Kumar Sangakkara has been named in the squad for the Emerging XI that will play a three-day warm up match in Matara against Bangladesh, while offspinner Akila Dananjaya misses out due to injury.

"I've started batting in the nets this week and have had a good week of practice, so the match against Bangladesh is a good opportunity to get some match practice," Sangakkara said. "As long as I pull through ok, I will play in the Galle Test."

Sangakkara has not played competitive cricket since fracturing his index finger during the Boxing Day Test. He is the only player above 23 in the side captained by middle-order batsman Angelo Perera.

Offspinner Dananjaya had been named in the preliminary squad for the match, but has been left out after straining his finger while taking a return catch in the latest round of first-class cricket. He will be rested for one to two weeks, but is likely to be available for the limited-overs leg of the Bangladesh tour. Allrounder Ramith Rambukwella takes his place in the Emerging XI squad.

Batsmen Ashen Silva and Kithuruwan Vithanage, who are also in the Test squad, have also been included for the fixture, but 19-year-old offspinner Tharindu Kaushal misses out, and may instead be given a Test debut in the two-Test series. Kaushal is the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing first-class tournament, having bagged 31 wickets at 13.22, with four five-wicket hauls in four matches. He had also been named in the Test squad for the home series against New Zealand in November, before he'd played any first-class or List A cricket, but didn't get a match in the series.

The Emerging XI is coached by former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana.

16-man squad: Angelo Perera (capt), Kithuruwan Vithanage (vice capt), Kumar Sangakkara, Ashen Silva, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Udara Jayasundera, Shehan Jayasuriya, Ashan Priyanjana, Ishan Jayaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Kasun Madushanka, Chaturanga de Silva, Dulanjana Mendis, Ramith Rambukwella, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Gamage,

Welcome Back Real Legend..............

Posted by   on (March 2, 2013, 13:45 GMT)

Ramith Rambukwella....??????? For what? Five wicket haul or a double century made in domestic matches? I think Mr.Sanath Jayasuriya has made another blunder by making his parliament friend happy with the inclusion of this incapable player. Mr. Jayasuriya,,,This time you are going to destroy Sri Lanka cricket.

Posted by sampi72 on (March 2, 2013, 8:14 GMT)

Ramith Rambukwella......LOL...Mr SJ can you justify this selection to the media....Is he a better batsman than Rumesh Buddika, Ian Danials, Bhanuka Rajapkse and Roshen Silva...and is he a good alrounder than Janka Gunarathne,Chathuranga umara,Sachithra serasinghe,TN Sampath,Kaushal Lokuarachchi and Sachithra Senanayake......I think he need just one double hundred in domestic cricket to be named as Sri Lankan International.....god bless to Sri Lankan cricket..

Kumar is the best example that if you really want to achieve something, with enormous courage, you can achieve it, regardless of what talent you have... Talent is something hidden. You never know. But, he really worked hard to correct his mistakes. Regarding his captaincy, I compared Mahela with him. I thought Sanga was too defensive in the world cup final. But, now I think he was right. He knew one thing .That is, if you block the boundaries of Indian batsmen, they are going to give chances. Unfortunately, he couldn't bring us the world cup. But, he is more or less the same as Jayawardhena, Arjuna... It just didn't happen. So, having such a great person in our country and team is not only a pride, but also a strength. So, until it gets settled, I wish he play for our country. And hopefully they join the Cricket board after they retire. At least 1 year left for them.

@Posted by lukecannon ; Look bro, Why should he go away if he still performs exceptionally well ? He is a class act. I know what you are saying that we should bring up young talents. I think they are doing it right now, aren't they ? And I think its essential for seniors to be in the playing XI at least 1 or 2 years until Mathews, Chandi, Thiri, Kushal etc get their acts together. By the way we are so damn lucky to have a player like Sanga. He did a lot to promote SL Cricket. He is A Legend. peace out!

Go away Sangakkara. Sri Lanka unearthed tremendous talents that were wasted on the bench last time you got injured. Take your advice and drop yourself just like you dropped Sanath from the team while you were captain. All Sanga wants is to retain his test ranking from Amla. Period.

Sanga can now surpass Lara n set a new world record of most double hundreds during this series. He scored 2 190's back to back against Pakistan and missed out 200 on both occasions. If he could do it against PAK bowlers like Ajmal, I wonder what he would do to BD bowlers. lol.

I'm wondering why Kaushal Silva (from SSC) is omitted from either of the squads. He has played over 100 matches, scored over 7000 runs with and average of 45 (20 hundreds) and rightfully deserves to be included over most of these players in this list. He's one of the most experienced wicket keepers in the country as well.

Nice chance for him to boost his average!

@warm_coffe ... seems u hv less idea abt cricket. a team who r the asiacup2012 finalist. who recently beat 2012 20wolrdcup chammp in odi. and u telling srilanka to beat them liek this. seems u r totally uneducated abt cricket . mannn time changed now Bangladesh is good side.

Just wait until ramith rabukwalla scores his double hundred in a first class match, after that he will be an automatic choice for the national team. I am afraid that the selectors are going to pick him for the A team tours as well. What a waste of spot.

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 23:21 GMT)

Its good to see Sanga back in action. He is one of my favourite players of all time.He is one of the most dedicated, hardworking and well mannered cricketer of the modern era.As a Bangla fan, I would want him to struggle in this series. Its not going to be easy for us especially in test series. But we will be competitive and surely going to win one day series. So lankans be ready to get nailed down by the tigers. ROAR!!!!!

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 17:48 GMT)

Doesn't matter how good of a player you are,you need to feel bat and ball when you start an inning. You need to hit a lot of balls in the nets and keep doing it for a long period of time. That's how you can build your match mood and the confidence especially when you haven't played any cricket for a while.I think that's the case with sanga as well.

Posted by Karnain on (February 28, 2013, 17:35 GMT)

Let's include another emerging player called Rangana Herath to this squad, it will make sure Bangladesh batsmen will not get enough batting practice. Finally Angelo Perera get the node from selectors. What about Nuwan Pradeep?

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 16:50 GMT)

just w8 ...... @Warm_Coffee

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 16:37 GMT)

@Sajhera why should an opening batsman with an average of 19 be playing in a test?

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 16:26 GMT)

well this is a good decition by sri lankans to give chance for younger players.but its shame to see political involve to the game.atleast give a chance to someone like sachithra serasinghe to perform

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 16:14 GMT)

agree with sajhera ramith rabukwalla shouldn't be selected. but it is good to see few youg guyz coming through.

Posted by jonthanf on (February 28, 2013, 15:51 GMT)

where the hell is Sachith Pathirana? why do u have to play Sangakkara in Emerging players team?why cant he play club cricket over the weekend to get batting practice he is depriving a deserved player an opportunity...Ashan Priyanjan and Angelo Perera should be in the test squad instead of Thilan and Sanga....ideally Dilshan should be rested as well. my line up is pure & simple. 1/Dimuth K 2/Ashan P 3/Lahiru T 4/Jeevan M 5/Kithruwan V 6/Angelo M 7/Dinesh C 8/Angelo P 9/Shaminda E 10/ Tharindu K 11/Ajantha M

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 15:27 GMT)

Worth mentioning that bangladesh and pakistan are Sanga's favourite opposition. I think if i remember correct he scored 200 in consecutive matches against bangla and scored 190 in consecutive matches against pak. Good chance for sanga to evaluate his fitness.

Posted by Warm_Coffee on (February 28, 2013, 15:03 GMT)

What we expect from Sri Lanka and anything less is an embarrassment. 2-0 win all by an innings, 3-0 ODI series win all by 5 or more wickets with more than 5 overs to spare or by 50+ runs plus the 1 off T20 win.

Posted by sajhera on (February 28, 2013, 15:03 GMT)

I cant belive why Ramith Rambukwella in the squad. Its politics its a shame sanath Aiya. hope you have a strong backbone. please analyse statics of SL domestic from cricinfo site and give a chance to inform young player

Posted by FastTrack_Bullies on (February 28, 2013, 14:20 GMT)

sanga in emerging squad, SL crickets and its fans (see their comments) are genuinely funny :) keep it up guys lol

Posted by TheRisingTeam on (February 28, 2013, 13:59 GMT)

Who is in the Sri Lanka squad? the 'official' squad.

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 13:46 GMT)

Herath's capabilities we all know. So,I was waiting to see what Tharindu Kaushal can do. Well..! At least we can see some positives in our emerging young talent.

Posted by SL_rockz on (February 28, 2013, 13:44 GMT)

Oh!!! Sanga is playing in the tour....Bad news for BD's.... It is not like saying when sakib misses tour for BD...It is sangakkara who is all time 6th best test player(even sachin is not in top 20) joining SL squad...horrible nightmares for BD . Come on sanga you should go again for 900+ points..You can do it..I m looking very eagerly for that..good luck ..

Posted by WPDDESILVA on (February 28, 2013, 13:23 GMT)

If i were the Bangladesh Captain I'd say to my fast bowlers "Boyz, Target that finger cos i don't want Sanga in that 1st Test" - Ha Ha...Welcome back Sanga.

Posted by Third_Gear on (February 28, 2013, 12:30 GMT)

Sinhya@ Totally agreed with you. Otherwise great chance of loosing the series in the same manner how SL had lost in last AUS series. current BD team has the capacity of destroying SL team any time at any format. Good Luck.

Posted by SyedAreYouDumb on (February 28, 2013, 12:19 GMT)

If Bangladesh lose to this team, thats embarrassing but nice way of exposing future players. Bravo SL , nice idea.

Posted by Ajmal_Chucker on (February 28, 2013, 11:36 GMT)

So, apart from Sanga, these are the future Sri Lankan players interesting. But at least the positive thing is that Sri Lanka are giving the youngsters the opportunity to play for national team whereas teams like India and Pakistan still using their very old guys cause their youngsters just don't have any talent their seniors have and and afraid they will lose well done Sri Lanka.

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 11:10 GMT)

Oh the ministers son Ramith gets a place by hook or by crook. Political interference agin. I thought Sanath will have none of it. Ranjan Rodrigo

Posted by   on (February 28, 2013, 11:07 GMT)

can't we give a chance to a real "Emerging" player? Sangakkara has nothing to emerge now.

Posted by satishchandar on (February 28, 2013, 11:04 GMT)

Sanga in Emerging squad? Initially i had a good laugh on it but he is coming from a very long injury layoff and should have match practice before he actually steps on to the stage. Pretty good decision to include him especially in the absence of Mahela.

Posted by MelbourneMiracle on (February 28, 2013, 10:58 GMT)

Sanga was emerging in 90's...hehehe...lol

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (February 28, 2013, 10:52 GMT)

Sanga can get some practice, Kaushal would become deadlier in tests and give a chance for others to pick up wickets. He (sanga) can be of great help to all the young batsmen technically and temperament-wise. Kasun Madushanka is a our "philander" or "mcgrath" or "asif"

Posted by Htc-Baseball on (February 28, 2013, 10:47 GMT)

Great news, now sangakkara's inclusion will make us favourites for this tour game
