In Durban, the Dolphins dismissed the Cape Cobras for 216 after winning the toss. JP Duminy top scored with 52 and Alan Dawson made an unbeaten 37, but there was little else besides. Saidi Mlongo, with 3 for 47, started the Cobra slide with two early wickets, a position they struggled to recover from. Bad light ended play early, but not before Doug Watson lost his wicket and the Dolphins went to stumps on 29 for 1.
Heino Kuhn and Martin van Jaarsveld put the Titans into a very strong position at the end of day one of their match against the Eagles in Bloemfontein. Kuhn, opening the innings and making his debut for the Titans, fell four short of a hundred while van Jaarsveld ended the day unbeaten on 130 as the Titans made 294 for 4. Nicky Boje bowled well, with the impressive figures of 3 for 55.
After Mark Bruyns had been run out for 18 and Burton de Wett dismissed for 27, Carl Bradfield (58) and Steven Pope (59*) steadied the Warriors' innings against the Lions. Werner Coetsee, who bowled an impressively long 29-over spell, and Enoch Nkwe both took two wickets before bad light stopped play, with the Warriors closing on 257 for 5.
