The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has denied Shakib Al Hasan permission to play in the Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL) following an injury to his left knee. He will instead be given time to recover ahead of September's World Twenty20.
"Shakib has been advised by the national team physio that he has to focus on rehabilitation of the injury in his left knee in the forthcoming period, during which he cannot play matches," BCB media manager Rabeed Imam said. "This was also the suggestion of the BCB, that he gets some rest for now."
The news is a blow to the Uthura Rudras franchise, for whom Shakib had been the big pick from the list of overseas players and a possible team captain. His experience and value as a spin-bowling allrounder would almost certainly have seen him play every game.
Uthura Rudras management declined to comment on Shakib's withdrawal until they received official confirmation from the BCB.
Shakib was one of five Bangladesh players set to play in the SLPL; the others are expected to appear in the tournament as planned.

...also both their ODI bowling, Shakib has an overall better economy than Afridi with Afridi having an economy rate of 4.57 whereas Shakib is better with an economy rate of 4.29 and both their strike rates are the same with 40.3 so according to your logic, if Shakib is ordinary than Afridi is less than ordinary lol but stats don't lie but love to here from you on these evidences try to refute. As for their Tests records again, Shakib beat Afridi infact you can compare the stats for yourself cause they speak for themselves instantly. According to my logic, both Afridi and Shakib are world class but when I put your method into action and compared so called 'ordinary' Shakib with another top quality All-Rounder Afridi, it turned out that Afridi according to your logic is even more ordinary haha he was just an example I can give more to show why no one apart from Shane Watson and Kallis is even close to Shakib. Stats are compared when Shakib made his debut till today.
Posted by@Legaleagle...lol " laughable average in both formats of the games?" - Funny since Shakib made his debut, according to stats, Shakib record in both Tests and ODIs is far superior to Afridi who by the way must be even more ordinary according to your logic. Lets take their ODI records first and compare who's really the 'ordinary' one. Since Shakib made his ODI debut till today, Shakib has played 126 ODI matches scoring 3635 runs at an average of 35.63 whereas Afridi in the same period has played 131 matches slightly more than Shakib and still has only scored 2303 runs at an average of 22.35 haha so who's ordinary? Exactly! and in their bowling Afridi has taken slightly more wickets than Shakib but that's because he has played an extra 5 games compared to him but in total he has taken 168 wickets at an average of 30.73 whereas Shakib has taken 160 wickets at an bowling average of 28.85 even better than Afridi's so therefore Afridi is actually the ordinary one according to your logic so :)
Posted by@Legaleagle...haha...The ICC Player Ranking don't lie so whether you like it or not, Shakib is the BEST ALL-ROUNDER in the World and don't tell me you know better than the ICC? infact you're right he's ordinary, he's so ordinary that he's extraordinary. You said "who has managed to perform against associate or weaker teams only"? lol It doesn't really matter who Shakib performs against because he can perform fantastically against both lower and higher ranked teams in fact who was Man of the Tournament at the Asia Cup and won Man of the Match awards at the IPL? Exactly! They were no ordinary teams so that claim based on these evidences alone is totally invalid. Also in Shakib 26 Tests, only one was against Zimbabwe and yet he's almost taken a 100 Wickets and going towards 2000 runs so that argument again is invalid. Also Shakib has scored centuries against Pakistan and New Zealand in Pakistan and New Zealand so these are good proofs that he's an ALL-ROUNDER so :)
Posted by shihabhossain on (August 5, 2012, 8:58 GMT)The great cricketer ...... Shakib is the best allrounder
Posted byI thought Shakib had a great impact on Uthura Rudras. They started voting pool for captain on their website and Shakib got 96% vote, also the Uthura Rudras management made him vice captain. It is a great miss for them for sure.
For me and all other Bangladeshis, we would watch every game of Uthura Rudras just because of him. But as he is not playing, we wont waste our time watching a match with unknown Sri Lankan players. That was a wise decision by BCB, as National team should be the priority by any means. Recover well Shakib, for the world cup t20.
Posted by Legaleagle on (August 5, 2012, 2:31 GMT)Actually this is blessing in disguise for SLPL- Shakib is an ordinary player, who has managed to perform against associate or weaker teams only. He possess laughable average in both formats of the games. He may be an alright bowler but not a batsmen, and definitely NOT AN ALL-ROUNDER. Its good riddance for SLPL!
Posted by Imsrk on (August 4, 2012, 21:00 GMT)Any ways he is just a ordinary player
Posted by Dula86 on (August 4, 2012, 19:13 GMT)I really dont think there is a massive blow for Uthura Rudras as they do have a quality left arm spinner, Sohan Boralessa. He has done exceptionally well in the concluded domestic season (was the 2nd highest wicket taker) and was very unlucky to miss out on the SL A tour to South Africa. Lack of a quality spinner was badly felt in that tour. Anyways all SL fan watch out for this new spin wizard who would most probably patnering w Murali in the SLPL. Cheers...
Posted by eZoha on (August 4, 2012, 17:08 GMT)No Shakib means the viewership will drop by a few millions. It may sound strange to many, but it's a fact.
Posted by Shajadul on (August 4, 2012, 16:24 GMT)Good luck for your recovery....we will miss you in SLPL. Better luck in World T20.
Posted bySLPL gonna miss Sakib, the number One.
Posted by sumit176 on (August 4, 2012, 10:29 GMT)@ajeesajid lol that was australia at its peak,,,they had many matchwinners,,
Posted by azeesajid on (August 4, 2012, 7:55 GMT)No doubt Shakib is a wonderful player to have bt it would not heart the team so badly which u people r describing. Don't u remember the 2003 icc world cup when shane warne went back to home bt still aus won the cup comprehensively. absence of single player does not make such a big difference..
Posted by SylhetiBangladeshiCricketExpert4u on (August 3, 2012, 20:26 GMT)Shakib is IPL Winner and to miss SLPL is a Big loss because t20 wc will be played in SL
Posted by Mad_for_Shakib on (August 3, 2012, 17:47 GMT)no shakib no slpl.........
Posted by M_Rakibul_Islam on (August 3, 2012, 14:41 GMT)@ Easir Arafat: U've missed 2 biggest names mate. Garifield Sobers is the greatest all-rounder of history & Kallis is best allrounder of last decade. No doubt Shakib has been a very good all-rounder since 2008 but he is no match with Sobers, Kallis & ur Great 4. I think Shakib will join the list if he can continue his per4mance for next 10-12 years.
Posted by 101010101010 on (August 3, 2012, 14:05 GMT)sad news for SLPL...sangakara & Shakib not gona play...we will miss them :-(
Posted byThe news is a blow to the Uthura Rudras franchise, for whom Shakib had been the big pick from the list of overseas players and a possible team captain. His experience and value as a spin-bowling allrounder would almost certainly have seen him play every game. :( :( :(
Posted by shaantanu on (August 3, 2012, 13:25 GMT)Shakib is not ordinary as someone commented in this post.He is a fine talent and a very fine allrounder.......Btw why name the leagues BPL,SLPL etc.Couldnt have the organisers coined some innovative names.waiting for PPL,APL etc etc
Posted byI went to the ESPN3 site and found out they'll have the SLPL streamed live. Why no mention of it anywhere on this site? Both ESPN3 and Cricinfo share the same ownership, no?
Posted by fr600 on (August 3, 2012, 12:12 GMT)The great cricketer shall be missed in SLPL.
Posted byShakib is the best allrounder after the great 4 (kapil, imran, hadlee, botham)
Posted by reyme on (August 2, 2012, 23:37 GMT)@vrn59: Check out the ICC ranking. Shakib has been the Worlds best ODI alrounder last 3 years. And in Test, he has held that spot most of the time for last year or so, too bad he does not get to play enough Test, otherwise he would be retaining the worlds best test alrounder spot too. Currently he is at 2.
Posted by EnglishCricket on (August 2, 2012, 22:22 GMT)All the best for SLPL Sri Lanka but already problem are arising with injuries for the tournament i.e. Kumar Sangakarra and now Sakib I wonder who is next? I understand there won't be an Indian players but why on earth no English players? I don't get it because they could use this sort of preparation considering T20 World Championship will be held in exactly the same place pretty odd.
Posted bysome ordinary comment from some anti Bangladesh in other words from some ordinary cricket fans as usual. Get some idea what is cricket, how to play cricket and later try to call some one ordinar @wonderstar1
Posted bySo this must be the guy who is the best all-rounder in the world. Haven't seen much of him as I don't really follow much Asian Cricket as compared to England or Australia but if ICC rate him as high then its perfectly justified. Wasn't he the one that won the man of tournament at Asia Trophy?
Posted byThe word "Knee Injury" always sounds career threatening to me I mean just take a look at Mortaza throughout all his career suffering from the same problem so really the Bangladesh management made the wise and sensible decision to rest Bangladesh's best player. I really wanted to see him in action in the coming SLPL but its not worth taking a risk of SLPL for World T20 and besides, Bangladesh have lots of series coming up after the World T20 with West Indies coming, then their two tours to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe so the risk is not worth taking because if he did get a long tern injury then I can't see Bangladesh have a chance of winning a series for once. But who are the other 4 players playing in the SLPL because the only other one I heard was Ashraful.
Posted by vrn59 on (August 2, 2012, 21:33 GMT)SHAKIB AL HASAN IS NOT THE BEST ALL-ROUNDER IN THE WORLD!
Posted by Natesan333 on (August 2, 2012, 21:27 GMT)@woodhaven24 yes it wil be a geat loss, but then again I don't think Kallis was ever going to play for SLPL :)
I just read that SLPL is going to be broadcasted over youtube, that's great inovative thinking in the part of SL. It goes to show that even without big money, if you "think out side the box" you can make it big. All the best to SLPL, from an Indian fan.
Posted by Dilbar786 on (August 2, 2012, 20:32 GMT)Hafeez is better option thn shakib
Posted byhahaha........slpl is not ipl
Posted by wonderstar1 on (August 2, 2012, 20:15 GMT)who cares?? anyways, Shakib is just ordinary and Bangladesh is indeed very ordinary team.
Posted by woodhaven on (August 2, 2012, 19:31 GMT)Without worlds best allrounder, slpl will lose some of its charm. But best of luck slpl.
Posted byHmm Shakib being BD's key player should be fully fit for WC. But first Sanag's injury and then Shakib's will surely affect TRP of SLPL.
Posted byso sad.i'll miss not seeing him to play in the slpl.i m sure, not only me, every body will.
Posted bybad news for shakib.if shakib play in the slpl then he can gathered more experience from the other cricket star
Posted byoh well he wanted some rest anyway
Posted by Mad_for_Shakib on (August 2, 2012, 18:30 GMT)good for bd but bad news for us hu want 2 c mr 75 allways in battle ground
Posted bywe will of course miss SHAKIB's charm in SLPL but its a good decision.. He needs to make himself 100% fit before the WC... coz, after all, COUNTRY COMES FIRST !
Posted by arif29 on (August 2, 2012, 17:23 GMT)get well shakib bhai.
