Basnahira v Kandurata, SLPL, Colombo August 11, 2012

All-round Dilshan stars for Basnahira

23

Basnahira Cricket Dundee 129 for 3 (Dilshan 66*, Tanvir 3-31) beat Kandurata Warriors 95 for 7 (Perera 35, Dilshan 2-26) by 34 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Tillakaratne Dilshan lit up a damp Colombo evening with a 39-ball 66 not out and two wickets to ignite Basnahira's SLPL campaign, as they defeated Kandurata by 34 runs in a 13-over match. Playing in front of a small but boisterous home crowd, Dilshan savaged the sometimes wayward Kandurata bowling either side of the wicket, before making the initial breakthroughs for his side with the ball. A direct hit run-out towards the end of the Kandurata innings completed his near-perfect night.

Having laboured to 10 from his first 18 balls, thanks largely to a fiery opening spell from Sohail Tanvir, Dilshan plundered 56 from his next 21. Two scoops to the boundary off Scott Styris' second over heralded the onslaught, before heaving two consecutive legside sixes two overs later. There were plenty of knee-high full tosses, and friendly short balls from the Kandurata bowlers, but in between dispatching the dross, Dilshan struck good balls to the boundary too.

Brad Hodge operated in Dilshan's slipstream to begin with, before playing a few bold strokes of his own to claim 27 from 20 balls. Having struck three consecutive boundaries from Tanvir's third over, he was the victim of his own flamboyance on the next ball, where he went so deep in his crease that his bat disturbed the stumps on its way down to hit the ball. The pair's third-wicket partnership of 70 though, was the bedrock for a good finish, which Dilshan duly provided, by clubbing Kosala Kulasekara's final four deliveries for three fours and a six.

Thilan Samaraweera was the surprise opener for Kandurata, and though his quick 24 promised a tight finish, a Dilshan double-strike in the fifth over dented the visitors' ambitions. Fired up from his innings, Dilshan even gave his Sri Lanka team-mate a sendoff - something the laidback Samaraweera seemed amused at, if anything. Nuwan Pradeep, Charl Langeveldt and Rangana Herath took a wicket a piece as Kandurata fell well behind the asking rate, and though Thisara Perera threatened a revival with a 21-ball 35, he was fighting a lone cause. His wicket, with Kandurata at 84 for 5 from 10.2 overs effectively secured the match for Basnahira.

OK first of all, all the people who talk about organizing do you know what the hell is 'organizing' means?? if you did'nt come to SL to watch this then shut up. I mean the matches goes well, we get the pictures greatly thanks to ESPN and who cares about the rest?..of course we cannot predict whether can we?

Secondly about the jersy's,...true they are very similar to IPL, but no one owns colors right? could have been more creative rather than copying.

And if anyone concerned about the crowd get this,...any cricket fan in Sri lanka would be watching SLPL even they cannot attend the ground. I mean people are not jobless right? they are buzy! I do not know about India but we have better things to do but always make time for an interesting match....

These things are organized for enjoyment so put your egos aside and support...

Pijamas r similaer 2 IPL. Like 2 see better pijamas next year, which are unique 2 Sri Lanka. overall this is more than i expected. Good work, can improve in the next season.

First of all, it was better than expected. And thanks ESPN STAR for great pictures. With regards to some comments about players jerseys looking like the ones used in IPL; we do not care. Its SLPL & they have the right to make any jersy in any colour.I wasn't excited about this SLPL before, but after what I have seen yesterday I must say I'm impressed. Weldone Sri Lanka & good luck.

Good cricket (nice and balance combat between bat & ball). The tournament has been organised well which is beyond my expectations. A wonderful, colourful opening ceremony! Hope rain stay away! Good Luck SLPL!

no pre released tickets no crowd all VIP ,really poor organizing. but the camera work and graphics of ESPN star cricket is awesome , thanx ESPN

Tournament is good and entertaining except for rain, but we can't support against rain.August is generally dry month. But Sri lanka did not have enough rain for last 3 years. The telecast is not enough featured because not indication of speed of balls , not availability of hawk eye technology and wagon wheels.

  • Sinhaya on August 12, 2012, 6:11 GMT

@Imteaz Tishad, it is wrong to call July and August rainy season in Sri Laka. Bro, kindly look at the past many years. We have had most of our home series by hosting cricket teams in July and August as it is relatively dry though occasional rain cannot be ruled out. We recently hosted India without any rain interruption.

Why Don't You Put Photos Of Every Match? Is It Lower Than The Fixing IPL? Please Put SLPL Photos?

  • on August 12, 2012, 3:49 GMT

main reasons to decrease the crowd

1.Defeating to india in last series consecatively and people fedup with cricket.

2.Organizers have provided cricket for free to people near Keththarama and they sold that cricket to crowd who hadn't tickets for 250 1000 2000 value(100 500 1000 tickets)

3.Lame Organizer have not provided tickets to spectators in R.Premadasa.there is a Mafia in premadasa. No ticket counter in premadasa therefore spectators have to go far away to buy tickets and when they going to buy those tickets,it was bought by Maligawaththa slum people and they dont watch cricet and buy that ticket for specs with a 150%profit atleast.

    4.100% Lame Organizing in R.Premadasa.

@Ahmed Hussain, actually July and August are not rainy seasons. That is why we have international cricket every year in July and August. Last year we had Australia in August and was free of rain. In September early part there was some rain which interrupted the test matches with Australia. Because this time of the year is dry only that was why we hosted India in the last 3 weeks and all 5 ODIs and the T20 went without any rain interruption.

Scot styris and Sohail Tanvir in the same team like they played in the same team in BPL also ( Sylhet Royals)

Im founding the BPL Flavour in this SLPL !

Didn't watch the match but heard it was a decent start but just a shame for Lankans that rain spoiled some part of both games infact isn't this a rainy season in Sri Lanka? Not showing disrespect or anything or I may be totally wrong but by reading all these articles on SLPL, it looks to me that making money has more to do with this tournament than Cricket itself.

  • Vibhanu on August 11, 2012, 20:27 GMT

It was a good match and pretty entertaining one.The crowd wasn't small in my view.Unlike in ipl here we support all of our teams without considering the provincial difference. So crowd wasn't there to support to a one team but to enjoy cricket.

kadurata needs a balanced side ,,kithruwan is a bad openner with thilan and what kosala kulasekara doing in the side ,,thisara bowled just one over i think this two should change and put para and sanath to the side,,,they can open the batting and thilan can come at no 4 or 5..
