England in Sri Lanka Test Series - 1st Test

Sri Lanka v England

Sri Lanka won by 75 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

2.2

Anderson to Thirimanne, OUT, edged and gone! Anderson persists with that line outside the off stump, slightly fuller on this occasion and Thirimanne is in two minds and in the end it was a nothing prod outside the off stump and the edge goes straight to Swann at second slip

HDRL Thirimanne c Swann b Anderson 3 (12m 12b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

Sri Lanka 11/1   TM Dilshan 7* (3b 1x4)   JM Anderson 1.2-1-0-1

2.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, OUT, Gone first ball! another fuller length delivery outside the off stump, slight moment but hard to say which way. A perfect delivery first up and even Sangakkara could not resist having a poke at it and this time the edge went straight to the keeper. Anderson on a hat-trick here and Strauss' ploy of taking early wickets seems to be working just fine

KC Sangakkara c †Prior b Anderson 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Sri Lanka 11/2   TM Dilshan 7* (3b 1x4)   JM Anderson 1.3-1-0-2

3.5

Broad to Dilshan, OUT, Broad too joins the party! good length delivery outside the off stump, nothing great there but Dilshan makes it look good by pushing at it with zero feet movement. Sweet sound of leather on edge and the ball goes straight to Strauss at first slip

TM Dilshan c Strauss b Broad 11 (23m 8b 2x4 0x6) SR: 137.50

Sri Lanka 15/3   DPMD Jayawardene 0* (3b)   SCJ Broad 1.5-0-15-1

32.4

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, OUT, oh dear, Thilan has been done in by Mahela's straight drive and Anderson's half-stop, just what Sri Lanka did not need, both the batsmen were looking steady, Anderson got down his right hand down as Mahela drove this full delivery straight, and ended up parrying the ball on to the non-striker's stumps, Thilan was a long way out his crease, and turned back as he realised what was happening, but was caught short, he was down on his knees and helplessly stared at the damage Anderson had caused

TT Samaraweera run out 20 (107m 82b 3x4 0x6) SR: 24.39

Sri Lanka 67/4   DPMD Jayawardene 30* (96b 3x4 1x6)   JM Anderson 7.4-3-11-2

49.6

Patel to Chandimal, OUT, now gone! Awful stroke, a swish across the line and produces a big top edge that falls comfortably to Bell at cover. A first Test wicket for Samit Patel, it was a ordinary delivery on a length on off stump but the horrendous heave brought a wild edge in the air and it was pouched easily

LD Chandimal c Bell b Patel 27 (65m 48b 2x4 2x6) SR: 56.25

Sri Lanka 128/5   DPMD Jayawardene 61* (153b 8x4 1x6)   SR Patel 8-1-26-1

61.5

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, OUT, that has swung back in a mile, and Anderson has got the lbw appeal in his favour, Sri Lanka go for the review, they have to, this is the last batting pair, he pushed forward in defence, but ended up pushing about a foot outside the eventual line of the ball as it swerved back in too much from a good length, hit him above the knee roll, replays show that was hitting top of middle and leg, on-field umpire's decision was out, and so it remains

HAPW Jayawardene lbw b Anderson 23 (47m 40b 3x4 0x6) SR: 57.50

Sri Lanka 170/6   DPMD Jayawardene 80* (184b 10x4 1x6)   JM Anderson 10.5-4-27-3

65.6

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, OUT, that is some excellent work from the England captain, he has earned his side a wicket out of nowhere, Randiv was out of his crease as Mahela pushed towards cover, Strauss let it rip at the non-striker's end, hit the stumps, and Randiv was inches short

S Randiv run out 12 (19m 15b 1x4 0x6) SR: 80.00

Sri Lanka 191/7   DPMD Jayawardene 89* (194b 11x4 1x6)   JM Anderson 13-4-34-3

80.2

Patel to Herath, OUT, and there's the breakthrough! A paddle sweep misses, Herath is hit on the full in front of off stump...the review actually has it as umpire's call so closer than first inspection but out nevertheless and Herath's vigil comes to an end. But he did hold an end up well enough

HMRKB Herath lbw b Patel 5 (65m 30b 0x4 0x6) SR: 16.66

Sri Lanka 253/8   DPMD Jayawardene 142* (250b 15x4 3x6)   SR Patel 8.2-1-27-2

92.6

Anderson to Welegedara, OUT, lovely bowling. Anderson has done it by himself. Welegedara must have been expecting a bouncer, as he is stuck on the back foot. Anderson slips in the slower offcutter, Welegedara's foot is nowhere near it, and it breaks through the gap between bat and pad, hitting the top of leg. That's a clever dismissal

UWMBCA Welegedara b Anderson 19 (62m 26b 4x4 0x6) SR: 73.07

Sri Lanka 307/9   DPMD Jayawardene 169* (300b 20x4 3x6)   JM Anderson 19-5-66-4

96.3

Anderson to DPMD Jayawardene, OUT, Oh well done Anderson. Just when I was about to say this is looking like a middle-wicket net session. Anderson gets his fifth. Just short of a length, just outside off, Jayawardene comes forward to defend. The ball just holds its line, the edge is taken, and finally Anderson has produced the breakthrough

DPMD Jayawardene c †Prior b Anderson 180 (396m 315b 22x4 3x6) SR: 57.14

Sri Lanka 318/10   RAS Lakmal 0* (6b)   JM Anderson 20.3-5-72-5
