Born in Faisalabad but raised in Karachi, Moazzam was picked up in 1993 from the national Imran Khan training camp at UBL complex in Karachi. He was also coached later by Jalaluddin, former Pakistan fast bowler and coach of Pakistan Customs club. Faisalabad selected him after a good tour of Punjab with his club team Hanif Mohammad Club.
Unlike many cricketers, Moazzam continued studying medicine in Karachi, a combination of travel, work and cricket that meant, initially restricted opportunities. He made his first-class debut against ADBP in Quaid-e-Azam trophy in December 1999 and though he did not take any wickets in that match, he took his first five-for in the next match against Rawalpindi.
By the time he played his last match, a semi-final against Khan Research Laboratories - in which he took three first-innings wickets - he was already suffering from compression fractures in his back, an injury sustained in an earlier match in the same season against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL). The injury effectively ended his career though in his four years, he was called to national camp twice, in 1999 and 2002. Injuries and study meant he missed both.
He has since migrated to the US, after graduating from medical college in Karachi in 2004. He busies himself now with club cricket in North Texas and rather than bowling he keeps wicket.
