Five uncapped players in Sri Lanka's T20 squad

66

Five uncapped players have been named in Sri Lanka's squad for the one-off Twenty20 that will complete the Bangladesh tour in Pallekele. Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Nuwan Kulasekara have been rested for the match. Mahela Jayawardene has recovered sufficiently from a finger fracture to be available for selection, but was not picked either.*

Allrounders Shehan Jayasuriya, Chaturanga de Silva, Ramith Rambukwella, and fast bowler Ishan Jayaratne were the new additions to the squad, while batsman Angelo Perera, already in the ODI squad, also found a place.

The selectors' focus on youth development is writ large in their latest team, as all five uncapped players are yet to turn 24, with Jeevan Mendis the only player named in the squad above the age of 30.

Kithuruwan Vithanage, who debuted in the Test series and is in the ODI squad, retained his place for the final assignment of the tour. Sachithra Senanayake was the only specialist spinner, with no room for either Ajantha Mendis, Akila Dananjaya or Tharindu Kaushal.

The match will be Dinesh Chandimal's first as Twenty20 captain, with Malinga set to be vice-captain for the first time. The squad for the third ODI was unchanged from the side named for the first two matches, after the second game was washed out in Hambantota.

Twenty20 squad: Kusal Perera, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dilshan Munaweera, Dinesh Chandimal (capt & wk), Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Kithruwan Withanage, Angelo Perera, Lasith Malinga (vc), Sachithra Senanayaka, Shaminda Eranga, Chathuranga de Silva, Shehan Jayasuriya, Ramith Rambukwella, Ishan Jayaratne, Thisara Perera

*This story had originally stated Jayawardene was still recovering from injury and was unavailable for selection.

Even though there are 5 uncapped players, Angelo Perera or Kithruwan Withanage are the most likely candidates to debut.

Probable XI : Kusal Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Sachithra Senanayaka, Shaminda Eranga, 2 out of Dilshan Munaweera/Angelo Perera/Kithruwan Withanage.

Kasun Madushanka, Saliya Saman and Ishan Jayaratne are probably out best uncapped fast bowling prospects. we need to expose these players at international level. So with that said I am happy that at least Ishan Jayaratne got a chance. Hope he gets picked for the final 11 and preforms.

it is not a good idea to get all young cricketers to playfor T20 due to the fact that their concentration is only 4 overs with the ball and average of 7 runs per over for 30 minutes with the bat. how about the longer version of the game???

chandimal is a fine batsman for longer version of the game and Mathews should have continued as cpt

bangladesh team doesnt have tamim, shakib, mortaza?it is not a big deal.even SL team didnt have Mahela,Herath in ODIs.in ODIs SL team found a new good openeer.in T20 no one will be there except malinga.that is the most important thing than winning that series.will see how new guys play with BD team.

Hope we are not going to hear about this old players talk from BD fans during the T20I between SL and BD. Some BD fans were crying that since they don't have Shakib, Mortaza, Tamim and some other unknown players, current BD is like BD-A team. In next T20I SL doesn't have Mahela, Sanga, Dilshan, Kulasekara or Herath. Happy now? You wanted to see the SL future side. Isn't it? Enjoy.

@ ex-Srilankan; If you don't know read some old articles in Cricinfo. Dinesh Chandimal was given the captaincy in T20I team and Angelo Mathews was given the captaincy in Test and ODI teams. That's called splitting captaincy responsibilities. For an example once England had 3 captains. Strauss - Test, Cook - ODIs, Broad - T20I.

Can the selectors justify the inclusion of Minister's son in the squad as per the below performances. What has he done in the past or present in the club games? Are they going on his Royal College statistics?

Good to see Munaweera back after a break. Does it make sense to have Mathews ,Mendis and Malinga in this young line up?
