Following Zaheer Khan's withdrawal, the Indian squad in Sri Lanka has been hit by another injury crisis with fast bowler Sreesanth returning home due to a knee injury. He suffered a medial collateral ligament tear in his left knee and has been declared unfit to take part in the Tests. Munaf Patel, who last made an international appearance in November 2009, has been named his replacement.
Sreesanth's availability was in doubt yesterday when he missed the team's first net session on tour. His team-mate Harbhajan Singh too missed practice as he was down with fever. Though India flew down two rookie bowlers in Umesh Yadav and Jaidev Unadkat to practice with the team, the team management has anyway decided to to call in Munaf for Sreesanth.
Munaf and Abhimanyu Mithun, who replaced Zaheer, are likely to compete for a place in the XI as Ishant Sharma's seam bowling partner for the first Test starting July 18. Earlier, Zaheer pulled out of the tour due to a shoulder injury. The loss of the seam duo will stretch India's fast bowling reserves even further because that's the one department in which they have been found wanting in recent months.
Sreesanth checked into the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore on Tuesday for an assessment of the injury to his knee. He was examined by the physio Ashish Kaushik and is likely to undergo his rehabilitation process at the academy for a few more days. "I just bowled seven balls there in Sri Lanka! What to do. That's how it goes, I guess," Sreesanth said.

I dont know why they are complaining that Srikkanth is giving priority for south indian and TN players. Look at the squard there are five from south (only one from TN) and eleven from north . The complaint is baseless
Posted by Sanaur on (July 17 2010, 10:02 AM GMT)Is someone dare to ask srikanth that why he is not considering to include the name of Irfan Pathan in any format of game I really pray to Almighty GOD to remove or terminate from his post as chief selector otherwise he will defininely spoil the indian cricket not only because of he is not including to irfan but he is preparing the chinnai crecket team instead to prepare Indain Cricket team

Posted by nataraajds on (July 15 2010, 13:29 PM GMT)Injuries are part of cricket, but selection of munaf for sreesanth is not a right choice because like Nehra , munaf is also a injury candidate.. we should have sent Praveen kumar who is in good form or RP singh or Vinaykumar. munaf did not even figure in any international matches for some time and never selected to Indian A team also. just few days back our selectors sent "two young bowlers" to make 18 to lanka and now they have taken complete "U" turn and selected out of touch & injury candidate munaf, what is this ????

Posted by adurnithin on (July 15 2010, 08:16 AM GMT)What about Praveen Kumar?I think he is having the best average and strike rate in first class than any other bowler considered for the test team..why is he labeled only as a one day bowler?atleast try him..aleast he can swing the ball..what is special in Mithun..with only one ranji season test quality bowler..is unearthed?he did'nt do anything special after that....also..

He would have been the best replacement for Sreesanth & /or Zaheer.Munaf will most likely be flown back with some injury after the first test. Sreesanth, Munaf, Kumar & RP have all had their share of injuries. It is amazing these guys are so unfit physically. If Harbhajan is not fit to play, Ashwin or Spinner Karthick will be a good choice.Indian bowling is so weak that Kumble should be recalled to boost it up. He is still better than our current bowlers even in retirement. The best hope for India is to compile a huge total and hope SL batsmen make mistakes to give away their wickets. Clearly the current Indian bowling attack is the weakest India ever had in past 2 decades.The Indian performance against the Presidents 11 Proves how weak the Indian bowling is. Can India compete as a world power with such weak bowling. Selectors wake up and run several bowling camps to build up the talent through coaching.
