Western Province 290 for 8 (Canning 68, Aronstam 3-69) lead Northerns 267 Aronstam 69, Philander 3-74) by 23 runs

Fifties from Vernon Philander and Ryan Canning gave Western Province a slender lead on the second day of the SAA Provincial Challenge final against Northerns at Cape Town.
Province were in trouble at 110 for 4 and, when Dominic Telo fell for a brisk 43, their innings was in danger of collapsing beneath them. Philander and Canning though starred in a 78-run partnership to edge Province past Northern's first-innings total of 267.
Maurice Aronstram - the star of Northerns' batsman yesterday - bowled with impressive control to pick up 3 for 69 in his 29 overs, and also accounted for Canning's wicket who fell for a well-compiled 68.Although Mark de Stadler will resume tomorrow on 25, Province only hold a lead of 23 with just two batsmen remaining.
