Dr Sid Kiel was a right-hand opener who scored a century in his second match for Western Province in December 1939 and he followed with a second hundred in the last game of the season. He was an outsider for the 1947 tour of England, finishing the previous domestic season with 87 and 54 against Transvaal in what turned out to be his final first-class appearance before concentrating on medicine. Kiel was also an international athlete, holding the South African record for the high hurdles. He was fifth in the final at the 1938 Empire Games in Sydney, but had declined to travel to Berlin for the 1936 Olympics in protest against Adolf Hitler's treatment of his fellow Jews.
