Uthura Rudras v Wayamba United, SLPL, Colombo August 12, 2012

Tamim, Kamran overpower Uthura

85

Wayamba United 183 for 1 (Tamim 93*, Kamran 79) beat Uthura Rudras 179 for 7 (Farhat 51, Kapugedera 38) by nine wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

A blazing opening stand between Tamim Iqbal and Kamran Akmal made a chase of 180 seem a cakewalk, as Wayamba United crushed Uthura Rudras by nine wickets, with four balls to spare at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Tamim savaged an unbeaten 93 from 61 deliveries, while Kamran made 79 from 55. The latter's dismissal in the penultimate over was the only hiccup during the run chase, and that too when the game was already in the bag. Earlier, Imran Farhat's breakneck fifty and Chamara Kapugedara's 38 had lifted Uthura to an imposing 179 for 6, but the bowlers' inability to create chances, or even contain the batsmen for any length of time undid hopes of securing a first-up win.

The Wayamba openers bludgeoned 14 fours and nine sixes between them, feasting on a buffet of friendly length balls from the Uthura pace bowlers, that were mostly heaved brutally onto the leg side. Unafraid to use their feet to the spinners, the pair made plenty off them as well. Muttiah Muralitharan prides himself on being economical in this format, but Tamim's six off him into the second tier of the stands over wide long-on was the biggest hit of the night. Murali disappeared for 36 from his four - a marginally better economy rate than Uthura's other spinner, Janaka Gunaratne, who went at 12 an over.

Tamim reached his fifty from 31 balls with a lofted cover drive, before Kamran launched two sixes over midwicket in the next over to reach his milestone from 32 balls. The pair slowed slightly as the target neared, but were never in danger of becoming too complacent about the required rate.

Wayamba's fast bowlers had erred in length as well, allowing Farhat to propel Uthura to 68 from 6 overs, but Wayamba's spinners were on hand to pare back the run rate, bowling ten overs for 68 between them.

One of those spinners was 18-year-old Akila Dananjaya, who was picked for Wayamba and Sri Lanka's 30-man ICC World Twenty20 provisional squad, despite not having played any first class or list A cricket. He made a creditable debut, conceding only 24 from his four overs. Only five of Dananjaya's supposed seven variations were on show today, as he unfurled a doosra, googly, carrom ball and finger-spun topspinner to go with his stock off-breaks.

Srilanka might be a small nation in terms of size but there is some real talents out there from what i have seen.

In all leagues, I think teams are allowed to play only 4 foreign players, if so then these are the almost same players playing in every league. BBL has even lesser foreign players, BPL & SPL might have missed the service of Indian players, but I bet only 3/4 are missing the game and they are easily replaceable by Pak players! English are kind of self exiled themselves from these tournaments. So, in terms of "Foreign Players", I would say all leagues are close enough, oh IPL gets slight advantage as they organized the tournament when International matches are less and gets full services of most international players. Now, the rest squad must filled with local talents who are dominant btw, so in what aspect anyone say Indian local are way superior than Srilanka and Australia, could be better than BD, I won't argue now. So, with this fact then how would anyone say BPL & SPL are third graded tournament, rather IPL is spending way higher for the same services from likes Gayle and others!

IPL is more about big names than talents. That's why teams like Pune chooses clarke ahead of Tamim even at opening positions. This is all about glamor not cricket. I am not saying clarke is not a bad player. But there should have been fair chances for player like in form Tamim who got 4 consecutive half centuries in Asia Cup against all opponents. Even he was wisden cricketer of the year for two consecutive centuries against England bowling line up.

Mahela is more aggressive & innovative than Ganguly. Ganguly even suggested KKR to drop Shakib in the final! That shows Ganguly's inability to choose the right player in this format.

U guys might be celebrating Tamim'm knock but just think the other way round. Wayamba's batting line-up consists of almost all international level batsmen Tamim, Kamran, Umar, Chandimal, Razzaq and Mahela himself. Come one man, u can give chance to some SL domestic batsman, send him up with Tamim or Kamran to open and there will always be Mahela and Chandi to support in middle order. Agreed that winning is also important but after all this league is for Sri Lankan youngsters, they should get more opportunities NOT Tamim or Kamran. For the same reason, I have stopped supporting CSK.

Dada must have seen Tamim's sixers. What a innings 93 not out from 63 balls. On next IPL dada must select Tamim on their XI. If not it will be a KP-ECB or Gyle vs WI Board case.

'Great_Aussie' u think Indian player is only world class player? In the SLPL have all of great player without Indian (like DPMD Jayawardene,Afridi,Umor Gul,Dilshan etc.) Can u told me one indian world class passe bowler? but in SL have so many world class passe & spin bowler. May be IPL is the best organized league, because they have lot of money. but this is not the best quality league.

Ha ha big joke people r comparing third class leagues like BPL SLPL with IPL bbl. Players like tamim get chance here bcoz standard of international players is very low unlike IPL bbl. I think few days ago even afridi said IPL bbl best organized league in the world

  • masud69 on August 13, 2012, 7:44 GMT

if cricket is for entertainment; it was pure entertainment! entertainment! entertainment! well done Tamim & Kamran

  • on August 13, 2012, 7:05 GMT

good innings by both nice to see good cricket with unbiased selections that allow talented players to play the game rather than mediocre money grabbers that IPL does.

IPL has more cashflow which is why it's more popular but i find BBL and SLPL to be more fun to watch.

  • Artificialintelligent1 on August 12, 2012, 18:28 GMT

Wayamba got 5 batting specialists but I think they should improve their bowling skills and..... this will be a better team with a good bowling side nice to see that akmal brothers in one team If tamim continue his "unbelievable thrashing" it will be a good period for him and his team chandimal is a dangerous batsman in sri lanka domestic cricket. with mahela's captaincy this won't be a big deal for wayamba...

  • fr600 on August 12, 2012, 18:13 GMT

I don't see a reason why Wayamba United wouldn't win SLPL. After all, they got most of all the amazing players.

  • Alexk400 on August 12, 2012, 18:03 GMT

Tamim can play.He should have played in playing XI. Ganguly do not like any player who is threaten to his existance. He did the same to Ganapathi vignesh when he was in charge of KKR. He never gave chance to ICL mvp player. With all good thing with ganguly , he also has bad stuff. He never pick players who threaten to his job. He always pick players who play for him but not for his spot. He wants the spotlight.

It seems like wayamba batting strength and it also has great leadership in jayawardene and they will win SLPL. No question in my mind.

Tamim Iqbal and Kamran Akmal clicked a fantastic opening pair. They snatched the joy from Uthura by hitting some huges sixes and fours. I really enjoyed the match especially enjoyed so much to see Tamim's tornado innings. The DADA, Ganguly should now realize that Tamim is not less than Ryder, Marlon even you, Mr. Ganguly. U (Mr. DADA) can be legend in Indian cricket but u are not suitable for T20 cricket at present time. U should have thought about Tamim at least for a match. But your arrogance was proved that your thinking was horrible for Pune Warriors.

  • G-Rocker on August 12, 2012, 17:40 GMT

Mind-blowing Innings from Tamim Iqbal...he played like a real Royal Bengal Tiger.

  • Porky_PigTheToon on August 12, 2012, 17:40 GMT

In T20 International matches, Tamim's strike rate is only 100.23. Would you believe ? Quite unlike him ! It's quite surprising !

  • asiacricket1234 on August 12, 2012, 17:40 GMT

I donno why everyone Whinning about Tamim not getting a chance in IPL. Pune wanted Tamim to play the last 3matches but he had to come back for personal reason.

  • Porky_PigTheToon on August 12, 2012, 17:37 GMT

I also think when Tamim was in pUne team his T-20 record was very ordinary compared to that of Ryder. His strike was hardly 120 that too with a poor average. Correct me if I'm wrong. But still in sub-continent, you should play a sub-continent batsman.

  • Porky_PigTheToon on August 12, 2012, 17:35 GMT

A Question - If Wayamba wins SLPL then for which team Mahela will play in CL T20 ? DD or Wayamba itself ? Last to last time, Ross Taylor played for RCB in CLt20 despite the fact his own team NZ was playing in the tournament. What will happen this time ?

  • Mad_for_Shakib on August 12, 2012, 17:32 GMT

  • Porky_PigTheToon on August 12, 2012, 17:31 GMT

Yes ..Unbelievable batting by Tamim and Kamran. But it doesn't mean, you guys start bashing "India" .When Shakib and Tamin got dropped you guys bashed 'India' and forgot it's Not India but a bunch of -U%$%$ who dropped them that included foreigners like Wasim Akram too. Where did 'India' come from ? Particular management needs to be blamed NOT the whole India. lol I hope, u get my point. Wayamba seems to have the strongest batting line-up, but their bowling is INDEED weakest. But as this is T-20, it won't matter much as long as it is being played in sub-continent where generally batsmen dominate.

  • 101010101010 on August 12, 2012, 17:12 GMT

I wish Mr. Ganguly watches this game & realize what asset he had & misused. SLPL is the real cricketing tournament where players may earn their skill in full & certainly better than IPL in cricketing concern. There is no arrogance of captain in SLPL. They value the real players not only Aussies as in IPL. Wish Wayamba will make it again for CLT20.

Well Played Tamim and Kamran....Good reply by Tamim to IPL team and Ganguly

Well this was the first time I saw SLPL well only the second innings because Tamim was playing and yeah what a phenomenal innings absolutely breathtaking and where are the jealous fans that say he's not talented? Him winning the Man of the Match speaks for itself so we can put that to rest, he's only 23 years of age and is still maturing and developing as person and player. Good to see Kamran playing his game and I heard he will playing for Pakistan again interesting. The game itself was entertaining but just a shame Tamim just couldn't manage to achieve his maiden T20 100 but doesn't matter because its all about the team and at that rate, there was just no way of getting him out because his shots especially selection was top class. Also I just want to say where's Pune Warriors? haha...because this is what you missed otherwise you wouldn't be sitting at the rock end of the bottom but no continue using players like Ryder, Dada or Clarke who proved to be unsuccessful in the IPL :)

Both Tamim & Pune Warriors will regret today! Tamim scored his career best T20 innings here. But he might've scored maiden T20 100 if it would 1st innings batting. Wyamba completed 4 balls before completion of 20th over. Pune struggled with top order batting in IPL 5 but Tamim remained in reserve bench. Sahara group may rethink it next season. Btw, cheers for Wyamba & Jayawardene. Wanna see Great Jayawardene, Akmal Brothers & Tamim in Champions league this year.
