Born on July 14, 1873, at Eastbourne. He was fourth in the Radley College averages in 1890 and third in 1891. He played the first of his eight matches for Hampshire in 1899, when he made his highest score of 64 against Yorkshire at Bradford, but as a regular soldier his county cricket was very restricted. He served in the South African War, being mentioned in Despatches and receiving the Queen's medal with four clasps. In 1903 for the Gentlemen of Worcestershire v Gentlemen of Warwickshire at Edgbaston he made 102 and 127*. Then in 1904 he had the unusual experience of turning out for Worcestershire against Oxford University at Worcester, scoring 41 and 75*, and in the same season playing three matches for Hampshire, making 37 and 49 against Somerset at Taunton. He scored 264 runs in total for Hampshire at 17.60. Attaining the rank of Lieut-Colonel with the 9th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he was killed in action near Hill Q at Gallipoli on July 26, 1915, aged 42.
