Sri Lanka v Bangladesh, 2nd ODI, Hambantota March 25, 2013

Persistent rain leads to washout

  shares 45

Sri Lanka 33 for 0 (Perera 18*, Dilshan 10*) v Bangladesh
Match called off due to rain
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Another rapid start for Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kusal Janith Perera was halted, then aborted, by persistent rain in Hambantota, which arrived at 2:52pm and did not cease until officials were forced to call off the match at 6:44pm. Sri Lanka were 33 without loss after five overs when the covers were called on, with Perera on 18 from 21 balls and Dilshan on 10 from 9 deliveries.

Sri Lanka's openers did not quite match the breakneck pace of Saturday evening's opening stand, but were brutal on errors in length, which the Bangladesh seam bowlers provided regularly. Dilshan leant back to crash his first ball through cover-point, when Rubel Hossain dug it in short, before Perera blasted two more short deliveries to the leg-side boundary in the next two overs. Dilshan was dropped on 9, by a diving Mushfiqur Rahim, who failed to cling to an under-edge lying low to the left, but there was hardly any time for the mistake to cost Bangladesh, as the rains arrived at the end of that over.

The hosts now head to Pallekele for the final ODI with a 1-0 lead. Southwest monsoon rains have arrived early in much of the country however, and a wet finish could well be in store for the series.

Thanks Mr.Rain for saving another definite defeat for BD thus in the end. Just wondering why the hell so many injury issues raised for BD team on this series only ! This team now really looks like, Shewag's ordinary team without their main players like ; Shakib, Tamim, Mashrafe, Shafiul and Nazmul. Team now doesn't have full strength neither in bolling nor in batting & it would not worthy enough even if we say this as BD's "A" team for now as well. Hope BCB would be much more careful & reliable to decide what sort of a plan and strategy they should take before making such foreign tours next time.

The longest losing streak in ODIs as well as Tests is in BDs credit. 21 and 23 without a win!

srilanka started very well. they are a good team, but it was the best chance for bangladesh to get back in the series. because conditions would suit bangladesh bowlers. this is one of the most unlucky series for bangladesh. hope we can level the series in the next match

@ JACK.SPARROW ; At the same time ask your BD friends to watch their back too without worrying about SL future. If you remember they were talking heavily on SL experienced guys like Kumar, Mahela, Dilshan & Herath and What will happen to SL cricket after their retirements.

  • hasib9 on March 25, 2013, 22:12 GMT

Notice BD went in with just 2 specialist bowlers: Razzak & Gazi. This is unbelievable stuff. What's wrong with including Musharraf and dropping Anamul? Having 3 good bowlers will give is some sort of a chance. Besides Musharraf can bat better than Anamul. Ashraful can open.

  • on March 25, 2013, 21:12 GMT

I dont know if SL fans remember when we went to their country and beat them 5-1. Perhaps if SL could learn to bat the full quota of 20 overs vs India in T20 matches, SL fans would not despise India so much.

@ibbabi Childish comments people like you post here really make me sick. It's quite understandable that you're unhappy with current/past performance of Bangladesh but claiming that they shouldn't even play is a bit excessive! In every game in the world you will see weak teams and strong teams playing against each other which is also indifferent in cricket as well. You've kept some memorable stats as well about how pathetically Bangladesh has lost to other teams. I'm a fan of Bangladesh cricket and if I knew such stats about any other weak teams at least I would post some encouraging comments here. It's irrational to believe you've pointed those stats only to criticize!

@ extraz; so what do you think, which looks most embarrassing, world cup winning team bowled out for 43 Often or a ranked below team that has never been bowled out below 50 failed to win world cup in its early days? Man, you had extra dose ,i guess

  • Dhutugemunu on March 25, 2013, 19:01 GMT

Okay friends listen to BD fans. Accept that BD is the greatest team in the Subcontinent. Other subcontinent teams can never achieve that high (in losing matches). 3-66 in 77 in Tests (0-55 in 58 against Ind, Aus, SA, Eng, SL, Pak and NZ). 75-191 in 269 ODIs (11-123 in 135 against Ind, Aus, SA, Eng, SL and Pak). 8-19 in 27 T20Is (0-14 in 14 against Ind, Aus, SA, Eng, SL, Pak and NZ). lol

  • British_North_America on March 25, 2013, 18:39 GMT

United India started playing test in 1932 and it took almost 60 years for a player like Tendulkar to come in international scenery.Great players need some time to be born. You cannot get a Don Bradman every 20 years.Give Bangladesh at least 50 more years.

  • AzAb12754 on March 25, 2013, 18:30 GMT

Why are Indian fans here when this series does not involved them? I remember when you guys were celebrating a 100 100 against a team like Bangladesh and now Bangladesh are pathetic etc lolz can't have it all your way :)

  • on March 25, 2013, 18:25 GMT

Sri lanka has been the most consistent Asian side in all formats in the last couple of years. India was embarrassed so many times in the recent past, so was Pakistan(even though im pakistani) but SL have performed admirably over the past couple of years and always gave a good fight abroad. Bangladesh are no match for SL, They are far behind them in terms of quality.

  • Baseball-Sucks on March 25, 2013, 18:07 GMT

@supporter_of_minnows ; Don't try to take credits for something you didn't do. Bangladesh didn't knock India out of WC 2007. Sri Lanka did. Of course, BD won the match against India. But It was the SL match which was do or die for India, which eventually they lost.

  • on March 25, 2013, 18:02 GMT

@ibbani can you recall India was all out for 54 against Sri Lanka (2000), Pakistan for 43 against West Indies(1993) and Sri Lanka for 43 against South Africa (2012). The Indian national cricket team has played Test cricket from 1932, Pakistan from 1952 , Sri Lanka from 1982 and Bangladesh just form 2000. You are comparing Bangladesh team with them!!!? Bangladesh team is improving very fast according to the last 1.5 years record. Cricket Legend Mr. Brian Lara gave a status on Facebook (23 March 2012) after Asia cup final "..........Bangladesh lost, but won the hearts of million people, in fact they won everything except the cup! Be aware world, Bangladesh is the new terror!

  • supporter_of_minnows on March 25, 2013, 17:46 GMT

@extraz after winning worldcups also Pak makes scores of 43 n 78 whereas BD has a lowest score of 62 that too when we started playing testasin 2000!!! and Ind we knock them out of tournaments :P

  • asiacricket1234 on March 25, 2013, 17:39 GMT

Well SL got lucky today I think ;). Cant believe BD fans are complaining about Rain. Calm down people not like SLC can control the weather lol. and why some people brouhg India Pakistan in this match report???

  • BOND_OO7 on March 25, 2013, 17:26 GMT

So what's coming up in the 3rd odi? Is it a tornado or tsunami like 2004? god forbid!!!

  • Extraz on March 25, 2013, 17:13 GMT

@abcdef_12345...Pakistan and india have also won world cups t20 world cup as well as 50 overs world cup how many world cups or even matches against top sides have BD won?!

  • on March 25, 2013, 17:08 GMT

Frist to say i am Sri lankan. I don' no why SLC scheduled day and night matches during the north east monsoon period. Afternoon shower oftenly occur in Octomber to April period. I think only day matches should play in that period of the year in Sri Lanka .

  • KallisTheGreatest on March 25, 2013, 17:01 GMT

Thanks to the persistent rain, Bangladesh escaped from a 3-0 whitewash.I think it's better bangladesh playing with 4 or 5 men spin attack than this ordinary pace attack.

  • on March 25, 2013, 16:58 GMT

@sadequl you know what we should give up this sort of mentality first. with the fear of loss, a match called off by rain should not be welcomed, even though we do not have our key players in our team.we lay ourselves open to ridicule by showing such mentality.

  • ibbani on March 25, 2013, 16:48 GMT

@abcdef - Pakistan still holds the lowest, 43, well, there are many people in the world knowing cricket, so I dont want to comment on BD again bcos, it is universal truth. dont compare other Asian teams with BD, they are in high 90s on win loss ration against BD. India, Pak, SRL all have thrashed them royally, the BD tiger has no tail to wag against these gaints.

  • ibbani on March 25, 2013, 16:41 GMT

Well to all, especially BD fans, there is much more than cricket in the world, rain is important than cricket, if rain stops this match, it would not affect much as it really feeds thousand s of stomachs with good food. And SRL is not an exception not to rain in summer. May be it does not rain at all in BD, or you have not seen rain at all?

  • Baseball-Sucks on March 25, 2013, 15:42 GMT

@Warm_Coffee ; Well, now you can't say anything bad about SL cricket after that thrashing you got. LOL. Now at least blame the SL weather if it makes you feel better. LOL. By the way Its funny that you complain about SL weather. Do you know that New York Times named SL as the Best Holiday Destination in the world ? LOL

  • Sinhaya on March 25, 2013, 15:38 GMT

@Abu Ayub Milon, as if it never rains in any other cricket playing country?? Forgot what happened in the infamous Sydney ODI between Sri Lanka and Australia 2 months ago? Forgot what happened so far in the England NZ test series? First and second tests both were rain hit causing draws. I can explain the list non stop. For god sake stop singling out Sri Lanka kindly.

  • Warm_Coffee on March 25, 2013, 15:25 GMT

  • crzcric on March 25, 2013, 15:13 GMT

@Abu Ayub Milon :thank weather for save you team from another big loss.Don't blame srilankan weather, that shows how amateur u r .SL is one of the finest country which has a very good weather. If u want to blame somebody blame for the organizers. I have no idea why they always organize series in rainy season. we can hardly see SL play in SL in dry season.hope rain will save from another embarrassing loss in 3rd odi.

  • British_North_America on March 25, 2013, 14:54 GMT

  • on March 25, 2013, 14:46 GMT

So much rain in Sri Lanka.their weather is favorable for playing football, not Cricket.Yet they lost too many match in football against Bangladesh.

  • SL_rockz on March 25, 2013, 14:39 GMT

@ Abu Ayub Milon :- hey havenot you seen 4 days of play lost in international test matches before? ...Havent you seen a single match in 3 ODI series washed away by rain ??? Is it the first time ??? You speak like it had never happened anywhere bfore and like cricket should not be played in SL.... Very hilarious comments and it shows clear jealous about SL coz they have reached so far beyond in cricket that u obviously could not go .donot be like that ....

  • Htc-Android on March 25, 2013, 13:59 GMT

Bangladesh are lucky today. They escaped from a 3-0 whitewash. Now they can come and say that we were expect to whitewash 3-0 but we dint. Now they can claim that they are not minnows. Because they dint get whitewashed by us.

@ Abir - yes I am concerned about match in cricket, not mismatch, BD is not a match to any international team with their current, past form. World feel like laughing when your talkitive captain talks much than he plays. Just recall/recollect/remember the number of matches they have lost, the way they have lost. 375 against India in WC opener, 58 all out against WI, why they should they play even. Thanks god BD fans - you did not get a chance to sufer against SL. 6.6 in 5 overs, imagine if they had continued the same, I am sure they would score atleast 300+.
