Bangladesh in Sri Lanka 2012-13 March 6, 2013

Bangladesh batting spots up for grabs

  shares 31

A gaping hole in the batting order stares at Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim, coach Shane Jurgensen and on-tour selector Habibul Bashar when they decide the final eleven of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Of the four batting changes Bangladesh have to make - Shakib Al Hasan, Nazimuddin, Shahriar Nafees and Naeem Islam are all not in the squad - two places are still up for grabs two days ahead of the Galle Test.

Jahurul Islam and Anamul Haque were not among the runs in the three-day match against a Sri Lanka Development Emerging Team.

Last month, Akram Khan had mentioned the possibility of "one debutant" in the Test series, and it was assumed to be Anamul, a 20-year-old opening batsman who has been impressive in Under-19 and first-class cricket in the last three seasons.

Anamul's inadequate footwork has been a cause of concern, even though he has scored plenty of limited-overs runs recently. What has also hurt his case is the failure in the three-dayer, the only first-class innings before the Tests, which means his debut in whites could be delayed.

Jahurul was Anamul's opening partner in the three-dayer and he looked more assured of the two. He played three Tests in 2010, after which this could be his first chance. Domestic runs for Rajshahi Division and lately for North Zone and Duronto Rajshahi have brought him back into contention. Jahurul's compact defense makes him the sort of batsman Tamim Iqbal has often missed at the other end, but the jury is still out on his place.

Jurgensen said he was impressed with what he saw of Jahurul on the third morning. "He looked good until he got a good ball," he said. "I think we still have some thinking to do before we make the selection."

Among the four who have to be replaced, Shakib is the biggest loss while those who take the place of the others could be given a longer run to establish themselves. Though Naeem made runs against West Indies, Nafees didn't make any big scores in the series and Nazimuddin has been in poor form for most of the season.

Bashar was happy to see Mohammad Ashraful and Mominul Haque among the runs in the practice match, but he is still unsure who would open with Tamim or bat at No. 3. "We have a few places up for grabs, but we are happy that two of them got runs," Bashar said. "We are still thinking about the other opener's place, but we know what we want. And the opening position and the No. 3 hasn't been taken by someone regularly, so I think we have the options this time.

"Both have spent enough time in the middle to get a feel of the weather here, as well as the wickets. The bowling attack will be vastly different, but I would still think scoring 102 or 99 is crucial ahead of a Test series."

Ashraful, a last-minute inclusion to replace Nafees, made 102 in Matara batting at No. 3 and has indicated that he would like to continue in this position. He is a natural stroke-player, though, and might have to curb his shot-making if he wants to play at No. 3.

The selectors initially picked Mominul to fill Shakib's position in the middle-order and that is likely to be a straight swap in the Test team as well. Mominul, a left-hand batsman, played the ODIs against West Indies and turned in a crucial performance in the series-deciding fifth game. His 99 in the three-dayer came at a brisk pace which impressed the selectors, although there were periods at the end of sessions when he lost his rhythm trying to find boundaries.

There is likely to be a reshuffling in the batting line-up, with captain Mushfiqur Rahim coming up the order, though he is the wicketkeeper and his workload will be taken into account. It wouldn't be surprising if Mahmudullah gets a promotion after showing confidence and good form against West Indies. Nasir Hossain is another slight worry for the team, given his lack of runs recently.

Bashar's other worry is the pace attack. Rubel Hossain went through 19 overs on the first day in Matara but Abul Hasan struggled to stay on the field after bowling six overs as he suffered from dehydration. "I think we need another practice match to test our pace bowlers," he said. "We have Shahadat Hossain as back-up so we are thinking of a right combination."

Abul does not have a bright record in bowling, but neither do Shahadat, Rubel or Robiul. In that case, his batting and that debut century might make the difference.

  • ThuhinTauhid on March 7, 2013, 9:04 GMT

I think Mominul deserve chance to play in First Test against SL with Ashraful... And Abul hasan, who can bat also, should be among the best eleven...

  • on March 7, 2013, 8:22 GMT

Marshall Ayub should play instead of Ash

  • on March 7, 2013, 5:55 GMT

without Shakib our bowling attack iz too weak N abul hasan iz not a good option we should give a chance to shahdat Hossain ... Btw Ash should bat at no. 3 N Mushi in 4 mominul at 5 N Nasir 6,Mahmudullah at 7 ... Anamul N Mominul should debut in the same match

  • bootlicker on March 7, 2013, 5:05 GMT

As far as the SL is concerned the skipper is new the deputy is new, no Mahela and Sanga is doubtful but still I think SL is a quality team. They have ample of new talents in contrast to BD. Having said so this is a rare chance for BD to make a landmark. Wish BD all the best !!!

A sub-standard team, which Sri Lanka will clinically whitewash. No talent in the country at all Ashraful is picked again LOL.

  • Jadejafan on March 6, 2013, 23:49 GMT

Good luck BD from India. At least its easy to pronounce your names unlike those Lankans :)

none of them are out of form. isam is over reacting. nasir, anamul, jahurul all performed in BPL, they will all come good in main matches.

  • on March 6, 2013, 19:44 GMT

Marshal Aub should play instead of Nasir (he is out if firm). BCB must open a pace bowling academy, where they should pick up at least 50 young bowlers (u'16, u'17) from root level. and they will provide them proper food, gym, technical support and good coach.they will play for U'17 then U'19, A' team then for the national side.

  • on March 6, 2013, 19:31 GMT

Bangladesh cricket Bord must open a pace bowler's academy.they should pick up pacers from under 17 level. give them proper food, gym, and a few good bowling coach. shame on us after 12 years of getting test status, still we do not have any pace bowling foundation and we r crying for real pace bowlers.

  • Captainman on March 6, 2013, 19:14 GMT

I really hope Mushfiq set attacking fields rather than being defensive otherwise Sri Lanka will just post big against our ordinary bowling attack.

  • Albert_cambell on March 6, 2013, 19:01 GMT

I hope our tigers dont end up sleeping on the field.

  • on March 6, 2013, 18:53 GMT

in srilanka no need to play 2 seam bowler. because at this time all are pacer on off form. we really miss taskin, nazmul and mashrafi. so, my opinion only rubel will part of first test as a pacer. but should be put strong spin attack. sohag, sunny and some part timer like-mahmudullah(ob), marshall(lb), mominul(sla), ashraful(ob/lb) etc. my option is-- tamim, jahurul, anamul/ashraful, marshall, mushfiq, nasir, Mahmud, mominul, sohag, elias, rubel.....

  • Mad_for_Shakib on March 6, 2013, 18:09 GMT

    I dont think any debut needs there but 1 has 2 take coz so many new man in sqd 11 should b 1.Tamim 2.Jahurul 3.Ash 4.Mahmud 5.Mimi 6.Musfik 7.Nasir 8.Gazi 9.Sunny 10.Rubel 11.Sahadat

  • on March 6, 2013, 17:47 GMT

Tamim, Anamul, Jahurul, Ashraful (surely this is his last chance?!), Mushfiqur, Mahmadullah, Nasir, Elias, Sohag, Rubel, Shahadat (only because Abul Hasan and Robiul Islam aren't up to it. Why on earth weren't Nazmul Hossain or Shafiul Islam picked?!).

Batting still looks decent enough but the pace bowling is very, very weak. Hopefully Bangladesh will take each test to the 5th day, but SL will win 2-0.

  • Ibra95 on March 6, 2013, 17:32 GMT

Shahadat Hossain is a bad choice...he doesn't bowl really well...Nazmul Hossain should get a chance... Well...SL Good luck & BD too (u'll need it xD)

  • TheRisingTeam on March 6, 2013, 17:20 GMT

I just hope though most of our batsman don't play like a T20 player, take your time and just play your game best of luck!

  • M_Rakibul_Islam on March 6, 2013, 17:00 GMT

The batting order shud b like this- Tamim, Jahurul, Ashraful, Mahmudullah, Mominul, Mushfiq, Nasir, Gazi, Elias, Shahadat, Rubel.

  • Sal_H on March 6, 2013, 16:23 GMT

Marshall Ayub should be in the 11. Concerned about the bowling attack.

  • asiacricket1234 on March 6, 2013, 16:08 GMT

Batting is ok what about bowling??? Only Sohag is getting wicket and fast bowlers seem useless :(. Don't think this team can take 20 wicket :(

  • Rafelgibt on March 6, 2013, 15:57 GMT

If Tamim is not 100% fit then Anamul should play in No. 1 position.Otherwise Jahurul deserves a chance as No.2.Then Ashraful, Mominul, Mushfiq, Nasir, Mahmudullah, Shohag Gazi,Elias Sunny,Rubel, Shahadat as follows.Hope our Batsmen are not going to disappoint us making at laest 350+ scores for the bowlers to defend.Roar Tigers Roar>>>>

I rather have Anamul than Jahurul. People question his footwork then why did they select Nazimuddin then before? Anamul has worked on his footwork otherwise how come he averages 43 in first class Cricket? I agree with Ishmum, maybe rest Tamim for the first test so there are no risks. But then again, Tamim knows his place could be under threat by players like Anamul, Marshall, Shamsur, Shahriar etc in all forms.

tamim, jahurul, ashraful, mominul, mushfiq, mahmudullah, nasir, shohag, elias, rubel, shahadat. i think this the best combination.

  • TheRisingTeam on March 6, 2013, 15:17 GMT

Our batting is fine we got plenty of good reserves its our bowlers I'm concerned about especially our pace bowlers. Cannot believe bowlers like Shahadat and Robiul got the nod ahead of Nazmul, Taskin or Shafiul. Probably won't win the test matches but if we play to our potential, I see no reason why we cannot give Sri Lanka a tough series maybe even draw 1.

i like to see tamim , jahurul , ash . mominul . mushi, nashir , mahmud , suhag , ellias , rubel and sahadat are playing in first test. after performing in warm up match mominul should get chance ahead of marshal , and ash should play ahead of anamul haque . my point of view abul are not a perfect for test so sahadat should play , he got experience against SL .ALL others players are autamatic choice.
