Profile

A medium-pace inswing bowler, Gordon McKinna played only a handful of matches while at Oxford University but he got his chance a month before the 1953 Varsity match and did enough in three outings - which included a four-for against Surrey - to win his Blue. He took 2 for 14 off 17 overs in Cambridge's first innings and 1 for 45 second time round. On leaving university he joined the RAF, playing cricket for them, including the annual match against the Army at Lord's, but his work in the City curtailed any further serious cricket. A good footballer, he also won a Blue at that sport, captaining the side in 1952-53, and was called into the England Amateur XI at the end of that season. He played for the leading amateur side Pegasus.
