Fast bowlers Tanvir Ahmed and Rahat Ali have been added to Pakistan's squad for the three Tests against South Africa. Considering the conditions and duration of the tour, the team management had requested Pakistan's selection committee to reinforce the squad with two more fast bowlers.
Both Ahmed and Ali are expected to reach South Africa before the first Test begins on February 1 in Johannesburg. Currently, their squad includes four quicks: Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and uncapped players Mohammad Irfan and Ehsan Adil.
ESPNcricinfo understands that due to a difference in choice between the selection committee and the team management, the committee decided to send Ali along with Ahmed, who was part of the reserves for the tour.
Ali has been out the side since he played one ODI against Sri Lanka in June last year, while the 34-year old Ahmed last played a Test in May 2011, in West Indies, after which he was dropped because of fitness and performance.
The Pakistan squad is currently playing a four-day warm-up match against South African Invitation XI in East London. After the Test series, Pakistan will play two Twenty20s and five one-dayers in South Africa.

Anyways, in my opinion the inclusion of players who have proven they have the skill and temperament to play top level test cricket should have been chosen and those who have played international cricket quite recently. And I think current domestic form should be in contention when choosing players but also I think the selectors should have more patience when a player has one below par series... So taking nothing away from these 2 bowlers, Rahat Ali and Tanvir Ahmed. A better choice would have been Aizaz Cheema, considering that he was also performing similarly like Tanvir Ahmed, then was dropped but he has been in the international scene more recently than Tanvir Ahmed. Rahat Ali, well I can't say much in regards to who could replace him, as his domestic form currently is good perhaps here Tanvir Ahmed could have been the more suitable choice in terms of proven temperament and experience but right now, Tanvir Ahmed is being used as a scape goat in the case if he performs poorly.
A 35 year old pacer?! Hahaha.... The cupboards are empty, I tell ya!

Now looking at those 2 I know who I would pick. Khan doesnt even come close. In order to get near philly he would need to take 50 wickets in 5 games to equal ohillys amazing feats. We will see how he does in these 3 tests but somehow i doubt he will be nearly as efective as big Vern is. Philly for president!! If you want to compare phillys in sub continent then you have to compare junaid in SA, so they both work out the same - Zero for all stats becuse neiither has played in each others turf before.

Philander is an excellent bowler but he is NO BETTER than Junaid. He has not played in the sub continent at all, whereas Junaid already has three 5 wicket hauls in the sub continent.
Also, WASIM AKRAM HIMSELF SAID THAT JUNAID KHAN IS JUST LIKE HIM. You are judging Junaid on a practice match that you haven't even seen? Junaid destroyed the Indian batting line up and make Kohli his bunny, thats why you are so upset. Lets see Philander average 12 in a one day series vs India in India or take multiple 5 wicket hauls in the sub continent. You are just blinded by your hatred of Pak
Posted by emrates on (January 30, 2013, 3:08 GMT)tanvir is good inclusion he is good seamer and advantage is that he can bat well too averages more than afridi in test....we dont need to cry anymore who is included who is not..if pakistan wana win they can win with this team..pakistan make sure you atleast can make 300 every inning in tests which i know is really hard..bowling is great..best of luck Pak!
Posted by omar_choudhary on (January 30, 2013, 0:11 GMT)@counterstrike1.6 - Just to correct you there bowlers do need time to adjust, they need to adjust their line and length according to the bouncy tracks of South Africa. A recent example was Sri Lanka against Australia in Australia. The bowlers struggled to fine the correct line and length to bowl on the surfaces there in the first couple games and then came back superbly to draw the ODI Series and clench the T20 series superbly, all credits due to their adjustment of line and length on the quicker Australian wickets. And that Akram comment, some Pakistani fan made of Junaid Khan, well let it go! I am sure some fans get caught up in the moment of success, and proclaim and start comparing some player to a LEGEND. Its nothing to be taken literally, remember Amir being called the next Akram. In an interview, he said people started to expect a lot from him after some good series, and then made comparisons of him with Wasim.

Pakistan known to produce explosive talent which thrown in ring at a tender age.....its seem that 30 years mean new 18 yrs to paki selectors...is their no young fast bowling talent available in Pakistan now....
