Kumar Sangakkara gets his finger examined by the physiotherapist after being struck by an Ashok Dinda delivery, Sri Lanka v India, 3rd ODI, Colombo, July 28, 2012

Kumar Sangakkara has been ruled out of cricket for four to six weeks after fracturing his finger during the third ODI against India in Colombo. The injury has put doubts on Sangakkara's participation in the inaugural season of the Sri Lanka Premier League that starts on August 11, apart from missing the remaining two ODIs against India.

Sangakkara had scored 23 runs when he was hit by a quick Ashok Dinda bouncer in the fifteenth over of Sri Lanka's innings. He went on to score another 50 runs and pulled Sri Lanka from a precarious 20 for 3 to safety after a 121-run stand with captain Mahela Jayawardene. After eventually getting out to Dinda, Sangakkara was sent for a scan that confirmed the fracture.

The news will come as a blow to Sangakkara's SLPL franchise Kandurata Warriors, for whom he has been appointed the captain. Kandurata are scheduled to play their first match on August 11.

Kapu should bat at No 3. We need FLAT PITCH KINGS like Kapu coming at No 3 and hammer around the ground. All Indian batters are FLAT PITCH KINGS. We also need few KINGS rather than test batsmen. Hope SL can win next 2 games to win the FLAT PITCH KING TROPHY !!!!!

from a sri lankan fan's point of view i would like to request from both country fans not to attack at each other. i don't see a point behind we attacking each other about the best team among us! definitely TEAM India is a good team and it has been playing good cricket- we sri lankans ( majority of us ) are aware of this and also the srilankan team is also a fairly better side otherwise we cant finish as wc finalists in two consecutive years. this forum will be interesting if we keep away from critisising the opponents unreasonably. - A SL FAN wishing success for both countries>>> LET US STOP THIS FLAT TRACK BULLIES NONSENSE AND START ENJOYING THE NAIL BITING FINISHES PROVIDED BY BOTH TEAMS>>> CHEERS

Hey do you know? who is the best average player in List A matches in sri lanka, he is tharanga paranavithana, but he is not play any ODI yet, and sri lanka has not any player over 40+ avg in List A (minimum 50 matches) so pls think about him also

Posted by Fast_Track_Bully on (July 30, 2012, 4:35 GMT)

SL may not cross 250 in the remaining matches....there is only one player to watch in SL side now and that is Jayawardhane...BTW, great win by team India yesterday. A new record of chasing in!

Posted by Udendra on (July 30, 2012, 4:02 GMT)

who cares SLPL? sanga, get well for World T20. that is what's important!

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 21:22 GMT)

stop talking abt bhanuka? we all know he's talented but where is runs? he got lots of lots of chances in A side and he ruined it all, talent alone wont earn u a place in the national team, u need the runs to go with it , i dont see bhanuka playing for sl in next 2 years, dimuth karunayake did well in SA,, we should give him a chance,,

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 14:40 GMT)

Bhanuka Should Given a Chance!! He Is a Great Young Talent For Us!!

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 13:22 GMT)

Sangakara will not play SLPL T20 2012 so who will be the captain of his team. I guess Misbah ul Haq will lead his team in SLPL T20 2012 next month.

Posted by Sinhaya on (July 29, 2012, 13:16 GMT)

@Jindal Priyank, it is a blessing in disguise that Sanga got injured. He will retire in 2 or 3 years and worth giving Dimuth Karunaratne a chance or even Lahiru Thirimanne an opportunity to bat at no. 3.

Posted by NUNA_1980 on (July 29, 2012, 11:27 GMT)

@ Mayan get off the T20 mind set, truth is you can't replace Snaga from any one else he is the best ever, simply imagine how well he handle the yesterday after 20/3. Sorry Sanga some stupid people don't know how valuable you are but you are true legend of Sri Lankan cricket, By the way GET WELL SOON sir!!!

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 11:19 GMT)

@rahulkkhh MS Dhoni also does that. see 2nd ODI.

Posted by COOLANKA on (July 29, 2012, 10:58 GMT)

we'll miss sanga so badly, wish you to get well soon and it's time to give a chance to banuka rajapakshe.....

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 10:54 GMT)

@Mayan..i guess you are joking

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 10:33 GMT)

good news, sangakkara very avg odi players, he hardly win us matches in odi's.all he do is help us to win by steadying the inning , bt now cricket has changes, we need a match winner in number 3 spot, and he much have atleast 95% strike rate, specially when u play in sub cont, i think thirimanna is more than capable of taking no 3 spot,, and chandimal need to perform in next two matches,, mahela tactics seems expired tactics,, probably its time to get rid of big 3,with mahela.sanga, dilshan,, we can be a good team, but we cant be the best b coz those 3 players are too avg,, so our performance also avg,,, we need to be the best, not avg,,,

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 10:32 GMT)

AH Too bad for him .. Could have bettered his average that has declined lil bit after playing out of Asia lately

Posted by abyrao on (July 29, 2012, 10:25 GMT)

The injury to Sangakkara is bad luck for Srilanka, but for heavens sake dont get in useless Kapugedara in his place. Give either Thirimanne or anyone worth in SL a chance, but not this good for nothing Kapugedera. There is a similarity between Indias Rohit Sharma, Banglas Ashraful, Englands Bopara and Lankas Kapugedera that is these are proven faliures yet they keep figuring on international circuit.

Posted by warneneverchuck on (July 29, 2012, 9:49 GMT)

Sanga is probably one of very few gentlemen playing in this era. Only batsman who would leave crease bfore umpire's call if he has edged the ball

Posted by NUNA_1980 on (July 29, 2012, 9:46 GMT)

Given chance to Thilan is useless i guess, because he is already 35. Better to open the door for some one like young Dimuth Karunaratne. But I strongly believe Thirimanna shoud be in he is class act, play all around ground and confident player than Chandimal.

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 9:16 GMT)

@ Brdmara: India have been playing without Yuvraj Singh (and Tendulkar too), so I guess its evenly matched contest now. What say ?

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 9:05 GMT)

@ Chamara Lets NOT underestimate Indian bowling attack so much. Even Malinga - World's most feared fast bowler- has poor record against Indian batsmen. In Ind vs SL encounters on flat tracks like that of sub-continent, it is the batsmen who decide the fate of the match, in general. And India just needs to worry about Rohit Sharma (I wish Yuvi was fit !) and SL needs to worry about Sanga, whom everyone wants to see fit for WC T-20.

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 8:50 GMT)

Get well soon Kumar Sangakkara.Wishing you a very speedy recovery.I've been a Sanga fan since 2000 and will Always love & support him.He is a legend in world cricket.Win or lose we are lions!

@Chamara Prasanna You are right dude. IND will never get a BLOWER like Ajmal

Posted by warneneverchuck on (July 29, 2012, 7:43 GMT)

@Chamara. India doesn't have any great bowler like Ajmal. Still they r beating u in yor home

Posted by Aristotle01 on (July 29, 2012, 7:39 GMT)

A huge blow for India.:D:P Lol

Posted by Brdmara on (July 29, 2012, 7:34 GMT)

Posted by cricfan100 on (July 29, 2012, 7:31 GMT)

This is a bad news. But could be a blessing in disguise as well. Now sri lanka should consider a youngster in place of sanga. It is certain that all three big guns will retire soon. So time to bring in a youngster. It will be interesting to see the selection policy of the selectors as to whom they have in thier mind in place of sanga once he retires. You can not have thirimanne or kapu playing there for 3 matches and dropped once sanga comes in. Because both have batted down the order and it won't do them any good by asking them to bat at no 3 only for three matches. In my opinion it should be the player that selectors have in thier mind to replace sanga once he retires. Normally you have those shadow players in place of national players. But with sri lankan selectors you never know what is coming. So I won't be surprised if chamara silva or samaraweera replaces sanga.

Posted by Mahaanama on (July 29, 2012, 6:18 GMT)

@ Sujoth Cherukat: What's wrong with you mate? You said Sanga is not a gentleman right? Haven't you seen he always walks off even before umpire giving him out whenever he got an inside edge. Have you seen that kind of sportsmanship on Sehwag who kicked the ball to the boundary to take no 11 batman at the striker's end though I believe that no-ball shouldn't have been bowled to prevent Sehwag getting his century.By the way I wish Sanga a quick recovery.

Posted by Garretjacks on (July 29, 2012, 6:09 GMT)

I hope they draft in someone like bhanuka rajapakshe and give him a chance instead of kapugedara or chamara silva....

I really cant wait to see bhanuka performing on the international scene!

Posted by priceless1 on (July 29, 2012, 5:33 GMT)

good break for the SL team, to beat India they have to score around 350 but with Sanga comes in at 1 down and batting with a strike rate of around 65-70 they will never gona achieve this , now him out of the Team they have a realistic chance

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 5:28 GMT)

@Venki_indian - the only internationan standard batsman..???? dude you really don know bout our team...

and yeah we really miss sanga.. :( get well soon

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 5:08 GMT)

Should bring Thilan Samaraweera.Yes He is not score runes against PAK.But IND does not have any GREAT blower like Ajmal.

A big blow for lanka this means that samaraweera or thimmane will get a chance but indians will feel really well

Posted by kesy777 on (July 29, 2012, 3:19 GMT)

Huge blow for Lankans. He is their best batsmen and batsman in form. He brings stability 2 da batting line up. SL will struggle in next 2 matches without him for sure. Then Sanga critics will understand his important's. But in a way a break is good for him cz he was playing cricket nonstop. Get well soon Sanga

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 2:56 GMT)

Big blow for Sri Lanka, missing world's best batsman is a blow for any team

Posted by Sinhaya on (July 29, 2012, 2:47 GMT)

@Venki_indian, you are wrong. Are you telling me that Thilan Samaraweera, Thisara Perera, Dinesh Chandimal (has an ODI ton at Lords), Prasanna Jayawardena, Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews are all not international standard batsmen? Come on, surely they are good or great batsmen.

Posted by 9ST9 on (July 29, 2012, 2:34 GMT)

@Venki_indian - im just curios to know how , how do people define "international standard" back in Flat-track land?

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 2:23 GMT)

sangakara is srilankas best batsman and no one currently can replace him. but dont compare him with dravid. sangakara is no gentleman and as the rest of his team lacks sportsman spirit as evident in denying sehwag of a deserved hundred in tri series involving nzl .

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 1:56 GMT)

Big Blowww, we gonna miss you sanga,... get well soon. hope to see you in T20 WC :)

Posted by   on (July 29, 2012, 1:34 GMT)

This is certainly heartbreaking news for the entire nation. However this will now test the team's ability to adjust and perform. I am sure this will now post a huge challenge to the selectors who has be intentionally or unconventionally reluctant to inject young blood to the side. We all know that Mahela, Dilshan and Sanaga and Thilan (Only Test matches) will not be able to play for a long, that is why younger players need to be groomed under them. I am not too sure what SLC's and selectors' long terms plans are. I think it is high time that they reveal their long term plans, if they have any!

Posted by Venki_indian on (July 29, 2012, 0:08 GMT)

Sad to hear Lanka lost their one and only international standard batsman..

Posted by Andre2 on (July 28, 2012, 23:53 GMT)

I agree with Sarath1948 : Sanga's injury is a blessing in disguise because Sanga is NOT a T20 batsman pers e (although he has a huge influence in the dressing rrom) Sri Lanka will be better equipped for the T20 World Cup with stronger big-hitter than Sanga. For me, Sanga is as good for Sri lanka as Dravid was for India : same kind of gentleman, scoring big runs and able to speak clearly and cleverly about the game : Sanga's MCC lecture was as superb as Dravid's Bardman oraison !

Posted by fr600 on (July 28, 2012, 23:37 GMT)

Great news for Indian cricketers and fans.

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (July 28, 2012, 23:32 GMT)

Chandimal is an over hyped cricketer. He can never be like Sanga or Mahela. This is a body blow for Sri Lanka's chances of winning this series. Sanga has pulled them out of trouble many times. Now I can't see anyone else other than Mahela and Dilshan. Angelo Mathews can still prove to be a match winner along with Jeevan Mendis. Tharanga and Chandimal have to be replaced with someone else. Good luck.

Sangakkara you're a gentlemen, one of the most loved and genuine cricketers around. Nice guy. as you can see here there are so many cultures that love you

Very bad news for SL. Though CHandimal is a good replacement, it would have been great to have his solidity in the middle order. He is a classic Dravid-like batsman of SL. Get well soon Sanga!

Posted by   on (July 28, 2012, 21:11 GMT)

This is horrible news! I really love Sanga's batting and wicket keeping and I'm really going to miss him for the rest of the series and the SLPL. Hopefully, he'll be able to play at the World T20 Championship! Get well soon Sanga!

Posted by cricketeria on (July 28, 2012, 20:14 GMT)

Finally. I was getting a little sick of Sangakkara. Anyone else think he's a bit overrated? Chandimal needs more scope. Mathews is playing very well, I think he can be the future captain of SL. But Sanga and Mahela have kind of kept SL down I feel. They are always 80-90% there but rarely blast through and make SL win convincingly. Anyway, get well soon.

Posted by Prem2248 on (July 28, 2012, 17:52 GMT)

This is a blessing in disguise I should say, because we need to groom a promising youngsters such as KhausalSilva, RosenSilva, Angelo Perera,AshenSilva,Bhanuka Rajapaksha,Sachithra Serasinghe,DimuthKarunarathna,GayanManeshan that has total control over their stroke play(as frontline batters). They all have 1st Class Batting Averages around 50, a thing none of the seniors apart from young Mahela, Samaraweera, Mathews and Chandimal. This is the high time to bring all these highly talented youngsters who have been performing well since their young schooldays. There is no way the 3 seniors could be allowed to carry on till 2016, there by jeopardizing the Future of Countries Cricket. By the way the 3 seniors' performances outside the Country are very pathetic to describe here. One may find World class players in dozens if he had created opportunities to quality players such as above who have maintained consistency since the age of 15. (to be CNTD)

@ govs4cricket: Not really ! India has been playing without Yuvraj Singh. I wish Sanga a speedy recovery. This ongoing series is meaningless. World Cricket wants to see Fit Sanag in WC 20. Without him, SL would be incomplete.

Posted by gunnerz on (July 28, 2012, 17:25 GMT)

Now lets how "strong" SL is without Sangakkara. If Jayawerdene flops, I hope they will be able to put up 150 to make the match interesting.
