Pakistan's decision to include an extra pace bowler paid off as they levelled the series against South Africa in a rain-affected match, reduced to 44 overs a side, in Centurion. Mohammed Irfan was chiefly responsible for dismantling South Africa's top order and contributions from all of the top six ensured Pakistan's chase was comfortable in the end.

South Africa lost the match when they slumped to 62 for 5, even though Farhaan Behardien and the bowlers gave them some chance of fighting back. Behardien stoically clambered out of trouble and featured in two important partnerships while achieving his career-best score but the total was still less than satisfactory. South Africa defended aggressively and it was not until the 33rd over that the contest was truly decided.

It was then that Shoaib Malik slammed four boundaries off Lonwabo Tsotsobe to seal the advantage Irfan had given them upfront. Irfan extracted significant bounce from the Centurion surface in an extended seven-over spell.

His incision began when he removed Hashim Amla and Colin Ingram in successive balls in the eighth over. Amla thrived briefly against the short ball but then inside-edged through to Kamran Akmal while Ingram was out on review, adjudged caught-behind by the third umpire even though Hot Spot did not confirm an edge.

The best example of the impact the extra bounce had on batsmen was in AB de Villiers' dismissal; he was undecided and edged to second slip. By the time Irfan had swooped on Faf du Plessis' leading edge, Graeme Smith's dismissal was already forgotten and South Africa were in some trouble. Smith did not look comfortable against the back-of-a-length approach and mistimed an attempted hook to gift Akmal another catch.

Behardien, who plays his domestic cricket at SuperSport Park, found himself in a situation that called for two qualities he is best known for: temperament and grind. He coped well against the spinners and managed not to get too tied down by lack of boundaries.

Between the 19th and 35th over, the rope was only breached three times, largely thanks to Mohmmad Hafeez. He rushed through the overs and limited batsmen's scoring options but Behardien and Ryan McLaren were still able to put on 44 before the latter was trapped lbw.

South Africa went one better, though. Berhardien and Peterson put on 67 runs in 18 overs and although the going was slow, they worked on strike rotation until Gul was brought back. Peterson opened up against him, with some risk, and also notched up his highest ODI score.

With the storm brewing and frustration building for Behardien, he tried to clear midwicket off Hafeez. He was caught on the boundary a ball before the Highveld thunderstorm arrived to lash his home ground and cause a delay of almost two and a half hours.

On resumption, South Africa resorted to blocking and Pakistan conceded only 14 runs more runs, bowling the hosts out with four balls remaining.

With a manageable required-rate of 4.36 facing them, Pakistan's openers were more concerned with survival than speed, especially Hafeez. Dale Steyn, who dismissed him four times in the Test series, was back in the attack and Hafeez treated him with due respect. McLaren dropped a catch offered by Hafeez off Kyle Abbott, but bowled the next over and made up for his blunder when he had Nasir Jamshed caught at slip.

Akmal was promoted to No.3 and it seemed a good decision. After a streaky opening, he built a stand with Hafeez and the pair scored briskly to push Pakistan along. Hafeez eventually fell to his nemesis as he chipped Steyn to midwicket. Steven gave him a five-finger sendoff to remind him of the number of times he has taken his wicket on this tour.

South Africa were given a small opening when Kamran tried to smack Peterson over midwicket but the ball rolled onto his stumps. At 69 for 3, they hoped to force an implosion but Pakistan's experienced hands were up for it. Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq batted together for most of the 10 overs in which Pakistan did not find a boundary and coped with good lengths from Abbott and McLaren. Misbah eventually broke the pressure with a six over long-off.

Their partnership was worth 46 and looked good to go on for more but Younis fell to a full toss. After taking six off the first two balls of Peterson's seventh over, he swept one straight to Amla at deep square leg.

The match was in the balance again with Misbah and Shoaib Malik forced to lie low until Malik was ready to pounce. Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who was brought back for a second spell, slid two down the leg side, and Malik helped himself to boundaries. Then he got two more, to third man and point off short and wide balls and the winner was evident.

It still needed Misbah and Malik to apply final rites and the captain did so in particularly impressive fashion. He dispatched Peterson over midwicket for a six and and four and brought up a half-century to see Pakistan home and take an even contest to the Wanderers on Sunday.

I think SHOAIB MALIK Played a Decisive Knock under pressure.

Best of luck for Pakistan team

Posted by UK_Chap on (March 16, 2013, 23:34 GMT)

Joe Thompson : Why do SA fans always come out with excuses for every loss, rather than just congratulate the winning team for a good performance, it really is poor show on your behalf. You talk about luck, there is a new ball used from each end, but Dale Steyn continued to moan about the ball until they changed it for him and immediately and amazingly the ball started to move around. SA fans always seem to think their team has been hard done by, maybe you simply need grow up and be a little more gracious in defeat.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 19:41 GMT)

I think victory credit should be given to our bowlers. They gave batsmen to chase a small total with run rate under five. Misbah in this inning played like a captain. Shoaib Malik gave him good support. One of the worrying factor is loosing wicket after settling down. They should learn to finish match without depending on other batsmen.pakistan has to play aggressively and attack sensibly to repeat this performance.I would like to see Imran Farhat and Wahab Riaz in place of Nasir Jamshed and Umer Gul. go green go, best of luck.

Posted by Desihungama on (March 16, 2013, 13:53 GMT)

@getsetgopk - They (SA+Umpires) didn't factor in that poor ball would be getting hit out of the park by Pak batsmen little too often. I think it lost the shape. We call it hammering.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 13:51 GMT)

The problem with Misbah is that he's poor at taking singles and doubles. He either goes into a shell (TUK TUK) or hits big sixes. I agree with most of the ppl here saying that if the S.Africans had scored above 250, Pak wld have never been able to chase the target. We need players who can score quickly, like U.Akmal and Shehzad. Even Malik is better than Yunus and Misbah as he can at least score quick runs. Gone are the days when teams used to save wickets and accelerated during the last ten overs. Pak need to change their style of batting, and try to chase targets under 250 consistently.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 12:38 GMT)

umar akmal has become just a bowler of T20 format... he should b excluded from tests and ODIs... pakistan's defeat against South Africa is the result of some top class bowling by rivals and also some bad selection and careless batting by misbah

Posted by Stark62 on (March 16, 2013, 11:03 GMT)

Umar Akmal is the best limited overs batsmen in the Pak camp (barring Nasir) and needs to be in the playing 11, whether he takes the spot from Hafeez, Younis, Malik or even Misbah because none of them are better than him.

Posted by likeintcricket on (March 16, 2013, 10:57 GMT)

I agree with the SA folks that Pakistan is a better side in shorter format but their defeats in the Test is due to bad selection and lack of practice. The second Test was the turning point otherwise the third Test could became more contesting. I still believe in the abilities of Asad, Azhar and Nasir in all formats but they were provided with very few opportunities to set their feet before the Test. India's reversal against AUS is an ideal example. Playing Stein and company on fast pitches is hard for any team but Pak could have won the second test easily if they had selected another spinner. I am not confident with seven bowlers strategy of Misbah as their was no one to defend today had they lost one more wicket. It is not easy to drop Afridi or Gul but If I am the captain I would made Afridi to sit on fast tract and Gul on slower one and bring Umer Akmal in.

@Mohammad Musa Khan: if pakistan will chase a big total like 300, they will never win, because of misbah!! look at the first game. and yesterday he was lucky because of the dew in the second innings and the great pakistani bowling. 192 was easy to score. misbah will never be like smith, dhoni or clarke. these are true captains.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 10:07 GMT)

these are pakistani fans first the pakistani fans used to say that razzaq should be thrown out of the team when he wasnt performing in the years 2008-09 and they also used to say that he should retire he is finished but then he scored a blistering century against saf in dubai and then these same fans said oh he is the greatest hitter and bla bla bla its easy to criticize some one in his bad times!! pakistani fans are doing the same thing to misbah and they dont realize how valuable he is for the team!! mark my words this misbah will make pakistan win the champions trophy in june!! u wil think i m mad but believe me next champions trophy is ours!! support all members of pakistan team including the captain especially!!

Best of Luck Team Green (Pakistan) for the Rest of ODI's

Posted by I_m_AKS on (March 16, 2013, 9:42 GMT)

The 7-feet giant should continue in the shorter formats but not in test, he is not fit enough in the longer version as his fielding abilities might hurt PAK.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 9:26 GMT)

Lopsy -Cricket is a Gentleman's game .Your reaction to Shoaib was ridiculous and should that thrashing like a sportsman.......very disappointed .....maybe you should sit out the next couple of ODIs and become a Gentleman first.

Posted by M.gundroo on (March 16, 2013, 9:25 GMT)

pakistan with its poor batting line up will always do well in low scoring matches. There are no reliable master blasters. They are only capable of scoring 20/40 runs at best at medium tuk tuk rate. They will always struggle to score 250 outside Asian subcontinent. With this win some of them have booked a place for next couple of games. In a perverse way a defeat might have for better for the team to prepare for next world cup .Younus, Misbah and Mlik are not going to be around for next world cup. SA are also in a fix if they win the toss next time! If they bat first they will have threat Irfan and co and if they field they have the threat of spinners they prefer not to face while chasing. A good position for Pakistan otherwise for SA it was always, bat first.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 9:22 GMT)

Well Played Pakistan, It shows South Africa can be beaten, if you show the positive attitude for winning the match.

Posted by SaadRocx on (March 16, 2013, 9:21 GMT)

Sack Umer Gul and Put Wahab Riaz..seriously and Hafeez should bat and #3 let Kamran Akmal and Nasir Jamshed Open..2ndly i think Umer Akmal should be in the team..and what a Fantastic Bowling Performance by Pakistan. :P SA tail bats soo long..even when you get top 5 out the next 5 chips in and let the scoreboard ticking...Bowling Out SA for 190/10 is not a Joke...need more consistency in batting though :P Good Luck Green Team.

Posted by I_m_AKS on (March 16, 2013, 9:09 GMT)

There is no doubt with the capabilities of PAK in the shorter formats but it was their best chance to pull off a surprise in the test series, I thought they were the best team to beat SA from subcontinent but their their batting truly awful. BOL for the remaining ODIs....

well well, there was mention of sound in mid inings article of ingram dismissal but over here it sounded as there was no sound and no hotspot.

OH yes , smith "GIFTED" catch & nasir jamshed's was bowlers brilliance? pretty biased reporting.

why are you playing 7 bowlers when your batting is an issue? unfortunatly Pakistan's all allrounders at the moment are spin bowlers.. Pakistan must find a replacement of Abdur razzaq. anyways well bowled Irfan, Junaid, Hafeez and ajmal. Pakistan must drop gul now and get some else. also drop a spin allrounder and get umar Akmal in.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 8:19 GMT)

@Saqib M Ibrahim ; south africa is no.4 ODI team not no.1

Posted by getsetgopk on (March 16, 2013, 8:13 GMT)

The way the South Africans were shouting round the Pakistan batsmen, it sounded like it was a rugby game and not the gentlemans game which is a bit unfortunate really. Africans are learning that art from the Aussies pretty quickly. And why did they change the ball? Africans new it would rain latter, they won the toss and they decided to bat first. Now when you do that, there are big size towels for cleaning the ball. 44 overs game, so a ball would only be used for 22 overs? We play in dew here in sub continent, both teams are aware of the due factor and they use towels to clean the ball, never have the asked the umpires to give us a new one, unless the batsmen complain that they can't see the ball but that was when one ball was used for all 50 overs, usually around the 35 over mark the ball would loose its color and would be difficult to see. Now there are a max of 25 overs, you can't grip the ball because its wet is not a valid reason for changing the ball, use the towel, period.

low scoring games r d most tough finishes... :) WELL DONE TEAM PAKISTAN :)

Posted by deconstruct on (March 16, 2013, 8:05 GMT)

Samroy, for once, I totally agree with an Indian [just kidding - :) ]. Pakistan has arguably the best bowling attack for limited overs cricket (be it T20 or ODI), but this attack lacks penetration in test matches, particularly outside thier comfort zone, which includes UAE. Batting is certainl the weakest amongst top test playing nations. Hafeez, for instance, is a useful player in limited overs cricket, but has no place in the test side, either as a bowler or batsman. Umar Gul should, from now on, only be considered for T20's. Misbah may not be the crowd's choice, but without him, this Pakistan side cannot even last 50 overs!

Posted by Major85D on (March 16, 2013, 7:33 GMT)

Lucky day for misbah. In the second innings there was a little bit dew, so it was very difficult for the south african bowlers to take wickets. It was easy for misbah to score. Pakistan won the match because of their bowling. Btw the south african batsmen had a very bad day. Don`t cheer misbah too much, south africa will come back and win on sunday. And then you can see the real tuk tuk misbah.

Posted by dmqi on (March 16, 2013, 7:24 GMT)

I saw 3 irresponsible shots at the crucial times of the match that was totally unnecessary. First by Hafiz ( do not call him professor call school teacher), 2nd by Kamran, the hopeless guy and finally by Younus Khan, the real batsman. Why do you have to do that when you can have patients to win comfortably. Drop afridi/gul and bring Umar in the next match. Misbah saved the match today.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 7:20 GMT)

WellDone Pakistan! :) :) :)

"Well played Pakistan....Definitely they deserves a standing ovation...They have outclassed Sa in all the departments....And as far as Misbah's knock is concerned;he has made all his critics quiet after this particular knock....he is an impact full player....though he never looks beautiful but he is having his own way of playing and more or less that man has kept his team from all the other controversies and lobbying...That is one of his biggest achievement!"....

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 6:58 GMT)

I can say with gr8 surety that It is MIsbah due to his Pak team Plays more overs and stay for long on wkt.......... if there is no Misbah Pak will get out within 30 overz whether there are Akmal bros, asad, Hafeez, Jamshed and moreover Afridi..... Afridi is a joke with the Bat...........he scored 34 on 16 and people are happy despite the fact Pak lost the game....he didnot tried to take gamecloser to victory.......he is an over rated batsman.... who has no sense of batting...look at duminy, steve smith, samuels, bravo, razzaq, yuvraj, watson allthese are all rounders...far ahead of Afridi.and u talk abt his bowling....hahahaha... that was a purple patch between 2009- 2011 world cup apart from that he has struggled in his 16 years long career.......... i love pak cricket but to admire somebody on his repu rather performance is mere stupidity

Posted by SamRoy on (March 16, 2013, 6:54 GMT)

I am an Indian and I will always admit that Pakistan has the best bowling lineup for limited overs cricket. For test cricket though they need couple of good pacers beside Junaid Khan (even though Rahat took a six-for he isn't all that good and Irfan's fitness in tests will be a major problem in the long term). And not picking Abdul Rehman cost them the second test. In the other two tests they had zero chance of winning given their fragile batting techniques.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 6:52 GMT)

PCB has no future planning. There is no captain under preparation for world cup 2015.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 6:38 GMT)

Misbah began to remind his early days when he was hitting the ball over bounday quite often.... he played well in two ODIs..... is it the twilight zone of Misbah's career......

Posted by Travian.Cricket on (March 16, 2013, 6:20 GMT)

@All Critics . Mark my words . The moment Misbah is removed from the team will be the moment Pakistan batting line-up collapses . Only Asad Shafiq is the player that deserves a chance he isn't getting . U.Akmal is quite irresponsible and he needs some good F.C perfomances to back him up .

Posted by Sports4Youth on (March 16, 2013, 5:30 GMT)

Why was M.Irfan not given any more batting after his initial 7 overs burst? He was left stranded with his 4 wickets. Everybody will agree that after getting his 4 wickets so early he definately deserved a fifer.

The most useless bowler turned out to be Umar Gul.

I have always insisted that he is just a T20 bowler. outside of the T20's his utility reduces drastically.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 4:57 GMT)

It was good match for Pakistan but they have no planning of bowling in a tempo of consistent pressure. It was SA batsmen played edgy strokes on uneven track.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 4:52 GMT)

I am unable to uderstand that whenever PCB announced to filter out old people from the team then instantly every senior guy starts to give performance just to save his position. But I am not happy with this because due to just one match performance they will stick again for next 20 matches which is purely unfair with new talent. Especially a big question mark on Shoaib Malik and kamran Akmal. Any one can give one match performace after a large number of contineous matches being a part of team even just under 19 player can do it like this.

Posted by Farhan166 on (March 16, 2013, 4:45 GMT)

Now where are all the so called experts who were certain of 5-0 whitewash of Pak by SA in the ODIs series. In cricket even the experts are not really experts.

Posted by Shahbaz Alam on (March 16, 2013, 4:44 GMT)

Nice to see some positivity in Pak. approach. Sending Kami at No.3, Misbah hitting sixs and Malik as i early said a pure match winner and most utility player in present pak side. Guys plz not too harsh on Kami he needs some confidence what happend to Dhoni in recent tests(nearly 7,8 missed chances Vs. Aus., even AB missed chances why you only blam Kami after all he is also a human. Crictics receive answers about malik. BEST OF LUCK

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 4:33 GMT)

Enough with MISBAH haters now.. He is the One right now who is performing Constantly with Cool Head..everyone knows how brittle is Pakistani Batting lineup at times.. so he has to play according to the Situation.. HE KNOWS MORE CRICKET THAN THE ONES WATCHING HIM.. so Let him play his way.. :D

nd People still don't realize that ODI is not Played Like T20.. u have to Play Slow in Middle overs.. as almost every Team do.. nd Misbah does it very efficiently.. People want him to play in fast mode from start.. if he gets out that way.. then People Criticize him for playing fast.. :D ..

Haters gonna hate u Misbah.. but u Still Rock.. People will realize ur Worth after u get Retirement.. nd there's no one around to stay on crease..

#RESPECT4youMISBAH :)

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 4:00 GMT)

I think there are two reasons for SA's defeat in second ODI.First SA' captain and team were over confident of their success in first ODI.Second reason Pakistan' s aggressive batting and bowling. If you look at the dismissal of SA's top six batsmen you will find out their cavliar approach in their batting.Irfan and. Junaid khan has exploited early moisture in wicket and bounce intelligently.SA captain opted for bat first because of weather forecast and over confident in their batting.Pakistan' decesion to include irfan and sending Kamran Akmal on no.3 paid off.I suggest Pakistan should replace Jamshed with Imran farhat and give Wahab Riaz chance to give Umer Gul rest on Sundays match.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 3:59 GMT)

This is what we expect from Pakistan, at least show some resistance against No 1 team. This team have done well, congrats guys! for the next time replace Afridi or Malik with a 100% batsman.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 3:50 GMT)

Malik played a good supportive innings, however it was under no serious pressure. Need to utilise Umar Akmal more, hes our best ranked batsman and needs to be cultured from series like these if hes to perform well in big tournaments. Either drop malik or younis khan for akmal. Youth for old

Posted by umar.khalil on (March 16, 2013, 3:43 GMT)

For a start Pakistan got their bowling selection right by including Irfan as a third seamer. Malik is not a specialist batsman, Pak need Asad Shafiq or Umar Akmal in the team in place of him. Misbah ul Haq played a captains innings and led from the front as he has done on numerous occasions in the past, very well paced and calculated innings. Well done Captain Kool..!! For S.A, this match gave them a glimpse of life after J Kallis's retirement. They also lack a world class spinner.

Posted by Cricket_Man on (March 16, 2013, 3:40 GMT)

Umar Gul should be dropped. Throughout this tour he has only bowled well in the T20 match and that too because of poor South African batting. Give Wahab Riaz a chance in the next match. Gul has been given enough chances. Ifran was the real difference between the two teams because no other bowler extracted the bounce from the pitch the way Irfan did.

Posted by Abbasuop on (March 16, 2013, 3:31 GMT)

It was a pair of Misbah and Malik which give a victory to pakistan.. if any of these guy would have gone,, then pakistan certainly have to loos cz there is no temperament in players like afridi... Abdur Rehmn should be in for afridi in coming games.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 3:25 GMT)

Well a good match, I would say. Pakistan putting pressure on South Africa (69 for 5), SA fighting back by building to partnerships, rain making difficulties as if the overs would have been 50 SA could have gone to touch 230 or240 . They were all out because the batsmen lost their tuch with the 2 hour break, SA putting pressure on pak by bowling , pak fighting back but wickets falling, senior players batting getting their job done, PAK WINNING!!! Credit to Misbah hafeez and shoaib Malik . The big man irfan excellent bowling on a good batting track. I don't understand why all akmals are not playing. Jamshed was disappointing. Imran farhat should be given a chance in the 3rd ODI and Jamshed should sit on the benches.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 3:19 GMT)

A victory..... very well done. But this shouldn't mean that we are a good side. Misbah, Younis should be dropped. We didn't attack enough with the ball and it was gonna be another messed up chase by misbah but Malik which Malik saved.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 3:13 GMT)

Haha I love this: ''Hafeez eventually fell to his nemesis as he chipped Steyn to midwicket. Steven gave him a five-finger sendoff to remind him of the number of times he has taken his wicket on this tour.''

But what I love more is the fact that i - we WON THE MATCH ii - my namesake was man of the match iii- and MIBAH silenced his critics yet again! :D

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 3:01 GMT)

pakistan is happy to win but this is not what every one expecting to be ,first thing the team need a complete transformation and make a team for the future big tournaments and kick out the old and struggling players like misbah and younis and any one who is struggling

Posted by riz309 on (March 16, 2013, 2:43 GMT)

Well played Pakistan i am just unable to understand why Pakistan's management is not putting their confidence in their squad this Irfan guy should had been included.. in the first test as well as in the first ODI.Well Pakistan beat SA in the previous T20 in this same ground massively the reaction of some SA fans were ohh.. its hit and giggle or a lottery or anybody can whack a ball, after their performance in this 2nd ODI they were absolutely right, what really irks me is either don't play T20 or ODI'S and if they really wanna play these formats then plz don't give this impression that SA is not taking T20 and ODI seriously

Posted by Pakfan1947 on (March 16, 2013, 2:21 GMT)

Pakistan won remarkably but umpiring is still sub standard. If Younus Khan not review the umpire decision, Pakistan will be in big trouble.

Posted by Desihungama on (March 16, 2013, 2:17 GMT)

Pak must persist with but preserve M. Irfan at any cost. I don't know how long will he play for but it's been a while in fact since M. Amir that Pak can really boast another bowler as their major trump card. Please get Ahmad Shehzad in for Kamran and groom Umar as your keeper. He knows a thing about keeping. He can certainly improve. I don't know why SA fans were so up on Beherdien, he seems to be another Faf du like player. SA is developing a very good core of players. Next WC is wide open for any team to win. Considering it is in Aus/Nz, IMO good bowling will be more effective than good batting.

Posted by   on (March 16, 2013, 1:01 GMT)

Pakistan are lucky because of the rain but the difference between the 2 teams is that Pakistan is an old team in fact dee oldest of all teams. Misbah the oldest member of the team had to save them otherwise another loss.

If Mohammad Irfan Could just keep him self fit for at leat five years, He could become Pakistans One of Great Bowler , He Has All the potential in Bowling But Have to work very hard on His FITNESS ,

@hamqad Couldn't agree more, this innings doesn't prove anything, Malik and Afridi are past it Malik especially, he can't bowl to save his life and Umar is a much better batsman with age on his side, can't for the life of me understand what he's doing in the team wish we would stop this latest trend of recycling tried and tested average players.

Misbah You beauty ! LONG LIVE MISBAH

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 23:55 GMT)

It is good to see Team Pakistan win second ODI. I am specially please for Misbah who not only always leads from the front albeit at his pace but is also one of three best captains Pakistan has produced since 1967. The other two being Mushtaq Mohammed and Imran Khan but they had better gifted players in their team. However, this in my opinion is still not the best XI. For the third ODI I would have Umar Akmal in place of Afridi and Wahab for Junaid. Even though Team Pakistan won today they were one specialist batsman short. Umar Akmal after all is Team Pakistan's highest ranking batsman in ODIs. Wahab is definitely a better batsman than Junaid and we need to have tailenders also contributing towards scoring runs. In the bowling I do not think there is much to choose between Wahab and Junaid. The three pacemen and two spinners should be sufficient for Pakistan. Team Pakistan do not need Afridi's bowling & his batting is very unreliable. Malik would be 6th bowler in case of need.

Posted by keptalittlelow on (March 15, 2013, 23:50 GMT)

Pakistan won great, but it was a misery watching Misbah batting, he masterfully created a great deal of prssure on Pakistan, if it was not for the Malik's four FOURS in the Tsosobe over Pakistan might have lost, thanks to Misbah again.

Posted by RaadQ on (March 15, 2013, 23:45 GMT)

Good move by Pak to promote Kamran up the order, where he can slog and make a few runs. Pakistan should groom Umar Akmal for the W/K batsman role in ODI and Test matches, and leave Kamran for T20. But atleast they are utilising Kamran better now. Despite Malik's good innings, I am still against the idea of having three spinning all-rounders, particularly in the long run. Either Malik or Afridi have to go eventually.

Posted by Mastcricmast on (March 15, 2013, 23:42 GMT)

Its fine and dandy that Pak won the the game, congrat!! But how about considering few other options. Why Ahmad Shezad was not considered to even stay with team after the 20/20 serirs. I think Shezad should be considered to open. Hafeez can come one down. Between Misbah and yonus only one should be in 11. Shahid Afridi is usefull bowler, if he scores that is a bonus. Kamran Akmal should get consistant chance to settle down in team.

All those people who were predicting white wash for pak is disappear now :-D

Posted by azurecharms on (March 15, 2013, 23:12 GMT)

I concur, Dark Matter. KA is responsible for the demolishing careers of one too many players. Sami, for example! Dropped catches off him in Aus tour in 2010. Sami never came back after that!

it was very impressive victory , Irfan showed that he have a permanent place in pak team . misbah and shoaib also had the guts to go till end, congratlations guys.

Welldone Ifran, 191 was not good score for SA. Misbah & Younis still not meet kingsland selection board standard. What will Misbah & Younis will do if SA score back again 300..PAK team still need fast ODI players.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 22:28 GMT)

Gul concede runs in Odi. No doubt he is the best t20 bowler. If we have 4 regular bowlers then we don't need 3 allrounders.. We should make our batting strong if we want to win the series..

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 22:24 GMT)

First time in his life, at the age of 39, near retirement now, Misbash FINISHES!!!

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 22:23 GMT)

It's was a great team effort as every body contributed to win this match. Just to " cricketstarbest" you don't need to predict until and unless the last ball has been bowled.

This means India will end this year with number 1 ranking....

GREAT victory for Pakistan !! Those who were pridicting white wash for pakistan is gone now

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 22:15 GMT)

@ Hamqad: my friend Shoaib Malik is one of the finest allrounders pakistan has ever produced. He is still in-form and playing well ... he is no doubt a better batsman than Umar Akmal and Asad Shafiq in ODI and T20 cricket. He is no doubt one of the best fielders in our team .... for God Sake please do not criticize if you don't have cricket sense or information about facts......

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 22:15 GMT)

good work pak inshallah try your best to win third odi

Posted by Green_Team on (March 15, 2013, 22:12 GMT)

Good Win by PAKISTAN . .Yeah rightly Said PIRZADA, PAK fans always forget past performances/records and believe that the player who scored in last match is a great player . . . These performance are the slaps on those faces who were criticising them . . . Best of Luck 2 Both teams for Nxt ODI :)

Posted by maria_01 on (March 15, 2013, 22:09 GMT)

i liked AB for admitting the bad performance and defeat by saying ' no excuses'......great player and a great captain....

Posted by Atta95 on (March 15, 2013, 22:09 GMT)

Good game from Pakistan. But there must be changes for next time. Remove gul and pick umar akmal. Got enough bowlers and Umar akmal is the best fielder in Pakistan, fielding will be improve as well. Move Nasir, 1 number down maybe he will start perfroming again and move Kamran Akmal as no.2. Or give rest to Nasir Jamshed for 1 odi so he can thing what he done wrong and pick for him ahmed shezad or Imran farhaat.

Posted by saadrasheedarain on (March 15, 2013, 22:08 GMT)

All hails to KING IRFAN i mean what a performance and very well played Misbah and shoaib..and very delight to see Kamran batting at number 3......every time the cricket world undermine team Pakistan and every time they proof themselves with their performance. Also well palyed SA specially captaincy as they not allowed pakistan to chase runs easily. However my serious concerns during the series is unprofessional umpiring why pakistan's match are supervised by the umpires like Aleem dar and Asad rauf caliper.

Posted by Dadu786 on (March 15, 2013, 22:08 GMT)

Irfan laid the foundation, and Shoaib Malik played vital role, getting 4 fours in Tsobe's over was one of the turning point.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 22:07 GMT)

Pakistan were lucky today because of the rain. But not much crowd though :)

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 22:05 GMT)

well palyed pakistan, totally outplayed us

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 22:03 GMT)

To Summarize there was pak bowling / batting plan utilized well to out-class the SA;s Team , however batting order should be improved: 1) Afridi 2) Nasir Jamshed 3) Hafiz 4) Misbah-ul-Haq* 5) Kamran 6) Younis 7) Shoaib Malik 8) Saeed Ajmal / Abdul Rehman 9) Umar gul 10) junaid 11) irfan Utilize Afridi's Form and Ability to play up in the order and make use of his talent. One Word for the SA's : They had never expected this and utterly shocked/Surprised , Simples

Posted by Always_pakistan on (March 15, 2013, 21:52 GMT)

Well played pakistan but umar akmal must play next match because if target is over 250 then you can not play slow.

Posted by salmann810 on (March 15, 2013, 21:51 GMT)

good going senior players performing in one match by playing in more rhan 100. bad luck for young talents for throwing them off after not performing in few matches coz of lack of experience.feel sorry4our young talent

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 21:50 GMT)

grt pak....but i can see simple but pathetic discrimination against pak.....that at the end of the match it was written pak won by 6 wickets by d/l method...sa was bowled out bf 44 overs anyways another one was the ball change if anyone noticed that field empire came down bf the empires even started to look at the ball anyways watever the icci can do they cant stop pak....only we can disappoint ourselves....again grt pak....

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 21:48 GMT)

Why are people saying why D/L target not reduced if a match starts as a 50 over game and then reduced after some overs have been bowled then the target that is iven is always increased never decreased, i-e if they were 192-4 after 44 then it would have been increased appropiately but as they were bowled out so if they had additional overs it wouldnt have mattered so the target didnt change.

Posted by AK47_pk on (March 15, 2013, 21:37 GMT)

Malik slapped some critics here. He was lacking confidence whic is building up cuz of support by PCB nd KING MISBAH.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 21:29 GMT)

Well done guyss, and nice to see pak on track again. i recon it was a matter of only one game, hope they will continue the same inshAllah. Kamran Akmal, please be serious, if a senior batsmen is with you on the other hand, other then then, Afridi Badluck as he went weketless today, but bold well and controlled SA

Posted by Dark.Matter on (March 15, 2013, 21:29 GMT)

Whenever I see this guy Akmal standing behind the stumps, my blood pressure starts to mount, and I feel sorry for bowlers, especially for spinners, who might always remain in confusion and fear of drop of a catch by him.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 21:29 GMT)

Misbah and Malik critics can stay in silence now. He's one of the greatest captains we've ever had and we're a sad bunch to not recognize that. Winning and losing is part of the game, but acknowledge the stability and maturity Misbah brings into the team.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 21:27 GMT)

SA got only chance when kamran & hafeez got out together & short period after that.

BUt in end easily won by pak. also considering that rain has benefited SA as 36 valuable balls reduced for pak without any reduction in score. SA wre bowled out. D/L is sometimes not understandable. but ok.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 21:26 GMT)

well played by PAk. totally outclassed SA while bowling. Irfan was brilliant & proved he should have been in 1st ODI. only thing he could have more overs but misbah continued with gul when he was going over 7.5

Team effort in batting hafeez, younas, misbah , malik all got some runs which will boost confidence.

Some unnecessary shots by jamshed, younas& kamran. Jamshed need some runs otherwise his place will be in question soon.

Good late resistance from Farhan & RP but 191 would not have been good on this good batting surface. & game lost when 5 down in 11 overs.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 21:24 GMT)

Malik played beautifully, he has silenced all his critics. Misbah played well too! A well deserved half century for the Pakistan captain...

Posted by maria_01 on (March 15, 2013, 21:15 GMT)

@hamqad......now i think malik performance has answered your all question....ye he is better than akmal......yes there has unfulfilled potential left in Malik......he has now performed on seaming tracks.....he has proved his preferance over akmal.......now you would have understand the utilization of malik in the team.......he can handle pressure where required..............

Posted by hamqad on (March 15, 2013, 20:43 GMT)

Can any one argue against the fact that Pakistan would have been in a more comfortable situation right now had it been Umar Akmal or Shafiq batting in place of Malik? I honestly fail to understand his utility in the team with 6 bowlers in the side. Is he a better batsman than Umar? No. Is there any unfulfilled potential left in Malik? No. Does he have a track record of performing on seaming tracks? No. I see no good explanation for preferring Malik over Akmal, unless you need someone to throw 3 or 4 overs which we clearly dont given the strength of our bowling attack.

Posted by maria_01 on (March 15, 2013, 20:35 GMT)

at this moment misbah is on 20 and he played 42 balls...out of which 26 are dot balls.........is it a One Day game?????????..............plz misbah plz.....

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 20:33 GMT)

younas was playing positive and already got 7 runs off 3 balls in that over that was unnecessary and now with 1 wicket they are gone too slow. Malik not looking comfortable. and difference closing in.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 19:30 GMT)

@ 69/3: unnecessary shots by jamshed and kamran. In pressure now. still 123 left to score.

Posted by SaadRocx on (March 15, 2013, 19:20 GMT)

Just Saying but i think that AB Devilliars is doing a horrible captaincy..He's changing Bowlers every now and then..even when some on they seem to apply pressure..

Posted by salmann810 on (March 15, 2013, 18:59 GMT)

Really sad and infact alarming situation for Pak-Cric lovers, why we are not preparing for future..Why taking players who ought to be retired and new talented players like Asad Shafiq not given the chances properly...I really think that Pakistan should start learning lessons even after winning the matches by chances...When one is not sincere and selection is based on favoritism rather than merit then that team should face failures.why the players that do not perform are given so many chances just because they are seniors and young talented players are left to watch the seniors and being discouraged. Misbah, Afridi, Shoaib, Akmal all of them being given 50 chances perform in one and go ahead play..Why??

Posted by I_m_AKS on (March 15, 2013, 18:35 GMT)

PAK is one those teams who performs once in a blue moon, they should drop some of the flops like kamran akmal , misbah & younis, only good bowling is not good enough this days to win matches, they should find out their alternates before the next WC. Remember PAK won their only WC at the down under.....

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 18:22 GMT)

D/L increases the score if the opposite team has wickets in hand... shouldn't it decrease the score since Pakistan has knocked SA's all 10 wickets? In normal circumstances Pakistan would have got 50 overs to make such score, if we've got less overs shouldn't the score also be less. (Fruit for thought)

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 17:59 GMT)

misbah continued with gul when he is being hammered but not giving irfan chance to pick 5 for.

Posted by BowledYa on (March 15, 2013, 16:57 GMT)

Pak guys, calm down. The shortened game actually suits us. The less the number of overs the better our chances. Depending on when the match retsarts it may be more like a 30 overs game. Go Green!

Posted by arvind.Kejriwal.AAP_A_Better_INDIA_ on (March 15, 2013, 16:51 GMT)

Sometimes I wonder, Shoaib Malik has good relations with someone in PCB. No wonder, he always makes it to playing XI. This guy is useless and should Quit Cricket.

Abdul Razzaq is The Best all-rounder Pak have right now but sadly due to politics of PCB and senior players he has been forgotten. Razzq ia a selfless player who always plays for team unlike Afirdi who comes into bat, hits couple of Sixes, increases his tally of sixes and immediately gets out. He might have the maximum no. of sixes bt wt's its use when u can't win matches for ur team ? Waste !

Poor Asad Shafiq. The Best Emerging Talent in Pak. But sadly he is not getting full opportunities.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 16:27 GMT)

Rain spoiled the game. now let us wait and see who will benefit with D/L . SA or PAK.

with 177/7 SA are behind but any number of balls reduced will be badluck for pakistan

Posted by hamza893 on (March 15, 2013, 15:57 GMT)

Thats why i hate SA as a venue. There is almost 5 to 6 day gap between each match and when it rains on that day it feels arghhh....The rain has ruined my excitement .

Posted by shknightrider on (March 15, 2013, 15:49 GMT)

I was expecting Wahab Riaz for Pakistan Instead of Irfan. But now, Its hats off decision. Behardien did his job need some more stamina for long inning. What about Asad Shafiq. They are just wasting the talent who can become next Ricky Ponting.

Posted by a-khan74 on (March 15, 2013, 15:47 GMT)

Good teams always keep their momentum up if SA batted past 220 runs its gonna be a milestone for pakistan recent batting form.thats for sure.

Posted by mzm149 on (March 15, 2013, 15:27 GMT)

With such a good start Pakistan should not have allowed South Africa to score above 150. Finger crossed!

Posted by docsunny on (March 15, 2013, 15:21 GMT)

Look at Umar Guls bowling on a bouncy wicket , simply pathetic .One would think he would have learnt how to bowl by now. All the initial good work has been undone. There is no way Pak is going to chase 200 plus on this wicket. Pak selectors seem very optimistic !! What are the odds of Malik or Afridi scoring more than 20 !!! No idea why they dropped Asad Shafiq. Ahmad Shehzad would have been a good choice as well looking into futurel. Pak could easily be 5 for 25 on a wicket like this .

Posted by Resultpredictor on (March 15, 2013, 15:21 GMT)

There is only outside chance for Pakistan to win this match. SA is going to win this match convincingly. Peterson was the hero of second test and he will be hero in this ODI also. Pakistan can take all wickets but Pak bowlers cannot take wicket of Peterson. RP will be MoM. Congrats SA for winning this match

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 15:07 GMT)

other bowlers are economical but misbah is persisting with gul who is going over 7.5

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (March 15, 2013, 14:35 GMT)

what a miserable condition of pakistan attack as they cant take even tailenders out anymore.. wasim waqar and shaoib akhter use to clear them in seconds

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 14:03 GMT)

good thing for SA is that they are maintaining a healthy run rate even after 5 wickets gone. 100 inside 18 overs is really good and they can go over 200.

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (March 15, 2013, 13:57 GMT)

unbeleiveable that they are playing malik instead Umar akmal and asad shafeeq.. thanks to irfan otherwise there was no chance.. and umar akmal needs rest for a long long time now.

Posted by hamqad on (March 15, 2013, 13:46 GMT)

With 6 very able bowlers in the line-up, I fail to understand how Shoaib Malik makes the cut ahead of Umar Akmal. Both are inconsistent, but Umar has the potential to win you a game. Oh and he is the highest ranked Pakistani batsman in the ICC ODI rankings. Shoaib, on the other hand, is not a match winner. He is a bits and parts player who we do not really need given the extra bowler in the eleven.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 13:29 GMT)

brilliant by irfan .

and he can field too.. :)

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 13:12 GMT)

Hierarchy has to stop in order for pakistan cricket to flourish , younis khan, shoaib malik and shahid afridi what are they in for after repeated failures. asad shafiq , umar akmal wahab riaz should have put in for experience sake. the whole team is mesmerized by dale steyn and it is affecting them to perform everybody is playing with fear it will take alot to brake out of the fear factor.

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 13:02 GMT)

@27/2: well ideally it would have been malik out and umar in. taking out a batsman and bringing in bowler isnt that good. So malik is playing as a proper batsman.

About ingram decision, i think should not have been given out just for sound. but going by the standards in test matches, and some people saying that umpires should see common sense and change on sound . i think this was ok then.

Posted by azhar_hassan on (March 15, 2013, 13:02 GMT)

As a PAK fan, I would love to be able to say that they CAN chase something below 250 - but to be honest, on current form, even a score below 250 may be quite a challenge! Such is the situation at the moment, that all one can say is that they are consistently inconsistent!

Posted by   on (March 15, 2013, 12:40 GMT)

Congrats AB for winning he toss. If SA scores above 250 then game is sealed as Pakistan cannot chase anything above 250.
