Pakistanis 270 for 9 (Akmal 47, Farhat 40, Rehman 35*, Viljoen 3-29) beat South African Invitational XI 266 for 8 (De Kock 65, Bavuma 43) by one wicket

Pakistan held their nerve against a South African Invitational XI to win by one wicket in the final over in Kimberley. After choosing to bat, the hosts began well, with captain Stephen Cook and his opening partner Quinton de Kock adding 55 at better than a run a ball. De Kock went on to make a half-century and it seemed, at 170 for 3 in the 32nd over, that the South African side would be able to reach 300. In a final score of 266, de Kock was ultimately the only half-centurion; Temba Bavuma was next to him with 43, and Pakistan were able to give themselves a good shot at a successful chase.

Their openers delivered a strong start, Imran Farhat and Nasir Jamshed adding 53 in 9.4 overs. Kamran Akmal then made 47, adding 49 with Misbah-ul-Haq for the fourth wicket after Younis Khan had been dismissed for a duck. At 139 for 3 in the 26th over, Pakistan were on track, but they slipped to 189 for 7; two of those four wickets were claimed by legspinner Imran Tahir.

But Pakistan's lower order showed a lot of mettle, and Abdur Rehman and Umar Gul built a stand that revived hopes of victory. Rehman batted patiently to make an unbeaten 35, while Gul at the other end was more attacking, scoring 30 off 34, with four fours and a six. Pakistan were still in trouble when Gul fell with the score on 234, and the hosts were on the brink when they claimed the wicket of Wahab Riaz in the 46th over to make it 242 for 9. But Junaid Khan was reliable company for Rehman, and though the required-rate had touched almost six with just a wicket in hand, the pair guided Pakistan home.

In the final over bowled by Lizaad Williams, victory was sealed off the fourth delivery.

misba should drop forever why he is captain i dont know.Hafeez should be captain for odi.

Pack the team with some lefties to negate Steyns outswingers

1. Imran Farhat 2. Hafeez 3. Yunis Khan / Afridi (Open the innings and send Jamshed as one down) 4. Nasir Jamshed 5. Umar Akmal 6. Misbah Ul Haq 7. Kamran Akmal 8. Afridi / Asad Shafiq (can bat at 5 and Umar Akmal at 6) 8. Wahab Riaz / Rehman / Irfan 9. Junaid Khan 10. Umar Gul 11. Ajmal

Posted by kickassPakistan on (March 8, 2013, 17:39 GMT)

it would be a huge mistake not to include Ahmed Shezad in the team as he looked in prime form with his batting in the t20 match plus the two fabulous catches that he took. the team needs to respect the form on the tour and should be brave enough to be a bit imaginative with their thinking.

Posted by Crick_Expert on (March 8, 2013, 17:23 GMT)

PAK Team will face SA strongest bowling in ODI series. PAK Team should add more batsmen in the team, the team should be as; 1)Nasir 2)Imran Farhat 3)Hafeez 4)Younis 5)K. Akmal 6)Mibah 7) Shoaib 8)Afridi 9)Junaid 10) Ifran 11)U. Akmal

Saeed/Rehman should give rest in ODI series. And should utilized following 5 bowlers only; Hafeez, Afridi, Shoaib = Spin Bowlers Irfan, Junaid = Fast Bowlers

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (March 8, 2013, 10:48 GMT)

My team for 1st odi would be: (1) Nasir Jamshed (2) Kamran Akmal (3) Hafeez (4) Asad Shafeeq (5) Misbah (6) Umar Akmal (7) Afridi/malik (8) Gul (9) Ajmal/ Rehman (10) Junaid Khan (11) Irfan

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 20:02 GMT)

pak odi team should b hafeez, nasir, ahmed shahzad, asad shafiq or umer akmal, misbah, afridi, kamran, ajmal or rehman, gul, junaid, wahab or irfan

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 18:50 GMT)

Pakistani team should play aggressively to beat S A and this cannot be possible in the presence of Misbah because he is not a brave man which cannot do this. Misbah you learn from Smith. Shahid Afridi or Shoaib Malik is better captain than Misbah, PCB is responsible for this performance.

Posted by t20cric on (March 7, 2013, 18:42 GMT)

This win too close for Pakistan but then again almost every match where Pakistan chase they end up winning at the last second. I agree that Misbah shouldn't play ODIs anymore but I think he is still good for tests. The thing is that if he retires then who will become Pakistan's ODI captain after he retires?

I think Pakistan shouldn't be afraid of dropping players who aren't playing good. Afridi played alright in the tour match but if he doesn't bowl or bat good then he can be replaced by Abdur Rehman who is also a spinner and he can bat pretty well to like he showed in this match. I think Ahmed Shehzad should play instead of Imran Farhat cuz he played great in the T20 and if Hafeez fails to perform against Steyn again then he should be replaced. Also Kamran Akmal should bat 3rd cuz he showed that it he is good in third. Shoab Malik should be dropped for the rest of the series, Umar Akmal should be replaced by Shafiq if he doesn't bat good

Posted by Ibrarhunzai on (March 7, 2013, 18:29 GMT)

Hafeez is in good form and i think he will play steyn a bit better this time round as white ball does not move as the red ball does. I think he will score in ODI's. Kamran needs to come on number 3 as he has failed miserably down the order. And, i wish Ahmed Shahzad play few games in ODI's, shown some good form.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 16:28 GMT)

All that Pakistan camp needs to know for ODI series is that Steyn will be back, and Hafeez will be lucky to survive 4 balls. With Amla, Smith, and Kallis back in the line up, Pakistan will lose the ODI series 5-0.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 16:01 GMT)

Misbah should be dropped from ODI squad and Test Captaincy, he can play as a Test player. Afridi should be ODI captain and Younis should be the Test Captain as if Misbah will play like this not every time Gul and Rehman will be able to save us.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 15:56 GMT)

My 1st ODI 11 would be:

1- Nasir Jamshed, 2- Ahmed Shehzad, 3- Mohammad Hafeez, 4- Asad Shafiq, 5-Misbah ul Haq (c), 6- Shoaib Malik, 7- Kamran Akmal, 8- Umar Gul, 9- Saeed Ajmal, 10- Junaid Khan, 11- Mohammad Irfan.

Posted by vaqarmalik on (March 7, 2013, 15:41 GMT)

I did not see a mention of a Record that was made by Pakistan when they bashed SA on 74 balls in the only T20 ..... the lowest number of balls a team was bowled out in any international format of the game ... previously it was England that bowled out SA on 75 balls. For details;ballsval1=balls;class=11;event=1;filter=advanced;orderby=balls;orderbyad=reverse;result=2;template=results;type=team;view=match

Many people are saying that we should throw Younis and Misbah BOTH out and bring Umar Akmal in . Comon guys talk some sense . Without atleast one cool and calm senior the team will go even down . And Umar Akmal doesn't deserves a chance anymore . If he wants to get back , he better learn to handle responsibility .

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 14:28 GMT)

No place for Misbah and Younas Khan in the team. Time to get rid of them ASAP. Bring in Umar Akmal and Shahzad.

Posted by Crick_Expert on (March 7, 2013, 14:07 GMT)

PAK ODI Team should be as 1)Nasir 2)Imran Farhat 3)Hafeez 4)Younis 5)Kamran 6)Umar /Sohaib 7)Misbah 8)Afridi 9)Rehman/Saeed 10)Junaid 11)Irfan

Unimpressive show by Pakistanis! They still look far from settled.

Posted by xylofon on (March 7, 2013, 13:39 GMT)

It looks as if Pakistan first need a disaster to happen before they will make the necessery hard decision - to say no to Misbah & Younis. Also: Umar Akmal, NO THANK YOU. Kamran I dont like either but he is ok batsman.

My ODI batting lineup:

Azhar Ali, Babar Azam (best batsman in Pakistan by miles), Asad Shafiq, Nasir Jamshed, Fawad Alam.

I could include Ahmed shehzad because of being in form, let him come in at nr 6 to smash a few at the end or during the second powerplay.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 13:38 GMT)

I think we need to try kamran akmal and jamshed as openers, hafeez can strengthen his position on number 3, umar akmal and asad shafiq should be tried on 3 , otherwise bring umar amin, misbah is good for 5, shoaib malik 6, afridi 7, ajmal 8, wahab riaz 9, junaid 10, irfan 11.

Posted by Albert_cambell on (March 7, 2013, 13:34 GMT)

We should not underestimate Pakistan ODIs. In Odis they are very competitive. Remember we underestimated the Kiwis and we lost the series. I hope we dont do the same mistake again.

After having gone through some of the comments here, I wanted to give this common reply. True that there are too many similer type of players. Regarding Misbah & Younis, I think they can continue in the Test format for 12 to 18 months MAX. But they should be dropped immediately from the ODI squads. This will give some breathing space for another similer player - S.Mallik who is already similer in style & utility to Hafeez.

Regarding Umar Akmal, I think Misbah may prefer Asad Shafiq instead. This we can say from the India experience. Anyways, the Akmal brothers have had far too many opportunities & they all throw their wickets carelessly.

In the bowling I hope W.Riaz does not come in at the cost of Junaid or Irfan. Regarding A.Rehman - already far too many spinners & all-rounders in the team (Ajmal-Hafeez-Afridi-Mallik) . Can't see how one more spinner comming in. Also I think Mallik should be used as an all-rounder.

Posted by Solid_Snake on (March 7, 2013, 10:46 GMT)

Team Pakistan is so unbalanced.. Jamshed,Farhat & Hafeez fighting or the opening slot..Put Sheszad in & you got another contender.. Both Akmal Brothers are fighting for the 3rd place.. Then comes the battle of middle order in which Shoaib,Afridi comes.. Kamran Akmal always proved himself as a great opener. He wont get that chance so he is being wasted.Even if he is given a chance as an opener,he will take away the seat of any other deserving player..I dont know how Pak manage their players.Team is so unbalanced. So many same type of players included in the team & most of them dont even know their role till the very end

Posted by zarasochozarasamjho on (March 7, 2013, 10:34 GMT)

Younis Khan has been a constant recent failure. Even in tests, he fails a lot more than perform. He should no longer be in the team - in any format!

Posted by malepas on (March 7, 2013, 10:05 GMT)

I think PAK ODI team is not in good shape for a while, PAK has problems with its very sedate middle order with Misbah & Younas, and not enough strength in lower order which used to be thier strength with Afridi & Razzaq(Afridi not perfroming anymore). I can't understand, why Misbah wants to play ODI's, considering he would be 41 on next worldcup?? I think Hafeez should take over as captain which will allow Pak to play Umer & Asad in the middle,Afridi is no longer a viable option with BAT so he should be replaced, I think PAK must invest with Hammad as an fast bowling allrounder be patient with him, he has the goods to deliver, Ahmed shahzad should play ODI's,we know that every batsman has its prime time and he is in his prime at the moment. I think PAK must play Kami at the top as he is waste in the lower order.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 10:00 GMT)

Misbah should say Goodbye to cricket now, he has been wasting a spot for sometime now, People look at his average and say that he is a fine player but i can't remember a match wining or match saving innings from him in the recent times. Ahmed Shahzad is a fine fine player and he is in form, umar amin, asad shafiq and umar akmal are also knocking at the doors, we cant just keep playing these old player till the next world cup.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 9:25 GMT)

in one dayers, rahman should be in with ajmal, and basically, he should be in tests too. we are wasting umar akmal. he is a confidence player so, he should be in always! otherwise he will continue to lack confidence if he is not certain for his place. yes, as a lot of people are saying, we should say bye bye to younis and misbah. clicking once in a blue moon is not enough for their presence claim.even afridi is not required if he doesnt do good in these matches.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 8:46 GMT)

Good but not the best, Pakistan Should have chased that with 4 wickets in hand. Good to See Afridi on track with 43 in 10 overs with 1 Wicket and scoring 29 of 19. That's maximum we can get from him and its ridiculous to expect more from him when bating Specialist Younis Khan and Misbah are not scoring as per requirement.

Posted by SaadRocx on (March 7, 2013, 8:40 GMT)

For God's sake Hafeez please don't open the can't face the new ball...Hafeez needs to bat at #3 or #6 and Kamran Akmal should either open the innings or should bat top the order..cauz he can atleast slog on new ball..unlike Hafeez who gets out within an over or two..and puts burden on the entire team...PAKISTAN NEEDS TO BE AGGRESSIVE..LIKE THEY WERE IN T20's...otherwise i would not be surprised if Pak gets hammered 4-1..

Posted by TommytuckerSaffa on (March 7, 2013, 8:36 GMT)

de kock gets runs again - 65 and looks great for a 20 year old. Yet, he is still isnt picked for the ODI Squad. Why do SA management and Selectors do this to us. Why cant we just pick the best available!!??

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (March 7, 2013, 8:29 GMT)

Ahmad Shahzad should have been kept in one dayers as well. For this series kamran should open as he is useless down in the order. send him up and ask him to give a go.. (1) Kamran Akmal (2) Nasir Jamshed (3) Hafeez (4) Asad Shafeeq (5) Misbah (6) Umar Akmal (7) Afridi (8) gul (9) Ajmal/Rehman (10) Junaid Khan (11) Irfan

I wonder if Quinton de Kock would be kept out of other national teams?

Posted by ICCexpert.... on (March 7, 2013, 8:07 GMT)

Misbah is blocking youngsters for 2015 world cup, Ahmad Shahzad deserves to be in the team, its total injustice by PCB. Misbah please retire.....thanks

Posted by duncanmoo on (March 7, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

Good for Pak that all the batsmen had some time at the crease, a walkover is not actually good practice.

De Kock continues to show batting maturity beyond his years, an exciting prospect! Viljoen, awesome bowling figures; Selectors use these games to test SA pipeline.

Posted by kami_alvi on (March 7, 2013, 7:55 GMT)

Younis Khan should not be the part of One day XI for Pakistan as his stats suggests, instead Umar Akmal / Asad Shafiq should play. Also Ahmed Shahzad should be included in the One day squad too!

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 6:39 GMT)

I think Imran Farhat is playing fine & deserves a chance. Ahmed Shehzad shud be in for Younis Khan & they Kamran Akmal shud play up the order. There is no point playing him down the line.

Posted by ColJJ on (March 7, 2013, 6:29 GMT)

Well it is always morale boosting to win prior to an important series or event. But we should never forget that it was a weaker side that pushed us to to our toes and we hardly managed to home with a nail biter. A mistake to take Imran Farhat in 11 knowingly that he is not going to make XI in ODI's and an infamous middle order failure must be a worry for skipper and Dev. Overall an awesome winn after SA Invit. XI were sniffing victory: well done guys keep up good work.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2013, 5:45 GMT)

ahmad shahzad is good and young opener and better choice for opening and mishab should be retire from the ODI format immediately

Posted by Dil-Dil-Pakistan on (March 7, 2013, 5:38 GMT)

It is a good win for Pakistan in this formate Pakistan totaly defrnt team i like Pakistani perfomis in this formate and i wish best of luck for upcoming Series.

Thanks Cricinfo !! You guys are no doubt the best !!

only one area of concern, why Imran Farhat in ODIs...? Pakistan need to bring Ahmad Shehzad for opening, he is younger and deserve a chance. for God sake if we have Afridi and Hafeez in the lineup then include four pacers. this is South Africa and we cant win by spin bowling.
