Jayasuriya among top picks in SLPL

  shares 128

Sanath Jayasuriya, the former Sri Lanka opener, was one of six players to be valued at the maximum price of $35,000 in the local player portion of the draft for the inaugural Sri Lanka Premier League. The other five other players valued in the top bracket were current Sri Lanka internationals Dinesh Chandimal, Chamara Kapugedara, Nuwan Kulasekara, Thisara Perera and Rangana Herath. In all, 107 local players were drafted.

The 43-year-old Jayasuriya, who played for the Mumbai Indians in the first three seasons of the IPL, was selected in the ninth round by Kandurata on Friday in Colombo. Jayasuriya also played for Khulna in the first season of the Bangladesh Premier League earlier this year. Chandimal was the first Sri Lanka player to be drafted when he was selected by Wayamba with the day's first pick. Perera and Kulasekara were the second and third players picked, by Kandurata and Nagenahira respectively, while Uthura selected Kapugedara with the fifth pick, according to the results released by Sri Lanka Cricket.

Herath was taken in the second round by Basnahira. Chaminda Vaas, the former Sri Lanka fast bowler, was valued at $25,000 and selected by Wayamba in the 11th round.

Angelo Mathews was named icon player of Nagenahira, taking the place of Shahid Afridi. The franchise had decided to release Afridi before the international players' draft as they wanted an icon player who would be available through the tournament - Afridi could potentially miss the semi-finals and finals of the SLPL due to the recently announced Pakistan-Australia series.

On Thursday, 56 foreign players were picked by the seven franchises via the same draft system, giving each franchise a preliminary list of 24 players. The teams will now prune that list down to 18 players comprising 12 Sri Lankan and six foreign players, one of the tournament organisers told ESPNcricinfo. The remaining six players - four Sri Lankan and two foreign - then become part of the supplementary list for their respective teams. In case of an injury to a player in the primary squad, teams will be allowed to replace the injured player with a player from the supplementary list.

One player who is likely to find himself on the supplementary list is Adam Voges, who was picked up by Kandurata. Voges is currently Nottinghamshire's Twenty20 player and the county insists his obligations at Trent Bridge will be met in full.

I am wondering about the local player selections...Some of familiar names are missing..Ian Danials,Saman Jayantha (regular member of Hong kong sixes),Geeth Alwis (SSC alrounder),Sanitha De Mel(Sri Lanka Under 19 captain),Charith Jayampathy( one of the best under 19 fast bowlers),Dinusha Fernando,Amila Perera of Panadura(highest wicket taker of club 20-20), Yashoda Lanka ,Chanaka Wijeshighe ,Chathuranga De Silva & Sujith Nikethana (#rd highest scorer-club 2-20)......Instead there are some names not even heard in the first class matches...Dilesh Budhika,Chameera Dushmantha,Akila Ishanka & Madushanka Ekanayake....

i think kadurata is the strongest cause they have good openers sanath and para, then comes sanga ,misbah, thilan and allrounders thisara ,loku,wk bat kaushal.ajmal ,morkel, botha ,thanvir,,,loku hettige is also dangerous and the side is balance.

  • Shafi79 on July 9, 2012, 2:38 GMT

I think Nagenahira is going to suprrise quite a few, they seem to have had a clear strategy of local bowlers and overseas batting, their bowling looks lethal with, Kulasekara, Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis and Suraj Randiv. I guess they missed out on Malinga :) They've got some good T-20 players as far as batting goes - Imran Nazir, Travis Birt, Nasir Hossain, Ahmed Shezad can all be explosive. Angelo Mathews, might hold the key to their fortunes i think ...

  • UMAR77 on July 8, 2012, 13:54 GMT

i rate Ruhuna as best team in the tournament. On papers they choose best combination of such a lethal players. In bowlers they have world best T20 bowler Malinga alongwith Harris and Wijekoon. In batsmen they have Richard Levi, Thirimanne, Silva, P.Jayawardene, Tharanga and in Allrounders they have best T20 All rounders Afridi and McCullum. This combination will make them the most dangerous team on SLPL. No other team has such a gud combination of bowlers, batsmen and all rounders

  • warneneverchuck on July 8, 2012, 7:16 GMT

  • warneneverchuck on July 8, 2012, 5:56 GMT

@randika at the end of your so called SLpL u wil come to know Wher it stands I think then u can analyze the difference between two leagues. It can never match audience, money and players who participated in IPL

  • johnathonjosephs on July 7, 2012, 22:21 GMT

Its sad to see fans laughing about the amount of money being paid here compared to the millions in the IPL. It seems that the IPL has eroded the fan's true passion for cricket and turned it into a money-love affair

  • on July 7, 2012, 22:15 GMT

when they draft sanath.j it shows the sorry status of the slpl .i hope it wont put srilankan cricket in big time mess. from a big fan of srilankan cricket.

Captains might be Uthura- Sakib Nagenahira- Mathews/mushfik Ruhuna- Afridi Wayamba- Jayawardene Kandurata- Sangakarra Basnahira- Dilshan/hodge Uva- Gayle/malik (if gayle doesnt wanna be captain) Best of luck SLPL although disapponinted with the value of players...but i bet it will be a a competitive one because of many world class players :)

  • warneneverchuck on July 7, 2012, 19:15 GMT

  • YS_USA on July 7, 2012, 17:01 GMT

If SLPL and BPL are successful, then IPL should reduce their contract amounts as it is not necessary to give out $2.4 millions for 8 weeks of play. Money could be better utilized in building more stadiums and cricket supporting infrastructure, paying Ranji players and supporting other sports in India.

  • on July 7, 2012, 15:36 GMT

Hope SLPL is a success, without the Indian Players. Time to show that Money aint enough to run the game!!

  • on July 7, 2012, 14:39 GMT

Everyone's saying SLPL is cheap comparing to IPL. Most o the IPL players get 40-50,000$ for Three MONTHS. SLPL is for only 3 weeks. So get ya math right. Hope SL main players will be fit for 20-20 Wc after playing cricket like this everyday.

i think slpl will be better than ipl. in ipl most of good cricketers are always on the bench.they were sold and they just looking the match.if it's all about money it's ok. but that is not the issue.here many players will be part of playing xi and very good chase for yonggungs.and we cannt see any problem without ind and english men. in cricket world there are so many good cricketrs.when we look at all the sqauds we can see that tere's no prob what so ever.too much players means too much weight for team bench.gud luck slpl

on Paper Kandurata and Wayamba looks the strongest and Basnahira looks the weakest. Interesting to see how these teams perform. Out of all really interested to see how Nagenahira team performs, they have a very young side Captained by Mathews. What he brings to the tournament as a leader will be interesting to see, even though SL try to groom his as the next leader, i was not so impressed with his captaincy at U19 level, time would have changed things, so hope he can change my mind. but he definitely has talent. good platform for many of the young players to perform and make a name for them selves and for those foreign players who were rejected from most other leagues to earn some bucks.

  • on July 7, 2012, 2:31 GMT

I looked the list over and over and did not see the name of DWAYNE SMITH . He is one of the best players of the short format of cricket in the World .

  • on July 6, 2012, 21:23 GMT

  • Htc-Android on July 6, 2012, 19:45 GMT

this is the good chance to see to every one special jayasuriya ,vass ,sanga ,mahela & dilshan when they are playing time , and what happen to kalu (kaluwitharana) he can play also upul chandana

  • playitstraight on July 6, 2012, 19:40 GMT

@Chamindra - Joke of the century! On a more serious note, I'm surprised to see many Sri Lankans who have not played international matches get places, but I doubt they would be in the playing 11. Remember, there can be 6 foreign players and 5 Sri Lankans. I want to see whether this will be a success like the IPL or just another league like the ICL.

  • on July 6, 2012, 19:09 GMT

Except Uthura, every other team looks good.. Hope this will be a good foundation for youngsters like Chathura Peiris, Anjelo Perera to show their colors as well as SLCB to make some $ out of it. OK Folks its time for some local action !

  • on July 6, 2012, 19:04 GMT

no AB de Villiers? Go Ruhanda!

  • suve on July 6, 2012, 19:01 GMT

Jayasuriya is still very fit, he's probabaly fitter than some international players playing right now. I think all 7 teams are well balanced and all 7 have a good chance to win. Good to see a decent amount being payed to the cricketers rather than pointless millions of dollars being payed like in the IPL. I think SLPL will be a success, It will give the Pakistani and other international players a little experience in the new pitches, which will be used in the T20 WC.

  • mohammedafif36 on July 6, 2012, 18:48 GMT

I think UVA is a strong team but other teams are not behind. its going to be terrific tournament.

  • Lankanforever on July 6, 2012, 18:31 GMT

For those who are bashing SJ there will be few like me who'll simply watch SLPL to see Sana, Vass and Murali play whether they perform or not. just seen one boundry from sana will worth watching. also seen vass or Murali get a wicket is a priceless thing.

  • ---lasitha--- on July 6, 2012, 18:23 GMT

looking forward to see thilan samaraweera in t20

  • on July 6, 2012, 18:22 GMT

Looks good to me. Every team has almost 3 pakistani players in it and i'm liking the opening combination of imran and ahmed.

  • on July 6, 2012, 17:34 GMT

Chris Gayle and Dilshan Munaweera Should open for UVA.. Com on UVA... Both are my favorites :)

  • on July 6, 2012, 17:32 GMT

i think wayamba did the best thing by opting for chandimal.. along with the likes of mahela, vass, tamim, azar mahmood and franclin it looks pretty solid. im not sure which razzak( pak or ban) is picked. i think they shoul make umar akmal keep rather than kusal janith.or go hor 40 year old hogg with a better fast bowler to make the bowling unit stronger also note that these teams must compete with ipl teams so have to be strong

  • arun_padmanabhan on July 6, 2012, 17:27 GMT

hope there is coverage in India..will be good viewing for the cricket fans and will be a financial boost for the SLPL..But a general question is how many more leagues can cricket sustain? I guess eventually we will come to a point where each country's tourney will be played by the country's players alone..

  • UN_Jonty on July 6, 2012, 17:25 GMT

I m love to see Chandimal and U.Akmal playing together...!

  • bdsmaruf on July 6, 2012, 17:24 GMT

  • GerrardLK on July 6, 2012, 17:15 GMT

Mumbai Indians will win. Sachin will be the highest run getter.

  • saffyboy on July 6, 2012, 17:11 GMT

Andy Solomons Dexter, chosen to play for Nagenahira, a player with great potential. Fiery quick bowler, athletic fielder and an explosive batsmen. Given the opportunity, he will no doubt be real value for money. He has the potential to be an upcoming Srilankan star.

  • LMalinga on July 6, 2012, 17:08 GMT

kandurata and ruhuna bowling looks great...

  • amitpat79 on July 6, 2012, 17:08 GMT

They should stop playing for own country and have this leagues all year IPL, SLPL BPL , ETC..... it's getting worst

I BLAME KAPIL DEV FOR ALL THIS ... IF THERE WAS NO " ICL " .. THERE WOULD BE NO IPL AND OTHER LEAGUE

  • on July 6, 2012, 17:06 GMT

For me, Kandurata will Dominate with: 1. Sangakkara 2. Jayasuriya 3. Thilan samaraweera 4. Misbah ul haq 5. Albie morkel 6. Thisara perera 7. tharanga paranavitana 8. Sohail Tanvir 9. Kaushal Silva 10.Saeed Ajmal 11.Chanaka Welegedara

  • Sakthiivel on July 6, 2012, 16:58 GMT

@ Mayan Priyadarshana : Better Players start praying that they get the salary from SLPL..

  • Nawa.9g on July 6, 2012, 16:52 GMT

jayasuriya may not play as master blaster at age 43. But its still joy to watch him play. People will watch slpl only if stars like gayle afridi, sanga, mahela, malinga playing. Not to see some schoolboys and 1st class cricketers. So players like sanath who have international and local fan base will add colours to slpl.

  • Kishor_shinde on July 6, 2012, 16:51 GMT

Correct me if I am wrong, but Shahid Afridi is icon player for Nagenahira then why is he shown in Ruhuna squad....?

I am Indian and fan of cricket....No league is better or poor on its financial status...BPL was good1so will be SLPL.

Cricket fan will enjoy any cricket...And this will make CLT20 more interesting.

  • on July 6, 2012, 16:49 GMT

  • Lovedegame on July 6, 2012, 16:42 GMT

I don't understand how they can just allot players they should have let teams choose, this can bring in a lot of partiality in and also unwanted tensions. Please stop comparing this League to the IPL because IPL is worth a few billion$ and it has all the best cricketers from all the Countries with mind boggling pay checks, so they want to play. I would love to see SLPL do well but to compare will be embarrassing for SLPL

Uva looks good with a strong batting line up & bowling line up they have specialy with banuka rajapksha as u 21 player they have strong batting line up kadurata too is looking good but all the teams are evenly balanced....results will depend on the form of these players...hope they'll be in top form to show us real lankan brand of cricket

  • on July 6, 2012, 15:49 GMT

now, all indians will be keep saying this is so law money compared to ipl, i know, but not every one even in ipl gets millions dollars, most of slpl overseas players gets only 20000$-50000$ in ipl, here they get around 30000$-50000$, and that too for a 3 week work, ipl is 2 months, so in someways SLPL is a more profitable tournament for some players than IPL

  • Vihanga.Perera on July 6, 2012, 15:47 GMT

  • 9ST9 on July 6, 2012, 15:28 GMT

as with the IPL what matters most is the local strength - in that aspect Basnahira, with probably the largest fan base, are precariously placed. Nagenahira and Kandurata have snapped up some of the best T20 talent in the country. Smart picks by Wayamba as well - good to see Murali and Vass back again.
