And that's tea. A fine session, England still well on top with those two wickets but once again as the cricket went on Sri Lanka settled and built a stand and they would be looking far healthier had Chandimal not thrown away his wicket. Jayawardene, M. has played superbly and looked very much at home on a ground where he has now scored over 2,000 runs. We'll be back in 20 minutes...

61.5

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, OUT, that has swung back in a mile, and Anderson has got the lbw appeal in his favour, Sri Lanka go for the review, they have to, this is the last batting pair, he pushed forward in defence, but ended up pushing about a foot outside the eventual line of the ball as it swerved back in too much from a good length, hit him above the knee roll, replays show that was hitting top of middle and leg, on-field umpire's decision was out, and so it remains

No new ball just yet but there is a change and Samit Patel returns to the attack...

80.1

Patel to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, tossed up on off stump and driven out to long off

80.2

Patel to Herath, OUT, and there's the breakthrough! A paddle sweep misses, Herath is hit on the full in front of off stump...the review actually has it as umpire's call so closer than first inspection but out nevertheless and Herath's vigil comes to an end. But he did hold an end up well enough

HMRKB Herath lbw b Patel 5 (65m 30b 0x4 0x6) SR: 16.66

80.3

Patel to Welegedara, no run, off stump and blocked back to mid on

80.5

81.6

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, dropped into the covers and they scramble a run that keeps Jayawardene on strike

New ball time and James Anderson, who I always thinks has a great name for a darts players, resumes in place of Patel, who's removed from the attack after taking a wicket for the second time today...

82.1

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, full just outside off and left alone

82.2

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, off stump and blocked into the off side

82.3

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, pulled round the corner and a chance for Panesar in the deep but straight through his hands! The old, comedy Monty in the field returns and that is a bad drop, straight to him, an uncontrolled top edge and Panesar took it on the base of the left hand before it slid over the rope

That's 150 for the skipper...

82.4

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, played off the back foot behind square to the fielder

82.5

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, defended on off stump from a length

Another chance to pick up Jayawardene goes begging and that was by far the best of the three opportunities...here's Broad...

83.1

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, full and driven to mid on

83.2

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, late cut produces a bottom edge past the off stump, bounces to Prior who saves well

83.3

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 runs, down again! A lofted drive goes straight up in the air, it's Monty again! But again through the fingers! And again Jayawardene survives

83.4

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, and to rub salt in the wound, a lovely clip past Panesar at mid on that whistles away for four

83.5

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, now a full toss outside off is dispatched through the covers

83.6

Anderson to Welegedara, no run, short outside off and left alone

86.5

Anderson to Welegedara, no run, much better, back of a length and beating the outside edge

Right, we are ready to go. Out comes Jayawardene again, with Welegedara. England have just about broken their huddle. The steel bands are playing too. James Anderson will resume bowling. He can still complete a five-for. Two slips and a short leg

9.55am Talking of dropped catches, this is a good picture. Jonty Panesar had a tough day yesterday, good to see the captain just patting the back. There's always tomorrow. It was amusing, though, to see Panesar confused between traditional cups and reverse cups. It was also amusing to hear Michael Atherton suggest reverse cups was "the Aussie style". I thought it was just an Indian thing: to refer to it as the Australian way of catching. Anyway, all is in readiness. It is a bright and sunny day in Galle. Lots of hydration and rehydration will be required

9.45am As we wait for the start of play on the second day, here is a milestone alert. If Jayawardene gets to his seventh double-century, he will be behind only Bradman, Lara and Sangakkara. Yes, he is still some way off - 32 runs to be precise - but he has manipulated strike superbly, helped no doubt by shoddy fielding and defensive captaincy by Andrew Strauss. Of the last 98 runs scored by Sri Lanka, Jayawardene has scored 79, and only one wicket has fallen during that period

9.30am Hello. This is Sidharth Monga welcoming you to the commentary of day two of the Galle Test.

Since March 2001, Sri Lanka have lost only one home Test after winning the toss. For about two sessions yesterday, England would have been thought of winning a Test in Sri Lanka despite losing the toss as a distinct possibility. It still is a possibility at 289 for 8, but the final session was a reminder of how tough it can be for visiting sides. It clearly became a physical battle too, and having lost part of their advantage, England will know they have to take a lead of at least 80-100 runs once they are done batting. Before that, though, they will have to find a way through Mahela Jayawardene and friends. Jayawardene played another gem yesterday. Andrew McGlashan has more on the knock here

90.1

Anderson to Welegedara, 4 leg byes, bangs it in short, looking to bring short leg into play, rib high, but a bit too straight, and Wele manages to get enough thigh pad onto this to get it past Prior

90.2

Anderson to Welegedara, FOUR, another short ball, and a good one, towards his chest, middle-stump line, Chanaka doesn't know what to do, hangs his bat at it, and gets a healthy enough top edge to clear Prior and get four runs

90.3

Anderson to Welegedara, no run, fuller now, Chanaka more comfortable with it. Pushes it back to Anderson, who has a mock throw at him

90.4

Anderson to Welegedara, 4 leg byes, another superb short delivery. The bumpers have got progressively better. This is a mean one, and crashes into the helmet of the ducking Welegedara. It flies towards second slip where Trott drops it for four ore leg-byes. Good thing Wele didn't touch it, or we could another drop to the list

90.5

Anderson to Welegedara, no run, stays away from this bouncer, which bounces a tough too high

90.6

Anderson to Welegedara, FOUR, whoa. Enough of ducking and weaving. Clears the front leg and pulls this bouncer away through midwicket. Like swatting a fly. What a first over for Sri Lanka

End of over 91 (16 runs) Sri Lanka 305/8
UWMBCA Welegedara    18* (24b 4x4)      JM Anderson    18-5-64-3

Stuart Broad to bowl now. Are we going to see the same old tactics where England look to get only one batsman out, and not Jayawardene? Strauss takes him time to set the field. He has moved Panesar from mid-on to deep backward square, and then to deep point. Oh come on already, poor Monty will be tired even before the game begins. And we have a deep-set field, if you are curious

91.1

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, length ball on the pads, flicked away, and turns down the single

91.2

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, length ball outside off, defended to cover

So we are back to the play where Jaywardene blocks first four, and then gets either a single or boundary off one of the last two. All modern captains behave this way. Frustrating

91.3

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short of a length, outside off, left alone, even though the ball does come back in. Misses the off by about six inches

91.4

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, this one jags back in sharply, hits him high on the pad. No harm done

The field comes in, but surprisingly not by themselves. Strauss had to wave his arms and call them in. Still singles available to third man and deep square

91.5

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, looks to dab and run, but had played this straight to backward point

91.6

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, looks for the boundary here. Drives on the up, crunchy shot, but finds short extra cover. So Anderson gets another over at Welegedara

Two men for the bouncer in the deep, and a short leg in place

92.1

Anderson to Welegedara, 1 run, Short again, into the ribs, Welegedara gets a leading edge as he looks to turn this to leg. This takes him away from the strike too

A long chat between Strauss and Anderson. Mid-on comes up

92.2

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, length ball, down the leg side, Jaywardene will feel he has missed out as he fails to make contact

92.3

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, length, on off, no movement, Jayawardene moves forward and defends

92.4

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, half-volley, just outside off, flicked back to Anderson

92.5

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, another half-volley, just outside off, drops this towards point with soft hands, and takes the single before Patel can get around. And strike manipulated again

And now we have six men on the fence for Welegedara

92.6

Anderson to Welegedara, OUT, lovely bowling. Anderson has done it by himself. Welegedara must have been expecting a bouncer, as he is stuck on the back foot. Anderson slips in the slower offcutter, Welegedara's foot is nowhere near it, and it breaks through the gap between bat and pad, hitting the top of leg. That's a clever dismissal

Lakmal is the new man in, but Jayawardene is on strike

93.1

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short, cut away to third man, and the single is refused

93.2

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, Jayawardene sees mid-on is up, and he clears the front leg to loft this length ball over mid-on's head. It was the slower ball, and hence it got more height than distance, but it was good enough to beat Samit Patel

Mid-on goes back now

93.3

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, bouncer, and MJ ducks under it

93.4

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, length ball on off, pushed to sweeper-cover, and the single is turned down again

93.5

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, another bouncer, down the leg side this time, MJ shapes up to pull, but sees it is a touch too high to be able to do so well. Lets it go

Broad can't bowl a bouncer now. Has bowled two in this over already. Slips goes wide, trying to block the dab to third man for a single

93.6

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, that man was placed right, Jayawardene dabbed it towards him, to his left actually, but a diving Swann fumbles at gully, and allows him the single

96.1

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, half-volley outside off, pushed to deep cover, doesn't take the single

One slip, one short midwicket, an extra cover in. Everyone else at the fence

96.2

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, driven to long-off, no run again

96.3

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, OUT, Oh well done Anderson. Just when I was about to say this is looking like a middle-wicket net session. Anderson gets his fifth. Just short of a length, just outside off, Jayawardene comes forward to defend. The ball just holds its line, the edge is taken, and finally Anderson has produced the breakthrough

DPMD Jayawardene c †Prior b Anderson 180 (396m 315b 22x4 3x6) SR: 57.14

10.37am Jayawardene raises his bat to the crowd as he walks back. This has been a stellar effort. Anderson gets to keep the ball too. We are going to get a short break here for the changeover. The England bowlers, you will have to say, have done their job despite Jayawardene ruining some for them. Now is the turn of the batsmen, who failed against Pakistan. This is still a flat wicket, but we don't know how their batsmen will fare against low bounce and turn. Join us in about 10 to find out. Andrew Cowell is in with an update from NZ, and also a touch of wryness: 'Woo hoo, the Saffas have failed to beat the Black Caps so England move a further point clear in the ICC rankings. Who said we weren't a worthy No1 Test side?!!!"
