Sri Lanka in South Africa Test Series - 2nd Test

South Africa v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 208 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

We're about 8 mins away from the first ball. Get yourselves the coffee/breakfast if you wish and settle in to the Test. The pitch they say, is hard, bouncy and should be better for batting than Centurion.

Other brave decisions - India opting to bat at damp Headingley, 2002. Series squared.

Sundeep: "Well the script is all too similar like India-SA series last year, hoping for SL win here and extended drought for SA for Test series win at home."

Yes that's quite ironic isn't it? In the 90s and for a while after that Kingsmead was a SA fortress. #strange

Firdose confirms the first day is a sell-out. But the seats are yet to fill up. Castle Corner is full.

Toss: Sri Lanka have won the toss and they will bat first. Dinesh Chandimal will be making his debut in place of Kaushal Silva. Therefore, we have two debutants today. Marchant de Lange in place of the injured Vernon Philander. Chandimal will be keeping wicket, by the way.

So de Lange, the fast bowler, will wear South Africa whites for the first time. Keeping with the trend this year, will we see another debut five-for? Highly unlikely that Chandimal will get one. Kidding...

I'm a bit surprised Sri Lanka have opted to bat, to be honest, but it's a brave decision. Dilshan reckons this wicket will be good to bat on, better than Centurion. Nevertheless, Sri Lanka are facing their fears head-on and well, let's see how it goes. Shaun Pollock thinks it's a good decision and he's from these parts.

Gareth's the first one to write in. Welcome aboard: "Shame about Vernon. He would have loved to bowl at this Lankan side this morning. Improve those already ridiculous figures."

Firdose, who's been busy shunting between cities this summer, is at the press box hammering away on the laptop already. She says there's been a lot of sunlight to help get this pitch ready, which is hard, bouncy and should have plenty of runs in it.

Welcome Zubby: 'Very bold move to bat first by Lanka... Not sure if this is the right given the history in Durban."

9.15am: Happy Boxing Day to everyone. The cricket of course continues. The action for the rest of the day will be at Kingsmead in Durban for the second Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa.

The first bit of news we can give you is that Marchant de Lange is debuting for South Africa. Just waiting to see who he's replacing. Could be in for Philander. Let's not jump the gun yet. He got his cap from Shaun Pollock.

Weather: Sunny, perfect summer's day.

In the meantime there's plenty to read to keep you occupied till the first ball. Firdose Moonda has this analysis piece on why South Africa is a opening batsman's nightmare. The toss will be on shortly.

Sri Lanka need nothing short of a batting miracle. They're certainly capable of doing that. All they need is self belief. Kumar Sangakkara, in need of runs himself, said it in as many words that making excuses galore won't get them anywhere.

0.1

Steyn to Paranavitana, no run, left alone outside the off stump, hint of seam movement inwards, safely negotiated, Steyn not at full throttle yet

0.3

Steyn to Dilshan, 5 runs, and Dilshan was neary a goner! He fends off a short delivery to the off side and sets off, Steyn picks up, turns around and the throw was too high, four overthrows, direct hit would have sent him back

0.4

Steyn to Paranavitana, no run, gets good bounce and carry through to the keeper, safely left alone

0.5

Steyn to Paranavitana, no run, 138 kph, bowls it a bit fuller this time and he watchfully leaves it alone

1.4

Morkel to Dilshan, no run, gets his bat nicely behind the line and pushes it to mid-off

1.5

Morkel to Dilshan, no run, that's another close call for Dilshan! Credit to the bowler for pitching it up and getting it to sneak past the outside edge

1.6

Morkel to Dilshan, no run, appeal for an lbw but I reckon he hit it, tried to work it across the line in front of the stumps, could have been sliding down leg too, not a vociferous shout though

3.3

Morkel to Dilshan, no run, well left this time, outside the off stump, good bounce and carry

3.4

Morkel to Dilshan, FOUR, Morkel errs by straying too far down the leg side, fine leg was square and hence a trickle was enough to send it down, Dilshan should wait for the loose deliveries like this one

3.5

Morkel to Dilshan, no run, adjusts his line to outside the off stump and Dilshan wisely opts to leave it alone

3.6

Morkel to Dilshan, no run, fuller delivery and he leaves it to the keeper again

4.6

Steyn to Paranavitana, no run, tucks it down towards midwicket and tells his partner to wait

here's our first sighting of Marchant de Lange. He replaces Steyn

6.1

de Lange to Dilshan, no run, quite an eventful first ball! Short one and Dilshan tried to introduce him to Tests with a fierce pull, he ended up playing onto his body and the ball lobed towards silly mid-on

KM responds: "@Salman - Yes, form is one factor. Another is, Pakistan's bowling strength was in their spin. Sanga's ability against spinners is better than that against pacers (he's still an excellent batsman of pace bowling). Here, in RSA, the strength is pace / swing, add helpful conditions to that, and it does become really hard. Another reason is the pitch: in UAE, the batsmen could go on the backfoot and still play on the up; however, in RSA, its practically impossible. Frankly, it seems more like an adjustment issue."

12.00: The start could have been a lot better for Sri Lanka because the openers moved on quite steadily until de Lange came on. The conditions are good for batting, despite the bounce. Dilshan will rue his dismissal surely. Jayawardene has looked solid and that's good for Sri Lanka's prospects. Samaraweera has also eased away nicely with a few boundaries. Overall an action packed session, tilting towards the hosts. Join us at 12.35.
