England in Sri Lanka Test Series - 1st Test

Sri Lanka v England

Sri Lanka won by 75 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

9.30am Hello and welcome to coverage of this short series between Sri Lanka and England. We are starting in the wonderful venue of Galle where the news is that Sri Lanka have won the toss and decided to bat first so it could be a long day for England. The major team news is that Samit Patel makes his Test debut having been preferred over Ravi Bopara who picked up a side strain during the warm-up matches. Bopara could have still played as a batsman, but England feel they need another bowling option in these conditions. Will confirm full teams as soon as I can.

9.40am Here at the teams: Sri Lanka 1 Lahiru Thirimanne, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Dinesh Chandimal, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Chanaka Welegedera

England 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Samit Patel 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar.

England played two warm-up games in the build up to this series and they won both in some style, so the start has been good but the real Test is yet to come...

Strauss feels that taking wickets early and putting the batting line-up under pressure is the best way to start a series - can't argue with him on that. And oh' he thinks that the pitch looks pretty good - missed out the part where he said if it was for batting or bowling...or did he say?

9.58 Here comes the openers, play about to start under the famous Lankan sun.

0.1

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, bit of away moment outside the off stump, no shot offered as per Test match tradition

0.2

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, again left alone outside the off stump, this one was bit wider

0.3

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, one more to the keeper, bit of away moment for the seamer here

0.4

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, pushed off the back-foot to the cover point region, Patel comes across and cuts off the single

0.5

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, closer to the off stump line and this kept it's line and Thirimanne defends it down on the off side

Review straightaway

0.6

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, Anderson was setting him up for this, the one that pitches in line with the leg stump and straightening. Thirimanne shoulders arm and get this on the pad, looked bit high but England decide to appeal...

That was high and also the ball was pitching marginally outside the left stump, not to the naked eye though. Anyway "not out" is the verdict and a review is wasted.

HDRL Thirimanne    0* (6b)      JM Anderson    1-1-0-0
TM Dilshan    0* (0b)

1.1

Broad to Dilshan, 3 runs, pitched up on middle off, Dilsan picks it up early and works it away through midwicket, Panesar give case and keeps it down to three. Bye bye jet lag

1.2

Broad to Thirimanne, no run, another one on the stumps and, Thirimanne taps it away on the leg side

1.3

Broad to Thirimanne, 2 runs, on the pads and at a convenient height, Thirimanne works it away behind square and gets off the mark

1.4

Broad to Thirimanne, no run, on the middle and off stump line, not much movement for Broad here and that is nicely played down on the off side

1.5

Broad to Thirimanne, (no ball) 1 run, extra effort, probably looking for some swing - oversteps and ends up with a no-ball. They scamper through for a single to square leg as well

1.5

Broad to Dilshan, FOUR, fuller in length and in the slot outside the off stump, Dilshan goes for the drive and ends up with a thick edge down to the third man fence

1.6

Broad to Dilshan, no run, close to the off stump line, this time Dilsan times his shot much better and the ball trickles down to mid-off

End of over 2 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 11/0
TM Dilshan    7* (3b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-11-0
HDRL Thirimanne    3* (10b)      JM Anderson    1-1-0-0

2.1

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, good length delivery outside the off stump, Thirimanne leaves it through to the keeper

2.2

Anderson to Thirimanne, OUT, edged and gone! Anderson persists with that line outside the off stump, slightly fuller on this occasion and Thirimanne is in two minds and in the end it was a nothing prod outside the off stump and the edge goes straight to Swann at second slip

HDRL Thirimanne c Swann b Anderson 3 (12m 12b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

Close to a classic delivery and full marks to Anderson for keeping up the pressure, there is only so many you can leave...It was a think edge and the ball went at a comfortable height to Swann

2.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, OUT, Gone first ball! another fuller length delivery outside the off stump, slight moment but hard to say which way. A perfect delivery first up and even Sangakkara could not resist having a poke at it and this time the edge went straight to the keeper. Anderson on a hat-trick here and Strauss' ploy of taking early wickets seems to be working just fine

KC Sangakkara c †Prior b Anderson 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Replay suggest that it was bit of a lazy push from Sangakkara, but it was the line and length that did him in.

2.4

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, soft delivery outside the off stump, defended watchfully

2.5

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short of a good length delivery outside the off stump and it's bit too wide to make Jayawardene play at it

2.6

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, pushed away towards cover and that's the end of a fine over.

Anderson and England have started well here, can they keep up the pressure with Jayawardene around is the big question

End of over 3 (wicket maiden) Sri Lanka 11/2

TM Dilshan    7* (3b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-11-0

3.1

Broad to Dilshan, no run, driven away on the off side

By they way, before I forget - Thirimanne was Anderson's 250th Test wicket.

3.2

Broad to Dilshan, no run, defended down on the leg side, no single there

3.3

Broad to Dilshan, no run, left alone outside the off stump

3.4

Broad to Dilshan, FOUR, Dilshan in his elements here - short and wide outside the off stump and he gives it everything trying to cut away through point, ball clips the edge and flies over the slips

Two down on not, expect Dilshan to play his shots

3.5

Broad to Dilshan, OUT, Broad too joins the party! good length delivery outside the off stump, nothing great there but Dilshan makes it look good by pushing at it with zero feet movement. Sweet sound of leather on edge and the ball goes straight to Strauss at first slip

TM Dilshan c Strauss b Broad 11 (23m 8b 2x4 0x6) SR: 137.50

Another nothing shot but another big wicket.

Three slips and gully for the new man

3.6

Broad to Samaraweera, no run, short of a good length delivery outside the off stump, bit of extra bounce and Samaraweera leaves it through to the keeper

End of over 4 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 15/3

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, another line and length delivery outside the off stump, Mahela gets behind the line and presents a straight bat

4.3

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, width offered outside the off stump and that's cut away nicely behind point, no stopping that

Andrew McGlashan is up early to watch the tour opener and pings "A wonderful start for England but some horrid batting from Sri Lanka. Still in one-day mode which, I guess, is hardly surprising."

4.4

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, played away on the off side

4.5

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, bit of a wild drive and the ball rolls back to the bowler, off the inside edge

4.6

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, drifting on to the pads and that's nicely worked away to the fine leg fence - easy runs

End of over 5 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 23/3

5.1

Broad to Samaraweera, no run, defended outside the off stump and the ball rolls away towards cover

5.2

Broad to Samaraweera, no run, short of a good length delivery outside the off stump, Samaraweera hides his bat - looks like that one too has an edge!

5.4

Broad to Samaraweera, 1 no ball, left alone outside the off stump

Broad to Samaraweera, no run, pitched up on the pads and driven down to mid-on

5.6

Broad to Samaraweera, no run, good delivery to end the over - on the middle off stumps line and Samaraweera defends it off the back-foot

McGlashan reminds me that he is not up early he is running on time and is at the ground watching the game. Looks like I need some sleep badly

6.3

6.4

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short of a good length delivery outside the off stump, hint of swing but nothing to write home about and Jayawardene leaves it through to the keeper. It will take lot more to get this man to make a mistake

6.5

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, pushed off the back-foot and an easy single to cover

6.6

Anderson to Samaraweera, no run, good length delivery on the middle and off stump line, did it say a touch low? anyway Samaraweera gets behind the line and defends it well. Ball seems to have hit the bottom half of the bat

7.2

7.3

Broad to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, played off the front-foot to the cover region, nicely little Test cricket tap

Isaam: "The dismissed batsmen will be gutted...these two are showing just how you can bat well in test cricket: by applying yourselves. I seriously think that Dilshan has to go either out of the Test team or lower in the order. Being 35 years old, he doesn't have that much time left, and SL can breed a new opener (Tharanga?!). In any case, he is not setting a good example with his shot-selection. An average of 40 in the modern game is simply not good enough and SL have plenty of better opening options."

Back for the second session

Manoj: "@Isaam: I know Sanga will be gutted. The "thing" with Dilshan is that he provides that attacking mindset, that's important in test cricket now. That's what he lacks, and that's what made him a terrible captain: just one-dimensional."
