Tom Sueter was a wicketkeeper of some renown at a time when there was almost no protection, and the erratic bounce made it a hazardous position to field. Despite this, he often stood up to the stumps for the quickest of bowlers - aided, as all keepers then were, by a longstop - and he was also an excellent hard-hitting batsman. John Nyren credits Sueter with being the first player to leave the crease to attack bowlers, lofting it back over the bowler "as if it had been fired". Nyren added that he had "not seen a handsomer man, who measured about five feet ten, and of ... an amiable disposition."
