Mohammad Irfan suffers upset stomach

Mohammad Irfan, the Pakistan fast bowler, suffered an upset stomach during the third ODI in Johannesburg and could be in doubt for the fourth ODI in Durban on March 21. Irfan was visibly uncomfortable in the field after bowling seven overs on a hot day in Johannesburg, requiring medical attention before walking off to the dressing room. In the previous ODI, in Centurion, Irfan picked up four wickets and was adjudged Man of the Match in Pakistan's victory, but there too, he bowled seven overs before walking off the field, holding his hamstring.

Sohail Tanvir, the left-arm seamer who also plays for the Lions franchise in South Africa, was in the Pakistan dressing room watching the game. Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, said Pakistan will be considering him as a back-up option. "We are considering him [Tanvir] as a back-up," he told reporters at the end of the third ODI, won by South Africa who took a 2-1 lead.

In Johannesburg, Pakistan were initially not allowed a substitute for Irfan since the umpires felt he was carrying an injury into this game. But once it was discovered he had an upset stomach today, and not a hamstring problem, a substitute was eventually allowed.

"He got an upset stomach and loose motions, there is nothing wrong with the hamstring," Misbah said. "There was some confusion with the umpires when he left the field so that's why we had to field with 10 men for a bit. Once they got the call from the doctor that it was something different, it was not the hamstring, we were allowed the substitute.

"There is no issue with Irfan's hamstring, he got cramps and he felt drained so that's why he left the field. His hamstring is fine. We will have to see whether he is available for the next match if his stomach gets better."

Umar Gul played in Centurion but missed out in Johannesburg due to injury, and his condition too needs to be monitored ahead of Pakistan's next match. "After the last game he had a small knee problem and he had some pain," Misbah said. "He was still in pain today and sideways movement was difficult for him so that would be a problem, especially when fielding."

i think selectors should give a chance to sadaf hussain after champions trophy, gul need a break he is playing on consistent basis thats y he is unable to perform and he should also be dropped just like afridi so that he can feel that if he will not perform so he'll also be sacked. my playng 11

haffez, Nasir, umar, kamran, misbah, afridi, malik, wahab, ajmal, junaid, irfan

dont even think to drop nasir it will effect his perfmnce in champions tophy.Wahab is a team guy and a passionate cricketer he will prove himself just like he did in semifinal. just give him chance in consistent basis like yk n gul despite of sevral failures

  • AK47_pk on March 19, 2013, 12:38 GMT

Opening bowling pair is getting setteled in form of irfan nd junaid.one hsa pace nd bounce nd one has pace nd swing. We need a good 3rd seamer nd bowling shud be back on track. Gul needs some proper time away from any sort of cricket. Wahab isnt an ideal 1st change nd so as tanvir. Cmon selectors, one more good pacer plz. Back up bowling is good though.

Drop Jamshed, promote kamran to opening and get Umar Akmal in. Give Wahab few more games to prove his worth.

This regulation of not being allowed a substitute if you go down with an injury you are already carrying needs clarification. Michael Clark has had back problems for years; what happens if his back seizes in a limited overs match?

If it's just 'upset stomach' then how come any person is not able to recover in two three days? Unless it's hamstring. We really need him because it was so obvious that SA was waiting Irfan and Juniad to be relpaced from the attack. Maybe add Rehman or Gul instead of Wahab because series is till alive. I agree Wahab should'nt be drop but again the series is alive and we can't afford his spell again. PERIOD.

  • on March 18, 2013, 13:31 GMT

Despite poor showing with the ball by Wahab I agree he should be given few more opportunities before judgement is made on him. After all he has performed well for Pakistan in the past on his test debut against England and in the semi final of last World Cup against India. Wahab also is a decent batsman and with time could become bowling all rounder. Now a days it is imperative in ODIs and T20 that bowlers are also decent batsmen. It is for this reason Wahab if in bowling form would get into Pakistan XI ahead of Junaid and Irfan who cannot bat. If they want to continue to be part of the team they need to improve their batting. Gul performs occasionally with the bat but he too needs to perform on consistent basis both with ball and bat. Ajmal always tries his best with the bat but also needs to improve his batting. If everyone is in form my XI for 4th ODI would be: 1. Jamshed, 2. Kamran, 3. Yunus, 4. Umar, 5. Misbah, 6. Hafeez, 7. Afridi, 8. Wahab, 9. Gul, 10. Ajmal, 11. Irfan.

wahab riaz atleast shows the fight , he must be given more chances in games, dropped catches in the match cost the game , pakistan should drop younis khan and shoaib malik , instead umar akmal and asad shafique should be in playing XI

We all hope the good natured Big man will be fit for the next match,he is the one SA realy fear. As for wahab he was just unlucky.tanvir can be expensive also but he is a good hitter.i would choose any of them but would try umar akmal instead of Malik .i thought kamran was set to make a good innings to atone for his poor wicket keeping just bad luck also for Younis .we can bring in umar akmal as batsman wicket keeper and ADD asad Shafiq as well.anyways we have to do something about these super batsmen amla and de villiers OR they can run away with the Series.misbah gifted them too many singles.he should have put pressure on them. Great to see Afridi getting some deserved luck though.lets hope he does better next time.

Every team should have Batsmen+All rounders+ WK+ Bowers in a combination of (4+3+1+3). Wahab, Afridi and Hafeez fall in the all rounders place. They can bowl 20 overs altogether, and score 100+ runs. All the three should be selected. It was damn flat wicket, due to which none of the bowlers got success. Also, bowling coaches will be Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Mushtaq Ahmad and Sqlain Mushtaq, to compete with Allan Donald of SA. Other than all rounders, specialist batsmen and specialist bowlers need to be tidy up. To select 4 batsmen who have the most 100s in variable wickets among NASIR+SHAFIQ+YOUNIS+MISBAH+UMAR AKMAL+IMRAN FARHAT is not a difficult task. If they can add 150 altogether, then rest assured is win.

No bowler should be judged on one bad match. Wahab Riaz must be given another chance. Give him a good run before making any decision. This Wanderers track is famous for high scoring games. Only top quality bowlers like Steyn and Junaid survived on this track. Gul would've been very expensive too. 2 chances of Amla were dropped of Wahab's bowling (Amla was batting at 34 then). He had a bad day but one chance is just not enough. It would be like destroying his career if he is dropped from the next match. Persist with him and ask him to bowl line and length and forget about bowling 145+. Plus, he batted well and he has previously proved that he can bat well. I have a feeling he will give a good performance if given another chance.

@Rana1610, wahab is making a comeback after 14months into the Team, so give the guy a break. his recent domestic performances are top class he has taken 40+ wickets this season, including 2 hat tricks and one 9wicket haul. HE batted superbly, and had hafeez and kamran not dropped amlaand devillers off his bowling, the match situation would have been different. IT is captains responsibility to set the field for the bowler, we should have had a slip in place, as two sure shot chances went through there.

Wahab Riaz should be given another chance, one match is not enough to test a bowler. I don't understand people's mentality, even media is criticizing him for bad bowling and not about the chances given to amla and de villiers due to bad fielding. As for batting, he did bat well and try to not play loose and irresponsible shots like all of our batsmen.

  • avmd on March 18, 2013, 0:59 GMT

its not Wahab's fault if they keep dropping catches on his bowling, Amla was dropped by keeper and a sitter by Hafeez. Everyone, including Amjad leaked runs today. Next match will be on a bouncy track and Wahab being the fastest bowler on both side should have a go.
