Sheffield-born Eric Burgin enjoyed a brief but successful career with Yorkshire. For two seasons in 1952 and 1953 he shared the new ball with Fred Trueman and produced an excellent return from his 12 first-class matches.

Given helpful conditions, he produced more than significant inswingers. He left his mark with a spell of 5 for 20 in the first innings of the Roses match of 1952 at Old Trafford as Lancashire were shot out for 65 - Trueman took the other five wickets having slowed down his pace after lunch to take advantage the conditions that Burgin was thriving in. Lancashire managed to hold on, nine down on the final evening, to secure a draw.

But Burgin's best return was saved for a Yorkshire victory; his 6 for 43 coming in a thumping win against Surrey at Headingley.

Burgin was a talented all-round sportsman who also played football for York City and Sheffield United reserves. His league cricket was spent at Sheffield United, for whom he also played a prominent part in their switch from Bramall Lane to Bawtry Road in 1973.

His service to Yorkshire extended beyond his two seasons as a player. He spent four years on the general committee from 1980 and was also a devoted founder member of the Yorkshire Players' Association.
