Herath rested for Bangladesh ODIs

Sri Lanka left-arm spinner Rangana Herath has been rested for the first two games of the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, which begins on March 23. Mahela Jayawardene missed out as he is yet to fully recover from a fracture to the middle finger of his left hand.

Tillakaratne Dilshan was included in the 16-man squad "subject to fitness" according to Sri Lanka Cricket's press release, and chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya said his involvement is subject to recovery from a quadriceps strain. However, Dilshan showed no signs of discomfort while bowling at the ongoing Test against Bangladesh on Monday.

Twenty-three-year-old batsmen Angelo Perera and Kithuruwan Vithanage earned call-ups, having both impressed in Sri Lanka's List A tournament, as well as the first-class competition. Vithanage had also debuted in Tests against Bangladesh in Galle. Allrounder Sachith Pathirana, also 23, also has a place in the 16-man squad.

Wicketkeeper-bastman Kushal Janith Perera, who is coming of first-class scores of 203, 97 and 336 in his last three matches, is also in the squad. Perera had a successful introduction to international cricket in the limited-overs leg of Sri Lanka's Australia tour.

Offspinner Sachithra Senanayake was the recipient of a central contract in 2013, and finds himself back in the squad, having last played for Sri Lanka in August 2012. Alongside Pathirana, he effectively replaces Ajantha Mendis and Akila Dananjaya, both of whom had played in the Australia limited overs matches.

The series will be Angelo Mathews' first as full time ODI captain, and will be played in Hambantota, which hosts two matches, and Pallekele. The squad may change for the third ODI, and a single Twenty20 fill follow the one-dayers.

Sri Lanka are an ordinary team now. They'll have no chance in this one-day series.

It is great to see Akila Dananjaya out, i did not see anything special of him except Mahela try to protect him, may be Sachithra Senanayake should get his place unlessl Akila earns his place,

probable Dilshan will play first match and rest, may be Kula need a break too

    Great selection !!!

Ohhh No. Upul Tharanga again??????????????? I would like to see Sanga & Kula also to be rested & It doesn't seems like Dilshan is having too many problems considering the way he bowled & batted in the 2nd Test. 1) TM Dilshan, 2) Kushal Perera 3) Dinesh Chandimal 4) Kumar Sangakkara 5)Angelo Mathews 6) Angelo Perera, 7) Jeevan Mendis / Sachith Pathirana, 8)Thisara Perera, 9) Sachithra Senanayake, 10) Nuwan Kulasekara,11) Lasith Malinga

only thing missing in this squad is a left arm fast bowler(not welagedara or udana)..and amazed by the inclution of tharanga who has got lots of chances and didn't prove his talent with the bat and he's so bad in the field...my team for the first 2 ODIs 1.Kusal 2.Dilly 3.Sanga 4.Chandimal 5.Angelo Perera 6.Mathews 7.Jeevan 8.Thisara 9.Sachithra 10.Kula 11.Mali and if the pitch suits fast bowlers rest kula and bring Shaminda Eranga...coz i would like to see 2 the battle of Mali n Shaminda for the fast bowlers place....

I have no clue what Upul Tharanga is still doing here? This is high time to get rid of him and blood a new young batsman for his place. Selectors should also consider about finding a good allrounder as a replacement for Jeevan Mendis. My XI for 1st ODI 01)Kushal Perera, 02)Dilshan, 03)Sangakkara, 04)Chandimal, 05)Mathews, 06)Thirimanne/Angelo Perera, 07)Thisara Perera, 08)Sachith Pathirana, 09)Kulasekara, 10)Shaminda Eranga, 11)Malinga

ODI may be Bangladeshis favorite but one thing they should remember is that SL is one of the best teams when it comes to shorter formats. Bangladesh seems to talk so much about a one off victory in the Asia cup. If you look at the score card of that match some of the core players of SL ODI team like Thisara, Mathews, Chandimal, Jeewan didn't play in that game. The selected squad for this series may be young, but a very talented bunch is there.

If in case Dilshan is not fit Sri Lanka should try opening the innings with Kusal Perera and Sachith Pathirana. Two Sanaths in front ha ha......... and Angelo perera at 6 and Thisara at 8 Sri Lanka is going to have 4 5 power hitters for the first time...... looking forward to enjoy!!!!!!!

Why are the selectors sticking with Upul Tharanga? What do they see in him that reflects any sort of future potential, after a long string of consistent failures??? Why do not they give a fair chance to Dilshan Munaweera, who would more likely be the opener to complement TM Dilshan going ahead? Is it me or does anybody else see a fair reason why Upul is picked?

Best ODI combination possible in this series for Bangladesh...

@Mamunur Rashid Maruf: Herath may have a very good record in tests but his ODI record is bad. Senayake according to me is a better limited overs left spinner.

  • POSTED BY on | March 19, 2013, 15:33 GMT

Kusal Janith perera will show improvement in this series.anyway good selection Senanayake in the squad.Sachith pathirana also very cabable all rounder. may all these players be more capable than Mathiwes?

  • POSTED BY on | March 19, 2013, 14:28 GMT

Herath will not be there, although this a relief for BD team, they have just missed an opportunity to prove (and also improve) their ability to face some quality spin bowling.

  • POSTED BY Tal_Botvinnik on | March 19, 2013, 12:35 GMT

Angelo Perera, Kusal Perera are the spinner's nightmare. Chandimal is the pacer's nightmare.

  • POSTED BY Baseball-Sucks on | March 19, 2013, 12:14 GMT

@SylhetiBangladeshiCricketExpert4u ; Yep, His square cuts over cover n cover point are identical to Jayasuriya, let alone the aggression n hunger to go after bowlers. Sure Gazi is a good bowler with good work ethics. But Its strange you said that Gayle struggled against Gazi coz normally left handers are the curse of left armers as the ball moves away from them.

  • POSTED BY ajithabey on | March 19, 2013, 5:29 GMT

looks a good combinatioon paper.where is dilshan munaweera .It would have been good to include him and rest TM dilshan for the first two one dayers.mathews must bat after chandimal.tirimanne and vithanage both in tests and one dayers as they are more orthodox and techincally sound than mathews.

  • POSTED BY borhans on | March 19, 2013, 3:24 GMT

without herath match could be more interesting ,more challenge for sril lanka team .Bangladesh is 70 % better team in odi than test so .srilanka if srilanka really whishing for some real challenge they will get one

  • POSTED BY on | March 19, 2013, 3:14 GMT

@Baseball-Sucks Yes I saw his Batting against Australia and was very Impressed the way he Hits the ball..not sure if he will open but would want to see Sohag Gazi vs Him..as he is an attacking lefty like chris gayle who struggled against gazi..so looking forward to that contest cheers

janaka gunarathne 676 runs Ave 84.50 43 boundaries 34 sixes & bowling 14 wickets with good economy of 3.52 in recent premier league did not deceive a chance but much better performance than pathirana. will see him in 3rd ODI squad.

  • POSTED BY sajhera on | March 18, 2013, 15:29 GMT

sadunika, do not mention abt kapu again, he got 93 international chance, no more,Feel maharoof is better option than pathirana. also Sachithra can use as a opening bowler as he performed well when he open the bowl in domestic too. Anyway good selection

  • POSTED BY on | March 18, 2013, 13:00 GMT

where is chamara kapugedera..he is a better player than sachith pathirana..last odi against bangladesh he scored a briliant 62 batted @ no 4 aftr loosing sanga, dilshan and mahela early in asia cup..he is a better player against bangladesh..

  • POSTED BY Baseball-Sucks on | March 18, 2013, 12:21 GMT

What are they talking about Dilshan's fitness? He bowled 19 tight overs today n did a wonderful job in the field ? Am I missing something here ?? It is a must that Kushal opens with Dilshan. Angelo Perera or Tharanga can fill Mahela's gap .

My XI : Dilshan, Kushal, Sanga, Thiri , Chandi, Angelo Perera / Tharanga , Mathews, Thisara Perera , Kula , Slinga , Sachithra . (so sorry BD fans, a tornado is heading your way . lol)

Slinga n Kula are gonna be handful on these bouncy tracks in Hambanthota n Pallekele.

@Third_Gear ; Funny, keep dreaming pal. By the way you will have the honor of facing the brunt of our new Sanath Jayasuriya "KUSHAL PERERA" first among other Asian teams.:)) let me give a little bit of insight. In Kushal's latest innings (FC), He scored 336 in 275 balls including 29 4's and 17 6's at a strike rate of 122.18. :))) And Its his 3rd consecutive century. So brace yourself. :)))
