India in Sri Lanka Test Series - 1st Test

Sri Lanka v India

Sri Lanka won by 10 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

Righto, Sri Lanka have declared during the tea break, so it is another guard of honour for Murali as he takes the field in his last Test, with a bunch of school kids and his team-mates giving the maestro the farewell he deserves. The fireworks go off once again!

As the smoke subsides and the feeling of euphoria settles, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir make their way to the centre with India having a tough challenge ahead of them. Sri Lanka have taken the game away in the second session and now there can only be one winner in this Test. Can India hold on for a draw? Game on! Lasith Malinga will begin proceedings.

0.1

Malinga to Gambhir, 2 runs, steams in on middle and leg from over the stumps, Gambhir quietly tucks it to midwicket to pick two. 142 kph, already the fastest ball of the match so far.

0.2

Malinga to Gambhir, OUT, Gambhir has succumbed! Similar ball from Malinga, a hint of inward movement from off stump towards middle and leg, Gambhir seemed to fall over as he tried to flick. He misses and is caught plumb in front of the stumps, but has himself to blame here, trying to play across the line before getting his eye in. Sri Lanka have struck a huge blow here and Malinga's wonderful comeback to Test cricket continues!

G Gambhir lbw b Malinga 2 (2m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Rahul Dravid walks out to the middle. He had a forgettable time in the field, can he make up with the bat?

0.3

Malinga to Dravid, no run, fast and furious! Away swinger outside off, Dravid was nowhere near playing that, not that he would have wanted to.

0.4

Malinga to Dravid, no run, another fast delivery, slightly shorter and moving away from middle and off, Dravid gets behind the line and defends, that hit his bat very high

0.5

Malinga to Dravid, 1 run, full on off stump, Dravid's not getting fully forward yet, but he manages to play it away to the covers

0.6

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, 145 kph to finish the over, Sehwag keeps out the attempted yorker outside off. India have been jolted early here!

End of over 1 (3 runs) India 3/1
V Sehwag    0* (1b)      SL Malinga    1-0-3-1
R Dravid    1* (3b)

Welegedara to bowl the second over, from round the wickets.

1.1

Welegedara to Dravid, 1 run, full and straightening from middle stump, Dravid spots the movement and plays it to the off side for one

1.2

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, over-pitched on middle stump, Sehwag deals with it in calm fashion. Forward defensive down the pitch

1.3

Welegedara to Sehwag, FOUR, marginally off-target, and Sehwag cashes in. This one finished on Sehwag's pads and he flicked it away without fuss behind square for the first four of the innings

Two slips and a gully in place.

1.4

Welegedara to Sehwag, 1 no ball, back of a length outside off and Sehwag goes for the booming cover drive, he does not middle it. It was a no-ball as well

1.4

Welegedara to Sehwag, 1 no ball, carbon copy of the previous ball, right down to the over-stepping. Sehwag stayed back and defended this time

1.4

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, straighter, angles into Sehwag from middle stump and he works it off the hips to midwicket

1.5

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, late swing from Welegedara. Pitched well up on middle stump and it tailed in drastically. Sehwag was up to it, and droove hard down the ground, for Welegedara to stop with his boot

1.6

Welegedara to Sehwag, FOUR, and he finishes off offering just enough room outside off for Sehwag to go after it. He plays the cut despite not having much room to work with and gets a thickish outside edge behind square for four more

End of over 2 (11 runs) India 14/1
V Sehwag    8* (8b 2x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    1-0-11-0
R Dravid    2* (4b)      SL Malinga    1-0-3-1

2.1

Malinga to Dravid, no run, outside the line of off stump and safe enough for Dravid to leave alone

2.2

Malinga to Dravid, (no ball) 1 run, the no-ball epidemic seems to be catching on. Malinga oversteps this time. It is short and into Dravid's body, he easily taps it dpwn to the on side for one

2.2

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, 139 kph and back of a length outside off, again width on offer and Sehwag creams the backfoot cover-drive but can't elude the cover fielder

2.3

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, nice bouncer at very good pace, brings the short leg into play, but Sehwag is compact as he goes back and defends it straight down into the ground on the leg side

2.4

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, another one, very well-directed bouncer giving Sehwag no room to work with, these are aimed straight at the body and Sehwag focuses on keeping it down and safe

2.5

Malinga to Sehwag, 1 no ball, and another one. One too many for the over and it is called no-ball. This one took off and Sehwag ducked under it... just about. It sailed close to his helmet

2.5

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, and again. Malinga is creating a length of his own here, another bouncer this time the direction is a little wayward, it is outside off and Sehwag easily lets it go

2.6

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, you guessed right, short one to finish off, at 141.5 kph outside off. Sehwag gets over the bounce and defends well to the off side

End of over 3 (3 runs) India 17/1
V Sehwag    8* (14b 2x4)      SL Malinga    2-0-6-1
R Dravid    3* (6b)      UWMBCA Welegedara    1-0-11-0

3.1

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, this one goes straight on from over the sticks, Dravid hangs back in his castle and defends to the off side

3.2

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, full on off stump, Dravid is drawn forward into the defensive

3.3

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, text-book high elbow backfoot defensive 101 from Dravid. He stays back and plays it dtraight into the pitch

3.4

Welegedara to Dravid, FOUR, enough width and short enough in length for the cut. Dravid obliges by getting back and across and square-cutting for his first four

Welegedara comes over the wickets

3.5

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, angled into Dravid from wide of the stumps, he stays back and defends it softly

3.6

Welegedara to Dravid, no run, effort ball - bouncer to finish, but it angles in and sails harmlessly down the legside

End of over 4 (4 runs) India 21/1
R Dravid    7* (12b 1x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    2-0-15-0
V Sehwag    8* (14b 2x4)      SL Malinga    2-0-6-1

4.1

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, more short stuff from Malinga to Sehwag, this is a definite plan to keep him quiet. Sehwag hangs back and defends to the off side

4.2

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, and again, you can almost expect it now. Short and outside off, Sehwag crouches, rises and then weaves away. Expect a yorker sometime soon.

4.3

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, ooh, another one angled into the body and Sehwag is not entirely in control as it pops off the splice towards where short leg would have been. Leg gully is standing a few yards back and it lands safely

4.4

Malinga to Sehwag, 1 run, attempts a slow yorker, but loses the length and it is a full toss on the pads, Sehwag glances it behind square for a single

4.5

Malinga to Dravid, 1 run, another short ball, into Dravid this time who plays it down to the ground with purpose and takes a single behind square on the leg side

4.6

Malinga to Sehwag, FOUR, Sehwag throws everything at that and gets four for his efforts. It was full outside off, but Sehwag was well in the crease expecting more short stuff, he went at it without feet movement, and ended up playing it airily but safe behind square. Samaraweera ran across from deep point and put in a dive, but missed the ball and seems to have injured his left hand. He is out of the field for now.

End of over 5 (6 runs) India 27/1
V Sehwag    13* (19b 3x4)      SL Malinga    3-0-12-1
R Dravid    8* (13b 1x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    2-0-15-0

5.1

Welegedara to Dravid, 1 run, angled into Dravid's pads again, and he easily works it to deep square leg to turn the strike

Back to over the wickets for Sehwag.

5.2

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, drops it on a length and angles it across Sehwag who moves forward but lets it go

5.3

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, slightly fuller and there to be driven, Sehwag punches it well down the ground but Murali makes a good tumbling save at mid off

5.4

Welegedara to Sehwag, 1 no ball, whoa, a no-ball there so Sehwag was safe despite outside-edging it, as it swung in from outside off. The edge fell just short of first slip

5.4

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, pitched further up outside off, Sehwag goes for the cover drive but can't find the gap

5.5

Welegedara to Sehwag, FOUR, Slam. That was very wide outside off and too full. Sehwag did not move towards it and he did not have to, playing through the line and cracking it along the ground through the covers. Zero for footwork, but 100 for balance.

5.6

Welegedara to Sehwag, FOUR, educated edge outside the off stump, Sehwag opened the face and steered that between the slips and gully for another four

End of over 6 (10 runs) India 37/1
V Sehwag    21* (25b 5x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    3-0-25-0
R Dravid    9* (14b 1x4)      SL Malinga    3-0-12-1

6.1

Malinga to Dravid, no run, That's how the bouncer is done! Dravid was neither here nor there, caught on the hop and then looking to duck as it sailed alarmingly close to his head

6.2

Malinga to Dravid, no run, further up, and Dravid comes forward belatedly to defend to the offside

6.3

Malinga to Dravid, no run, this one is further wide of off stump, Dravid shoulders arms and keeps the three waiting slips out of play

6.4

Malinga to Dravid, no run, pitched up this time close to off stump, Dravid plays it into the covers

6.5

Malinga to Dravid, 1 run, banged in short angled into Dravid's body and he taps it down towards midwicket to turn the strike over

6.6

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, length ball outside off, Sehwag should have been driving off the front foot, but the bouncers are working on his mind, he ends up punching it from backfoot

End of over 7 (1 run) India 38/1
V Sehwag    21* (26b 5x4)      SL Malinga    4-0-13-1
R Dravid    10* (19b 1x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    3-0-25-0

7.1

Welegedara to Dravid, 1 run, over-pitched and going down the leg, Dravid glances it behind square for one.

Many comments asking about the follow on target. It is 320, the rules have not been changed due to rain. It would have been if the whole if day one had been lost to rain. This is however not the case here.

7.2

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, angled across Sehwag and he lets it go

7.3

Welegedara to Sehwag, FOUR, over-pitching to Sehwag on off stump is asking for trouble and Welegedara finds out the hard way. Smoked down the ground between the bowler and mid off for four.

Welegedara has so far been a letdown.

Shifts to round the sticks now.

7.4

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, and Sehwag nearly gifts Welegedara for his efforts, for changing the angle. Goes for a wafty airy drive outside off without having the line, length or footwork. Misses the edge

7.5

Welegedara to Sehwag, no run, better this time, he stays back and defends the back of length ball down the pitch

7.6

Welegedara to Sehwag, FOUR, wide outside off, wide enough for Sehwag to tuck in greedily. He cuts it square and it races past the outfield in a trice. Good recovery by India after losing Gambhir early

End of over 8 (9 runs) India 47/1
V Sehwag    29* (31b 7x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    4-0-34-0
R Dravid    11* (20b 1x4)      SL Malinga    4-0-13-1

Adding on the previous point about the follow on mark. IF the whole of day one had indeed been lost to rain, the difference would have been 150 as opposed to 200 in calculating follow on targets.

8.1

Malinga to Dravid, 2 runs, smoking guns! Fast and swinging yorkers that was destined to crash into Dravid's toes and he was on the hop as he dug it out at the last moment

8.2

Malinga to Dravid, no run, follows up the yorker with a good short one outside off, but Dravid was ready for it, rising on his toes and playing it down

8.3

Malinga to Dravid, 1 run, on Dravid's hips and he taps it down to midwicket to pick one

8.4

8.5

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, he tries the two-card trick this time, pitched well up at 142 kph and Sehwag was not entirely forward, but managed to squeeze the drive wide of mid on

8.6

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, short one to finish off, outside off, Sehwag rides the bounce and keeps it down to the off side

End of over 9 (3 runs) India 50/1
V Sehwag    29* (34b 7x4)      SL Malinga    5-0-16-1
R Dravid    14* (23b 1x4)      UWMBCA Welegedara    4-0-34-0

Spin for the first time in the innings. Herath comes on.. not Murali, sorry.

9.1

Herath to Dravid, no run, pitched up outside off, Dravid presses forward and smothers the turn

Slip and short leg in place

9.2

Herath to Dravid, 3 runs, short and just wide of off stump, Dravid presses back and cuts in front of square. Randiv tags it well and saves a single with a valiant dive at the fence

9.3

Herath to Sehwag, FOUR, well, this time Randiv can't do much about it. Width to Sehwag and he's mowed it through the covers without bothering about the trifles of footwork

9.4

Herath to Sehwag, no run, hint of drift this time and it finishes on leg, Sehwag defends to the leg side

9.5

Herath to Sehwag, FOUR, classy from Sehwag, he trots out of the crease, gets to the pitch and wrists it away between midwicket and mid on

9.6

Herath to Sehwag, no run, lovely finish from Herath who puts in effort and shortens the length to beat Sehwag's bat and spin right across the face as he looked to drive to the off side

End of over 10 (11 runs) India 61/1
V Sehwag    37* (38b 9x4)      HMRKB Herath    1-0-11-0

Angelo Mathews comes on. The wait for Murali just got bigger! Two slips and a gully.

10.1

Mathews to Dravid, no run, loosener at 117.6 kph doled up outside off, Dravid does not want anything to do with it

10.2

Mathews to Dravid, 1 run, lucky! Mathews cranks it up marginally and shortens the length, might have moved in a touch as well as Dravid though of cutting away. The under edge missed the stumps, but not by much

10.3

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, this time he takes it away from Sehwag. Starts it from well outside off, so he lets it go without issues

10.4

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, comes in from much closer to the stumps this time, Sehwag is cramped as he looks to cut and can't elude point

10.5

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, back of a length ball at 127 kph, Sehwag stays back and defends down the pitch

10.6

Mathews to Sehwag, no run, pitched up, 126 kph and Sehwag plays the forward defensive back to Mathews.

R Dravid    18* (27b 1x4)      HMRKB Herath    1-0-11-0

Drinks are being taken. India have stabilised well after the loss of Gambhir. The light is not the best out there, so we may not have a full hour and some to go before stumps. So far so good.

11.1

Herath to Dravid, no run, tossed up outside off, Dravid looks at it and lets it go

11.2

Herath to Dravid, no run, Dravid goes for the cut, and is nearly pinned by a fine armer, but manages to keep it out to the off side

11.4

Herath to Dravid, no run, another big spinning delivery, comes in with the angle on to leg stump and then turns away, Dravid plays it away off the backfoot

11.5

Herath to Dravid, no run, shorter again, Dravid thinks of cutting but is not sure which way it will turn. It is the orthodox delivery and he taps it to the off side eventually

11.6

Herath to Dravid, no run, full on middle and leg, Dravid leans forward and defends. Great over this.

End of over 12 (maiden) India 62/1

12.1

Mathews to Sehwag, 1 wide, ah, attempted bouncer from Mathews, who got carried away and banged it in really short, it was called a wide

12.1

Mathews to Sehwag, FOUR, not too short this time, but short enough for Sehwag to play a forceful pull despite not getting over it. It hit the splice and bobbled away safely through midwicket for four

12.2

Mathews to Sehwag, 1 run, OUT, Dravid has got himself out here trying to run a totally needless second! Sehwag drove to mid off and they took off for a quick single. Malinga misfielded and Dravid belatedly decided to take a second one, but was caught well short at the non-striker's end. Huge and unnecessary loss for India here! Fatal error in judgement and Dravid is distraught. He should be. He was late on the decision to run two, and could have done away with it altogether.

R Dravid run out 18 (64m 33b 1x4 0x6) SR: 54.54

20.1

Muralitharan to Sehwag, FOUR, Sehwag is trying to dominate Murali and so far it is working. That was short from Murali but it got big on Sehwag who was smart enough to wait on it and guide it square for four

20.2

Muralitharan to Sehwag, 1 run, similar ball, this time Sehwag can't quite time the cut shot

20.3

Muralitharan to Tendulkar, FOUR, Exquisite from SRT! That was turning in sharply, he stayed back and cut it from leg stump between cover and point. Randiv could have saved that at the boundary but he dived a little too early and it ran away from him.

20.4

Muralitharan to Tendulkar, OUT, Murali moves to 793 and what a wicket to pick! Full on middle, Sachin went for the sweep and missed it, there was not much turn and it would have hit the top of middle and leg. Sachin is gone and India are in come strife here.

Day 3, 6.07pm And finally, the light meters are coming out. Light has faded and it is stumps on a fascinating day three. It was well worth the wait after a frustrating second day when nothing happened. Today the rains stayed away and allowed the plots and sub-plots to emerge in full colour. Sri Lanka were rocked early by India's seamers before the sun came out and the hosts counterattacked in style. They built a big score and declared at tea. India will be gutted at having lost three wickets, but Sehwag is still out there and looking very good. Laxman got into the groove as well towards the end, and the way these guys shape up tomorrow against Murali and co. will make for more fascinating viewing. Here's hoping for good weather tomorrow as well. It is an early start again on day four, so join us at 9.30am local time. Until then, on behalf of Sid Ravindran and the rest of the team, this is Nitin Sundar signing off. Do catch the bulletin from Sriram Veera which will be up in a moment, and news from the centre of action courtesy Sid Monga. Cheers!

The players are out. Herath to finish the over

9.30am: They haven't started yet. No worries. Play should begin soon. Bright sunshine at the venue. It's confirmed now. It's a 9.45 start. 98 overs to be bowled, lunch will be taken at 12 noon, tea at 2.55pm, stumps at 5.15pm.

The pitch experts feel the ball will turn a lot more from today. That means India will have to be a bit careful and not get carried away.

Day 4: Good morning everybody and welcome to the coverage of day four. No covers and rain around yet, so we should start on time. Only India can mess it up from here on. The pitch is still good to make loads of runs and they will be relieved at the way Sehwag took control yesterday. It's a new day and the players are fresh.
