Angelo Mathews will take over as Test and ODI captain from Mahela Jayawardene for the home Test series against Bangladesh. Dinesh Chandimal will be Mathews' deputy but will lead the national side in the Twenty20 format. Lasith Malinga has been named Sri Lanka's T20 vice-captain. The appointments are for a period of 11 months.

Jayawardene was expected to step down from captaincy after the tour of Australia, and Mathews was tipped to take over. Chandimal assumes a senior role in the team, having played five Tests and 50 ODIs.

The 20-man squad for the two-Test series starting on March 8 has several fresh faces and some notable absentees from the tour of Australia. Thilan Samaraweera has been dropped, together with opener Tharanga Paranavitana and wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene. Ajantha Mendis returns to the Test squad, having last played a Test in May 2011 against England.

Samaraweera has signed up with Worcestershire for the 2013 county season, but had an inconsistent 2012, a year in which he averaged 32.50. He had a poor tour of Australia, where he failed to score a half-century in six innings. Paranavitana was part of the squad on that tour but didn't play a Test, with Dimuth Karunaratne being preferred over him. Prasanna Jayawardene's Australian tour was cut short by a thumb injury, but he hasn't been picked for the Tests against Bangladesh following his recovery. Chandimal will keep wicket.

The squad features four uncapped players, and six in all who are yet to play a Test: Batsmen Ashen Silva and Kithuruwan Vithanage, seamer Dushmantha Chameera, and offspinner Tharindu Kaushal are those yet to play international cricket. Wicketkeeper-batsman Kushal Janith Perera and legspinning allrounder Jeevan Mendis have played ODI cricket for Sri Lanka but not a Test.

Kumar Sangakkara's participation in the Test series is subject to his recovery from a fractured hand, an injury he suffered on the tour of Australia. Bangladesh play one warm-up game, two Tests, three ODIs and one Twenty20 international on their almost month-long tour of Sri Lanka.

Test squad: Angelo Mathews (capt), Dinesh Chandimal (vice-capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dimuth Karunaratne, Ashen Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, Lahiru Thirimanne, Mahela Jayawardene, Kushal Janith Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Ajantha Mendis, Suraj Randiv, Nuwan Kulasekara, Shaminda Eranga, Chanaka Welegedera, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Rangana Herath, Tharindu Kaushal.

I wish the youngster Sachitra Senanayake was in the squad. He showed that he has the mental capabilities necessary for international cricket.

Posted by miles100 on (February 17, 2013, 5:42 GMT)

As a captain of younger teams, Chandimal had an extremely successful record. Eventhough international cricket is a different ball game, I strognly think Chandimal will steer the side fluently towards success. I've heard many times when Dinesh was captaining his School, unlike other captains he was more tactical and aggressive in his approach.

Posted by Ramansilva on (February 16, 2013, 14:17 GMT)

Although I am a fan of Chandimal, I think it was not a very wise decision to give him captaincy of the T20 team. He should have been nurtured in Test and One day format before pushing him to T20s. He is too good to be wasted in the cowboy cricket.

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (February 16, 2013, 2:18 GMT)

Good thing is these selectors are positive and at least trying something.By taking Ashen,Tharindu,Kithruwan and Jeewan they are showing those talented blokes that they are at least on national contention and how vital there domestic performances are.Ashen deserves a cap because a avg of 53.74 at the top of the order show how well he can handle both pace and spin.In the future line-up of aggressive stroke players we need someone conservative like ashen. Tharindu, Dhananjaya combo is going be the world's most destructive spin bowling combo.Players like Chameera,Pradeep are pacers of immense potential but the only thing need is proper guidance and i believe C Vaas is the solution.N Pradeep is most unluckiest seamer in the world because some (1 in 12) are totally unplayable and yet it doesn't yield a wicket. @caromball problem is his batting,

Posted by Vikum72 on (February 15, 2013, 22:34 GMT)

Chandimal is too good a batsman to be a keeper-batsman. Also in my opinion he should not even be in the T20 teem till he gains more experience in the other two formats.

Congrats Mathews and Chadimal for new role....good wishes from Bangladesh.

OK I agreed the first decision to appoint Angelo Mathews as captain but Dinesh Chamndimal as vice captain ???. I think Dinesh has to establish as a regular player in the side. Still he's performance not consistence. We should give some time him to settle in the side. Still this selection committee is not the right team.

#Prem2248 If I remember correctly in the said practice match Chamara Silva scored a 150 n didn't bat in the second innings. So he has a better claim for a spot in the lankan team. And if I remember correctly in Eng 1st innings both openers scored hundreds and batting last they scored nearly 400 to win the match. England openers didn't even bat in 2nd innings yet they won with the batting of Swann n Bresnon. In other words pitch is the flattest you could ever find in Sri Lanka. Batsmen's quality cannot be measured in a track like that because we are not playing all matches in SSC or in India. We need a guy for all situation. If we want a guy who bats well in those conditions there is absolutely no point dropping Thilan Samaraweera (I am certainly in favour of dropping him) because he will hit big hundreds day in and day out in those conditions. We need a batsmen who can play in Australia, South African n England and having seen Angelo Perera bat I doubt he has the required technique.

# Sujan Warnakulasooriya # Bowling attack of England comprising of Steven Finn, Graeme Swann, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, .. you rate them as a 2nd string team? 1. The getting scores of 85 & unbeaten 90 against such bowling attack, 2.Having a 1st Class batting ave of 48+ after a 50 odd 1st Class innings, 3.Winning the Best Schoolboy Batsman of the Year Award, Winning the Best Batsman's of the SAARC (PAK, Afgani, Nepal, India) Under-25 Twenty20 Cup 2011/12 Series Award where players like Nassir Jamshed, Umar Amin of PAK, almost all afgan National players took part is a work of an ordinary batter? Have any of the seniors in the squad achieved these kind feats as youngsters? With all these skills he has always been sent to bat at No 7-8 just to prevent him from performing by his club management where one of the 3 seniors is a member. Bhanuka too has been getting the same treatment from the club that he represents. Very peculiar things have been happening in SL for the last 20 ys or more.

Posted by caromball on (February 15, 2013, 10:08 GMT)

Prasanna Jayawardanas omission as the wicket keeper batsman from the side is really stupid and hilarious if the decision stays permanently. He can serve SLC for at least for 2 more years at the Test level. He is considered as the best keeper around in world cricket at the moment.Chandimal should allowed to concentrate as only a specialist batsman to establish himself without additional responsibilities given. Kusal Janith is definitely not ready as the gloveman at test levl/Kusal has to prove himself as a keeper. You can't decide it by just in a match or 2.

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 10:04 GMT)

Guys only 11 players can play in a side so give selectors a break. With regarding Sohan Boralassa there is no point playing him when we have world's best left arm spinner in Rangana Herath. Only country i know of who select more than one left arm spinner is Bangladesh. Thus till Herath retires NO BORALASSA. But there is a vacancy for a quality right arm off spinner. It could be either Randiv, Ajantha Mendis, PHT Kaushal, Dananjaya or even Senanayake. Remember our spinners always had the variety. With regarding Angeo Perera, I have seen him play so many a times. He can't play well against a quality pace attack. Just because he piled up runs against against 2nd rate club sides which does not poses good pace attack, he does not become a international player. Give him some time to prove himself against touring sides and A team tours.

Ashen Silva has good average in FC but did not agree with Kithruwan vithanage

I must think THARANGA PARANAVITHANA give a another chance, he never played with lose team like Bangladesh, he will be success, any way i hope he will be the leading runs getter in sri lanka premier league 2013

good selection. chandi and anji will prove this desition is a good one, they are very talented. the whole team are very talented, specially kusal perera. WISH UU ALL DE BEST.........

Posted by VajiraR on (February 15, 2013, 6:36 GMT)

Dropping Prasanna Jayawardana is a big mistake as without doubt he is the best wicket keeper in the world. Vice captaincy and wicket keeping will be too much forthe budding star Chandimal and might hinder his development. Retaining of Prasanna and replacing Thilan with Chandimal would have been better options.

# Pickpocket# Out of the best players produced in SL during the last 25 years only a very few were able to represent the Country. This present squad is good for T/20 but not for Test Cricket. The 3 seniors after their pathetic show in AUS haven't played single Domestic match to prove their selections. This kind of selections doesn't take place in other countries. Though the over-hyped 3 seniors have always found it difficult to bat under pressure they have been given permanent places regardless poor Test performances in the recent past. Due to the fact they occupies the main positions in the batting order, the middle order of SL namely Thilan, Angelo & Prasanna have always had to bat under lot of pressure, this has hampered their batting as well to a certain extent. KhausalSilva, AngeloPerera, RoshenSilva, SachithraSerasinghe, Niroshan Dickvella, Shehan Jaysooriya, GayanManeshan are in a position to do better and it would have been good for the Country's future as well.

it will be great to see new captain and vice captai of SL.All the best to both of them

If Sanga & Mahela not played against Bd it will be big test for Srilanka & good chance for bangladesh also. I think Bangladesh do well in the series. At least try to win one test. That will be great for Bangladesh.

Even after S'nayake was sold out for a huge some, the most of local newspapers carrying the news item related to the IPL auction, purposely omitted the name of this brilliant bowler though it was big news for other Cricket playing countries. S'nayake has been a quality bowler, ever since he started playing the Game. Not only him the other similar type of leading wicket takers of Domestic Cricket in SL;Malinda Pushpakumara, Dulanjana Mendis, Umesh Karunarathna, Even Ajantha have been getting the same treatment from the J&Ps that always give preference to henchmen not the best. I give below the 1st Cl Bow Aves & number of 1st Cl wickets taken by each player I've mentioned above in the order of their name: 20.44_310, 20.19_231, 18.09_161, 19.32_110 & 21.32_228.They are some victims of prejudicial behavior of J&Ps of recent times. These valuable players have been treated this manner just to make way for henchmen. S'nayake was a difficult opponent for B'desh in the AsiaCup last.

we need to pick guys when they r in from so where is Angelo perera ??? and who is this Dushmantha Chameera ?? why dnt thy give a chance to sachithra senanayake rather than randive anyway jayasuriya have done a very cute job here have picked 20 men with lots of young names n with the old ones so at the end of the day same team will play others can wait at the side lines :D

Posted by caromball on (February 15, 2013, 3:35 GMT)

I think selectors have made a mistake already by appointing Chandimal as their T20 Captain and Malinga as Vice Captain.Malinga has already shown his disappoinment an unhapiness about it on an telephone interview by the Hiru TV in the very next morning. He thinks SLC and the selectors has underestimated his ability and the service he has done to the Sri Lanka cricket by appointing Chandimal for the captaincy over him.I think as the next senior most player he should have given the chance to prove himself as a captain.Because he deserves that.It could have been better Chandimal has given with the Vice Captaincy for all 3 formats as he is very young player without much experience.I also don't understand why the selectors has ommited keeper Prasanna Jayawardena when he is concider as the best wicket keeper in the world at the moment.Chandfimal should be free from other resposibilitues to perform as a batter.Kusal Janith is also not the best keeper to perform at the Test level.

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 2:37 GMT)

Keeping Lahiru Thirimanne @ No :-3 is always good for Sri Lanka... While Kushal open with Chandimal in ODi n T20i, Dimuth to open vth Chandimal & wants Kushal as the wicket keeper in the future

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 1:03 GMT)

chandimal`s low average in asia is just an coincidence..he played only few matches in SL thats why..His first class average is 55 better than any batsman in SL

Posted by   on (February 15, 2013, 0:08 GMT)

Looking at the current Sri Lanka team I see there are at least three former captains playing now under Mathews. What is the record for former captains playing under a new captain, I wonder. May be Steven can answer that.

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 23:39 GMT)

Big mistake to drop Thilan. He has got few years cricket in him. Despite the fact that he failed in Australia, he had been a consitent bastman who can take a any attack whether be in SL or abroad. Besides he strengthens the middle order of SL. I am prerrty sure that had he been selected we would score many runs on flat pitches in Banagladesh and come in to form.

Posted by HambaanakaKewa on (February 14, 2013, 23:19 GMT)

We still need to find some fiery fast bowlers, I hope Chaminda Vass would accept the position offered. Honestlt, both Marvan (Rs 600,000) and Chaminda (Rs 500,000) should be paid more. They can ear much more than this if they coached other teams.

Posted by ex-Srilankan on (February 14, 2013, 22:27 GMT)

Mathews will not last very long as Test captain of Sri Lanka for political reasons. With no test cricket for the year left after this series, Mathews has been given the captaincy for an insignificant test series whilst Chandimal is being groomed for the captaincy long term. The new politically appointed selction committee is already making its mark.

Posted by Kelum_w on (February 14, 2013, 22:13 GMT)

@CricketPissek Very well said machan. Couldn't have agreed more. Chandimal over the last few years has shown immense maturity, true he got out to bad shots in the ODI and T20s but in the tests he batted really well with the tail and what I loved was how he went and talked to them at the end of every over, didn't look like he was trying to lecture them more like calmly listening and resonating some of his confidence unto them.

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 22:11 GMT)

I'm very happy to see Mathews being appointed at last! He's certainly the man for the future. Its great to see that the selectors have cast aside petty considerations and made the bold move to a very deserving and exciting player!

Posted by Ajayvs on (February 14, 2013, 20:04 GMT)

Appointing Chandimal as vice captain is a great move. Indian team can take a cue out of it. If you want to groom Virat Kohli as a successor to Dhoni, please hand over the T20 or ODI reigns to Kohli immediately.

Dimuth K and Ashen must open for tests. Dilshan or Mahela can bat at 6. T 20 also must have have the same captain and V C

Nuwan K shall not play tests. D. Prasad, Nuwan P, Dimuth K must at least for now only play tests. Ajantha M try only with one day & T 20s. O place for Suraj R. No place for Sanga in T 20.

Almost perfect selection (I would like to see the name of Anjelo Perera also). Brave decision to drop Prasanna Jayawardena & Thilan Samaraweera. It's nice to see they have omitted Tharanga Paranawithana, Suranga Lakmal, Dammika Prasad also. Why didn't they drop Suraj Randiv?

My Test 11: 1. Dilshan, 2. Dimuth, 3. Sanga / Kushal, 4. Mahela, 5. Thirimanne, 6. Mathews, 7. Chandimal, 8. Rangana Herath, 9. Shaminda Eranga, 10. Tharindu Kaushal, 11. Kula / Welagedara.

I have a feeling Chandimal will prove all his doubters wrong. I too didn't rate him very highly at first. Especially his technique against fast bowlers. But the kid has seriously worked hard. We don't need flashy players with more talent than sense as captains. We need gutsy players who are willing to work hard and be a role model. I think Chandi has proven this in small doses. Give the bugger a chance! GO LIONS! JAYA WEWA!

Posted by Sinhaya on (February 14, 2013, 16:46 GMT)

Regarding Mathews and Chandimal being appointed as captain and vice captains brings in some interesting aspects. These 2 are no doubt great buddies. Examples include how Mathews did all he can to ensure that Chandimal gets the ODI ton at Lords. I also recall how last year in the 2nd ODI in SA, Mathews strived to see Chandimal getting another ODI ton but had to end up at 95 not out. These 2 can be no doubt a good duo due to their high friendship level.

Worry is that whether they may end up putting personal milestones ahead of the team interest. My other concern about Mathews is at times he seems to show a cant care less like casual attitude. Chandimal seems the better captain of the 2 to me. I also have to say that Chandimal should never have been in the T20 squad due to his poor T20 record.

With the upcoming Bangladesh series, Chandimal should improve his average in Asia. He has a very good average in tough conditions but surprisingly not in batting friendly conditions in Asia.

Posted by ranilranathunga on (February 14, 2013, 16:46 GMT)

PRASANNA JAYAWARDENE Dropped? Are you serious? he is the best gloveman around the world and also a consistent bat. This is ridiculous. IT is SANGA and MAHELA who should be rested.

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 16:39 GMT)

That's very much logical. I wish both the captains a real good go for the rest of their career. Sri Lankan cricket seems to be moving in the right direction. Sound and rational decisions are being made which most probably will result in favor of Sri Lankan cricket.Besides, bringing in new players against a comparatively weaker side is again a good decision which will boost up the confidence level of the newly recruited ones and will surely enrich their experience at international level.

Mathews was no surprise but how Chandimal became the T20 captain beats me. He has done nothing in this format is not a regular member of the team by any stretch of imagination. Agree about Tharanga being given another go in tests.

I wish both captains. This will be a new chapter of Sri Lanka cricket. These youngsters have lot of talents. Seniors should play around them.. Giving captaincy for chandimal is a future investment. We don't need a specialized captain for t20s. If mathews can bring Sri Lanka to among best three test teams it will be the achievement for next year..

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 15:38 GMT)

Mathews should be given the captaincy of all three formats, he'll be a Sanga n Mahela's type of captain..but Chandimal doesn't even deserve a place in the T20 side.

Posted by cricket12namal on (February 14, 2013, 15:01 GMT)

most cricket lovers dont agree about t20 too,i think mathews for all formats..why thisara is not here ?? Why kushal is here ?? Kushal is not a test player..mahela,sanga,dilshan should be rested,,why dont give a chance for upul tharanga to play test cricket ?? Upul is the leading run getter so far this season, just scored a unbeaten double century...thisara,upul,anjelo perera should be selected over ashen,kithruwan,kushal..and these 3 should be in 15 squad.

Let's see how it goes with Chandimal... He is a great competitor... Dawn of a new era... Well done! Hopefully these new members will NOT postpone or cancel the Test matches... We must be ashamed of our Test performances, but we fought, we fought as much as we could...

Thats a good bold decision by the SL selectors. It is essential that SL build a young team right now as Sanga, Mahela, Dilshanvand Herath are all above 34 years of age and we cannot expect them to play forever. As an Indian I expect our selectors to do something similiar and build a strong team that can perform anywhere in the world. Anyway I wish SL cricket good luck for their plans. Cheers :-)

congrats all 3. Really love to hear again an old Anandian become Sri Lanka T20 Captain. But why appoint him before he get used to format .He is not accepted as a front line T20 hitter as yet (proven at IPL '13 sale). It is better first him to give opportunity to establish as a batter .Are they trying to do the same thing did for Kandambi??also good to have ajantha back in test team.also some young heads in soon against b'desh ...let mahela, rangana, dilly also rested n play with new heads.

Good decision exceptdecision about t20 captaincy. Chandimal shouldn't be the captain or at least a player of t20 squad.Captaincy should be given to kule, mathews, malinga, kusal janith or thisara.kusal and mathews are the ideal, not chandimal.

SL selectors have shown wisdom in their choice of Matthews as captain, its is timely as well as prudent. Matthews for some time has been on the cusp of great things and has the talent to turn into an excellent player for SL. Captaincy is always a bit of a double edged sword and can often make or break an otherwise good player. Let us hope the latter is the case here. If he can perform well here, it is not only a boon for SL but for world cricket as well. Good luck to you, sir!

I think its a great decision thus far by Sri Lankan Selectors, only thing I would have done different is add angelo perera, thissara perera and more promising fast bowlers (not fast medium) like Chaturanga Kumara. Also in T20s , I think Thissara could have been entrusted with the T20 vice-captaincy. @venkatesh018, I think the selectors are making up for something the selectors of the past haven't done: try and bring promising youngsters in during low-key seires to gain experience in the national setup to groom the next generation of players and not always continuously bank on senior stars. I'm not doubting Prasannas ability, and think he should still be in th selectors plans, but there comes a time when the team needs to move on

Handing over the world's no1 T20 team to a someone yet to earn a proper place in the team.I thought they assigned Mathews as the T20 leader after the WC. Why cant they just hand it over completely to Mathews and give him a chance. He did really well in the last T20 series against AUS both as a player and a captain.

No disrespect to Chandimal but that kid need to grow up and this sort of pressure may ruin his career. And its a pity some short sighted people think captaining a school team in SL is the same as leading a national team a international level. One last thing - Why the hell keep ignoring Upul Tharanga ? Why cant we just give him a chance at test team ?

Glad to see Ajantha Mendis being brought back. Finally getting the chance he had been deserved. Hopefully he stays injury free. Sad to see Thilan being dropped but he got his big chance in Australia & failed. Surprised that Prasanna J is dropped. I'm guessing his recovery is not 100% yet, because no doubting his keeping talent & his batting isn't bad either. Chandimal better prove himself in the longer formats because I personally don't think he's proven himself even to be in the T20 side. My test team: Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara, Ajantha Mendis, Shaminda Eranga/Chanaka Welegedera Good luck Lions!

i would have liked if they included the following players who has extremely potential were included in the squad who are namely 1/Angelo Perera 2/Ashan Priyanjan 3/Niroshan Dickwella. i reckon they would be the players to watch in the next couple of years. what we lack is depth in our fast & slow bowling since i cannot see anyone consistently performing. but the batting looks well sorted. now we need to unearth and unleash a few real fast bowlers and spinners who could pick wickets on a regular basis. this is the area we are lacking in severely...

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 11:46 GMT)

still not focus to find quickest face bowler for various attacked and also good opening batsmen

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 11:46 GMT)

Congrats to Angelo. Wish you all the very best in the future. May God shower all His graces upon you and the team to bring glory and honour to our country Mother Lanka. Same goes to Dinesh Chandimal who has been named captain of the T20. Show your abilities young men and make Sri Lanka the NO1 in cricket.

Good Selection giving youngsters an exposure to the international Arena... But Chandimal as the captain of T20...? He has lot to prove in that form... Sl selectors always do something stupid @ the end.....

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 11:31 GMT)

angelo perera can`t play fast bowlers even at domestic agaist only spinners

Posted by Dhushan on (February 14, 2013, 11:29 GMT)

Chandimal to lead the T20 side? He's not even proven his place in the team yet. Oh wait, now that he's captain he's got no problem. Haiyooooo! Mathews should have been given all three formats. No argument about the other selections and omissions though.

Posted by Prabhash1985 on (February 14, 2013, 11:26 GMT)

Wow! Awesome!! This was the decision pending for a long time... But, I still see the need for more quick bowlers... We need to give chances to the younger players who are around 19 years of age, and bowl really faster... They will learn... Anyway, Samaraweera and all those senior players did a great job for the country, and should be appreciated for their great talent, commitment... But, we need to move on to the next generation... We cannot depend on them forever... Please give more opportunities for young fast bowlers... And, prepare bouncy pitches all around the country... We (SL players) need to learn how to play against quick attack from school days, and we (SL players) need to get the benefit from the bouncy pitches... Otherwise, we will not win in Test matches outside sub continent.

Great to see Chandimal given a chance. He's our best Under-25 batsman..He's been in the International circuit for 3 years, that is enough experience.. Hopefully we'll see Angelo Perera and Niroshan Dickwella in the ODI and T20 squads..Good to see Tharindu Kaushal in the Test squad..

Kithruwan is good, but I think Bhanuka should hv selected over him

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (February 14, 2013, 11:01 GMT)

@Posted by CRLShamalka ; Exactly, The only way to keep Chandimal in the T20 squad is to give him the captaincy n selectors have done it. Chandimal is an awesome Test n ODI batsman (and he is the future), But not T20. That's why he didn't play even a single game during the T20 WC. And he is the captain :)))) Why do we need Chandimal in T20 when we have Kushal Perera ?

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 10:43 GMT)

Wish you all the best Ashen and Dushmantha..You rock maristonians

Posted by trav696 on (February 14, 2013, 10:34 GMT)

That is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. It is an insult to Mathews who easily deserves to be captain in all 3 formats of the game. Chandimal being captain of the t20 unit is a joke. He is a very good player, but is inexperienced and doesn't fit the role as captain of T20. If he was captain of the Test side and Mathews was captain of the ODI and T20, that would make more sense. I honestly don't know what the selectors were thinking taking such a gamble with Chandimal as captain. We already saw in the 2 T20 matches against Aus recently how Mathew's captaincy was put to the test. He prevailed and made really good decisions on the field. Chandimal isn't capable of that and the captaincy looks like it benefits Mathews as well. Don't make the mistake of giving the captaincy to Chandimal who isn't mature enough. Not a good move for the No. 1 team in the world in T20...

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 10:28 GMT)

Stupid, Stupid Decision by the selectors. i cant beleive that Mathews is not leadiing the team in both ODIs & T20s.. hes by far one of the best T20 players in the world & Chandimal has not even proven himself in the T20 format..!

Posted by Fahii on (February 14, 2013, 10:28 GMT)

SL should have rested their top class batsmen like K Sangakkara, M Jayawardene,T Dilshan.........but now it will be a boring series, gona be one sided.

Posted by MelbourneMiracle on (February 14, 2013, 10:22 GMT)

The only way you could keep Chandimal in the T20 team is by giving him the captaincy and that is exactly what the selection panel has done. Coz no way on earth he can be in the t20 team as a batsman or as a wicket keeper batsman when there's Kushal Janith playing. Smart move by Chandimal backers!

Posted by Thenurarocks on (February 14, 2013, 10:15 GMT)

its nice to see chandimal getting a senior role

Posted by colombo_SL on (February 14, 2013, 10:06 GMT)

Chandimal as the captain of T20? I can't understand the logic behind it. Sorry to say that, i would not include Chandimal even in my dream T20 team for 2014 WC. Like to know what others think about this selection. Except this decision, other selections are ok.

Posted by buncers on (February 14, 2013, 9:58 GMT)

Why is Thissara not in the squad? Doesn't make any sense. Restricting him to just odis and t20 does not help develop his game.

I don't think Chandi is ready for the t20 captaincy. This is a format we are no 1 in the world - are the selectors trying to throw that away? Angelo should captain t20 as well, or give it to Nuwan.

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 9:51 GMT)

Best of luck...i guess this pair will Rock..

Posted by venkatesh018 on (February 14, 2013, 9:49 GMT)

Kushal Perea, the new keeper seems to be the "flavour of the month". Everybody seem to be in awe of his batting abilities. But should that mean the dropping of Prasanna Jayawardane, the best gloveman in the world and also consistent with the bat. The new set of SL selectors have made a confusing start to their tenure.

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 9:44 GMT)

we can't have dilsha / mahela / sanga playing every game here on. play only 2 at a given time which will provide more space for a youngster to blossm

Posted by SLCK on (February 14, 2013, 9:44 GMT)

This will be good from youth prospective. All the best..

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 9:44 GMT)

How Chandimal became the T20 captain, a format he is yet to master at the expense of Matthews who is arguably most comfortable in the shortest format is a bit dumbfounding. There will be a bit of pressure on Chandimal as he is not captaining any ordinary team this is the world's #1 T20 outfit and with it comes a large amount of expectation.

Posted by DiamondSoul on (February 14, 2013, 9:42 GMT)

@Winchesters: buddy Chameera can consistantly bowl at 139 kmph. (Evidence- when he played for NN in slpl)He is spirited and has got a good bowling's no matter wht average he has got he has talent for a sri lankan pacy of his age.

I wish Mathews and Chandi to have a great seson with captaincy. chandimal is not in the best of t20 form that he used to a good move from the selectors because then the young captain can mature for a better role.

I wish if there had been some one like angelo perera.Because he had been in such an devastating form.if he was given a chance in these tests we could test hw better he can be in the middle orders in non pressure situations.then we could introduce him into limited arena.because he is someone with rare talent Bt i guess the bowling attack has to be much stronger. If they could include smone like saliya saman it'd have been surely Eranga must play the key role

Posted by sonu77 on (February 14, 2013, 9:39 GMT)

I think Anji's injury woes are the main reason for this split captaincy. But I don't think Chandimal is mature enough to lead world's no.1 t20 team.

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 9:19 GMT)

Angelo is going to play under Chandimal or he is going to be left out from 20-20 cricket.... ridiculous decision by the selection committee...and what is the purpose of appoint Malinga as deputy to Chandimal..This is going to be a insult for such a greatr player....If Chandimal is captain in 20-20 Thirimanne/Thisara or Kusal janith should have been vice captain....further, what has this Dushyantha Chameera proved in the domestic cricket to be selected...Where the hell this young dynamic Angelo Perera and young outstanding seamer Saliya Saman Jeewantha who claimed 8 wickets in an innings against SSC with a hattric against 3 test players(Dimuth,Kaushal,Kandambi)...

Posted by MDCP on (February 14, 2013, 9:08 GMT)

Simply dont agree with Dinesh Chandimal becoming the t20 captain. his strike rate is less than 100 in that format which is below average!!! he has simply struggled in t20s!!! simply no logic in him becoming the t20 captain. why not just let Mathews continue as t20 captain as well. How did Dushmantha Chameera make it to this squad with only 2 wickets in this season so far in 4 innings?? Ashen Silva hasnt even scored a 50 this season so far. Where is ANGELO PERERA?? He has scored 2 hundreds and 1 fifty in 3 innings!!! Bad miss dear SELECTORS!!!

Posted by priceless1 on (February 14, 2013, 9:04 GMT)

agreed with Udendra, Chandimal has done nothing in the T20's , in-fact he should have been dropped form the T20 side and given to some other un capped players

Posted by Winchesters on (February 14, 2013, 8:56 GMT)

There are few positives and well as negatives here..Good to see tharindu kaushal in the squad. well as kiithruwan n ashen. but why include PVD Chameera?? he has only played 4 first class matches and 5 list A matches and not has taken 6 wickets in both categories. Why there's no place to sohan boralassa, the left arm spinner in here? He is the leading wicket taker in the domestic season for couple of years now. And where is Anjelo Perera?? he also scoring very heavily for the last 2years or so but still can't find a place in the national side. Both of them should be in this Squad..

Posted by wendall on (February 14, 2013, 8:49 GMT)

Posted by Srian Obeyesekere -This decision by Sanath & co-selectors is one of the best in so many decades following somewhat in the Aussie policy. Mathews is there for the two topmost formats. Giving Chndimal the T-20 captaincy is a very good grooming move to mature to be Sri Lanka's torch bearer in all three formats. Malinga and Nuwan are not real potentials in this scenario.

Posted by Sanga2014 on (February 14, 2013, 8:48 GMT)

My |X 1.Dilshan 2.Dimuth 3.Sanga/Thirimanne 4.Chandimal 5.Mahela 6.Mathews 7.Kushal(wk) 8.A Mendis/ T Kushal 9.Herath 10.Kulasekara 11.Eranga

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 8:37 GMT)

This Bangladesh team not going to be easy looks like.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (February 14, 2013, 8:37 GMT)

By the way, I'm not too sure about Chandimal's appointment. He hasn't proved himself in T20's. And whats the rush ? let the guy play a few more years n get more experience. Why do we have to follow SA or AUS n have separate captains ? If Mathews is up for all 3 formats, why not give it to him ? If they insist on separate captains, what's wrong with Kulasekara, Malinga or even Thisara Perera ?? I see no logic behind the this appointment of Chandimal.

Posted by PadMarley on (February 14, 2013, 8:34 GMT)

Mathews could lead all three formats..... May be Chandimal is just an experiment in the T20. So far, he has shown character in challenging situations; they probably wanna test his potential, why not!!. But I wont mind him being the keeper for a while, it will certainly make his maturity cycle faster in terms of reading different pitches and seeing how the ball moves and carry in different conditions. That definitely helps a batsmen in grooming stage. I'm sure it helped Sanga, Gilly and Dhoni too. As long as he does not make a big blunder behind the sticks, let him keep. We should not judge Kushal, just by one series; youngsters need to prove themselves consistently to be given additional responsibility.

Posted by deloyar on (February 14, 2013, 8:28 GMT)

Best replacement but ......becoz Mahela has proved but Mathews have to prove!!! Nevertheless It is a good move for Srilanka. Best of Luck, Mathews!!

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (February 14, 2013, 8:24 GMT)

While wishing our newly appointed young skipper Mathews all the best, I must say a few words about our former skippy* and legendary batsman Mahela Jayawardene. We can not thank you enough for the service u've given for SL cricket. You've been the backbone of SL cricket for years. You may have given up the captaincy, But we wanna see you there on the field for a few more years. Having said that WHERE THE HELL IS ANGELO PERERA ?

Posted by CRIC89 on (February 14, 2013, 8:14 GMT)

If Chandimal and Malinga are the captain and the vice captain how on earth, a test & ODI captain play under them. Ridiculous decision by selectors. If Mathews is the man for the future he should be given the chance to captain in every format. Then some other youngster can groom under him as vice captain, probably Chandimal.

Posted by Udendra on (February 14, 2013, 8:13 GMT)

T20 captaincy to Chandimal is absurd. It should have gone to Thisara Perera or Malinga.

Posted by yorkslanka on (February 14, 2013, 8:13 GMT)

Forgot to say I don't think malinga is right mango be vc in t20.mathews should have captained there also with chandimal as vc

Posted by yorkslanka on (February 14, 2013, 8:09 GMT)

Good decision by Sanath & co..this partnership must be given time to succeed. We should not take Bangladesh too lightly as they have some good players..I am sure the three past captains in he team will help Mathews also.

Posted by SL_Boy on (February 14, 2013, 8:06 GMT)

Where is Angelo Perera, Chandimal T20 not sure ...

Posted by pradeep_dealwis on (February 14, 2013, 8:04 GMT)

Definitely Mattews is the best man for the job, but i think he should have got all 3 formats. Chandimal is not mature enough to captain any side right now, and he needs to play freely. And i don't see Malinga is suitable for a leadership role either. Maybe the selectors are trying to groom a different team for the 3 formats. Only explanation there! I also think long-term Chandimal should go in as a pure batsman, and let Perera keep. Perera is a better keeper and Chandimal is too much of a batting talent to waste his time on keeping. But short-term i think this is OK. Good to see new faces as well!

Posted by anver777 on (February 14, 2013, 8:04 GMT)

A real surprise for Chandimal fans, as he was always in & out of T20 team for SL.... Good luck for the new squad !!!!!

Much anticipated decision finally out in the open, happy for the skippers. Let's hope our boys take it to the next level. @George George Sebastian, I'm happy and proud you compared our Kula with the greats Imran Khan and Wasim Akram but Kula gotta go a much much longer journey to be compared with those Pakistani greats.

Posted by jayaboy on (February 14, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

even kapugeadara is a better player than chandimal for the t20 it's a bad decision to appoint chandi as the t20 captain. There's no place in the side for Thilan Samaraweera in tests.Hopefully this will not be a full stop for his cricketing career.

Posted by ----LoveTheWayLionsPlay--- on (February 14, 2013, 7:41 GMT)

My choice is Mathews for Test & T20, Chandimal for ODI's.Chandimal's record in t20's still not up to the mark.

i think Nuwan should have given a run in T20 captancy.. he such a thinking cricketer.. like "wasim akram" or "imran Khan" kind of cricketer.

Posted by Karnain on (February 14, 2013, 7:29 GMT)

One simple question - Are these captains have a permanent place in the respective formats they are captaining? (i.e:- Mathews in Tests & Chandimal in T20s)

At last took fine decision for Sri Lankan Cricket..

Posted by   on (February 14, 2013, 7:27 GMT)

it is a good strategy to groom young captains. Chandimal is definitely one of Sri Lanka's future skipper.. teams like Pak and Ind must also think about this.. good luck Mathews and chandimal.. looking forward to your team touring Pakistan in near future...
