Zimbabwe in South Africa ODI Series - 3rd ODI

South Africa v Zimbabwe

South Africa won by 272 runs

2.30pm Amla makes his way to the middle with his captain Graeme Smith, what a wonderfully contrasting pair they are. Stylish Amla, bullish Smith. Ah, thank you Dave "Let me advise on what Liam's on about, "sokkie treffers" majority of the population in Benoni is of Afrikaans nature and "sokkie treffers" is a type of music genre that Afrikaans people listen too. Makes sense that they playing for the crowd..."

2.20pm We're about 10 minutes from the off now. Big first 10 overs for Zimbabwe, their opening bowler's have been hammered by Amla. Liam seems to have written something in code here: " Preponderance of sokkie treffers in the soundtrack being boomed over the PA at the moment. Southern Africans will know what I'm on about." Good, because I certainly don't.

2.05pm More from Liam... "It is very humid indeed out there, and there are patches of greeen and the odd crack in the pitch. Robin Jackman reckons the ball may keep low as the match wears on, and to him it's "a bat-first pitch"" Good news for the home side then, who line up like this:

South Africa Smith, Amla, Ingram, de Villiers, Duminy, Miller, A Morkel Botha, Parnell, Theron, Tsotsobe.

Zimbabwe have made a couple of changes, including leaving Grant Flower out. You wait six years and two games later are stuck on the bench. Oh well.

Zimbabwe Masakadza, Taylor, Chibhabha, Taibu, Ervine, Chigumbura, Dabengwa, Utseya, Cremer, Masakadza, Nicolson.

2.00pm Liam has been surveying the scene for news and think's he may have spotted something: " Looks like Rainsford may get a game today, he's in the outfield going through his paces with Heath Streak. Streaky's still getting some away curve going, it's noticeable even from this distance." Streaky's main curve of late has been the generous one around his stomach, as far as I can see. Anyway, enough chortle South Africa have won the toss and will bat.

1.55pm Liam has had a tough time finding a way into the ground but now he has here's what he sees: "Benoni is not the picturesque of places. Some might argue that it's quite the opposite. But there's already a decent crowd in - it's another of the South African grounds dominated by grass banks rather than stands, and there's a good atmosphere plenty of haze around at the moment, and it's a warm and humid day. There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms this evening though, so the weather may well intrude later"

1.50pm Hello everyone and welcome along to the massive and utterly glamorous 3rd ODI. It's South Africa against Zimbabwe live and unleashed in Benoni. I'm Sahil Dutta and I'll be taking you through the bulk of the game, but should hopefully be joined by an all-star ESPNcricinfo line-up later.

Zimbabwe are chasing a consolation win after losing the first two games and Abhishek Purohit has a full preview of their chances. Such is the fineness of his work he even includes stats like this: "Brendan Taylor's unbeaten 145 in Bloemfontein is the fourth-highest individual score in a lost chase, and the highest outside India." So make sure you check it out.

What's more Liam Brickhill, who has finally made his way to Benoni, has been wandering around Johannesburg and has been inspired to produce this gem of a tour diary. If all that isn't enough you can go to our Facebook page and debate in a calm and courteous manner all the things that make our wonderful game of cricket the majesty it is.

0.1

SW Masakadza to Smith, no run, Masakadza starts things off to Smith, slip in place and four in the ring saving one on the off side, none of them matter here though, as it's outside off stump and left alone

0.2

SW Masakadza to Smith, 1 wide, touch of swing, decent pace, line awry as it head down for a leg-side wide

0.2

SW Masakadza to Smith, no run, very correct straight delivery meets an even more correct straight bat, good cricket

0.3

SW Masakadza to Smith, no run, good start from Masakadza, this again is a good length and line, Smith gets his broad bat in the way to pat back to the bowler

0.4

SW Masakadza to Smith, 1 wide, oops, the line is wrong again this time, only by a fraction, but a inch means a mile down the leg side in ODI cricket

0.4

SW Masakadza to Smith, 1 run, thickish inside edge found, skewing the ball into the leg side for a single

0.5

SW Masakadza to Amla, no run, hint of swing here, and an excellent full length, hurries Amla into a weary defensive prod

0.6

SW Masakadza to Amla, no run, good first over ends with another away swinger that is steered to point

Jacomien de Klerk offers some helpful advice: "Sahil, get one of the Benoni poppies to teach you the two-step after the match, it's almost like double-stepping a Zim spinner. Then you'll know what the sokkie treffers are all about - music you can windsurf to." If they happen to be in Hammersmith, I certainly shall.

End of over 1 (3 runs) South Africa 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
HM Amla    0* (2b)      SW Masakadza    1-0-3-0
GC Smith    1* (4b)

1.1

Nicolson to Smith, 1 run, Nicolson is in just his second ODI here and starts it with a shortish ball that surprises Smith by bouncing a fraction more than expected, guided into the leg side for a swift single

1.2

Nicolson to Amla, no run, good ball again here, very chest-on action, but some extra bounce that Amla hops to defend

1.3

Nicolson to Amla, SIX, wow, here's a batsman in form, Nicolson slings down, with a rather round arm, a widish length ball, Amla flings his hands through it, sending the ball sailing over third man for a six! That's one way to get off the mark

1.4

Nicolson to Amla, no run, good delivery here, outside off and Amla leaves alone

1.5

Nicolson to Amla, no run, touch fuller, touch straighter and calmly defended

1.6

Nicolson to Amla, FOUR, unlucky for Nicolson! Amla flashes again outside off and this time goes a finer edge that flew through a vacant first slip for four

End of over 2 (11 runs) South Africa 14/0 (RR: 7.00)
HM Amla    10* (7b 1x4 1x6)      IA Nicolson    1-0-11-0
GC Smith    2* (5b)      SW Masakadza    1-0-3-0

2.1

SW Masakadza to Smith, no run, hint of pace and bounce seems to surprise Smith as he looks to turn this around the corner

2.2

SW Masakadza to Smith, FOUR, Masakadza's first really poor delivery and Smith took full advantage. It's a very simple rule of the game - Shot. Wide. Four.

2.3

SW Masakadza to Smith, no run, much better, honing in to the top of off, with a hint of swing and even the mighty Smith can only defend

2.4

SW Masakadza to Smith, 1 run, decent line again, perhaps a touch too straight, allows Smith to work towards midwicket

2.5

SW Masakadza to Amla, 1 run, enough width here from Amla to flash his arms and wrists through this, pinging off the bat to deep point

2.6

SW Masakadza to Smith, no run, decent end to the over, back of a length around off stump, Smith shuffles across to defend

End of over 3 (6 runs) South Africa 20/0 (RR: 6.66)
GC Smith    7* (10b 1x4)      SW Masakadza    2-0-9-0
HM Amla    11* (8b 1x4 1x6)      IA Nicolson    1-0-11-0

3.1

Nicolson to Amla, no run, there's something of a liability in the way Nicolson delivers, doesn't look the strongest of actions, but the line is good enough to keep Amla on strike

3.2

Nicolson to Amla, no run, touch of extra bounce around off stump, Amla rises with it to defend

3.3

Nicolson to Amla, FOUR, too short and despite some tennis-ball bounce, Amla swats this off his eyebrows for four down to fine leg

3.4

Nicolson to Amla, (no ball) 1 run, ooh dear, beamer! Probably not intentional but it flew through at neck-height, the bowler apologised straight away, Amla worked it to third man

3.4

Nicolson to Smith, FOUR, oh dear, the line is wrong here, down the leg side and Smith is gifted a help-yourself four

3.5

Nicolson to Smith, 1 no ball, no ball this time, overstepping the mark which means free hit time, cripes, he was a long way over

3.5

Nicolson to Smith, SIX, in the slot and Smith does indeed grasp how much of a possibility was laid before
him there, getting deep into his crease and clattering a pull shot into the stands over cow corner

3.6

Nicolson to Smith, FOUR, oh dear, an over to forget, down the leg side again and Smith works off his hip to collect another boundary. South Africa are officially flying now

End of over 4 (21 runs) South Africa 41/0 (RR: 10.25)
GC Smith    21* (14b 3x4 1x6)      IA Nicolson    2-0-32-0
HM Amla    16* (12b 2x4 1x6)      SW Masakadza    2-0-9-0

4.1

SW Masakadza to Amla, 1 run, slower ball, and very well delivered too, out the back of the hand and defended, Amla called a swift single and Smith had to really scamper through

Bivis has this interesting anecdote about Benoni's Willowmoore Park: "Willowmoore Park has the honour of being the venue where the fastest triple century ws scored by Denis Compton in 1948/49, George Mann's MCC team. It was against North-Eastern Transvaal. Compton was made a freeman of the town and years later, when he turned up for tea, the mayor had no idea why he was made a freeman of the town."

4.2

SW Masakadza to Smith, no run, touch of width here and Smith picks out the short third man with his steer

4.3

SW Masakadza to Smith, 1 run, well bowled, good length and line, Smith defends crisply towards point and jogs through a single

4.4

SW Masakadza to Amla, no run, another slower ball, Masakadza is mixing it up well so far, crucially his line is good and Amla leans forward to defend

4.5

SW Masakadza to Amla, FOUR, yet another slower delivery, Amla saw it, waited for it, paused, waited and upper-cut to the third man boundary, lovely batting

4.6

SW Masakadza to Amla, 2 runs, does he have a quicker ball!? Everything is out the back of the hand here, Amla flicks with typical grace and elan towards deep midwicket to take a single

End of over 5 (8 runs) South Africa 49/0 (RR: 9.80)
HM Amla    23* (16b 3x4 1x6)      SW Masakadza    3-0-17-0

Prosper Utseya, who must be Zimbabwe's best bowler, is brought into the firing line. Slip in place.

5.1

Utseya to Smith, no run, what a lovely start! Hint of air, dips, does Smith in the flight as he tries to skip down the wicket, ends up getting leading-edge along the ground to the bowler

5.2

Utseya to Smith, FOUR, oh dear, too short, sits up like a naughty egg white, begging to be beaten, which Smith does, hammering through point

5.3

Utseya to Smith, OUT, brilliant bowling! Wonderful stuff from Utseya! Draws Smith down the wicket with some flight, before dipping, going between bat and pad as Smith swings aimlessly past it and Taibu has the bails off in a flash. Marvellous piece of spin bowling!

GC Smith st †Taibu b Utseya 26 (27m 19b 4x4 1x6) SR: 136.84

JP Duminy is shoved up the order, South Africa full of tricks this series.

Utseya to Duminy, no run, once again there is nothing on offer for Duminy, can only defend

5.6

Utseya to Duminy, no run, excellent over from Utseya, he's a real talent, ends with careful defence from Duminy

6.1

SW Masakadza to Amla, 1 run, another Masakadza slower ball, Amla works into space for a single

6.2

SW Masakadza to Duminy, no run, this is a fuller-pace delivery, outside off stump, Duminy watchful early on, letting it go by

6.3

SW Masakadza to Duminy, no run, this is an even better delivery, tight on off stump Duminy reaches for the textbook and defends with the straightest of bats

6.4

SW Masakadza to Duminy, FOUR, just a hint of width, but Duminy knew what it meant, time for a square drive, and he played it stylishly for four through point

6.5

SW Masakadza to Duminy, 1 run, this time it's a touch shorter from Masakadza and Duminy works it to deep square

6.6

SW Masakadza to Amla, OUT, Masakadza strikes! This flew off a length, rearing up at Amla as he tried to run it down to third man, only managed a fine edge which Taibu snaffled gleefully

HM Amla c †Taibu b SW Masakadza 24 (34m 18b 3x4 1x6) SR: 133.33

So Amla's brilliant series ends in disappointment but good work from Masakadza.

7.5

Utseya to Duminy, no run, again a touch a dip beats the batsman in the flight and Duminy has to defend

7.6

Utseya to Duminy, 1 run, worked down the ground for a single to end an excellent over

8.2

SW Masakadza to Duminy, 1 run, touch of extra bounce, there is a certain life in the track, Duminy stands tall and steers to deep point

8.3

SW Masakadza to de Villiers, 1 run, de Villiers shuffles outside leg, then back in line, dandy mover that he is, singer too, but from what I heard he's pretty dreadful, his batting is good though, and this is driven very neatly to deep cover

8.4

SW Masakadza to Duminy, no run, very, very firmly driven, but straight to mid-off

8.5

SW Masakadza to Duminy, no run, bit of a false shot, perhaps it stuck in the wicket this time a fraction, Duminy ended up with a thickish outside edge into the off side

It's South Africa's third highest ODI total and should be far too much for the tourists. Liam Brickhill will have his mid-match bulletin in soon and please join us in 30 mins for the resumption.
