Pakistani left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz has said he is desperate to bowl on the lively South African pitches, ahead of the limited-overs leg that starts on March 1. Riaz was not part of the Test side that was blanked 3-0 by South Africa and has worked hard on his fitness in this period.
"I am super fit at the moment and in the best form," Riaz said. "I have a lot to offer to my captain and coach. I am desperate to bowl on the surfaces in South Africa. I can bowl fast, and conditions are well suited for me to bowl reverse swing as well."
His last ODI appearance was against India during the Asia Cup in 2012. He was selected as part of the Pakistan squad that toured India in December last year, but didn't make it into the playing eleven. The selectors however, have retained him for the South Africa ODIs and T20s, and he is likely to make it to the XI.
Riaz admitted the time away from international cricket was frustrating, but he kept himself match fit. He recently recorded his best first-class figures of 9 for 59 in a Quaid-e-Azam trophy match.
"I have managed myself very well. I have been playing hockey for the last one-and-a-half months to build up my thighs for the South African grounds, which are a bit harder. I recently took nine wickets in an innings, which shows my form," he said. "It always feel good when the selectors tap your shoulder to give you a go, but it's frustrating when you are not able to make it to the XI."
Riaz, 27, impressed during his debut series 2008 against Zimbabwe. He also had a good start to Test cricket, taking a five-for against England in August 2010. He picked up his maiden ODI five-wicket haul during the World Cup semi-final against India, but was not able to cement his place.
"I know things weren't right sometimes, and I wavered and leaked so many runs," he said. "When you are representing your country, you are pumped up and trying to give your hundred per cent. Some days nothing works in your favour, but you move on and come back after working on your deficiency.
"Fast bowlers are always emotional and aggressive - they need time to settle. I still have a case to prove, and I believe this South Africa tour will be an ideal opportunity for me to showcase my abilities."

I am not sure how improved is Wahab now. Only speed is not good enough at this level. Good control, line & length and ability to swing the ball is essential at international level. Sami had pace but no control otherwise he would have been a success. Only time will tell how good is Wahab now. Bowlers like Philander, Wasim etc were not express pace but had great control and ability to swing (especially Wasim Akram with both, old and new ball). I am not saying Wahab should be as good as Wasim, Waqar etc however if he is half decent as those greats, he will have a good future ahead.
wahab will be Ok but Junaid Khan has recovered from injury. So it ll be a tough decision whom to be included in playing XI
Posted by RDLikesCricket on (March 1, 2013, 13:43 GMT)Did not see Pak use a lot of Junaid Khan in the Test series... he bowled well in India recently... Junaid, Riaz, Gul, Ajmal and Hafeez with support from Malik will be a good bowling combo... Hoping to see Pak give some grief to SA in the shorter formats... Good luck
Posted by keptalittlelow on (March 1, 2013, 11:07 GMT)Wahab Riaz will do well in the series I am sure. I think we should not let the humiliation in the test series impact the T20 and ODI series. England lost 3-0 against us in UAE still they came hard on us in T20 and ODIs and defeated us and were able to take something back. We need wins of any kind to restore our confidence.
Posted byriaz has a good chance pak should go after proteas
Posted byriaz is good bowler and PAK have quality 20/20 side they should make life tough for proteas this time
Posted by ABLcric on (March 1, 2013, 8:17 GMT)C'mon Boyz!! Just win one match and all mind set will change. Everyone (media, ex-cricketers, and public) will forget the Test matches. That's how it has been in Pakistan all the time. One good performance and "all is well". SA has been struggling lately in T20s and ODIs. Pakistan should strategize and take the advantage of their weaknesses. I think, the quality of fielding will determine the difference between both teams. Good Luck Pakistan!
Posted byI think choosing riaz is a nice idea... let irfan be there in playing eleven as we will have three quicks wahab irfan n gul so. saeed n hafeez for spin a very nice combination it will surely work...
Posted by Desihungama on (February 28, 2013, 21:02 GMT)If there is one erratic bowler, that's Wahab Riaz. Never understood when things don't go bowler's way why then bowl even faster and get smack for boundaries and extras? Everyone wants to be a Shoaib Akhtar in their own.
