Abbott in ODI squad as cover for injured Morkel

Fast bowler Kyle Abbott has been added to South Africa's one-day squad for the series against Pakistan, as cover for the injured Morne Morkel. Morkel had picked up a hamstring injury during the course of the second Test and is still recovering.

As a result of that injury, Abbott was called up to the Test squad too, for the third match, and impressed with a nine-wicket haul (including seven in the first innings) on international debut. He is also part of the squad for the two Twenty20s that precede the one-dayers.

"Morne Morkel's recovery is still a work in progress," Cricket South Africa selection convener, Andrew Hudson, said. "And we consider it prudent to provide extra depth to our fast-bowling resources."

Abbott had a fine season in domestic cricket, prompting his initial call-up for the Test. He finished the first-class tournament as the leading wicket-taker, with 49 wickets at an economy rate of under three an over for Dolphins. When he got the Test call-up, Hudson had said Abbott "swings the ball nicely" and he did showcase those skills in the Test: bowling in the mid-130s, he kept it around off stump and consistently got the ball to zip away from the right-hand batsmen on a Centurion pitch with variable bounce. Subsequently, six of his seven first-innings victims were out edging to the slip cordon or gully.

South Africa and Pakistan play the T20s on March 1 and 3, and the five-match ODI series is scheduled to begin on March 10. Their other fast-bowling options in the one-day squad include Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Rory Kleinveldt and Ryan McLaren.

Gotta agree Tommytucker. I'm sick of watching 2 and 3 test match series followed by a load of rubbish pyjama cricket. Give us, the fans and the team, more tests. Now they are on a break until October and will come out to the UAE and be very rusty in the first test. 5 tests in a summer of cricket? what a travesty. Eng and Aus play 5 tests back to back this year, that's 10 in a row, more than we will get all year. Its a wonder this team does so well with so little cricket they play. IMO the top tier teams should always play 5 match series. Stop pandering to the money and think about the sport, please. As for this ODI and T/20 series, Im sure the Pak supporters are looking forward to it but I wont be watching any of it.

Believe me Abbott will be punished in T20 and ODI's....he is an average bowler....these type of bowlers are only successfull in their home grounds.

Abbott has a long way to go still, he will still have many bad days as well, hope people won't be yo-yo fans and call him the best when things go good then call for his head when things go bad,

@Kingsland.....You maybe right if Pak player shows their game they can win 2-0 and 5-0 but dont you think same goes for SA? If SA players show their game they can win it 2-0 and 5-0 as welll....But it wont happened like that...The contest would be really close. I hope SA wont experiment with their ODIs like they did against NZ. T20 is more of a flip of a coin...Lottery 50/50 for any teams. ODI would be close. But the real test is always the TEST cricket which shows how superior we are then Pak. @TommytuckerSaffa its better we did not have 5 test bcos sometimes its boring when the game finishes in 3-4 days. Pakistan does not have that temparament I would love to see 5 test matches between SA and OZs.

agree with saffa need more tests Proteas all the way!

@ soumyas - OK, before I conclude that your comment is just plain stupid, please explain. Let's wait and see indeed BEFORE we call him a "one match hero." On another note, am I the only one that wants to see Ryan McLaren go back to the domestic league for a while? He's far too inconsistent and leaks far to many runs. I think we've lost a few games that we should have won because of his inability to bowl at the death.

  • Ramu444 on February 27, 2013, 20:14 GMT

IMO he is far better bowler than Rory Kleinveldt,so he should be the first back up choice

  • TommytuckerSaffa on February 27, 2013, 18:15 GMT

5 match ODI and 2 match T20 series. What a waste of everyones time, why didnt we just have a 4 or 5 match test series instead with 3 ODIs tops.

    stop killing the game administrators
