Australia in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Sri Lanka v Australia

Sri Lanka won by 78 runs

4.1

Johnson to Dilshan, 2 runs, he begins with a back of length ball on off stump, and Dilshan almost compulsively heaves it off the front foot without timing, into the wide mid-off area. Lee does well to stop it, but Tharanga hustles back and dives in for a risky second.

4.2

Johnson to Dilshan, no run, pitches it up, and gets Dilshan driving, but he is conscious in trying to keep it down. There is a man at point and another at a short cover. The trap is set ...

4.3

Johnson to Dilshan, no run, this one bends in, but from middle and leg line and Dilshan looks to work it off the pads. He can't get it away.

4.4

Johnson to Dilshan, FOUR, top shot, with the Dilshan trademark. It is that workmanlike cover drive of his, striving to get muscle behind a ball that's not over-pitched. This was not driving length by any stretch of imagination, but you wouldn't believe that if you saw how Dilshan managed to power it away.

4.5

Johnson to Dilshan, 1 run, on the pads, Dilshan nudges a single through midwicket for one more.

4.6

Johnson to Tharanga, 1 run, shoddy start from Mitch, another one on the pads and Tharanga whips a single through square leg.

Sri Lanka 27/0   MG Johnson 1-0-8-0

6.1

Johnson to Dilshan, no run, and Dilshan now, plays all over a ball that thunders up from back of a length and goes over the stumps. This is tough!

6.2

Johnson to Dilshan, FOUR, Dilshan at his idiosyncratic best here. Beaten last ball? What beaten? The moment it is pitched up, he goes after it with a vengeance and blasts it through the covers. Scorching shot.

6.3

Johnson to Dilshan, 1 run, extra bounce from a length, Dilshan was surprised and yanked the bottom hand off as he dropped it to the leg side for one.

6.4

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, back of a length on off stump, a mini-victory for Tharanga, he plays a solid forward defensive.

6.5

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, back to normal service. Mitch beats him outside off with a ball that swerves away at pace from a length. Tharanga has two left feet, only that can explain the complete lack of footwork here.

6.6

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, another swish and a miss. He just tries to steer this without getting across, but Mitch is too fast for such mischief.

Sri Lanka 36/0   MG Johnson 2-0-13-0

8.1

Johnson to Dilshan, 1 run, slower ball to Dilshan who is sucked into an early check-drive and mistimes it through the covers.

8.2

Johnson to Tharanga, 2 runs, this one ducks into the pads, and Tharanga gets bat on it as he nudges a couple to the leg side.

8.3

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, straight again, Tharanga looks a lot better when it comes into him. Defends solidly down the track.

8.4

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, on a length around off stump, Tharanga defends to the off sode.

8.5

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, Pinch! Ouch! Not a dream! Tharanga gets bat on one! Outside off! Back of a length! Confidently pushed down to mid-off

8.6

Johnson to Tharanga, 1 run, and he even gets a single this time, shifting back in the crease and steering a ball outside off through backward point.

Sri Lanka 41/0   MG Johnson 3-0-17-0

10.1

Johnson to Dilshan, no run, tight line, on middle and leg and angling across from short of a length. Dilshan defends.

10.2

Johnson to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan squeezes a mistimed on the up cover drive past the man at short cover. They should have got two there, but settle for one.

10.3

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, and a telling bouncer from Mitch, whanged in well short and heading for Tharanga's grille. He ducks.

10.4

Johnson to Tharanga, 2 runs, on Tharanga's pads and he quietly nudges it through square leg for a couple. SL have 50 on the board.

10.5

Johnson to Tharanga, 1 run, He may be old, he may have battered fingers, but he is still the kind at point. Ponting dives away to his left to stop a scorching cut from Tharanga and saves three runs.

10.6

Johnson to Dilshan, 1 run, back of a length outside off, Dilshan eases the drive into the covers.

Sri Lanka 52/0   MG Johnson 4-0-22-0

28.1

Johnson to Sangakkara, 1 run, Sanga shuffles well inside the line as Mitch sprays it down the leg side. Worked down to fine leg for a single.

28.2

Johnson to Tharanga, 2 runs, Mitch is getting the ball to reverse now, this swerves in sharp and late at Tharanga's pads and he does particularly well to time the flick through midwicket.

28.3

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, back of a length outside off, Tharanga dabs it towards point from the crease.,

28.4

Johnson to Tharanga, 2 runs, ominous timing from Tharanga. He whips the offcutter through the gap between mid-on and a slow-moving Watson at midwicket. Still they only get a couple. Surely there was a third in there as Watto had to slide and haul it in on the boundary.

28.5

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, short ball on off stump, Tharanga defends from the crease.

28.6

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, cuts him up with a late inducker that hits the pad.

Sri Lanka 163/1   MG Johnson 5-0-27-0

30.1

Johnson to Sangakkara, no run, Mitch wangs another one into Sanga's pads and it is firmly on-driven to mid-on.

30.2

Johnson to Sangakkara, 1 run, and again on the pads, Sanga gets it away through square leg for a single.

30.3

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, bouncer, Tharanga gets under it and immediately checks to see the square-leg umpire's call ...

30.4

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, he's attacking the pads here, and Tharanga does well to keep him out. Played into the on-side.

30.5

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, width outside off, too much of it and Tharanga can't reach it. Not called a wide, but quite close.

30.6

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, a very quiet over that. Tharanga forces the cut off the last ball, and finds the man at cover-point.

Sri Lanka 167/1   MG Johnson 6-0-28-0

32.1

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, Tharanga should invest in some lottery tickets today. He's been let off, though it would be unfair to term it a drop. Length ball from over the stumps and he absolutely clobbers it back to the bowler. Mitch gets his left hand to it, but it doesn't stick.

32.2

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, and a bouncer to follow up, Tharanga ducks under it. He's played a large number of dot balls recently, hasn't he ...

32.3

Johnson to Tharanga, 1 run, on the pads, Tharanga works it through midwicket for a single.

32.4

Johnson to Sangakkara, 1 run, superb yorker and Sanga does really well to dig it out and take off for a quick single. Johnson tears away to the off side to field it, but can't stop the single.

32.5

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, this Tharanga innings is becoming a study in the theatre of absurdity! Short ball, his timing seems to be deserting him now. He is early on the pull and toe-ends it cluelessly into the off side.

32.6

Johnson to Tharanga, no run, better, gets behind the line and drills a length ball back to Mitch.

Sri Lanka 175/1   MG Johnson 7-0-30-0

46.1

Johnson to Jayawardene, 1 run, slow bouncer, 125 kph and it comes on late as Mahela rolls his wrists on the pull and gets a single to deep backward square leg. Poor running, really, that should have been two.

46.2

Johnson to BMAJ Mendis, 1 run, whanged in back of a length, Jeevan dabs it to Ponting at point. Needless throw in hindsight to the bowler's end, hits the stumps and runs away for an overthrow.

46.3

Johnson to Jayawardene, 1 run, Mahela pinches a single, forcing a length ball to mid-off.

46.4

Johnson to BMAJ Mendis, OUT, another one bites a dust. Mitch gets into the act and Jeevan is out, as plumb an lbw as you will see. Full, pacy and curving in towards middle and leg. Jeevan ambitiously plonked the front foot forward and looked to slam it over the leg side, and ended up playing all over it. The umpire's decision was quick, he's pinned in front of middle and leg.

BMAJ Mendis lbw b Johnson 1 (5m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

46.5

Johnson to Kulasekara, 1 wide, Mitch angles this too far down the leg side and it is a wide.

46.5

Johnson to Kulasekara, no run, nearly a wide on the other side, he gets away with it just inside the off side tram line.

46.6

Johnson to Kulasekara, 1 run, length ball on off stump to end the over, Kula forces it into the covers to open his account.

Sri Lanka 257/6   MG Johnson 8-0-35-1

48.1

Johnson to Kulasekara, 1 run, back of a length to Kula, he stands behind the line and taps a single into the off sode.

48.2

Johnson to Jayawardene, FOUR, another one from the top-drawer. Mahela again makes his own room as he backs away and threads a cut through point. An inch of width was all Mitch offered, Mahela took a foot and more out of it!

48.3

Johnson to Jayawardene, FOUR, another stunner! Back of a length ball, angling across without offering any room, Mahela stays put on the crease and booms it over the top of extra cover. All timing, and he nearly gets six through the toughest area to time a ball in the cricket field. Off a good ball. Against a very good fast bowler. Wow!

48.4

Johnson to Jayawardene, 1 run, Mitch goes round the wicket and angles it in in an attempt to cut off all width. Mahela works him with the angle to deep midwicket for one.

48.5

Johnson to Kulasekara, OUT, Kula falls in the search for boundaries, backs away to a short of length ball and looks to hoist it over the covers. Didn't get much timing into that shot, and an easy catch for the deep point fielder running in.

KMDN Kulasekara c MEK Hussey b Johnson 4 (10m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

48.6

Johnson to Jayawardene, no run, low full toss wide of off stump at 141 kph and Mahela is livid with himself for having missed out on the square drive.
