Extended second session this. Not very sure how much more time to tea. Kanishkaa is off for his lunch, and this is Nitin Sundar taking over the ball-by-ball commentary. Sanga is one run away from a brilliant ton. Ishant comes on.

56.1

Sharma to Paranavitana, (no ball) 1 run, and he starts with a limp offering on the hips, and it's a no ball. Paranavitana turns the strike over and Sanga is on strike

56.1

Sharma to Sangakkara, 1 run, well played Sanga! Another ball on the pads, Sanga gladly tucks it square and raises his arms as he runs across. Century against an average attack, but a fine innings all the same

56.2

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, Ishant gets it on the money this time, defended off the backfoot down the track

56.3

Sharma to Paranavitana, FOUR, cut away in the air and perilously close to Laxman at gully who is clearly late on it as it flies over his head

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, 136 kph on leg stump and going slightly across, defended down the track towards the off side

56.5

Sharma to Paranavitana, 1 run, on the pads.. for the third time this over, Ishant has given an easy single ball and the left-hander obliges once again

56.6

Sharma to Sangakkara, no run, this time full on the pads, asking to be hammered. Sanga will be disappointed he could not elude midwicket with thet crisply timed flick

End of over 57 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 225/1

57.1

Ojha to Paranavitana, 2 runs, looped up on off and it turns sharply, as he looks to flick, hint of inside edge behind square

57.2

Ojha to Paranavitana, 1 run, gets well inside the line and turns it away behind square for another single

57.3

Ojha to Sangakkara, no run

57.4

Ojha to Sangakkara, no run, hint of drift towards middle stump, Sanga negotiates it safely off the front foot

57.5

Ojha to Sangakkara, no run, nice variation, shortens the length and decieves Sanga who is caught amidships looking to defend outside off, and plays inside the line

57.6

Ojha to Sangakkara, no run, looks for an expansive sweep from outside off. Just as well that he made no contact.

That is belatedly tea on day one. Sri Lanka have ground India's nose tellingly into the dust in this second session and now nothing short of 500 will do. India have this habit of roaring back in the third session, though admittedly that tends to happen at home, and invariably involves a fiery resurgence from Harbhajan Singh. Given his fitness levels, that does not seem likely. Join us at 3.30pm local time for the final session.

End of over 58 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 228/1

Ushering in the final session with a very cynical comment (I hope?) from Krishna: "These matches are not important, atleast I pray they all should be ready by IPL-4." 32 overs to be bowled in the final session. Let's see if light holds up for that long.

A heart-warming comment from Andrew Cowell. About cricket, and about much more. "Hi guys, I am an Englishman now living in Australia, watching Sri Lanka play India and having just seen Australia play Pakistan in, er, England!! - confusing, eh? Anyway, on a more prosaic matter, you can only but marvel at the work put into what was such as devastated area in and around Galle after the destructive tsunami only half a dozen years ago. So many of us live such easy lives with all sorts of creature comforts. We should never forget, however, those of us less fortunate and in seeing test cricket once again at such a beautiful ground is truly a wonderful sight."

Ishant has the ball. Can he redeem what's been a very average day so far? Paranavitana eyes his first Test ton.

58.1

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, pitched up outside off, Paranavitana leans into the drive and plays it gently to mid off

58.2

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, shifts the line marginally outside off on a driving length. There is a slip in place, but Paranavitana lets it go

58.3

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, slightly shorter and marginally wider outside off. He lets it go

58.4

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, this time Paranavitana pulls out a drive and it is fielded very well by a diving Raina at short cover.

Harbhajan is off the field by the way, which explains Raina's presence.

58.5

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, on the off stump and going across, batsman gets forward and defends

58.6

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, another one outside off, a rare over full of control from Ishant, and a rare one without conceding fours. Paranavitana shoulders arms outside off

Sehwag to bowl.

60.3

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, better lines, from outside leg and Paranavitana cautiously defends off the back foot

60.4

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, jaffa from Ishant. That leg cutter is not as consistent as it used to be, or as venomous, but it was good enough to cut Paranavitana in half. Steepling bounce from a length and it thuds into Paranavitana's mid-section

60.5

Sharma to Paranavitana, 2 runs, century to Paranavitana and what a celebration! That was outside off, he opened his face and ran it down behind square. He scrambles back for the second, squeals, screams, pumps his fists and runs almost all the way to the boundary. He's thrilled! Well played.

3.18pm: It's official. Play has been called off. On this pitch, it looks hard to get a result with an entire day's play lost. Murali will be praying for sunshine tomorrow, I can assure you that!

So it will be another early start tomorrow, so do log in at 9.30 am local time. Thanks for your company today. We'll see you tomorrow. Cheers!

2.50pm: Moving aside from India and Sri Lanka, Cricinfo has a live chat in progress on England being the new home of Pakistan cricket. Osman Samiuddin and Andrew Miller invite questions from you. Click here and chat away.

2.30pm: The rain has stopped but the covers are still on. No word yet on the inspection.

2.15pm: Speak of the devil. It's raining again!

2.13pm: It's getting overcast again and the covers are back on purely as a precautionary measure, in case it rains again. Looks like the 2.30 inspection will happen for now.

1.50pm Update. There will be an inspection at 2.30pm.

1.40pm: Better news now. The sun's finally made an appearance and the covers are being removed. The stumps are being erected. Official word should be out soon. Stay with us.

The umpires are walking out. Could this be an inspection?

1.10pm: The rain has stopped and the covers are coming off. Expect another wait as the outfield is still soaked.

12.00pm: We've lost an entire session. We will update you as and when we receive word.

11.35: Just saw some live pictures and there's not a patch of green in sight. The covers are everywhere. Doesn't look like the rain has stopped. We'll be very very lucky to get any action today. No official word yet from the umpires.

11.10am: Lots of mails criticising the scheduling of this game. Here's a sample.

Mevan: "The TV commentator did not get it right when he said that we were at the tail end of the monsoon. In fact, July is peak monsoon in Sri Lanka - rains throughout the month; as it should. Sri Lanka cricket was so excited by the money, that they forgot this little detail! Cricket can only be played at Dambulla and perhaps Pallekele at this time of the year- and at Hambantota when the new ground is ready. SLC in their wisdom, has scheduled all 3 matches - Galle and Colombo - in the wet zone. You can expect all three matches to be rained off. Some of you may remember that a match was played with India in July - was it 1993? - under Azharuddin, at Kandy. If I remember, they were only able to play 30 minutes for the entire 5 days. I believe that this was an all time test record."

10.40am Sorry chaps. It's pouring again. The picture looks pretty bleak at the moment.

10.30am: The rain has stopped but it's still rather gloomy. The covers remain.

10.17am: The three words you didn't want to hear - It is raining! Yes, another drizzle and the covers are back on.

Raghuvir Konanki, from Bangalore, has had enough of the rain: "Can this story (read - match) proceed further please?"

Balu: "I guess even the rain gods are fed up with endless India vs. SL ties."

9.50am: About a quarter of the ground is under the covers. It still looks overcast though.

9.15am: Good morning everybody. Let's go straight to an update on the weather. The covers are on at Galle and according to the curator Jayananda Warnaweera, play may begin only after lunch.

The good news is it's not raining at the moment. Whatever it is, we're in for a big delay. The bright side? Less distraction at work! You might as well schedule those meetings now.

Vishal: "Not only is the match delayed, but the stick cricket server is down as well. If the ICC cared about cricket fans, it'd be solving these kinds of dilemmas."

In the meantime, you can Sidharth Monga's reflections on yesterday's play.

-----------------------------------------------------

4.35pm It's stumps, folks. No more play for the day. The light just doesn't seem good enough for the game to continue and there is still some rain around. Sri Lanka have cashed in, with centuries from Sangakkara and Paranavitana, who is still batting. With Jayawardene to give him company, and Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews and Prasanna Jayawardene to follow, things are looking pretty bleak for India at this point. An early start tomorrow, at 9.30am local time, so do join us then. Until then, goodbye.

4.33pm local time Still no official word yet, but the covers are still on and it's pretty dark out there.

Mithun comes on. I wonder if the umpires will think about checking the light now. It is quite dark. In fact just as we thought, light has been taken as opposed to offered to the batsmen. The new change in the playing rules says that umpires cannot offer the light to batsmen or fielders. The umpires need to make a decision and their call is final. In this case, they think light is not good enough and everyone comes off. The covers come on. It is a bit of a pity for Sri Lanka, since they are well on top, but India won't mind this one bit.

10.30am PLAY! Mahela and Paranavitana are walking out. The bails are in place. How are Sri Lanka going to approach this now? They like to bat really big in the first innings, but with so much time lost, they may like to hurry along here. And there is the small matter of giving Murali enough time for a final hurrah. This should be interesting. Mithun has the ball.

10.25am Krishna: "The captains should show guts and go for challenging declarations at least, to make this match lively. Like Stephen Fleming and Steve Waugh did in their test matches. I dont mind India losing a test when they have actually tried to win a Test match."

10.00am The inspection is done and play will begin at 10.30am! This is great news, hopefully we will have Murali bowling at some point of time today, but before that, I also hope to see some of his trademark leaden-footed slogging! Efforts are on to try and get in 95 overs of play in. Light permitting, play can go on until 5.45pm.

Michael Pereira: "Paranativana must be really relieved that he scored his maiden century before the rains came. Can you imagine being stranded on 99* for a whole day?" Word. Butterflies in the tummy and two sleepless nights would have been really tough to handle.

9.40am Here's the latest news: the outfield is still a little wet from yesterday's showers, but things are looking up. There is set to be an inspection at 10.00am local time, and if things remain the way they are now, we should have play by 10.30.

9.28am We have lost 112 overs in this match so far, and in order to make up time play was supposed to start at 9.30am local time, which seems unlikely. If conditions stay the way they are now, we could have a start sometime soon though. The good news is players are out there warming up.

9.10am Drumroll! A warm and dry welcome to Day 3 of the 1st Test. The sun is out, albeit fleetingly. The rain is away for now, though covers are on as a precautionary measure. We are not yet sure if there will be a timely start. Stay tuned for more.

I am Nitin Sundar starting off commentary for today, and Sid Ravindran will take over later.

68.1

Mithun to Paranavitana, no run, ooh, extra bounce from back of a length, beautiful off cutter from Mithun, Paranavitana stayed back and played inside the line

68.2

Mithun to Paranavitana, 1 run, on the pads this time and he tucks it off the backfoot to the leg side for one

68.3

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, regulation ball outside off, short of a length, Mahela shoulders arms

68.4

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, full on the pads and flush on Mahela's pads but it was surely missing leg. Good effort ball from Mithun, beating Mahela for pace as his bat thudded into his boot as he looked to work it to the leg side

68.5

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, on off stump this time and Mahela defends easily down the pitch

68.6

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 runs, strays on the pads again, and this time Mahela perfects the touch off the pads, it purrs away for a couple to square leg

Ishant to bowl the second over. Two slips and a gully for Paranavitana

69.1

Sharma to Paranavitana, no run, not much lateral movement, starts from close to the stumps from over the sticks and keeps it short of a good length. Paranavitana stays back and plays straight

69.2

Sharma to Paranavitana, OUT, jaffa from Ishant and he's sent Paranavitana back. Lovely ball after the previous one, this one angled away just a touch from back of a length. Paranavitana poked at it uncertainly off the backfoot and got a healthy edge, with Dhoni having to dive across to take the catch. After one and a half days of waiting, Paranavitana will be disappointed he could only add one run to his score.

India have struck early here. Can they make more inroads? Samaraweera is the new batsman.

69.3

Sharma to Samaraweera, no run, ooh he's hit him! 134 kph on that bouncer that reared up from just behind back of a length. Samaraweera was taken aback from the lift and ducked as he took his eyes off the ball, and it knocked him on the helmet before ballooning to midwicket

69.4

Sharma to Samaraweera, no run, another bouncer attempted, this time the line is well outside off and Samaraweera handles it more comfortably as he lets it go

69.5

Sharma to Samaraweera, no run, further up this time outside off and Samaraweera was caught on the backfoot but pushed forward to keep it away to the offside

69.6

Sharma to Samaraweera, no run, good ball to finish off, back of a length outside off and moving away. Great start from Ishant today, he's already bowled more good balls than he bowled through all of day one.

DPMD Jayawardene    10* (18b 1x4)      A Mithun    14-2-44-1

70.1

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, Mithun slants another one in from wide of the crease, good contrast to Ishant's ways. Mahela is as always alarmingly late on the glance behind square, but that's the way he plays. Late and lazy elegance, but fully assured

70.2

Mithun to Samaraweera, no run, oh dear, Dravid has dropped a dolly at first slip! Very good ball, bending his back outside the off, that straightened a touch from outside off, Samaraweera fended away without any conviction. The outside edge looped up, stood in air for so long that it was probably too slow for Dravid who dropped it as it came into his lap.

70.3

Mithun to Samaraweera, no run, Samaraweera is struggling here. Good bouncer, and he attempts a totally clueless pull, nearly falling away, and it ballooned towards midwicket, but well short of Yuvraj

70.4

Mithun to Samaraweera, OUT, he's nailed him this time! No need for a fielder if you can do it yourself eh Mithun! It's again that ball of his, which slants in late from outside off. He had Dilshan in trouble with it on day one, and now he's got Samaraweera. It may have hit him marginally outside off, and Hawkeye says it would have clipped the skin off the top of middle stump.

Mathews walks in. India have their tail up. The wicket is surely doing some things after all the rain.

70.5

Mithun to Mathews, FOUR, attempted yorker ends up as an easy fulltoss on the pads and Mathews obliges by on-driving it. Harbhajan at mid on should have cut it off, but he's not doing too well and that tired lunge and fall to his left said the story

70.6

Mithun to Mathews, no run, good bouncer, angles into Mathews and passes over his head as he attempts a pull.. and misses. There was some freak noise around the time the ball passed the bat, but there was more than daylight between the edge and the ball.

71.3

Sharma to Mathews, no run, hits the deck back of a length outside off, Mathews stays back and punches it confidently but straight to mid off

71.4

Sharma to Mathews, no run, whoa! Ishant pitches it well up on middle and leg, and it curves away alarmingly in the air before Mathews gets the bat down on it and plays it to the off side

71.5

Sharma to Mathews, no run, outside off, again just back of a length, Mathews is staying back to read the swing, there is some of it on offer today. He gets bat on it uncertainly, mostly the outside half of the bat

71.6

Sharma to Mathews, no run, wider outside off and Mathews lets it go safely through to Dhoni. Another good over from Ishant.

72.1

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, angled in again from wide of the stumps, this time Mahela gets nicely behind and defends it down the pitch

72.2

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, shot of the morning so far. Mithun attempts another bouncer just outside off, Mahela saw it coming, rode the bounce expertly and then upper cut it without much room, but timed it beautifully and safely above the heads of the slip cordon

72.3

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, another bouncer attempted, starts on off and goes well down the leg. Mahela lets it go easily

72.4

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, sliding down the leg this time, Mahela looks to glance but misses

72.5

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, he's brought the line back to off and middle, it ends up in front of Mahels'a middle stump and he defends with assurance

72.6

Mithun to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a slice of luck for Mahela, that was not short or wide enough for the cut, but he tried to play it away off the backfoot and got an under edge that could have easily landed on the stumps, but it goes away harmlessly towards square leg

73.1

Sharma to Mathews, 1 run, overpitched on the pads and Mathews fails to cash in. Does not place the flick too well and it is cleaned up by deep square leg

73.2

Sharma to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, good ball, 136 kph and he gets it to kick up from back of a length outside off, the kind of delivery that gave Ricky Ponting sleepless nights two summers ago. Mahela judged it well and let it go

73.3

Sharma to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, further up this time, this is very good bowling, 137.5 kph and drawing a reluctant Mahela forward. He was late on it, but managed to play it to the off side

73.4

Sharma to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, in the corridor outside off, Mahela stays back and lets it go

73.5

Sharma to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, timing all the way! Back of a length nowhere near driving length, but Mahela caresses it through the line, fluently down the pitch, straight off the meat and not much of a follow through either. Shot!

73.6

74.2

Mithun to Mathews, no run, this one is fuller and outside off, Mathews gets everything behind it and defends compactly

74.3

Mithun to Mathews, no run, airy bouncer, he's bowled some lovely ones and some average ones so he needs to work on that. That sailed safely down the leg side

74.4

75.2

Sharma to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, hits the deck and angles it in to Mahela at 135 kph, flicked away off the backfoot to square leg

75.3

Sharma to Mathews, no run, he's really bending his back here. 136 kph, kicking up from outside off, Mathews stays back but is hurried into the defensive shot

75.4

Sharma to Mathews, no run, pitched well up this time, and Mathews was adept to push forward and drive it down the line to mid off

75.5

Sharma to Mathews, FOUR, drilled. That was very short outside off, and not near fast enough to trouble Mathews. He picked the length early and pulled it authoritatively in front of square for four. Fully well controlled and all along the ground

77.2

Ojha to DPMD Jayawardene, no run

77.3

Ojha to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, Mahela makes a statement of intent. India have dominated the day so far, but Mahela is not going to let them gain the upper hand. He sashays down the pitch, gets close to the length and lofts it straight down the ground.

Harbhajan Singh to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, fuller this time, straightens from outside off, Mahela defends off the back foot

80.3

Harbhajan Singh to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, whoa, what have we here! Mahela has bottom-edged a sweep onto his pads and it pops into Gambhir's hands at short leg. The quesion is did it bounce en route bat to pad? Umpire Rod Tucker checks with Daryl Harper and they consult the third umpire, and replays reveal it definitely bounced. There was no glove on the way back up either, so Mahela is safe. That was a confident appeal from the Indians, but there is no way they could have known.

Sharma to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, Big appeal for caught behind turned down by Dary Harper. It was a pacy ball outside off, on that nagging length again, Mahela was caught amidships, but played inside the line and there was a loud appeal all around. Good call from Harper.

87.5

Sharma to DPMD Jayawardene, OUT, this time Harper has sent him on his way! Ishant pegs Mahela back again with one of those in-duckers, it rears nastily from off and middle towards leg stump. Mahela misses the attempted flick and is hit in front of middle and leg, a tad high. He was well back, and hawkeye says it would have his the top of leg. Ishant has his reward, this is a wonderful spell ladies and gentlemen.

Shahid: "Note to Cricinfo - Stop spoiling Inception for everyone who haven't yet seen it! " Apologies mate. No more Inception comments. But it is hightime you went and saw that movie.

87.6

Sharma to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, full and fast on middle and leg, Prasanna does well to play it down the track

End of over 88 (1 run) Sri Lanka 322/5
HAPW Jayawardene    0* (1b)      I Sharma    21-5-104-2
AD Mathews    24* (44b 3x4)      A Mithun    19-3-58-2

One Jayawardena goes and another one makes his entry.

88.1

Mithun to Mathews, FOUR, short, but not enough venom in that ouncer. Mathews is starting a foot outside the crease, and was around 3-4 feet down when he pulled that without any problem over midwicket. Good shot.

88.2

Mithun to Mathews, 1 leg bye, hits the deck on middle and off, it finishes on leg, so Mathews is able to work it away for one to turn the strike

88.3

Mithun to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, fuller and wider outside off to the new batsmen. That moved inwards after pitching, Prasanna pushed forward and let it go

88.4

Mithun to HAPW Jayawardene, 2 runs, Prasanna takes on the challenge and pulls the bouncer, without quite getting over the bounce, but there was no one at midwicket to take it and it landed safely

88.5

Mithun to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, good ball angling in from outside off, one of the features of play today has been that India's seamers have given almost NOTHING to drive. Prasanna plays it to the off side

88.6

Mithun to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, nasty bouncer, and having played an unconvincing pull last time, Prasanna reckons he is safer taking a few blows. That hit him hard on the fore-arm, but no harm done

End of over 89 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 329/5
HAPW Jayawardene    2* (5b)      A Mithun    20-3-64-2
AD Mathews    28* (46b 4x4)      I Sharma    21-5-104-2

89.1

Sharma to Mathews, (no ball) FOUR, did we speak too early. That was in the driving length, Mathews got forward and creamed it on the up through the covers. Worse, it was a no-ball, but Mathews would have hit it anyways

89.1

Sharma to Mathews, no run, good return to good habits. Reverts to the neither-here-nor-there length outside off. Played away off the back foot

89.2

Sharma to Mathews, no run, pushes him back once again, Mathews check-drives it into the covers

89.3

Sharma to Mathews, FOUR, Mathews is counter-attacking well here! Pitched up marginally again, and Mathews pounces on it and shows the full face of his blade as he lofts the off drive high over the infield. Authority all over that.

89.4

Sharma to Mathews, 3 runs, shorter outside off, Mathews was expecting the length and ready for it. He slaps it through the vacant cover area and they pick three before Harbhajan runs across

89.5

Sharma to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, another dream ball, McGrathesque one would say, darts away from a length outside off, and does everything except take the outside edge as Prasanna prods uncertainly

89.6

Sharma to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, this one was slightly wider outside off and Prasanna is pleased to face a ball that he does not have to play with bat

End of over 90 (12 runs) Sri Lanka 341/5

90.1

Mithun to Mathews, no run, full outside off, Mathews comes forward and looks to off drive, but not much punch in that shot

90.2

Mithun to Mathews, no run, shorter and wider outside off, Mathews lets it go. Is he shutting shop ahead of lunch?

90.3

Mithun to Mathews, 2 runs, sharp movement inwards, but Mathews is up to the task. He hangs back and glances it down to fine leg

90.4

Mithun to Mathews, no run, shortish ball outside off, Prasanna rides the bounce this time and defends off the back foot

90.5

Mithun to Mathews, no run, another bouncer, Mithun is letting him have it, but the line was awry this time, again ending well down the leg side

90.6

Mithun to Mathews, no run, wide outside off and Prasanna shoulders arms

End of over 91 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 343/5

The Ten Sports coverage just showed footage of a dog that was slipping and sliding on the wet covers yesterday, in slow motion. Hilarious and spectacular at the same time!

91.1

Sharma to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, that's slipped well down the leg and Dhoni moves across to save it

91.2

Sharma to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, moves the line outside off and Prasanna lets it go comfortably

91.3

Sharma to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, bangs it in short this time, but it's well outside off and it's an easy leave. India should make these batsmen play more before lunch.

91.4

Sharma to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, again well outside off, an easy leave for the batsman after getting forward

91.5

Sharma to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 run, over-compensation, this one is faster, 137 kph on the pads though and it is flicked square easily for a brace

91.6

Sharma to Mathews, OUT, Ishant nips out one more! Mathews is gone, after exhibiting great restraint in the last couple of overs, this time he hangs his bat at one outside off. It flies off the outside edge to the right of VVS Laxman at second slip, who tumbled to his right and takes a smart catch. Ishant! What a spell! Respect!

Bhajji comes on.

92.1

Harbhajan Singh to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, Flighted outside off and turning in, misses the cut shot. Just as well.

92.2

Harbhajan Singh to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, this one is flighted on middle and Prasanna sweeps it away with disdain, he's not playing for lunch is he? Through to the midwicket boundary quickly

92.3

Harbhajan Singh to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, ooh, outside edge from round the wickets, that straightened outside off and ran away quickly to the third man fence. You wouldn't believe that this field has taken so much of rain recently, that just flew away

92.4

Harbhajan Singh to HAPW Jayawardene, 2 runs, full on middle again, paddled very fine and easily for a couple

92.5

Harbhajan Singh to HAPW Jayawardene, SIX, Prasanna seems to be playing like this is the last over of an T20 innings, not the last over before lunch! Slog sweep from outside off, and it lands well beyond midwicket for the first six of the match

92.6

Harbhajan Singh to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 run, Bhajji shortens the length to cut his losses, Prasanna stays back and nudges it behind square for one to end a superb session of Test cricket.

12.30pm It's been two hours since play began today, but it feels like much lesser. This was worth the wait! Ishant Sharma and Abhimanyu Mithun made the ball talk early on, putting the hosts in a spot, from where Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews fought back in style. Ishant was not done though and bowled his heart out in his second spell, sending back both of them. Plot.. sub-plot; Attack.. counter-attack.. gripping cricket right up to the last over, and despite the loss of so many overs, this match is set up well (provided the rain gods play along). Join us for the second session in 40 minutes, when Siddarth Ravindran will take over commentary duties.

1.05pm Thanks Nitin. We are all set for the start of the second session, the umpires walk out, one of them trips over the boundary rope as he does. Dhoni pulls on his gloves and leads the Indian team out, and the Sri Lankan batsmen follow. Will Prasanna Jayawardene continue to attack as he did in the final over of the previous session?

Abhimanyu Mithun has the ball in hand.
