An outstandingly talented all-round schoolmaster, "Bunny" Hoare taught a range of subjects, coached and refereed rugby and cricket and was housemaster of Glencorse before being appointed headmaster of Strathallan in December 1950. In its obituary on him The Scotsman described him as "one of the great post-war Scottish headmasters". In a short time he had doubled the numbers at the school, embarked on a major building programme and over a 19-year period in office put Strathallan firmly on the map. As the Scotsman obituary stated, "Former members of staff speak highly of his leadership and drive, as do members of the board of governors who worked closely with him."
The Story of Strathallan School said that cricket was his real talent. "His enthusiasm for the art of batting held an absolute priority, and was liable to interrupt any business conducted indoors, the nets being within view and earshot of his study window. With an awe-inspiring bellow he would leave his audience open-mouthed as he stepped through the French window on to the lawn and, wrestling the bat from the grasp of a boy, he would demonstrate the supreme importance of keeping up the left elbow."
