Sri Lanka Premier League - Final

Uva Next v Nagenahira Nagas

Uva Next won by 19 runs (D/L method)

Imran Nazir on strike. Ahmed Shahzad is his partner. Oram to bowl

8.00 pm Dean Jones on air, says that there could be rain later.

Mathews: Cannot control the weather, just want to do well. Uva have done well so the challenge will be to do well. Slow track I think, 160 will be a good score.

Kandamby: I would have wanted to bat first, want to restrict them to 160. Dilhara Fernando is fit for us. We had a good chat and we think we can chase down 160.

7.35 pm, Toss: Nagenahira Nagas have won the toss and they will bat first in this final.

7.25 pm The weather has stayed fine all through the day, unlike the poor conditions on Wednesday for the second semi-final. It was clouding over a tad in the last one hour or so but we hope to get through this without too much trouble.

Hello and welcome to the final of the first ever Sri Lanka Premier League 2012, where two unlikely teams have made it to final. I am Suneer Chowdhary and will bring you this match between Uva Next and Nagenahira Nagas, that will not only decide the winner of this first edition of the tournament but also the Sri Lankan representative in the Champions League T20 this season.

Incidentally, 13 of the 14 teams to feature in this edition of the CLT20 have been decided with tonight's winners taking the last slot.

0.1

Oram to Imran Nazir, no run, outside the off stump, slight swing back into the right-hander and he lets it go, fuller too from the big man

0.2

Oram to Imran Nazir, no run, and this one jags away from the batsman! Pitched on length and then seamed away, Nazir was tempted to have a poke at it!

0.3

Oram to Imran Nazir, 1 run, short of length, wanted to pull it away but that gets big on him, cannot control the shot but does not reach the deep square-leg fielder

0.4

Oram to Ahmed Shehzad, 2 runs, first ball and he jumps across outside the off stump, pulls it in front of the square-leg for a couple of runs

0.5

Oram to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, lets it go through, it was angling in and Nazir shoulders arms

0.6

Oram to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, fuller outside the off stump, leans forward and defends it out to the covers, ends the first over

End of over 1 (3 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 3/0
Ahmed Shehzad    2* (3b)      JDP Oram    1-0-3-0
Imran Nazir    1* (3b)

Signs in that over that the openers may try to push Oram out of that comfort zone that he has got into this tournament, bowling that nagging line and length.

Umar Gul comes in now. He will have an eye over in the UAE where Pakistan is currently playing Australia.

1.1

Umar Gul to Imran Nazir, 1 run, short of length, on the middle stump, pushed to the leg side for a quick single

1.3

Umar Gul to Imran Nazir, no run, on the off stump, good length and the batsman did not know whether to go forward or back, defends it from his crease

1.4

Umar Gul to Imran Nazir, 4 leg byes, too many balls on the middle and leg and this one hits his pads and rolls through fine-leg for a four

1.5

Umar Gul to Imran Nazir, no run, compensates by bowling outside the off, short of length and Nazir had the width to free his arms, instead he taps it to the covers

1.6

Umar Gul to Imran Nazir, no run, and again he goes down the track to drill it through the leg side, the delivery was going down too but it was too quick for the batsman, misses timing it and it hits the pads, bit of an appeal too but the umpire says no

End of over 2 (7 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 10/0
Imran Nazir    2* (8b)      Umar Gul    1-0-2-0
Ahmed Shehzad    2* (4b)      JDP Oram    1-0-3-0

2.1

Oram to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, outside the off and swings away after looking to come back into the bat, beats the outside edge

Oram to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, couple of steps down the track, the bowler shortens the length too and the batsman fails to get any bat on it, hits his thigh pad

Oram to Imran Nazir, no run, room, swing, miss! He was giving himself room in order to swing the bat over the covers, but did not get close to hitting it

2.5

Oram to Imran Nazir, 1 run, dropped! pressure built up, he went for a pull after going down and went straight to the fielder Seekkuge Prasanna, at deep square-leg, and out it spills!

2.6

Oram to Ahmed Shehzad, 2 runs, inside edge through to in front of deep square-leg for a couple of runs, another good over from Oram

End of over 3 (4 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 14/0
Ahmed Shehzad    5* (8b)      JDP Oram    2-0-7-0
Imran Nazir    3* (10b)      Umar Gul    1-0-2-0

3.1

Umar Gul to Imran Nazir, no run, outside the off stump and short of length, there was some width there too but it gets too big on the batsman who is only able to dab it away to the covers

3.2

Umar Gul to Imran Nazir, 1 run, tries to hoick it away, misses hitting the middle as has been the case throughout the innings, and the swipe hits the top edge, falls very short of mid-off

3.3

Umar Gul to Ahmed Shehzad, FOUR, finally, finally a boundary off the bat, it was short of length and he was able to swivel away, pulled in front of square for a boundary, slips are off now

3.4

Umar Gul to Ahmed Shehzad, FOUR, down the track this time and smoked over mid-on for a four, it just went over the fielder but it was enough to carry it to the fence

3.5

Umar Gul to Ahmed Shehzad, FOUR, another one, three in three, this time over the bowler's head, it was a slower one and the ball has been hit much faster back over Gul, gone for a boundary

3.6

Umar Gul to Ahmed Shehzad, 1 run, on the middle stump, Shehzad moves across to the off stump and flicks it over short fine-leg for a single

End of over 4 (14 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 28/0

Imran Nazir    4* (12b)      JDP Oram    2-0-7-0

4.1

Oram to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, was going down the track, it was bowled rather fuller and the batsman digs it away to mid-on

4.2

Oram to Ahmed Shehzad, OUT, gone this time, Oram finally has one, it was short of length and the batsman went for it again, I think it came slower on to the batsman than he thought he would and he mistimes it, loops up to the mid-wicket region for a simple catch - and this time it is caught!

Ahmed Shehzad c Chanderpaul b Oram 18 (14b 3x4 0x6) SR: 128.57

Travis Birt at three.

4.3

Oram to Birt, no run, outside the off stump, length ball and he lets that one go through to the keeper

4.4

Oram to Birt, no run, outside the off yet again, he shoulders arm again and it goes through to the keeper

4.5

Oram to Birt, no run, beaten this time! It was on the off stump, corrects his line and he tried to push at it, misses the outside edge

4.6

Oram to Birt, 2 runs, slower ball, on the middle, the batsman was almost deceived before he brought his bat down, flicked to short fine-leg where Dilhara Fernando struggles to get down and they are able to get two

End of over 5 (2 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 30/1
TR Birt    2* (4b)      JDP Oram    3-0-9-1
Imran Nazir    4* (12b)      Umar Gul    2-0-16-0

McDonald comes in.

5.1

McDonald to Imran Nazir, no run, on the middle, fuller and he tries to flick it away, straight to mid-wicket

5.2

McDonald to Imran Nazir, 1 run, very slow outside the off, he was giving himself to hit it inside out, instead the slowness of pace makes him hit across to deep square-leg

5.3

McDonald to Birt, no run, was going down the track, it was on the leg stump and angling down, hits the pads and rolls over to the keeper

5.4

McDonald to Birt, no run, on the off stump and this one moves away from the left-hander, misses the outside edge and through to the keeper

5.5

McDonald to Birt, no run, goes for a swing, slightly fuller on the off and he misses it, through to the keeper!

5.6

McDonald to Birt, 1 run, dropped! again, a second sitter goes down, it was fuller on the off and he went for a drive, went straight to mid-off where Fernando makes a mess of it!

End of over 6 (2 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 32/1
TR Birt    3* (8b)      AB McDonald    1-0-2-0
Imran Nazir    5* (14b)      JDP Oram    3-0-9-1

Prasanna to Birt, no run, on the middle, no spin, punched back to the bowler

6.2

6.3

Prasanna to Birt, 2 runs, on the leg stump, bit of turn and he has pushed it to the deep square-leg for a couple of runs

6.4

Prasanna to Birt, no run, and that one turns huge! he was giving himself room to cut it away, but it spins in to beat the cut

6.5

Prasanna to Birt, 1 run, another one turns there, he was again moving outside the leg but the turn defeats him, gets a leading edge to the leg side

6.6

Prasanna to Imran Nazir, 1 run, unleashes the sweep, off the middle of the bat and it goes to the deep square-leg fielder

End of over 7 (4 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 36/1
Imran Nazir    6* (15b)      S Prasanna    1-0-4-0
TR Birt    6* (13b)      AB McDonald    1-0-2-0

7.1

McDonald to Imran Nazir, OUT, gone, bowled him! it was straight, on the middle, length ball, went for a swipe and missed, and when that happens the stumps are bound to get hit, end of a scratchy knock from Nazir

Imran Nazir b McDonald 6 (16b 0x4 0x6) SR: 37.50

Captain Mathews comes in at a time his team needs him the most.

7.2

McDonald to Mathews, 1 run, on the off stump, on a length and he plays it down to third-man to open his account

7.3

McDonald to Birt, 2 runs, outside the off stump, on a length and he opens the face of the bat through to third-man, the fielder has to run around from the finer position to field that

7.4

McDonald to Birt, no run, length ball on the off, pushed to short cover

7.5

McDonald to Birt, 2 runs, on the middle stump, short of length too and he hoicks it away to fine-leg, the outfields a tad heavy and they are able to restrict the batsman to two

7.6

McDonald to Birt, OUT, gone, caught at long-on! Second wicket in the over, he went for a hit over long-on, it seemed to have come off the middle but went to the fielder perched at the long-on fence and this time he catches it above his head and well!

TR Birt c Prasanna b McDonald 10 (17b 0x4 0x6) SR: 58.82

End of over 8 (5 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 41/3

Oram comes on

8.1

Oram to Sampath, no run, length ball, angling into the batsman, defended on the back foot back to the bowler

8.2

Oram to Sampath, no run, length ball yet again and on the off stump, he is unable to get it away and defends it back to the bowler

8.3

Oram to Sampath, no run, pitched right up to the batsman this one, on the off and driven to short cover fielder, the fielder is up and there was never going to be a single

8.4

Oram to Sampath, 2 leg byes, thuds back into the batsman from length, rolls over through the slips to the third-man and that should have been a single, poor fielding from Fernando yet again and they are able to come back for the second

8.5

Oram to Sampath, FOUR, short one and this was pulled away to deep square-leg for a four, finally a movement on the scoreboard!

8.6

Oram to Sampath, no run, slower bouncer and by slower I mean really slower, you could have played two strokes to it and still wait for the ball to come, that is what happened as he went for the pull and mistimes it towards short fine-leg, the keeper tidies up and stops the single!

Match State: Delay - Rain

End of over 9 (6 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 47/3
TN Sampath    4* (6b 1x4)      JDP Oram    4-0-13-1
AD Mathews    1* (1b)      AB McDonald    2-0-7-2

It had started to rain and the covers were coming on but the umpire sends them back on their way!

9.1

Senanayake to Mathews, no run, outside the off, no turn and he defends it back...and oh oh...it's begun to rain again!

Our man at Colombo, Andrew Fernando, has this to say: Some really heavy stuff coming down now, not looking good at all

...and we are away! 15 overs-a-side. Only 35 balls remain for the Nagas, the decision at the toss becomes surprising all of a sudden!

10.45 pm Covers coming off again and the stumps are going back in the ground. Will we see some play finally or is it false dawn yet again?

10.35 pm It is not raining but for some reason the covers are going back on. Possibly because they have deemed the ground unfit to play for now. 11.20 pm is the cutoff time, i.e., if we have a game at that time, Uva will be chasing something down in five overs.

9.50 pm Sri Lankan pop duo Bathiya and Santhush are entertaining the crowd as the drying continues.

Our man, Andrew Fernando shares this interesting story about R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. This ground, he says, was built on a swamp. They raised the playing surface one metre before the World Cup to solve some of the drainage issues, but it's still one of the slower draining grounds around.

9.40 pm Light drizzle for a few minutes before it stops. All adds to the delay.

9.16 pm Covers are almost completely off now. So that is some good news.

9.08 pm Covers coming off now, but drying could take some time.

9.00 pm And as quickly as the rain began, it's stopped completely. Will it stay away? It was a heavy downpour, so either way we are in for a long delay.

9.2

Senanayake to Mathews, FOUR, down the ground and smacks the first ball after resumption for a four! Over the bowler's head!

9.3

Senanayake to Mathews, 2 runs, on his pads and driven through mid-wicket, it is easily one of the wettest outfields I have seen and the players are not risking any slides there, fields gingerly and throws it back

9.4

Senanayake to Mathews, no run, on the off stump and pushed to the covers

9.5

Senanayake to Mathews, 1 run, short of length, he goes on to his back foot and drives it down the ground for a single

9.6

Senanayake to Sampath, 1 wide, goes way outside the off stump and tries to paddle it over fine-leg, misses and it is a wide called

9.6

Senanayake to Sampath, no run, length ball, pushed to the leg side and the batsman was away for a single, only problem was that the non-striker was having none of it and sent him back, fortunately the bowler, who ran to his right, fumbled with the wet ball and failed to get a throw to the keeper

End of over 10 (8 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 55/3
TN Sampath    4* (7b 1x4)      SMSM Senanayake    1-0-8-0
AD Mathews    8* (6b 1x4)      JDP Oram    4-0-13-1

Fernando comes on. Poor day in the field for him so far.

10.1

Fernando to Mathews, 1 run, slower one on the middle stump, it almost floated in the air for some time, pushed to the leg side and they are away for a single

10.2

Fernando to Sampath, FOUR, he tries to play it over short fine-leg yet again and this time he does succeed in getting it to the fence, was a slower ball but read well by the batsman

10.3

Fernando to Sampath, 1 leg bye, tries that again, the Dilscoop, hits it straight into his helmet! rolls over to the off side for a single

10.4

Fernando to Mathews, 2 wides, and the inevitable wide from Fernando, slips out of his hands and goes over the batsman's head, called a wide, should have been a no-ball for the height

10.4

Fernando to Sampath, 1 run, blazed through the covers and they get a single, misfielded because of the conditions, but the captain wasn't interested in the second

10.5

Fernando to Mathews, 1 run, length ball on the leg-stump, wanted to drag it over the leg side, gets an inside edge to fine-leg for a single

10.6

Fernando to Sampath, OUT, top-edge and caught! He went for a pull and the bat came off one of his hands, gets a top edge and it goes high up, the bowler comes under and despite fears of a collision with the keeper, takes it well

TN Sampath c & b Fernando 9 (11b 2x4 0x6) SR: 81.81

End of over 11 (10 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 65/4
     CRD Fernando    1-0-9-1
AD Mathews    10* (8b 1x4)      SMSM Senanayake    1-0-8-0

11.1

McDonald to Mathews, 1 run, outside the off stump, slower and pushed to the off side for a single

11.2

McDonald to de Grandhomme, 3 runs, short arm jab and almost goes to mid-wicket fence, some good fielding in the deep and does well to restrict it to two

11.3

McDonald to Mathews, SIX, outside the off stump, short and not too quick either, he went for a cover drive but over the top and it goes for a six! The ball boy outside the ropes takes a bad tumble given the wet, wet outfield there!

11.4

McDonald to Mathews, FOUR, full-toss on the off stump, and drilled down the ground, the long-off fielder fails to get around

11.5

McDonald to Mathews, 2 runs, short of length, slow again, and pulled away for a couple of runs, this is a good over so far!

11.6

McDonald to Mathews, 1 run, short of length, spanked to long-on, again the batsman wanted a second and came halfway down, Mathews sends him back

End of over 12 (17 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 82/4
AD Mathews    24* (13b 2x4 1x6)      AB McDonald    3-0-24-2
C de Grandhomme    3* (1b)      CRD Fernando    1-0-9-1

And what do we have now? A strategic time-out.

12.1

Fernando to Mathews, FOUR, outside the off stump, short of length and cut away, poor ball hit over point for four!

12.2

Fernando to Mathews, SIX, pitched right up to the bat and look at that, hit off the bottom of the bat, short flick over deep square-leg for a six!

12.3

Fernando to Mathews, FOUR, short and slow and swivelled away to pull it to the backward square-leg region for a four, not too many fielders there!

12.4

Fernando to Mathews, no run, swings, misses! That seemed like it was in his zone, length ball outside the off, and he wanted to hit it over mid-wicket, did not get anywhere close to the bat

Fernando took a tumble on his follow-through there. Not happy at all.

12.5

Fernando to Mathews, FOUR, short and wide and he pulls it in front of square, through mid-wicket foe a four, this is getting to dangerous proportions for the Uva Next

12.6

Fernando to Mathews, FOUR, four more, carnage here, short of length outside the off and that has been spanked back to long-on, who dives way too early, probably because of the slippery outfield and it goes through

End of over 13 (22 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 104/4
AD Mathews    46* (19b 6x4 2x6)      CRD Fernando    2-0-31-1
C de Grandhomme    3* (1b)      AB McDonald    3-0-24-2

Umar Gul will bowl this one. Who will bowl the last? Fernando? Prasanna? Senanayake? Oh wait, it is Prasanna bowling this one.

13.1

Prasanna to de Grandhomme, 1 run, short of length, he was trying to hit it through the leg side, but does not get any timing on it

13.2

Prasanna to Mathews, 1 run, walks down the track to try and hit it over the top but manages to only tap it to long-on for a single

13.3

Prasanna to de Grandhomme, 1 run, goes down the track yet again and the bowler drops it a tad short, punched through to the covers for a single

13.4

Prasanna to Mathews, SIX, down the track and six! 21 balls for a 50 for the captain and this has been an innings to remember given the context, shimmied down quickly and cracked it over mid-wicket

13.5

Prasanna to Mathews, 2 runs, tries a repeat of the shot and gets an inside edge, rolls across to fine-leg and by the time Chanders fields it, they are back for the second

13.6

Prasanna to Mathews, 2 runs, short of length and thumped down to long-off for a couple, 13 off the over but it also means that Mathews has lost the strike for the first ball of the over.

End of over 14 (13 runs) Nagenahira Nagas 117/4
AD Mathews    57* (23b 6x4 3x6)      S Prasanna    2-0-17-0
C de Grandhomme    5* (3b)      CRD Fernando    2-0-31-1

Last over of the innings. Matthews has gotten his half-century off only almost nothing. Gul, as expected, comes on.

14.1

Umar Gul to de Grandhomme, no run, yorker length, outside the off stump and he tries to dig it out but misses, through to the keeper and they are unable to go for the bye

14.2

Umar Gul to de Grandhomme, 1 run, full toss on the off stump, hit to the off side for a single, which brings the captain on strike

14.3

Umar Gul to Mathews, FOUR, that is one of the better shots of the innings, it seemed to be a very good ball, wide, yorker length and when he hit that it looked like he hadn't timed it, instead it beats both, point and third-man and goes through to the deep point fence for a four!

14.4

Umar Gul to Mathews, 2 runs, full-toss, angling in and slapped through mid-wicket, they are easily able to come back for the second given that the fielder needed time to run across

14.5

Umar Gul to Mathews, FOUR, short ball, poor one this one and Mathews was waiting for it, he has pulled it over mid-wicket for four!

14.6

Umar Gul to Mathews, SIX
