Irfan replaces injured Vinay Kumar

ESPNcricinfo staff
173

Irfan Pathan, the India allrounder, will join the squad for the Sri Lanka tour after fast bowler Vinay Kumar was ruled out with a hamstring injury. Vinay will be sidelined for three weeks, and will miss the short limited-overs series that starts on July 21.

"Obviously, when I was overlooked initially, I was thinking about what are the areas I needed to work upon and was focussing on my training at the National Cricket Academy," Irfan told PTI.

"I am pretty satisfied with the hours that I have put in at the nets and in the indoor sessions there. After this call-up, the focus will shift to the Lankan series."

Irfan made a comeback to the national squad after almost three years when he was included during West Indies' tour of India in December 2011. Since then, he has played in India's last two ODI series - the Asia Cup in March, where he was preferred over Ravindra Jadeja and the CB series in Australia. He took five wickets, including a four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka, in the three matches during the Asia Cup at an average of 32 and got six wickets in the four he played in Australia. However, neither Irfan nor Jadeja were included in the original squad for the Sri Lanka series, with the emphasis of selections being on specialists rather than allrounders.

"I played 8 ODIs after my comeback and have got 13 wickets. I have scored around 100 runs in the five innings that I have batted. For someone like me, the more I play international matches, the better I will get," he said.

India will play five ODIs and one Twenty20 during the tour which starts with an ODI in Hambantota.

@ Srilankan fans - Indians maybe flat pitch kings.... but we are always on the srilanka.... even in australia srilanka lost to india .... in bangladesh you guys lost too ... pathetic... i expect india would win this series 3-2 or 4-1 ... srilanka has good chances to win this series if it rains .. .D/L rule .. cunning tricks .. luck... Moreover this series will be boring for indian fans... So many matches played between india and srilanka ... and we are really bored of beating srilanka... The tournament would be India vs Pakistan ... eagerly waiting for that epic war... where real lions and tigers clash unlike toothless srilankan lions..

Indian Selectors & BCCI explained India's batting failure was responsible for their Whitewash in Australia both in ODI's + in the Test series. If that is the case, what batting changes have been made in the squad selected for the SL Tour? I see apart from Tendulkar opting out, NONE. Gambhir & Sehwag are still the openers. Kohli, Raina, Rohit Sharma the middle order followed by Dhoni, Irfan, Ashwin + 3 other bowlers. Tiwary & Rehane have been in the squad for at least 3 squads now, mostly warming the bench along with Rahul Sharma. These 3 may still be doing the same job. There is absolutely no change in the batting selected despite the Selectors explaining the Aussie defeats was due to poor batting. I find this very disturbing. If the batsmen fail replace them with new guys. Otherwise we will have a repeat of reckless batting seen in Australia. At the moment the Weak Indian bowling looks stronger than its batting with ZAK, Yadev, Irfan(?), Ashwin & Ojha(?).Result: Anybody's guess!.

  • on July 15, 2012, 11:12 GMT

@EnglishCricket see your team before pointing us....watch for this t20 wc.......you will know who plays better,......

  • on July 15, 2012, 10:58 GMT

There are only 3 players who can play the role of an allrounder, Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan and Iran Pathan. At number 7, you need a batsman who can hit fast bowlers. Jadeja and Yusuf have always struggled against fast bowlers but Irfan can play fast bowlers better than these two. Also next world cup is in Australia where it will b better to have Fast bowling allrounder rather than slow bowling allrounders.

  • akbarbirbal007 on July 15, 2012, 8:15 GMT

Even better they(selectors) should invite SL to play in the ranji and other domestic league matches which they will happily agree. Why have a series in the first place.

  • on July 15, 2012, 6:05 GMT

    Well said @KURUWITA.........lol...

  • on July 15, 2012, 5:44 GMT

After great Kapil Dev,I see Irfan Pathan is best all-rounder but unfortunately, selectors always ignored him. Finally,he got his right.

  • on July 15, 2012, 3:28 GMT

Well, to be honest Irfan is the currently the most valuable allrounder India has right now. He is excellent with both bat and ball if given opportunity at the initial stages. I mean both with the new ball and the power plays when India batting.

  • EnglishCricket on July 14, 2012, 23:19 GMT

hahaha......What is that India's best all-rounder or something?

  • VinodGupte on July 14, 2012, 11:56 GMT

bishen singh bedi would have been a better choice even at this age. he could have bowled twice as fast.

  • on July 14, 2012, 11:29 GMT

@maddy20 have to agree with that comment you made... Pathan better pick anyday and most importantly a genuine all rounder in the indian squad finally!!!

  • on July 14, 2012, 10:05 GMT

Irfan is a good bowler of swing, he have to build his speed more.

  • RajeshNaik on July 14, 2012, 9:59 GMT

That should make Mr.Abhishek Purohit, the quick comment man glad and happy!

  • on July 14, 2012, 8:50 GMT

Where is Varron Areon? What happened to Ishant Sharma? How is Praveen Kumar? Great that Umesh Yadav is in the team. They remind me of Roberts, Holding, Garner & Marshall of WI. Areon, Ishant, Umesh can bowl at 140Km/hr. Ifran & Praveen bowls @ 120 to135Km/hr. GREAT Irfan is back which is his last chance for a comeback. I am sure that he will prove both good with both & ball. Yes Vinay Kumar is too a GREAT bowler his pace is like Madan Lal but sad that he(Vinay) is injured. Even though he gives more runs he must complete his 10 Overs at a stretch do not give him the death overs he will definitely flaw. Players get injured due to the shorter version of the game. They must choose the format in they want to play. Aus use to play Bevan for ODIS & Langer for tests.

  • on July 14, 2012, 7:56 GMT

@Paras Rishi This time you will not feel tired.. Lankans gonna beat India this time..

  • SanjivAwesome on July 14, 2012, 7:23 GMT

Our selectors keep going back to past failures in the desparate hope of winning today. Vinay was their first mediocre choice - please, can we stop calling him a "fast bowler", CricInfo?! Now Pathan. SL are a very good team. I don't feel our selectors have got the right team to face up to them.

  • proudcricketfan on July 14, 2012, 7:04 GMT

good news...pathan is a better option to have in the side than vinay, mainly for his allrounder ability.at the moment,he is the best option available, certainly better than jadeja and his own brother, who is ridiculously inconsistent...though i am not a big pathan fan,he is currenly the best of the so called 'allrounders' we have, and it's a big chance for him to prove himself.all the best :)

  • sanmaha on July 14, 2012, 6:59 GMT

unless irfan increase speed and movement his place in Indian team is uncertain he needs to concerte on his bowling not his batting

  • PrasadDeoorkar06 on July 14, 2012, 6:42 GMT

I guess this is last chance for Irfan to prove..

  • veerakannadiga on July 14, 2012, 5:51 GMT

@abhiyog.ha ha ha ha ha..love you guy.very realistic comments. exactly my thoughts.

  • kshitijheroes on July 14, 2012, 5:49 GMT

@Vilander Have you seen any match in which Umesh yadav has bowled!!! He hardly bowls under 140kmph and has bowled upto 155kmph in australia. And talking of Nuwan kulasekara he hardly goes beyond 135kmph but maintains good line and length with his inswingers and rare out going ones!! Just the problem of maintaining good corridor for indian quickies consistently and they will shatter Srilankan batting order. About Irfan I consider him one of the best allrounders today in cricketing world and he deserves a chance instead of mediocre Vinay kumar.

  • veerakannadiga on July 14, 2012, 5:39 GMT

OMG!!!!! Not Again...Pathan.Why oh why? Is our stock bare??Could well have selected Siddarth Trivedi or Abhimanyu Mithun.Irfan Pathan has time and again proved he is useless. This is a huge step backward in Indian cricket.

  • Biren4u on July 14, 2012, 5:33 GMT

..u have any idea tht so many matches between ind n sl have been playing for last 4 years.. cricket is being made more boring...have u ever watched WI-PAK-NZ triangular series? Or IND-RSA-ENG triagular series? Or even BAN-NZ-IRE triangular series?.. Pls cricket is our religion so v want to see gud matches...

  • on July 14, 2012, 4:23 GMT

india will be beaten by the lankans in this tour.

  • on July 14, 2012, 4:09 GMT

well this is the right time for irfan to show what he is, he is a fast bowler and can bat at numb seven who has test 100 and 83 in limited overs and he has a capability to swing the ball. and don't forget that he have taken a hat-trick vs pak in 2006.. even if he fails in bowling sehwag , raina ,and rohit can finish his 10 overs quota ,while coming to the batting, he have won a match against sl along with his brother ....... finally all the best irfan......

  • on July 14, 2012, 3:35 GMT

Irfan Pathan can't compare with sri lankan allrounders..bcoz sri lnkans has best allrounders in the world now..

  • on July 14, 2012, 0:30 GMT

I am tired of watching Sri Lanka getting beaten by India in the sub-continent every year.

  • maddy20 on July 13, 2012, 23:19 GMT

Vinay Kumar would not make it to the C-team of any other country. Picking him at the expense of the likes of Shammi Ahmed, Ashok Dinda or Bhuvaneshwar Kumar who hit 140 K consistently and bowl a tight line is a cruel joke. Why they like this guy more than the aforementioned more capable bowlers is beyond me!

  • on July 13, 2012, 23:19 GMT

Lol poor Irfan...he got this chance but what's the use? Those pitches in SL are flat, and he will go for plenty of runs, and sit out again for next 4 years.

  • Vilander on July 13, 2012, 22:37 GMT

I think SL will dominate this series, 5-0 on cards. Indian medium pacers liike umesh yadav ishant bowl 120ks sl kula bowls 140 k swinging yorkers.

  • johnathonjosephs on July 13, 2012, 21:59 GMT

I am more scared of Pathan's batting than his bowling. I feel that Sri Lanka will smash these Indian bowlers for many runs, but the main problem is containing India's formidable batting lineup

  • on July 13, 2012, 21:00 GMT

irfan is taken as an all rounder. i agree that he can not find a place in the team as a pure bowler. but he is a very good no. 7 batsman and fielder. he has a test hundred and 83 in one day. he has to be considered as the 5th bowler in the team. in the first 4, we can have 2 spinners and 2 fast bowlers. 5th bowler would be irfan. this gives the team ideal balance of 3 fast bowlers and 2 spinners. if irfan does not complete his quota of 10 overs, it is fine. we have sehwag, rohit and raina as well. their batting average is in 30s which even irfan has. our 5th bowler has to be: irfan + raina + rohit + sehwag.

  • Nayan_Bhuyan on July 13, 2012, 20:15 GMT

Its a right move from the BCCI.. Irfan deserve a place specially in the limited over version.. He is a great talent but BCCI does not use his talent much.. He should have given enough opportunities like any other player.. He is the lone fast bowling all-rounder in the country right now.. Best of Luck to him..

  • MOHDsarfaraz on July 13, 2012, 19:51 GMT

now he get the chance what he realy deserve, its by chance but now he'll show us the swings.he is in form in both bating and bowling, plz select him in playing 11 and see magic what he can actually do,after this series inshah Allah he will be in the team for T20 world cup.vinay kumar is good cricketer but irfan is better then him,, jai hind

  • ashwinkumargousundaragiri on July 13, 2012, 19:19 GMT

I'm not happy to replacing irfan pathan... there are a lot seemers and i ask bcci members that why don't select such a bowler like laxmipathi balaji he is a good seemer and good form.. in last moths pathan didn't form and also done very badly in ipl so i don't understand why they select irfan pathan he didn't diserve it...

  • India_Rules_Everybody on July 13, 2012, 19:11 GMT

This is a good turn of events for India .. India needs an all rounder in the squad and right now Irfan Pathan is the best candidate for it. It would be ideal if he picks up a bit of pace.

  • on July 13, 2012, 19:06 GMT

irfan deserve the place in india team..he iz nt a replacement for poor vinay kumar...even vinoy could nt replace irfan phatan...there is no comparison between the two.

  • SagirParkar on July 13, 2012, 18:49 GMT

@monisammy >> i completely agree with you on that point man... i seriously cannot even think/imagine how the BCCI consider Vinay Kumar to be a 'specialist'.. unless his area of specialism was being useless.. that guy does not have the skill or the temperament to be an international bowler.. even his performances in this years IPL were very ordinary and he gave away heaps of runs in critical situations.. the BCCI should really start looking beyond Vinay Kumar as the third seamer in the team.. his batting and fielding are nothing to boast about either.. by comparison, Irfan's performances have been slightly better than Vinay.. and by merit he would have to be considered ahead of Vinay.. the future for Indian bowling does not look good if VK is the selectors' choice..

  • on July 13, 2012, 18:32 GMT

An easy series for Sri Lanka.India don't have bowlers like Ajmal,Gul Afridi and Hafeez.India has a poor attack.Stronger SL batting will blast India for sure though Indian batting is better than Pak.SL likely to win4-1.If not 3-2.

  • The_Aeroboy on July 13, 2012, 18:21 GMT

  • FairPlayZ on July 13, 2012, 15:27 GMT

Good move by the selectors. Unfortunately Dhoni will make sure this is his last tour with Indian team. If you want evidence please read the article by Sidhart Monga.

    http://www.espncricinfo.com/sri-lanka-v-india-2012/content/story/572331.html#cmnt

Experts from Article:"That statement needs to be seen in the light that Ravindra Jadeja, the preferred allrounder, struggled to bowl well on seamer-friendly pitches and was clearly out of his depth as a batsman at No. 7. So stubborn was Dhoni with this idea that even when Irfan was eventually picked thanks to injuries to others, he was sent in at No. 9, behind R Ashwin. Sure enough, at No. 9, Irfan hit a six crucial to India coming out with a tie."

When Dhoni sat out a game because of an over-rate ban, stand-in captain Virender Sehwag promoted Irfan to No. 7 where he scored an attractive 47 off 34, only for Dhoni to return and demote him to No. 9 again. It was clear that despite the conditions being in Irfan's favour, India were not going.

  • vinuuu on July 13, 2012, 15:08 GMT

@abhiyog. @thebrownie. What are u talking about .. have u ever remembered the pakistan tour who took a hat-trick. Due to injuries and inconsistency he was away from Indian team but he will come back strong and he played a major role in IPlL and last few international matches. Hopefully he will be more permanent from here on in Indian team. He is much far better than Vinay as Irfan can bat and bowl.

He is the best bowling all rounder that the country has and we should exploit his capabilities in the fullest capacity that we can ...but our South Indian board of cricket is more concerned with filling the squad with their respective IPL & Southern teams.....might as well call the team South India What even shocks me is why our media/press never raise these questions to the selecting authority? What are the credentials of Vinay Kumar getting a spot in the squad over Aaron. I am truly unhappy with our selection committee and its time to change them

  • rairatank on July 13, 2012, 14:51 GMT

    God rectified selector's mistake.

  • on July 13, 2012, 14:48 GMT

Blessing in disguise for team India and for Irfan Pathan. He deserves a longer run, only hope of all rounder in our team. We have to invest time in him. He and Ashwin can fill up the all rounder tag and make our team strong.

  • abhiyog on July 13, 2012, 14:47 GMT

India's darren sammy is back, can bat a bit and bowl a bit. Sanga, mahela, dilshan and co will blast irfan out of park like anything, hopefully irfan's carrer will end after this tour and vinay will be back strongly.............

  • g.narsimha on July 13, 2012, 14:35 GMT

Blessing in disguise, now INDIA can go with 5 bowlers as IRFAAN IS A CLASS ALLROUNDER .good sign for INDIA , the blunder by selectors is retified .Vinay kumar is not a international standard bowler , NEHRA , R P are far better OPTIONS than V K .

  • Avas_D_Dev on July 13, 2012, 14:30 GMT

When selectors earlier opted for choosing only the specialists, then they should have stick to their decision and pick a new fast bowler like rookie Sami Ahmed who had a good tour of West Indies being a part of India A this summer...It's very hard for Pathan to succeed in dry subcontinental pitches in Sri Lanka, as mainly he is a swing bowler...

  • on July 13, 2012, 14:25 GMT

Guys, Untill unless we have Dhoni as caption, Vinay kumar and ashwin will not go out from Indian team, even lot of bad perfomance from Vinay, team management is picking him and players like Pathan, Rayudu, Bhaji as sitting in home waiting for the chance which never comes.... Gook luck Irfan....

  • on July 13, 2012, 14:24 GMT

Very good decision. I'm very happy :-) Irfan is an all rounder and he has shown time and again that what he can do with the bat. Sehwag had shown trust in his batting in this years IPL. We don't expect all rounders to bowl in death overs, right? Then, why U give ball to Irfan for death overs? I don't see Matthews, Oram, Pollard etc. bowling in death. He is a good batsman too. In this year's CB series, Irfan played Malinga really well. Irfan's only bad luck is Dhoni doesn't want him in the side... Anyways, good luck to Irfan. We'll always support U :-)

  • gunnerr4life on July 13, 2012, 14:23 GMT

i don't understand why was vinay selected in first place ... I know India doesn't have many good fast bowlers but they can atleast do better than that ... bowlers like , praveen , vinay are not even fast bowlers for me . you should atleast bowl over 85mph to be called a geniune fast bowler ...

  • on July 13, 2012, 14:22 GMT

I think people seem to like Irfan so much is because, he still has a down to earth personality and he plays the game with a lot of passion; which is enjoyable to watch. I hope, he gets selected and performs well. Go India.

  • S.N.Singh on July 13, 2012, 14:06 GMT

I ALWAYS LIKE TO HAVE IRFAN PATHAN IN THE INDIA SIDE IN ALL FORMAT. IN THE 15 MAN TEAM. IRFAN PROVED TO BE A PLAYER TO BAT AT ANY POSITION OVER THE YEARS. HE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BAT IN A POSITION WHEN THEY NEED FAST RUNS. HE CAN ALSO OPEN THE BATTING FROM 1-11. ALTHOUGH HE MUST IN PROVR IN HIS LINE OF BOWLING TO BOWL ECONOMICALLY. S.N.SINGH, USA.

  • on July 13, 2012, 14:06 GMT

Thank God, Vinay Kumar got injured. Else, Inform dilshan and sangakara will terrorize Him

  • on July 13, 2012, 14:04 GMT

Sometimes, team India's selection does not make much sense because it lacks vision for the future. Players who should not be representing team India gets selected on a consistent basis; Jadeja and Vinay. I wonder, who has the final say in regards to team selection; the selectors, board members or the captain! Furthermore, India should be thinking about building a team for the upcoming world cup and also for the test format. They need to select the correct players and build a team with the best available resources. Anyway, it's great to see Irfan back in the fold. Good luck to India and of course Irfan.

  • on July 13, 2012, 13:54 GMT

Irfan Pathan should be a first choice player.

  • Min2_cric on July 13, 2012, 13:53 GMT

  • abhi026 on July 13, 2012, 13:37 GMT

Really a good move but Irfan should have been earlier as first choice over Vinay.I think it's a very good chance for Irfan to show his value.I feel he needs to be given more chances to get the confidence back.He should look to bowl quicker also at around 135 kmph atleast, otherwise there would be no difference between him and vinay.Good luck Irfan!.

  • on July 13, 2012, 12:52 GMT

way to go..indeed a very good decision, dnt knw why they always hope around vinay kumar, who according to me do not meet international skills(x factor) required by any player to to something extraordinary

  • Crazy4cricket40 on July 13, 2012, 12:52 GMT

well feel bad for vinay but from team point of view its very good. irfan should have been picked instead of vinay anyway. he really desreved it and will provide very good balance to the team. there was no any allrounder in the team. one question? IS THAT VINAY REALLY INJURED OR ITS PEOPLE'S REACTION WORKING.....

  • Percy_Fender on July 13, 2012, 12:49 GMT

This could well be the chance that could change Irfan's life as a cricketer. I have always been an admirer of Pathan even in his U 19 days. He made his debut quite impressively but things went wrong somehow. He lost pace quite dramatically and also his swing which had once made him s big success. He seems to have regained his swing to some extent and also a bit of his pace as well. I feel that as he gets older he should bowl round the wicket and swing the ball both ways pitching off stump. If he builds his accuracy he could be the all rounder we have been waiting for. He is a good batsman and fielder and has the right temperament. He needs to also evolve in cutting the ball.If Philander,Kulasekhara,Pereira,Junaid and Mathews can succeed at a pace of around 130 kph, I see no reason why Irfan cannot do likewise. He has everything a medium pace all rounder needs in terms of cricketing skills.Zaheer should help hi with a bowling strategy that could make Irfan the match winner he is

  • on July 13, 2012, 12:48 GMT

It's difficult to understand, how does a player like Vinay Kumar get selected for team India!! His bowling ability is ordinary and he hasn't displayed anything significant to warrant a consistent place in the Indian side. There should be more deserving players out there, unless team India is short on medium pacers! Good luck on India and also Irfan.

  • i_witnessed_2011 on July 13, 2012, 12:39 GMT

Nice opportunity for Irfan to cement his place. I hope he will be given fair chance to show his all round capabilities.

  • ashutoshsc on July 13, 2012, 12:37 GMT

what a great news for indian fans!!!!!!!!!! irfan, certainly deserved a chance.. it was unfair to drop him.. and an injury to vinay kumar made the job easy for the selectors..

  • PadamHCL on July 13, 2012, 12:31 GMT

Great decision, totally surprised whe he got dropped for the Srilanka tour. There was no pure allrounder available earlier in the team, now our team will look more stable and more dynamic. All the best Irfan, we are expecting lot from you, keep perform well and cement your place in Indain team.

  • huzrocks on July 13, 2012, 12:29 GMT

  • on July 13, 2012, 12:26 GMT

This should've been done before. we shd give more chance to irfan as an allrounder. look at westindies, they r giving their allroundes ample opportunity and even promoting them as a captain. yeah i'm talking about the average sammy only.

  • on July 13, 2012, 12:25 GMT

    Good news....pathan is back.

  • on July 13, 2012, 12:24 GMT

Wow...... India will definitely win the series now...not because Irfan joined the team.its because Vinay is not in the Squad.... anyways Irfans is always better than Vinay Kumar tough

  • on July 13, 2012, 12:23 GMT

Oh yes!!!! finally the thunder bolt striker Vinay Kumar is out of the Indian Team so selectors will have to work with only the ultra slow Yadav!!!! Although I feel sorry for his injury and wish him a speedy recovery but still I believe there are others who deserve to be ahead of him while picking up the squad

  • satish619chandar on July 13, 2012, 12:21 GMT

So, fan's wish granted.. Irfan need to be back as a Old Irfan we know.. Wickets with new ball and yorkers at end.. I am not a fan of the current slow ball Irfan.. On current form in terms of bowling, Vinay is better than Irfan.. Batting is Irfan's added advantage.. Anyways, good luck Irfan to cement your place in the team..

  • on July 13, 2012, 12:21 GMT

  • TheSachinGod on July 13, 2012, 12:18 GMT

All the best Irfan Pathan. You don't get too many opportunities, especially when you're in Team India so please take advantage of this opportunity. You can be one of the greatest fast bowler, if you give your 100 percent.

  • Naresh28 on July 13, 2012, 12:02 GMT

There's lots Irfan fans out there. This is an opportunity for him to grab the chance with both hands. He is a good fielder and a decent batsman. His bowling seems good initially and then fades. I hope he finds that good curler/banana he used to bowl in the old days.

  • praveen4honestremark on July 13, 2012, 12:00 GMT

Irfan Pathan all the best. You should prove yourself now. All rounder in need for India now so the best chance for you now. Chip in with 2 -3 wickets and 30 odd runs can do you great favor for cementing your place. You should be more of a bowling all rounder. Batting with so much depth, it may not reach till you. God bless you with some fortune and expecting a same Irfan with good fitness.

  • Hussain59133 on July 13, 2012, 12:00 GMT

i am so glad to know that vinay kumar is sidelined from sri lanka tour because irfan is 1000 times better than vinay he can perform in all aspects of game (batting, bowling & fielding) & i hope that irfan will continue to play for T20 world cup which is going to be start in september

That's the news i want to listen. I think irfan deserves a place in playing eleven because he can add more value to the team through his batting and perfect for no. 7. he can bat up the order and also bowls his full quota of 10. HE IS RIGHT CHOICE FOR ODIS AND T20S. AS WE NEED A ALLROUNDER IN TEAM INDIA FOR THE UPCOMING WORLD T20, SO HE IS GOOD PROSPECT FOR THAT !
