Pakistan in South Africa Test Series - 1st Test

South Africa v Pakistan

South Africa won by 211 runs

Overs 0-50

3.5

Steyn to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, another jaffa from Steyn, gets the outside edge this time, just swerving away after pitching around off stump, Hafeez prods at that one limply, a thin edge through to the keeper,, Bowden's crooked finger goes up, and if Pakistan didn't realise they were in for a fight today, they do now

Mohammad Hafeez c †de Villiers b Steyn 6 (14m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 42.85

Pakistan 9/1   Nasir Jamshed 2* (9b)   DW Steyn 1.5-1-2-1

5.1

Steyn to Nasir Jamshed, OUT, Steyn is on fire here, they bring the roof down with that lbw appeal, Bowden agrees, Jamshed reviews, that hit him just above the knee roll after pitching just short of a length and on middle stump, coming back in towards the batsman, he misses and that was going on to take leg stump, the decision stays, Pakistan two down

Nasir Jamshed lbw b Steyn 2 (25m 15b 0x4 0x6) SR: 13.33

Pakistan 12/2   Azhar Ali 2* (2b)   DW Steyn 2.1-1-4-2

5.6

Steyn to Younis Khan, OUT, oh dear, Pakistan are in massive trouble now, Steyn proving unstoppable once more, beautiful curve on the ball as it pitching around off and moves a mile after pitching, Younis opens the face as he pokes at it and that is edged through to first slip, a duck for Younis and Pakistan in disarray,

Younis Khan c Smith b Steyn 0 (5m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Pakistan 12/3   Azhar Ali 2* (2b)   DW Steyn 3-2-4-3

19.5

Kallis to Azhar Ali, OUT, a brute of a delivery there from Kallis, just as it seemed that Azhar Ali and Misbah had done enough to weather the early storm, Kallis digs one in and that goes for Azhar's throat, batsman has no option but to fend at it, sends it through to the keeper and South Africa get their fourth, and Kallis showing again why he's pretty handy as a fourth seamer

Azhar Ali c †de Villiers b Kallis 13 (81m 46b 2x4 0x6) SR: 28.26

Pakistan 36/4   Misbah-ul-Haq 12* (39b 3x4)   JH Kallis 3.5-1-9-1

21.1

Kallis to Misbah-ul-Haq, OUT, a belated appeal for a caught-behind, de Villiers hardly went up, Kallis was keen , turned down by the umpire, South Africa refer it, it was a short of length ball curling away, Misbah pokes at it, Hot Spot proving tricky again, there was a tiny spot on the bat but it vanished after a moment, I don't rate this Hot Spot at all, and to overturn the decision based on that is pretty harsh for Pakistan, Whatmore doesn't like that decision, Pakistan 36 for 5, and that follow-on target of 54 will be on their mind again, de Villiers definitely didn't think there was an edge, he just tossed the ball to first slip after collecting it, no appeal from him at all initially

Misbah-ul-Haq c †de Villiers b Kallis 12 (77m 45b 3x4 0x6) SR: 26.66

Pakistan 37/5   Asad Shafiq 0* (2b)   JH Kallis 4.1-1-9-2

22.1

Philander to Asad Shafiq, OUT, And he has struck! Six down, this was a spontaneous appeal, Asad Shafiq is walking back after falling while chasing a wide delivery, pretty wide and Asad reached for that one trying to drive it through the off side, got a thin edge and AB took it easily, it swung away but Asad drove loosely at that one, big trouble now for Pakistan, no referrals this time

Asad Shafiq c †de Villiers b Philander 1 (17m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20.00

Pakistan 39/6   Sarfraz Ahmed 1* (3b)   VD Philander 5.1-4-6-1

22.3

Philander to Umar Gul, OUT, threw it away there, what's happening here? Philander doles out another wide one, short and wide and moving away further, Gul chased it, reached for it and went for a needless cut, got a thick edge and Smith took it above his head at first slip, disastrous day so far for Pakistan, the last two wickets could so easily have been avoided

Umar Gul c Smith b Philander 0 (2m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Pakistan 39/7   Sarfraz Ahmed 1* (3b)   VD Philander 5.3-4-6-2

25.2

Steyn to Saeed Ajmal, OUT, just takes two balls to strike, Steyn has his fourth, another outside edge, de Villiers flies to his right to collect that, that one swings away from Steyn, pitching on a length just outside off, too good for Ajmal, who nibbles it through

Saeed Ajmal c †de Villiers b Steyn 1 (10m 10b 0x4 0x6) SR: 10.00

Pakistan 40/8   Sarfraz Ahmed 1* (10b)   DW Steyn 6.2-4-8-4

27.1

Steyn to Sarfraz Ahmed, OUT, Pakistan are 41 for 9! five for Steyn, another catch for de Villiers taking it low in front and to his right, Sarfraz is gone poking at one outside off, immaculate line and length from Steyn yet again

Sarfraz Ahmed c †de Villiers b Steyn 2 (28m 13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 15.38

Pakistan 41/9   Junaid Khan 0* (8b)   DW Steyn 7.1-5-8-5

29.1

Steyn to Rahat Ali, OUT, it's over, Steyn is unstoppable, this was coming, they have missed the outside edge several times against the tailenders, this time he gets it and the ball flies through to fourth slip, where Faf du Plessis parries an overhead chance, and takes it on the second chance, Pakistan have been bundled out for 49, their lowest score in Test history, Steyn finishes with ridiculous figures of 6 for 8, Smith and Petersen running up to the dressing room which means South Africa may not enforce the follow on

Rahat Ali c du Plessis b Steyn 0 (9m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Pakistan 49/10   Junaid Khan 8* (14b 2x4)   DW Steyn 8.1-6-8-6
