Pakistan in South Africa ODI Series - 3rd ODI

South Africa v Pakistan

South Africa won by 34 runs

Amla and Smith, green pads on pink trousers, are out to bat. Irfan has the first new ball. There are two slips as well.

Pakistan win the toss and they will have a bowl

Umar Gul is out, with a knee injury, Wahab Riaz is in, which means Mohammad Irfan is fit and playing. Three fast bowlers and one less batsman for Pakistan again. For South Africa, Kyle Abbott is out, Rory Kleinveldt is in.

Firdose tells me South Africa are wearing pink today in support of the fight against breast cancer.

"Would be interesting to see if Pakistan opts for 3 bowlers today as well given there's not much for any bowler on Johannesburg pitches," says Aquif. Six years ago, they played the 438 game on this ground, and it didn't matter how many bowlers you had that day.

9.20 am We are tied at 1-all, Pakistan and South Africa. All to play for on a Sunday morning at the Wanderers. Toss coming up in ten minutes, and here is the preview for the game, in which Firdose Moonda points out that Pakistan have never beaten South Africa in a bilateral ODI series. Considering this is the sixth one between the two, that is quite a record.

0.1

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, no run, holding its line and lifting from a good length outside off, where Smith reaches with a big shuffle to defend

0.2

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, no run, nearly 140 kph as he gets it to climb from a fuller length now, moving away late, Smith beaten on the push

0.3

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, no run, good length this time, lots of bounce, but Smith watchful enough to let it go early

0.4

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, no run, slightly fuller now, but Smith has decided to let a few go alone, not a bad idea, with away swing and the carry

0.5

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, no run, massive away swing, like an offbreak gone crazy in top gear, Smith has made the right decision to be cautious early, and he shoulders arms once more as it pitches full outside off

0.6

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, no run, straighter now, but well outside off and merits one more leave

End of over 1 (maiden) South Africa 0/0 (RR: 0.00)

1.2

Junaid Khan to Amla, no run, and next ball he rips it on the stumps, good length, and it catches Amla on the pad, also convinces the umpire enough to raise the finger. South Africa will review this, and replays show it pitched just outside leg stump, and that will ensure Amla stays

1.3

Junaid Khan to Amla, no run, 137.9 kph and troubling Amla once again, it has come in just enough after pitching on a length to take a thick inside edge as Amla plants the front leg across

1.4

Junaid Khan to Amla, no run, moves across once more and pings extra cover with a crisp push

1.5

Junaid Khan to Amla, no run, ends up outside off stump with the shuffle and lets a good length ball go past, fine carry again, tight lines again, Pakistan starting with lots of discipline

1.6

Junaid Khan to Amla, no run, slight width now, and Amla is flashing those wrists immediately, needing point to dive to save what could have been four

2.2

2.3

Mohammad Irfan to Amla, 1 leg bye

2.4

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, 2 runs, overpitched outside off stump and Smith happily turns it through square leg, as if that was the easiest and most natural thing to do for a batsman

2.5

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, no run, lifter outside off stump, smith will have a look and leave it

2.6

Mohammad Irfan to Smith, OUT, he's decided to play it this time, away from the body too, he'd been leaving them alone decently, but hopped across way outside off to defend this one from Irfan which bounced, took the inside edge, and it proved to be a fatal one for Smith

4.4

Mohammad Irfan to Ingram, no run, but Ingram does push this time, probably the fuller length makes him do that, these are wonderful areas from Pakistan, Ingram is beaten as the the ball straightens once more

4.5

Mohammad Irfan to Ingram, no run, lots of lift for the umpteenth time today, helps that it is a touch wider outside off, and Ingram is able to spot that and let it go

4.6

Mohammad Irfan to Ingram, FOUR, stinging response, Ingram confidently forward to a pitched up delivery and even as it straightens, he dispatches it through extra cover with a cracker of a connection

5.2

Junaid Khan to Ingram, no run, could have gone for the cut on that one, there was some width, but with the kind of lift these men are getting, leaving was the much better option, Ingram lets it go

F du Plessis c Younis Khan b Wahab Riaz 45 (28m 19b 4x4 3x6) SR: 236.84

A superb cameo from du Plessis. Wahab has a wicket but these are poor figures. Mazher: "93 runs by Wahab Riaz. Most expensive bowling figures by a Pakistan bowler in an ODI. Previous: 92 by Rana Naved, also against South Africa at Centurion 2007."

McLaren to face the final ball

49.6

Wahab Riaz to McLaren, 1 leg bye, tries to scoop that from outside off but misses, gets a leg-bye

South Africa have amassed a huge total, thanks to two excellent centuries. This, after a slow start on a flat pitch, with two wickets down. But is this score chaseable? South Africa have a strong bowling attack, but if there's any track on which this can be chased down, it is here at Jo'burg. Pakistan need to bat out of their skins here. Join us in a bit for the chase. Firdose Moonda's report should be getting updated here. See you on the other side.

End of over 50 (11 runs) South Africa 343/5
R McLaren    0* (1b)      Wahab Riaz    10-0-93-2
