Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan fast bowler, has been rested from the second Test against India beginning in Colombo on July 26. Malinga was one of the architects of Sri Lanka's ten-wicket win in Galle but will miss out at the SSC because of "stiffness in his knee". He will be replaced by Dilhara Fernando, while spinner Ajantha Mendis also returned to the squad.

Aravinda de Silva, the chairman of selectors, said Malinga was rested on the advice of team physiotherapist Tommy Simsek after the bowler complained of stiffness in his dodgy right knee, which had kept him out of Test cricket for 30 months.

"We have to be cautious with Malinga. He was not feeling quite fit to go through a five-day Test. He complained of stiffness in his knee," de Silva said. "We are closely monitoring Malinga's fitness and we are hopeful he will be fully fit for the third Test starting in ten days time." The third Test starts on August 3 at the P Sara Oval.

Malinga had made his comeback to Test cricket in Galle after a long absence and played a critical role in Sri Lanka's victory by taking 5 for 50 in the second innings. He bowled a total of 30 overs in the match for seven wickets.

The setback to Malinga is a severe blow for Sri Lanka especially since the SSC Test will be their first after Muttiah Muralitharan retired from the format. Malinga and Muralitharan had combined to take 15 of India's 20 wickets in Galle.

Mendis, who had taken 6 for 67 in a practice game against the Indians but was overlooked for the first Test, is likely to take Muralitharan's place. The other contender for the spot, offspinner Suraj Randiv, retained his place in the squad.

Following Muralitharan's retirement, former captain Mahela Jayawardene was named vice-captain to Kumar Sangakkara. "We want Mahela, who has a good cricket brain, to be part of the decision-making process in the middle," de Silva said.

Squad: Kumar Sangakkara (capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews, Prasanna Jayawardene, Ajantha Mendis, Dilhara Fernando, Chanaka Welagedara, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Thilina Kandamby, Dammika Prasad, Lahiru Thirimanne, Nuwan Pradeep.

@ Geethike Dinith De Silva LOL ! We know you can't digest the fact that India is No. 1 .... And let me remind you that our strike bowler Zaheer Khan is NOT playing otherwise you know very well what damage he does especially to left-handed batsmen :) With No Malinga, Murli and Zaheer this test should be drawn. And I agree with you that Sanga should play with an extra bowler because with Zaheer NOT playing and Harbhajan out of form any one can score against inexperienced Indian bowling on dead pitches :). And I think Dravid, Laxman, Sachin and Yuvraj were playing international Cricket after a long gap of 4-5 months, I'm sure in the upcoming matches they will make your bowlers sweat be it Malinga or Mendis.

all those cric fanatics should not forget,it is natural quality of indian to play 1st test less seriously,u can enquire by looking their records, they will definately bounce back in the next match,if not win they will fefinately level d series, giving their batting line up and murali malinga absence. we not lost d earlier match just becose we not won d toss, but because our bowlers not performed upto their expectation, hope them fire in next match..........ind will definately win d next match.

WOW i would simply say gud bye to malinga's career. I think the bowling angle should be revised and must be committed itself to the orthodox angle. The angle he n f edwards is bowling from are absolutely rubbish n pity is that the ICC even encourages to bowl an underarm ball without stopping n twisting the handflow. If there is a rule for the game, what ever the situation we must follow it. There musn't be any more excuses for the partial handicapped people in regular world cricket. Anyway this is a gud sign for INDIA to play some classic and gud bowlers. Hope srilankans won't get another player with the similar bowling angle r even with the abnormal wrist postion.

The one to replace Malinga should be Prasad. No doubts about that. In fact, it should have been Malinga and Prasad in the first match too. Welegedera was too wayward and got two wickets just because of Sehwag's reckless batting. Still, I'm not sure whether Prasad and Welegedera can combine well to give the Indian batting line up a scare. If one fails, Nuwan Pradeep should be given the nod for the third Test. As far as the Indians are concerned, this is a golden chance to draw the match at least.

This is real bonus for India.First with the exit of the Legend and now with the injury woe to this slinging assassin who has been in great form. This will open door for a Fernando who hasn't played much Test for SL in the last 24 months, so it should be an advantage to India as they will be playing a B Grade bowling line up of SL.Having said that, its not at all mandatory that they will be bowling like "B Graders" though. They both are quality bowlers and they will look to cement their places in the side with every opportunity they get, so India already being 1-0 down shouldn't be complacent with the fact that SL team looks a little weak because that itself will make them weaker. India must make one change, bring in Amit Mishra for Ojha, a wrist spinner will be more useful on these tracks with the extra bounce and more side spin that he can offer on these slow tracks. But with this injury, i think this test match looks good for India to square the series :)

what I have observed is that someone reties or pickup an injury the replacement is performing much better and it's very hard to replace the replacement. I see much more to come than less. e.g. thisara for anjelo i see india more down the barrel with the school boy bowling attack.

I dont think it will not make any difference to India. The only problem at the moment is their bowling line up. India would have failed in their batting in the 1st Test, but its the quality batting line up where they will surely bounce back. Now we have to worry about their bowling line up where they have conceded 500+ in the 1st Innings.Ishant Sharma & Mithun are not doing well. Taking 3-4 Wickets in a Match where the opposition has scored 500+ runs is not a big thing. And even Harbhajan & Ojha has failed miserably in the 1st Test. I think they will go with Amit Mishra instead of Ojha in 2nd Test. ALL THE BEST FOR INDIA.
