Warne-Muralitharan Trophy - 1st Test

Sri Lanka v Australia

Australia won by 125 runs

Overs 0-50

The players walk out under clear blue skies. All set for the start of the second day's play. Ryan Harris it will be to start off with the new ball and Paranavitana will take strike to three slips, short leg and a man around short cover

Nathan: "Calling it early: Sri Lanka 3 down at drinks, with Copeland bowling a superb line and length for two edges, and Johnson getting a lucky wicket caught at mid on."

9.45 am Deliveries exploding off the pitch, leaving puffs of dust in their wake, spin striking with its first delivery, all on day one, welcome to traditional subcontinent conditions. Sri Lanka got Australia for under 300, and pretty often in the subcontinent, if you don't make the first innings count, you are chasing the game from there on. Australia's spin attack consists of a debutant with five first-class games behind him and a part-timer. The Sri Lanka seamers got the ball to kick from a length and later moved the old ball around quite a bit. So there is hope for Australia's three-man pace attack, which also has a debutant

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

0.1

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, pretty harmless delivery to start off, angled across the left-hander on a length, some way outside off, left alone

0.2

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, more pace on this one, similar line, similar length, more bounce, left alone again

0.3

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, third delivery in that area outside the off stump, no zip at all in this one, goes limply to Haddin as Para shoulders arms

0.4

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, makes him play for the first time, not much on it though from a length, and he has enough time to shuffle across and play it on the leg side

0.5

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, better line, around off stump, he stays beside the line and pushes on the off side

0.6

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, Harris cranks up the pace on the final delivery, hitting Para's bat hard from a length and it rolls away on the off side

Sancho: "Doesnt say much for the renewal of the Australian team when their two oldest players got the highest scores. How much would Katich have scored, nudging and nurdling the spinners?" Copeland on Test debut comes on

1.1

Copeland to Dilshan, FOUR, and he is put away first ball, Dilshan doesn't care much about the condition of the pitch, he only sees the full length close to off stump, reaches out with the bat and not with the foot and clatters him through extra cover

1.2

Copeland to Dilshan, OUT, and he goes after the next one too, but ends up gifting Copeland his first Test wicket! Dilshan trying to take on the debutant and sticking to his way of going after pitched up deliveries outside off, this one was floated a touch wider, drew him out that much more and then moved away, the flailing drive from Dilshan flew in the air and Ricky Ponting at short cover snaps it up smoothly, that was screaming past him, Copeland roars, Dilshan walks

TM Dilshan c Ponting b Copeland 4 (4m 2b 1x4 0x6) SR: 200.00

1.3

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, whippy smooth action makes the length ball bounce outside off, Sanga leaves

1.4

Copeland to Sangakkara, 1 run, off the mark now with a nudge towards midwicket off the pads

1.5

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, fine start from the debutant this is, on target outside that off stump from a mighty smooth run-up, he moves forward and shoulders arms

1.6

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, he is reputed to operate on a Stuart Clarke-ish length, and that is what he is doing in his first over, giving nothing away, close to off, left alone

End of over 2 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 5/1

Chris J: "Watch out SL. This is the kind of wicket, old fashioned English medium paced pros used to love bowling on. Copeland for a bagful!"

2.1

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, Harris bangs the ball in, couldn't me more different than Copeland who 'releases' it, left alone as it bounces outside off from back of a length

2.2

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, another leave outside the off stump

2.3

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, Ponting is lurking close by on the off side for that drive in the air, but Sanga keeps it along the ground as he pushes forward

2.4

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, this one does not get up much at all outside off, Sanga watches it go past him, that will continue to be a worry for batsmen on this pitch, you cannot trust the bounce

2.5

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, straightish one played out towards midwicket

Shane: "Dilshan has got sucked in like so many players (at lower levels) before him with Copeland. Limited pace but his line and length require respect."

2.6

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, eep, now he goes flailing at a very full and widish one outside off, fortunately he does not get anything on it

Given the condition of the pitch, one would think they would be a bit more careful, but then the argument to that is, it takes only one brute on this one to take you out, so make the most of your time

3.1

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, Copeland on target again, close to off stump, hurls it in on a length, left alone

3.2

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, tighter line still, ending right on that off stump, pushed away on the off side

3.3

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, just outside the off stump now, talk about settling in on a line, Para gets to it and defends

3.4

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, now a leave to one not far from off stump

3.5

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, takes a step out and lets a length ball go across him outside off

Mausifan: "This is not a T20 match, its a test match and it should be played as one. No idea what Dilshan was trying to do, even after hitting the previous ball for four. Hope the other batters will take their time & play patiently."

3.6

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, now he finds some bounce as this one hangs in the air for a bit longer, lands on a length and kicks up outside off, fine leave in the end

End of over 4 (maiden) Sri Lanka 5/1

4.1

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, 136.5 kph from Harris, but he spotted the line early and allowed it go past him outside off

4.2

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, makes him play with a much fuller length on the stumps, Sanga gets behind it and pushes down the track

4.3

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, much fuller and going across, Sanga is a touch late on it in getting forward, but manages to push towards mid off

4.4

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, touch wider outside off stump and he leaves it right away

Tom: "Harris, Copeland and Johnson. Finally a bowling attack that looks threatening. I dunno how Lyon will go but this is an attack that should stick."

4.5

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, gets it to move away a shade from around middle and leg, but touch shortish and he is able to shuffle across, get in line and push it away

4.6

Harris to Sangakkara, no run, fuller delivery produces the edge, not driving length, not short too, he is caught on the crease as it zips across from around leg, but the thick edge carries along the ground towards backward point

5.1

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, Copeland goes full outside off stump, gets it to zip after pitching close to off, he gets forward with a bit of an open face to run it away, but it goes towards gully

5.2

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, left alone from a length outside off

5.3

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, 126 kph and too much outside off to interest him

5.4

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, smartly forward and smothers a length ball on the off side

ryan: "what is all the fuss about? the pitch looks FLAT!" Not if you watched the spinners bowl yesterday. There is a man, Hughes, at a silly coverish position

5.5

Copeland to Paranavitana, 1 run, full delivery driven past the man close in towards extra cover

5.6

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, slants it across the left-hander who takes a step out and watches it go, tight lines these, mighty tight

Gareth: "I've been a long time critic of the Aussie selectors but i think they've finally got it right with the likes of Khawaja, Copes and Harris. Siddle, Hilfenhaus and North held us back for too long. Bring on the Aussie summer!"

6.1

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, 138.7 kph from Harris, hurries him in to a forward push towards covers

6.2

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, well bowled, hurrying on from a length on off stump, he defends bat and pad close together

6.3

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, the bouncer, surprises the batsman as it rears up at him, goes just over his head as he goes under

6.4

Harris to Paranavitana, 4 leg byes, they havent given much till now, this one is a gift though, going down the pads and he gets enough on it to tickle it past Haddin

6.5

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, superb leave from Para, close to the off stump on the angle, bouncing too, he shuffles across, and lets it go, couple of inches away from the body

6.6

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, solid push off the front foot, straight to mid off

7.1

Copeland to Sangakkara, 1 run, goes around middle and leg and Sanga picks him in front of square leg

Adam: "@ Gareth - I think if you look back at the Ashes Siddle was the only Aussie bowler that held his own!" Forward Short leg, very short cover

7.2

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, gets forward to a full delivery outside off stump and allows it to past

7.3

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, Copeland looks like he could be bowling this line all day, around that off stump, Para leaves wisely

7.4

Copeland to Paranavitana, no run, touch fuller, makes him go forward, head on top of ball, crouching low to defend

7.5

Copeland to Paranavitana, 1 run, opens the face to a full one to run the drive past the man at very short cover

7.6

Copeland to Sangakkara, 1 run, Ponting got one of these yesterday, it seemed to stop on him off a fullish length as he looked to push on the on side, just managed to clear midwicket, puff of dust as it pitched

Nathan: "Don't think Hilfy won't be back, he has genuine ability. If he gets himself fully fit with speeds closer to 140 then he'll be back." Mitch in to the attack now

8.1

Johnson to Sangakkara, no run, fires it full and down the leg side first up

8.2

Johnson to Sangakkara, no run, Johnson could be a handful on this track with the old ball I think, he sings it full now on middle, and has Sanga pushing it back down the track

8.3

Johnson to Sangakkara, 1 run, a bit more on the angle from over the stumps, and Sanga pushes the fullish one between the bowler and mid on who does well to run across and cut it off

8.4

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, straightish one bouncing from a length, but a bit outside off, left alone

8.5

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, fuller on offnow, has him pushing down the track

8.6

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, 141 kph, in this heat, Johnson giving it a rip, getting it to hold its line outside off, he gets forward and runs it to gully

9.1

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, good leave from Sanga, he shuffled across, saw this one leaving him close to off and flagged it through

9.2

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, another good leave from Sanga, Copeland persevering outside off at 124.1 kph, won't bother many with that pace though, but it's that line, much like Praveen Kumar for India, who also gets a lot of swing

9.3

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, left alone as it bounces outside the off stump

9.4

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, slowish delivery, arrives on a length on off stump, he crouches low to block

Haddin standing up to Copeland

9.5

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, right on the fourth stump, he pushes forward and defends on the off side

Jimmy: "Lyon has the opportunity here to become the best Australian spinner since Beer and Doherty and Hauritz and Krejza and McGain and... What is my word limit here?" Ha!

10.1

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, 141.9 kph from Mitch, but a touch far outside off to make him fiddle with it, remember, he is not Dilshan

10.2

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, good bouncer, Johnson bangs it in at 145.5 kph, he sways out of the line alright, but Haddin has to leap in the air to take it

10.3

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, yipe, Mitch goes off target on this one, lots of shoulder takes it way outside off from back of a length

10.4

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, that's the line, close to that off stump, from short of a length, has him pushing with an open face towards point

Brett: "I can never fault Siddle's effort, but he tends to bowl one-dimensionally. I really want to see the young quicks (Pattinson, Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins etc.) have a big season this summer. Between Harris, Copeland, Johnson, Siddle and the young guys coming through (provided they can actually stay injury free!), there is the making of a very good pace bowling squad."

10.5

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, the full delivery now, not a bad one to bowl now and then, Para pushes it back to Mitch

10.6

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, just a bit of away movement as he slings it widish outside off stump, left alone

11.1

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, 123.4 kph around that off stump, he allows it to go past

Rob: "When was the last time Aus had an opening bowler who only bowled at 125km's? A very long time, I would imagine."

11.2

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, continues to test their patience with that accurate line around off stump, Sanga leaves

11.3

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, straightish around middle and leg, Sanga gets behind the line and pushes towards midwicket

11.4

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, whoa, this one keeps a bit low, shouldn;t comes as a surprise, batsman manages to keep it out as he crouches awkwardly

Haddin is standing up

11.5

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, pushed away on the off side from a length

11.6

Copeland to Sangakkara, 1 run, they have made 14 in almost 12 overs and now they want a tight single, well well, it was tucked in front of square leg who raced in, dived forward but there was not much in the underarm lob to Haddin and Para had managed to sneak in by the time Haddin got the bails off

Man standing right next to the non-striker, very straight short mid on

12.1

Johnson to Sangakkara, 1 run, plonked in front of point and Sanga gets across for the single, they will need more of this

12.2

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, eek, Johnson lets it rip full and it bounces down the leg side after it passes the batsman

12.3

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, now he hurls it wide outside the off stump, giving Haddin a tough time at the moment, that's about it

Chris J: "With Haddin keeping up to the wicket and the pitch uneven,i wonder what happens if he injures himself and cant keep, given theres no backup keeper on tour and Paine has broken his finger...another debut?"

12.4

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, and out of nowhere, he lets loose one on target, on off stump, and has him carefully defending off the front foot

12.5

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, another tight delivery, good return from Mitch in this over, another defensive push

12.6

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, the flowing drive, there have been very few of those, Ponting is around, when is he not, at covers to stop it easily

Brett: "Who cares if Copeland only bowls 125? With his accuracy and just a little bit of movement with the ball (not to mention his height), he could be a great McGrath-esque bowler for years to come. The exact kind of bowler Mitch Johnson needs up the other end to help him really flourish."

Now Copeland has a man beside the non-striker, at straight and short mid off

13.1

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, gets beside the line, stays in the crease and pushes a back of a length ball on the off side

13.2

Copeland to Sangakkara, FOUR, that has been put away, Sanga gets width from Copeland, a rarity, and eagerly goes after it, getting the slash well over the slips

13.3

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, reverts to the line close to off stump, and Sanga takes a step out to leave it

13.4

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, fuller, he leans out and pushes to covers

13.5

Copeland to Sangakkara, no run, that man at straight short mid off comes in to play as Sanga reaches out to push a fullish one to his right

Dan: "It was actually Stuart MacGill's suprise retirement that caused the selection drama for Australia regarding our spinners - not Warnies retirement. Everyone expected MacGill to hang around for some time...."

14.1

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, too short, too wide outside off, Para has nothing to do with it

14.2

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, hurls it fullish on off stump, moves in a shade if at all, Para is right forward in defence

14.3

Johnson to Paranavitana, FOUR, outside edge, but no luck for Mitch, as it runs Clarke at second slip, Para did not get fully forward and pushed the length ball with an open face, fortunately wide of Clarke

14.4

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, now he gives him the pact bouncer, Para goes down safely underneath

14.5

Johnson to Paranavitana, no run, there for the drive, full outside off, but Para checks his shot, taking a hand off the bat handle as he pushes at it

There have not been too many close moments for Sri Lanka, but they have dug themselves in to an ultra- defensive hole. The Australian seamers have played a major role in that with those tight lines

Dheeraj: "@Brett: Having witnessed zillions of Indian bowlers bowling medium pace, good batsmen will butcher you eventually at 125 odd. A latest case in example would be Praveen Kumar who inspite of his prodigious swing, didn't trouble the batsmen when the ball didn't much for him."

Shane: "Is it Para out there or has Tavare returned?" I shudder in deference

Greg B: "This attack includes 2 debutants and one bloke in his 6th Test, and yet Johnson STILL doesn't open the bowling. He is obligated to lead this attack. Weak captaincy and weak from Johnson. Made worse that Harris then gets hauled off after just 4 overs, all maidens. If Johnson won't or can't lead, he should be removed."

Justin: "Copeland reminds me of Derek Pringle... pedestrian pace and doesnt look like he'll get a wicket but does and you wonder how?"

The spinner comes on, Nathan Lyon, on Test debut, what a journey it has been for him

15.1

Lyon to Sangakkara, OUT, he has struck first ball, would you believe it! he has got Kumar Sangakkara, of all men, what a first Test wicket to have, off your first ball, flight from round the wicket, grip, turn, bounce, Sanga hangs out the bat away from the body, with a bit of an open face, Clarke snaps it up low with a lunge to his left at slip, superb catch, aye, aye, this is an attack being led by the debutants at the moment

Dheeraj: "I remember Nilesh Kulkarni also getting Atapattu on his first ball in test cricket. For whatever that was worth, SL plundered runs off the Indian bowling." Harris is back, from round the stumps

18.1

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, and beats Para outside off stump from back of a length, holding its line some way outside off, he goes pushing at it from the crease, misses and thwacks bat on the pad in frustration

18.2

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, angled in on on off stump, pushed off the front foot

18.3

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, another one hurled fullish with the angle, he gets behind the line and blocks

18.4

Harris to Paranavitana, no run, well left, dangerous to go prodding outside off with the angle from round the stumps, close to off from short of a length

If you thought Australia were in trouble yesterday, at least they were not made to crawl like Sri Lanka have been made to in this first session today. The debutants have done it for Australia, having a hand in all three dismissals, they have got the three big ones, Dilshan throwing it away off Copeland's second ball in Tests, Sanga going off Lyon's first ball in Tests and then Copeland running Mahela out. And the pressure that Australia's seamers have exerted has kept Paranavitana to 17 off 85 deliveries. I'll see you after lunch for what should be another absorbing session. Don't expect a gallop from the batsmen though

On Test debut, a proud Nathan Lyon leads Australia off the field with the ball in his hands. No fight at all from Sri Lanka, they were always under pressure after Dilshan's needless bravado early on. Australia doing everything right, seamers not giving anything away in terms of width or driving length, spinner coming in superbly on a helpful pitch, and allrounder proving his value with deadly reverse swing. Fielding backing up the bowling with total commitment in the sapping heat. 168 is a huge lead to concede on a breaking surface. Can Sri Lanka come back? Only if Australia's collapse is worse than theirs

Dave: "Lyon takes his first first class 5 for.... All of a sudden Lyon's first-class average looks respectable. Can't say that about many Aussie spinners."

briscricfan: "How often do you see the debutant take a wicket with both his first and last ball in his debut innings?"

Gareth: "Beer on ice as Lyon Roars."
