbal is in squad...Can Iqbal Qasim give any logic for Faisal Iqbal selection ? Why was Adnan Akmal not selected as keeper ? It clearly indicates that a strong lobby was working against Akmal brothers....Sad and strange.......Even Gavaskar, a neutral person, said that Pakistan lost 3rd ODI because Misbah ul Haq ..who dropped Dhoni's easiest catch and played real TUK TUK innings..........Why PCB is insisting with him ...he is 39 and skipper of test and ODI team ?????....will he play next world cup at the age of 41 ?......what the hell is that....Mr. Iqbal Qasim has tried to please Karachi media as well as Javed Mian Dad ..he must be very warmly greeted at Karachi air port. Mueen ud din

  • LillianThomson on January 11, 2013, 14:43 GMT

On reflection, this squad is short of one fast bowler, and they will pay a heavy price for that.

The 3 Tests in the space of 21 days are at Jp'burg, Cape Town and Centurion, and you need 3 fast bowlers at all 3.

But there is no margin for injury or poor form left here - if Gul, Junaid or Irfan break down, then Adil has to play. I'd have liked to see Wahab Riaz there as a bowler who can bowl 145K.

But the selection reeks of an anti-corruption agenda. All the tainted players are omitted - we know who they are, but as they haven't been found guilty I won't name them.

That's important - Pakistan would have won the last series in SA if they hadn't been able to put away SA after they fell to 39-4 chasing 161 in the last innings. At which point Messrs Asif and Kaneria suddenly stopped getting people out. Both of whom are currently banned for match-fixing.

  • AK47_pk on January 11, 2013, 14:42 GMT

Ehsan adil , next big thing for pakistan. Sad for sadaf but u cant select all of them so I hope he, ll make a cut in odis. Wat is mr iqbal doing there? Fawad alam wudve been better choice if we had had to please karachi. Adnan akmal is injured so sarfraz be picked up. Good selection apart.from sir iqbal.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:41 GMT

I hardly doubt, if they're will be any debutant in the whole series! Pakistan has the worst rotation policy in the whole world !!

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:41 GMT

    Where from Faisal Iqbal came???

  • hassanulhaq on January 11, 2013, 14:40 GMT

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:37 GMT

What on earth Sarfaraz and Faisal doing in the squad ?! Adnan akmal is far better batsmsn than sarfaraz.. overall selection is good, dont think young guns will get any chance to be in playing eleven.

  • CorneredTiger92-09 on January 11, 2013, 14:36 GMT

the team should be Hafeez Taufeeq/Jamshed Azhar Younus Misbah Shafiq/Sohail Sarfraz Gul Junaid Irfan Ajmal

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:34 GMT

They Picked Sarfraz Becoz Adnan Can't cross the circle.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:31 GMT

Jamshed can easily play in the middle order. Hes in ripe form. Should be playing at 6 in place of Shafiq

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:31 GMT

Why has adnan akmal been dropped? Out of the akmal brothers, only he has been performing well. He's a good wicket keeper and a fighting batsman. I like sarfraz but to pick him out of the blue and that too for a tour to SA??? Adnan's been performing well in fc as well. And no sadaf hussain? Ehsan's a good pick but surely sadaf's light years ahead of him. My playing X1 for the SA tour: 1.Hafeez 2.Jamshed 3.Younus 4.Azhar 5.Misbah 6.Asad/Harris 7.Sarfraz 8.Gul 9.Junaid 10.Ajmal 11. Ehsan.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:30 GMT

Now Pakistan has almost same squad forTest, ODI and T20 . Irfan can not even bowl 10 overs straight how can he cope with test bowling? Nasir Jamshed deserve to have some rest may put pressure on Taufiq.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:29 GMT

it looks a good team selection except Faisal Iqbal, who got plenty of chances but never made in impact except that hundred against India in Karachi long ago. At last Ehsan Adil got a chance after an impressive first class performance. i was expecting him to be selected for the last India tour. A bit disappointed for not selection Anwar Ali, a consistent performer at the domestic level. He can swing and seam the ball both ways at a rapid pace... i don't know when he will geat a chance.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:26 GMT

Whosoever has selected Irfan in test team has made a big blunder.. His body cant take the rigors of test cricket...

  • vrn59 on January 11, 2013, 14:25 GMT

My PAK Test XI: Hafeez, Taufeeq/Jamshed, Azhar Ali, Younis, Misbah (C), Shafiq, Sarfraz (wk), Ajmal, Gul, Junaid, Irfan. Although Rehman bowled well in the last Test series, a second spinner won't be required in SA (especially since Hafeez bowls very handy offspin). The pace attack looks well balanced: Gul has experience and great control, Junaid can swing the ball really well and bowl superbly off the seam and Irfan has got pace and bounce. Ajmal (one of the spinners in the world today) bolsters the bowling even further. Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Younis, Misbah and Shafiq are certainties barring injury. Sarfraz is a good choice: a new wicketkeeper we required. A call will have to be made on whether Taufeeq should be picked (he hasn't really done much wrong

  • go_pk_go on January 11, 2013, 14:24 GMT

Tufeeq umer I can't beleive this, They should have Anwer Ali in the squad as fifth fast bowler ,I don't think we need Rehman in the squde Hafeez and Ajmal ll do the spiners job.Not sure about wk ADNAN AKMAL did well for Pak in recent times

  • johnal on January 11, 2013, 14:18 GMT

im from the west indies .i am very happy for mohammed irfan following his career a long time now. nice to see taufeeq back.nasir the next big star from pakistan.wat about babar azam

  • Daud85 on January 11, 2013, 14:18 GMT

Ya that is a good selection but i would rather happy to See Taveer Ahmad for Irfan in the tour. As irfan height will be problem for him in the longer format. And the S.A grounds are very hard. The example of Shoaib Akher after his come back to S.A tour is in front of us. So its a very tough call for Irfan. so my chioce would be Tanveer Ahmad or Wahab Riaz rather than Irfan. We have to use him very carefully for him to perform in the ODIs and T20Is.

  • CorneredTiger92-09 on January 11, 2013, 14:15 GMT

good selection but i really think that Adnan Akmal should be playing as hes the best pure wicketkeeper Pakistan have. Irfan is a gamble and Jamshed should only play if there is injuries as his running between the wickets is diabolical and I cant wait to see Ehsan Adil in action

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:14 GMT

good to see all akmal r out.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:10 GMT

I would have liked to see Adnan Akmal behind the stumps, not sure if Sarfraz Ahmed is the right choice !

It will be interesting to see who's gonna be in the playing 11. My suggested playing 11:

Taufeeq Umer Muhammad Hafeez Azhar Ali Younas Khan Misbah ul Haq Asad Shafiq Sarfraz Ahmed Junaid Khan Abdul Rehman Saeed Ajmal Muhammad Irfan

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:10 GMT

No way Pakistan is going to win. But it will be a great experience for this time.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:09 GMT

Good team selection except Taufeeq Umar and Misbah ul Haq. I sont know why we are persisting with Misbah he is too old and very slow. besides is not a good fielder.By the way who is behind him (big safarash).I doubt Mohammad Irfan can stand up to the rigours of Test matches, he is okay for shorter versions but not for Test matches.

  • Ammar.Asgahr on January 11, 2013, 14:09 GMT

    Great Selection I love it

  • LillianThomson on January 11, 2013, 14:06 GMT

Generally sound, but that's an awfully long tail, which I suspect will mean that Ehsan Adil will be the third seamer batting at number eight instead of playing two out-and-out number elevens which would happen if Irfan and Junaid both played.

I only realised two days ago that Adil was likely to be selected, in part because of his Under-19 success in South Africa less than a year ago.

Everything now depends upon acclimatisation to the bouncier pitches. And on the replacement of Taufeeq by Jamshed. It's true that Taufeeq has a good record against South Africa, but he has been struggling at every level for the last 12 months, and he surely can't be risked.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:05 GMT

there is need of nasir in team.....

  • PAK-92 on January 11, 2013, 14:04 GMT

No Akmal in the Test squad! My wish has finally come true. We don't need them in ODI or T20 cricket either. Only maybe Umar in the T20 team. I can't believe that a nation like Pakistan can't find a keeper better than Kamran. His batting has been shoddy for years now and his main role in the ODI team is just that of a wicketkeeper. And as far as Umar Akmal goes, he's just another Rohit Sharma. All you hear the commentators say about both of these two is 'They have all the talent in the world.' Playing 1 or 2 extravagent shots now and again doesn't guarantee you a spot in a squad. Umar needs to go back to the drawing board and work on his temperament and shot selection. He could have been another Kohli but after all, he is an Akmal!

  • Zahidsaltin on January 11, 2013, 14:04 GMT

It is a good selection apart from not including Umar Akmal. Umar Akmal is being criticized unduely by the conservatives. He should be allowed to establish himself with his own brand of offensive cricket. His substitute Asad Shafiq has not done any wonders either and is far from being considered a good batsman. I hope they play Haris Sohail in test matches.

  • on January 11, 2013, 14:01 GMT

A golden day! No Akmal in the squad~! Thumbs up PCB, for mixing up some promising youngsters with the seniors. The only wrong decision is of out of match-practice Abdur Rahman. Zulfiqar Babar is a deserving in-form player who has been the highest wicket-taker in last two domestic season (or something like that)

  • naeemhussain on January 11, 2013, 14:00 GMT

Some one should give just one reason to pick Faisal Iqbal and Sarfraz Ahmed. Umer Amin should have been the part of the team in place of Faisal and Mohammad Rizwan young wicketkeeper who is also a wonderful batsman.

  • liaqathussain on January 11, 2013, 13:58 GMT

  • on January 11, 2013, 13:55 GMT

Abdur Rehman ? look for future which is Hassan Raza. Sarfraz Ahmed as keeper hmm i would picked Kamran Akmal and not sure Mohammed Irfan is fit for test dont waste him safe him for ODI and T20. He is 30 years old

  • on January 11, 2013, 13:54 GMT

Best thing is all are in on MERIT! Performers of previous First class season! Hoping to see Khurram Manzoor and Zulfiqar Bbar later this year!

But why is Adnan Akmal dropped? He is very good keeper (look at his dives) and his batting has improved (remember the 53 in his last test?) We finally had a full time test replacement for Kamran.

  • on January 11, 2013, 13:51 GMT

Its really good to see that the selectors are taking their stance over those who don't deserve a place in the team. The Akmal brothers are out of the team on their inconsistent performances, a decision that should have been taken quite some time ago but its good to see that a new side with a good bowling unit is present.

  • Salmanb on January 11, 2013, 13:38 GMT

They have again selected a team on merit based on first class performances. And i think now the next step would be to improve the first class cricket a bit. I hope irfan is fit enough to play test cricket and cant wait enough to see ehsan irfan and junaid bowl together. I think umer gul is under some serious threat.
